Systems for Intermittent Fasting, Ketogenic Diets & Metabolic Disease Prevention w/Dr. Brett Osborn

How do you limit simple carb consumption, fight metabolic disease and slow (or even reverse) the aging process? Dr. Brett Osborn, neurosurgeon and author of Get Serious, shares some simple rules for intermittent fasting, why insulin sensitivity is the key to fat loss, how different body types can adapt their diets to benefit from ketosis, and why YOU are ultimately in control of you body, regardless of genetics. Three Takeaways Don’t eat between 7pm and 7am - nighttime eating is death. Use ketones and zero-carb protein to suppress hunger during intermittent fasting without triggering an insulin response The genesis of all our common killer diseases are overconsumption of simple carbs Article- First we cover how fat loss is determined by your insulin sensitivity and why most of us are becoming insulin-resistant. Dr. Osborn calls it the Boy Who Cried Wolf Syndrome. “If you show your cells lots and lots of simple carbohydrates, your body will become less and less sensitive to the insulin secreted by the pancreas in response to the sugar load...Glucose that is consumed in your diets will literally wreak havoc in your cardiovascular system...So you want to make sure your cells are really, really sensitive to the effects of insulin by not showing them high levels of insulin.” We also covered the role of muscle mass and body types in relation to insulin and body fat. “Equally important to our insulin-sensitivity is getting a good amount of muscle mass on your body,” Dr. Osborn explained, “that’s how you control your blood glucose...that’s going to improve your insulin-sensitivity.” When it comes to body types, it’s not an even playing field, but you’re not genetically doomed to a certain body type. “You have to be aware of it,” Dr. Osborn pointed out, “but you can move your body any way with an awareness of your carbohydrate sensitivity or your insulin-sensitivity, etc, just by switching your carbohydrates one way or another.” Then we moved on to ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting, and Dr. Osborn shared his perspective on ketogenic supplements, which he believes overstates their effectiveness. However, he puts his brain tumor patients on ketogenic diets because cancer cells love sugar, and low-carb diets deprive cancer cells of the substrate needed for cancer-cell growth. He also puts patients on Kegenix as a supplement for its “anti-cancer properties” and to help the body use something other than simple carbs as fuel. Dr. Osborn emphasized, “The genesis of all these diseases - cancer, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease - they are metabolic diseases due to overconsumption of simple carbohydrates. So if you can use something else as an energy source...use it.” Regarding ketosis, Dr. Osborn advises his patients to follow a simple rule, No eating after 7pm. That gives them a simple, easy to follow protocol that results in 12-hr bursts of intermittent fasting (7pm-7am) where they are starting to aggressively burn fat toward the end of that period. “The beautiful thing about being in ketosis...ketones, at the level of the brain, suppress your appetite.” Dr. Osborn recommends that if you’re struggling with intermittent fasting, take some ketones and zero-carb protein to hold you over. But what about building muscle on a ketogenic diet? “There’s only one sport that you need to have glucose in your body in order to perform well...Bodybuilding.” Dr Osborn explained, “That will never work on a ketogenic diet, but you know what? So what. It’s not about bodybuilding, it’s about health.” Bottom line - Some form of carb-cycling or intermittent fasting is the absolute be-all end-all of modulating body weight, losing body weight and at the same time maintaining performance. We finished by covering how Dr. Osborn’s practice is evolving, the potential of a follow up to his book Get Serious, and how he’s moving toward the goal of multiple locations and expanding his reach nationwide. Ultimately, you are not destined to be obese or sick because of your genetics. You - the individual - are in control of your body. Experiment with intermittent fasting and limit simple carbs to improve your body’s insulin-sensitivity and fight metabolic disease. When it comes creating the most normal hormonal landscape inside the body, what protocols, substances and dosages make the most impact and ensure that the body benefits? This week, we discuss this with TRT expert, author and founder of All Things Men Dr. John Crisler and discuss optimal treatment protocols and estrogen control. Three Takeaways Entropy is part of youth, the more variability you have in your hormones, the younger you are. We’re all biochemically unique, there is no one size fits all approach for any of us. The goal of TRT is for a man to be on it and not have his body notice it. The aim is to recreate a normal hormonal landscape deep inside the body. At the start of the episode, Dr. John told us about his background and how he became involved in medicine with the aim of building a practice that would take care of body builders. Next, we discussed how doctors are managing endocrine systems and what it was like in the early days of the practice. We also talked about estrogen management and the reasons for the high estrogen problem a lot of young men are facing. John says, “all males are being assaulted constantly by estrogen substances whether it’s soy products, pesticides, BPAs etc.” We discussed optimal treatment protocols and how Dr. John starts with the medical history, “80% of your diagnosis is going to be made on your medical history.” We also discussed how to stimulate the system for patients under 40. We also talked about Clomifene, DHEA, HCG and aromatase inhibitors. We also discussed the choice between transdermals and shots when it comes to TRT. For a young male, gels mimic normal hormonal levels more closely that shots. They are variable through the day and stable across the week, whereas a shot is variable across the week and stable through the day. Towards the end of the show, we also discussed subcutaneous injections. HRT for males under 40 requires system stimulation. Whatever protocols you employ should take into account the fact that hormones in younger men are more variable. The best protocol is a combination of HCG, a testosterone and some estrogen control along with DHEA. On this episode, Daniel Kelly and I dispel some of the biggest myths about intermittent fasting, and share how the Metabolic Blowtorch Diet teaches a more effective fasting method.   "If you can fast for 30 hours, 3-4 days a week over a 2-4 week period, you will drastically change your body composition, and you won’t lose muscle." -Jay Campbell   Takeaways from this Episode - Eat on your training days. High iron levels can negate your good diet and exercise habits while raising your risk of age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease. In our latest episode Dennis Mangan shares the best methods for testing for high iron and reducing iron to healthy levels in your system, plus touches on the benefits of intermittent fasting and his perspective on SARM’s. Three Takeaways You may have your diet and exercises and sleep dialed in, but an over-accumulation of iron may negate those good habits Know your ferritin levels and aim for lower than the “normal” range in lab tests The #1 most effective way to get rid of iron is blood donation Article- Dennis started with the basics of iron as a reactive element. Iron reacts with different constituents in our body, so the more iron in our body the more damage it causes. The #1 storage mechanism for iron in our bodies is our blood. Interestingly, Dennis points out than 10% of people in the US are truly iron-deficient, and those are mostly pre-menopausal women. The basic problem is this: Our bodies are evolutionarily conditioned to retain iron, so we have exquisite internal mechanisms for grabbing onto iron and no controlled means for getting rid of it. Over the years our bodies gradually accumulate iron and continue accumulating it beyond a healthy point. In fact, Dennis explained, “The average 35-yr old man has about 4-5x the amount of iron in his body as a woman the same age.” Our internal systems for mitigating the damage of iron aren’t perfect, resulting in age-related diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, all of which afflict men at much higher rates. So you may have your diet and exercises and sleep dialed in, but an over-accumulation of iron may negate those good habits. Then Dennis went into detail on how to get your iron to healthy levels; “Know your ferritin levels – this test is the most common measure of the level of stored iron in your body...The #1 most effective way to get rid of iron is blood donation. The average man who donates blood once a year cuts his ferritin levels in half.” If you’re not qualified to donate blood you have other options for lowering iron levels, from exercise to supplements and diet habits that inhibit iron uptake. There are no iron-reducing pharmaceutical products, which explains why there’s no incentive to raise public awareness of the issue. We hear much more about cholesterol as the cause of age-related issues like heart disease, because there are so many cholesterol-reducing drugs being pushed on the public. We finish up by touching on the benefits of intermittent fasting and keto powders.
