Garage storage ideas

Clutter in our garage was out of control. We’ll show you the storage systems and organization ideas that helped us turn it into a functional workshop. But can we also fit both our cars? 👇 links to what we used below! 👇 ……………………………………………………………… GET STRAIGHT TO THE ACTION 0:42 ……………………………………………………………… SUPPORT US ON PATREON (if you want) https://www.patreon.com/evanandkatelyn ……………………………………………………………… FULL TUTORIAL http://evanandkatelyn.com/2017/03/garage-storage-ideas/ ……………………………………………………………… TOOLS / MATERIALS Pegboard panels……………. http://amzn.to/2lDlCSC Stud finder…………….…..… http://amzn.to/2mP1YE3 Level…………………………. http://amzn.to/2mOYvoV Screws Power screwdriver…………. http://amzn.to/2mOZiWV 1x4's Shelf track rails…………….. https://tinyurl.com/kygr86y Shelf brackets……………… https://tinyurl.com/m2g9meq 1x12's Track system………………. http://amzn.to/2mOQQXQ Hooks to go with it……...…. http://amzn.to/2m4hyfc 1/2" plywood Some extra scrap wood ……………………………………………………………… FILMING GEAR Fujifilm X-T10........................http://amzn.to/2pblgac Panasonic DMC-FZ300........http://amzn.to/2ojCx1O Microphone..........................http://amzn.to/2psb4s2 Joby GorillaPod tripod.........http://amzn.to/2qqdXZR Ballhead for tripod...............http://amzn.to/2psfeQI ……………………………………………………………… STAY UP TO DATE Instagram….. http://instagram.com/evanandkatelyn @evanandkatelyn Subscribe….. https://goo.gl/gB91hW Blog………... http://evanandkatelyn.com Facebook….. http://facebook.com/evanandkatelyn Pinterest...... https://www.pinterest.com/evanandkatelyn/ ……………………………………………………………… ETSY SHOP http://etsy.com/shop/evanandkatelyn ……………………………………………………………… MUSIC By The Croft by Joakim Karud https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud Music provided by Audio Library https://youtu.be/tnV_PH26SVU Our thoughts on these garage storage systems: Overall, we are so pleased with all of the storage systems we implemented in our workshop. Workshop organization ideas are easy to find, but these are the solutions that worked for us. Having everything either up on the walls using vertical storage or on rolling casters was a big goal of ours, because square footage is so limited. The shelf and rail systems are great and adjustable, we love the metal pegboards, and the track system for longer items works great too!

DIY coat rack organizer shelf... thing | Woodworking how to

👇 materials & links below! 👇 What do you call something that is a coat rack, magnetic key ring holder, entryway organizer, mail storage, floating shelf… thing? We don’t know either. But we made it and so can you! NOTE: if you want to hang anything heavy on this you should mount it with something heavier duty like french cleats or keyhole hangers. You could also route keyholes right into the wood with a slotted router bit. We love that so many different types of storage are built into this piece - hooks, shelves, and key magnets. We also like that we were able to make it with a pretty limited amount of tools and inexpensive lumber. Something like this could also be used as a display shelf in a kids room (trophies on top, coats and backpack on bottom). I think it would be interesting to add lips on the left and right side of the mail holder as well to turn that spot into a catch all. Also, we love the hooks we bought for this! They were SO much cheaper than most traditional coat hooks we found, they're simple and modern, and they're big enough to double up with coats.

How to patch and repair drywall

Little holes are particularly easy with spackle, but even using mesh patches, patching compound, and chunks of drywall weren't too hard! And it really does make a huge different in the appearance of your walls. Topped with a fresh coat of paint, it makes a huge difference for a beginner/easy project.

Making a terrible cat toy with William Osman

Luckily, a shelter nearby let us in even though it wasn't open hours and we got to play with the cats. The whack-a-mole features of this toy did actually work ok! The cats seemed to like it well enough, though we realized it was individual toys getting their attention and not the mechanics of the toy itself haha. They quickly got bored of us, but it was really fun.

DIY Rolling Pantry | How to

We were so worried because we were building it offsite and couldn't double check measurements as we went. But this rolling pantry turned out to be a perfect fit, both for the space between Lisa's fridge and countertop and for Lisa as a person (see what I did there?). We did different height shelves to accommodate different types of food (tall ones for cereal boxes, medium ones for olive oil and vinegar, small ones for spices and cans). It added so much storage to her kitchen and is a great kitchen organizer too. Plus... it rolls! And in our opinion, rolling storage is the best storage. We hope Lisa enjoys her DIY rolling pantry!

We've started using these magnetic quick connects for ourselves already and they are so convenient to have on our keychains! And we love that they are walnut, though it would be interesting to try using different woods (could even be cool to mix and match them). If you're wanting to tackle these DIY quick connects, you could follow this tutorial but we think there are several variations you could do if you want to tweak the design. Excited to see what y'all make!

Everyone who has tried these methods has a different take on them of course, and it depends on what types of projects you are making and selling, but hopefully our personal experiences will help others who are interested in selling handmade products. We think one cool thing about selling handmade is you can do it as a full business or as a side hustle, so it's easy to dip your toes into it. We started out doing pop up shops and starting an Etsy page, and these led us to joining the West Elm local program where we started selling wholesale. We'd love to hear others' tips and tricks as well, since we are still learning lots the more we do this. Do you guys prefer small craft fairs, bigger trade shows, selling online on Etsy or your own store, selling wholesale, etc?

Making the boxes on the CNC made that level of precision possible, but if you have more woodworking skills than us you could probably do it using non- digital fabrication means. I think one of the key elements of this box is the hidden barrel hinges. They’re so small and not visible from the outside - though we actually like that with the clear acrylic version of the box we can see them! It was fun being able to have a jig and our clamping system that allowed us to run multiple boxes so we could try different combinations of wood, acrylic, etc.

MUSIC Great Days by Joakim Karud http://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud Music provided by Audio Library https://youtu.be/5lhZRunuJTs More thoughts on the project; all in all, despite the challenges we faced (or maybe because of the challenges!) we learned a ton on this project. First and foremost, due to lots of comments, we learned that succulents are probably not the best plants to put in our self watering planter (we actually had one die, but one lived and did so well it outgrew it!) We love the look of a concrete planter, and we were able to get some really interesting curves because of the 3D printed mold we made, though you could definitely accomplish the same functionality just doing a mold out of wood or MDF if you don't have a 3D printer, which is a more DIY friendly option. Overall, we love that this planter is self watering, we love the modern design, we love concrete as a material, and we love what we learned along the way.

It does seem ironic that the cheaper your material gets, the more tools (which can cost a lot) you seem to need to get it into shape. But we did learn other valuable lessons experimenting with this 2x4 side table other than just how to do angled dados! We also dealt with snipe from our planer for the first time, and I'm so glad we learned on cheap wood rather than something expensive. In addition, this was our first furniture piece held together only by glue (no screws!). Lastly, it was our first time doing the finishing combination recommended by David Picciuto of coats of shellac followed by a buffing of wax. It was really easy, really forgiving, and we love how the finish turned out.

Wow, these little letters really are easy! We actually ended up making lots of them and sell them at pop up shops and on our etsy. Having the baking molds you can just buy for the letters is what makes this project really accessible for beginners / DIYers. Also, the concrete is really fun to work with! It's a cheap concrete so it's ok to experiment a little without pressure, but we've found it's easy to use. We also love that you could finish these concrete letters so many different ways! We used gold spray paint, but if you don't like the spray painted look you could do a paint dipped look, paint just the sides , or just leave them as is. ……………………………………………………………… NOTE: Make sure you have your PPE (personal protective equipment on) before you start handling the concrete mix. Portland cement is very basic (opposite of acidic), and has crystalline silica dust (which is really bad for your lungs). If you get cement on your hands and leave it there it can cause minor chemical burns and draws out moisture from your skin. If you do get cement on your hands, no worries. Wash with water, then pour common white vinegar over the area to neutralize any alkalinity, then wash with water again. ……………………………………………………………… MUSIC That Day by Joakim Karud https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud Creative Commons - Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported— CC BY-SA 3.0 Music provided by Audio Library https://youtu.be/YDT00lBAG2g

Not that they were any more difficult of a project the first time, it's just before we were working on a tiny apartment balcony and we didn't have a nail gun. But even if you don't have a nail gun, this is still a really DIY-friendly project. Depending on the drill and jig saw you buy, it's still cheaper to buy the tools and materials needed than to buy or rent marquee letters this big. Plus the metal siding and wood combination makes them look awesome and they're really sturdy. And the globe lights give such a nice glow. We absolutely loved how these marquee letters looked at our wedding, and they're still one of our favorite things we've ever made.

Also because it was so easy and quick, this cutting board would be great to make as gifts for friends and family. We used maple in this video, but we've also made it with walnut which looks amazing too. Any close grained, food safe hard wood should work. The angled cut, hole, and rounded edges give this one a simple modern look without being too plain, ad we really like how it turned out.

We both paint so our walls are filled with art. Not a bad problem to have, but it didn’t leave much space for photos. Clamping the angle for this was definitely the most difficult part, though it was by no means impossible. We ended up coming up with a clamp technique that can really clamp any angle, so we'll use the technique in the future too. Also, we were so impressed by how the grain of the cherry lined up on the backing of our photo stand. We're glad we made a photo stand instead of a photo frame because more of the wood gets to show through. The metal stand offs and the acrylic give it a modern vibe which we also like. This DIY photo stand was really fun to make and we already have family requesting that we make one for them too!

DIY Modern Cat Scratching Post | How to

This couldn't make us more happy. She uses this vertical scratching post way more than she used the horizontal one we made a while back, and it's not a tripping hazard haha. It fits in nicely with our other modern decor, though I will say we don't use it to set drinks on very often - but that's probably because we always sit on the other end of the couch. One day I'm sure the sisal will wear out, but when that time comes it shouldn't be hard to undo our screws and replace it. Yay for a cat scratching post that actually works!!!

How to make outdoor hanging Ghosts | Easy & quick

When we first bought our house we needed some easy outdoor Halloween decoration last minute so we made these DIY ghosts. They've been stress tested for 4 years so we thought they deserved their own proper tutorial! 👇 materials & links below! 👇 Skip the intro: 0:40 TOOLS/MATERIALS ■ Fabric - we got ours locally ■ Metal hanger - from our closet ■ Plastic bags - left over from grocery shopping ■ Black tape - http://amzn.to/2zPqvPX ■ Fishing line - http://amzn.to/2zRzzUo ■ Pliers - http://amzn.to/2iA7lcD ■ Scissors - http://amzn.to/2gKogZs ■ Bolt cutter (for the hanger) - http://amzn.to/2i7HLHR STAY UP TO DATE ■ Instagram http://instagram.com/evanandkatelyn @evanandkatelyn ■ Twitter https://twitter.com/EvanAndKatelyn ■ Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/evanandkatelyn/ ■ Blog http://evanandkatelyn.com ■ Etsy http://etsy.com/shop/evanandkatelyn FILMING GEAR ■ Fujifilm X-T10 http://amzn.to/2pblgac (main camera) ■ 35 mm F 1.4 lens http://amzn.to/2whwP0N (makes things look fancy) ■ Panasonic DMC-FZ300 http://amzn.to/2ojCx1O (vlog and zoom camera) ■ Microphonehttp://amzn.to/2hy0eQS ■ Main tripod http://amzn.to/2whGqED ■ Pan head for tripod http://amzn.to/2fhX3wh ■ Joby GorillaPod tripod http://amzn.to/2qqdXZR ■ Ballhead for tripod http://amzn.to/2psfeQI ■ Gearbest gimble https://goo.gl/d8uVbL ■ Lighting kit http://amzn.to/2vs5sDB THANK YOU TOP PATREON SUPPORTERS! When we originally made them, we bought the fabric but didn't want to spend any additional money (because we had just bought a house and were feeling cheap!) so we used supplies we found around the house to make it work. You can really play around with the fabric, we like layering 2 different types to give the ghosts more depth so we went with a solid white and a gray sheer, but if you have fabric on hand or see something on sale, it'll probably work. These could be outdoor or indoor decor, we like hanging them from our trees because they aren't too scary for little kids but they also don't feel cheesy.

With Fusion 360, you can do the complex shapes, and we’ll walk you through how to do that today. We’ll start with an overview. Generally speaking, the steps to doing this are: 1) CAD, 2) CAM (comprised of details for your setup, tool, and tool path), 3) G-Code, 4) Machine Controller, 5) CNC. We’ll skip over CAD because that’s a whole tutorial on its own, and we’ll jump straight into CAM. CAM is basically showing the CNC how to carve your model out of your stock material. But Fusion 360 can’t read your mind, so you have to input all this information. Open your model in Fusion and click on the CAM tab. You’ll start by creating a new setup. This is where you’ll define 1) what the raw material is, 2) how your model is oriented, and 3) what you want to end up with.

But this deer head design is the thing that first got us making products, which lead to us starting a YouTube channel, which started us down this crazy path. So we'll give some more info on the process of making the deer head itself here. It's 3D printed in PLA filament, printed in 3 pieces, then glued together with the help of dowels. We clean up the print using a soldering iron to melt the plastic. This is mostly necessary in the spots where we broke off the print supports. Then we painted it witha metallic gun metal spray paint. For the wood backing, we salvaged some rustic pallet wood, added a bit of dimension to it with the same spray paint as before, and used acrylic paint to give it a street art vibe, layering multiple colors, brush strokes, and spatters. We finished it off by 3D printing "DO MORE" and attaching the letters under the deer head.

We love the modern handle, leather pull, and mix of materials. The “half lap dovetail” joint was a bit ambitious for a first CNC project on our Carvey, but we learned a ton! We think CNCs are a great way to do complicated joinery like this, and to help you do quick iterations. Side note - the Carvey was super easy to use pretty much immediately out of the box. Also, our mom’s loved how the cheese boards turned out! Would highly recommend this design as a mom-approved gift. You can download our files on Easel and run them yourself if you want to make this too.

Guess that’s what happens when it’s holiday season and a rush order comes in! We had to make 80 concrete coasters for West Elm and we learned a lot about making master models and silicone molds along the way. Hopefully this video is not just a concrete how to but also a mold making how to. The Precision Board Plus was an AWESOME material to work with. It’s a high density urethane foam but it feels like stone and has a smooth sandable, non-porous surface. It carved like a breeze on our X-Carve. However, we didn’t know until it was too late that the silicone type we got, Mold Star 15, was incompatible with urethane. Automotive primer to the rescue! We use this stuff to smooth out 3D prints all the time but it also made a great barrier between the urethane and the silicone! Once we got to actually mixing the concrete, that was the easy part! Here are some tips you can use for any DIY concrete project: start with less water than you think - a little goes a long way! Agitate your molds to remove concrete bubbles - you can shimmy and shake em or put a sander next to them to vibrate them. They can be removed before fully cured, but they need to cure before you paint them! Hope you can apply some of the tips in the video if you’re working on silicone molds, diy concrete projects, or have any concrete how to projects ahead of you!

We exported a vector as an SVG to import into Easel. We fired up our Inventables X-Carve to cut out a precise and repeatable shape (so they match and we can make another easily if we need to in the future) We cut them out with a jigsaw and an ordinary wood blade. It’s almost impossible to remove all the tabs completely cleanly though, so we cleaned up and rounded all the outer edges on our Rockler router table. It’s all decked out and every time we use it we really appreciate having it, especially compared to our old palm router. We finished up the shape by filing inner tabs and doing some hand sanding Once the shape was finalized it was time for some thermoforming (bending while hot)! We ran some tests before bending the final corian though. We embedded one thermocouple inside the corian and taped one to the outside. By the time they were at their final temperature (300 degrees F) the difference between the two was negligible. If you’re going to do this yourself and you don’t have access to a thermocouple, Dupont, the maker of Corian has this handy guide on what to heat your temperature up to for what time and thickness and it should get you to the right place: https://goo.gl/hKzzYJ We then made a form to shape the corian to. We held up some wooden salad servers we had as a guide and then matched their curve using some scrap wood and flashing. The first thermoforming went really well but we didn’t remove the thermocouple during the thermoforming and it actually indented the corian!! For the second thermoforming operation we removed the thermocouple and it was PERFECT! Remember: hold it in place till the temperature drops to 180 degrees F. We wanted to add little wooden dowels so the salad servers didn’t fall into our salad bowl. We drilled out a hole for the dowel, drilling in part way from each side we we didn’t chip the corian as it exited the hole. We rounded the edges of our walnut dowels on the belt sander, oiled them up, and hammered them into place! Lastly we did some final shaping to the salad servers on the belt sander and with some hand sanding to add a nice little taper.

We started with the leather. We were also using a laser in one of our projects for the first time and learned a lot about both. After a lot of experiments (read: trial and error) we settled on a crisscrossing design for the leather net. We cut and engraved it in 7 different setups on the Glowforge. We used tape to help w/ these setups and keep everything spaced evenly. Once we were done with the laser cutting it was time for another first! Hand stitching leather. Also super satisfying. Throughout the leatherworking we were working on our clamps. We had modeled the clamps before we went up to see Bob and thought that making them would be a cakewalk, especially when we found out that he had the MOARstruder (which honestly was amazing), but of course we ran into complications. After remodeling almost everything and a lot of fiddling it functioned great. We didn’t finish or paint anything because the black PLA with the super thick layer lines actually looked pretty nice. We also really liked the brass accents we used for the thumb nuts (and also the heat set threaded brass insert, even though you can’t see it much). At least that’s what we’re telling ourselves since we had to go through so many revisions to get this where we wanted it! The first version we made actually worked really well! It fired and held pressure but it was weird to pressure it up with the bike pump on top and release pressure at the bottom. We went through a whole bunch of iterations before giving into the inevitable and adding a hose running to the bottom of a water reservoir. We also thought it would be fun to make our own nozzle. The first one was just a straight hole drilled through a ⅛” NPT plug. We wanted to make the hole smaller so we hammered it with a punch. The hole certainly got smaller but it was also rough so it just ended up misting the water instead of producing a nice stream. This got us thinking of turbulent and laminar water flow so we designed a nozzle in 3D to address the problem. The nozzle has a grid of parallel tubes that lines the flow up and creates a much smoother flow. We 3D printed the nozzles on our SLA printer and were absolutely blown away with the results. They were functional right away, including the threads, which sealed and held up to 150 PSI!! Throughout the whole process the water blaster kept on getting bigger too! Mainly because firing the super soaker clone was SO much fun we didn’t like running out of water. We went from ½” to 1-½” to 2” reservoirs. Once we had the plumbing and functional parts in place we wanted to reinforce the whole structure. We addressed that by adding a 3D printed body to lock everything straight. It had the added bonus of making the assembly look more finished/cool and it also made resting against your shoulder more comfortable. We were super happy with how the water blaster turned out but of course we had to test it against the super soakers available today (which are only the single stroke displacement type). The super soaker Breach Blast was chosen because it had one of the best advertised ranges (38 ft). In reality it had a huge spread and fired mostly between 20 and 30 feet with some sprinkles hitting around 38. Our water gun had more concentrated bursts that mainly hit 28-33 feet. The main difference to us is that pressure powered water blasters like ours can be prepped and rapidly fired vs the single stroke style that required you to pump every time.

This is a great basic project to start with. Plus it's a functional 3D print, which we always prefer. Hose adapters never seem to be perfectly sized, so being able to print the connectors are really nice. We have a whole collection of 3D printed hose adapters now! We use them for our shop vac / dust collection, hooked up to our miter saw, table saw, etc. We used OnShape for this, but lately we've actually been liking Fusion 360 even better. That's a video for another time, but we'd love to do a basic 3D modeling tutorial using Fusion 360 in the future.

We love that it’s made from t-slot aluminum extrusions because we will inevitable grow our collection and this makes it a flexible / modular cart that we can add onto. In addition we do plan on turning this into an enclosure and adding additional organization for materials like filament and resin. It’s really sturdy and easily held the weight of two of us rolling around on it, which makes us feel good about it housing our machines. Plus it’s handy that we can roll it around if we need to move it. Using Vention was really handy because we could design our piece in their free CAD software and order exactly what we needed for our exact design. Of course, we ended up realizing a few extra brackets we needed as we went and 3D printed some custom ones that locked into the aluminum extrusions. We also added our own touch to the cart in the form of wood shelves. We split the two wider shelves into two parts to maintain the modularity (if we need to make one side taller, we don’t have to cut our shelf in half). Overall, we think this is going to be a great system for 3d printer storage and cnc storage!

Even though it's more of a faux botanical look, we really like the overall modern aesthetic and it's a flexible design that you can easily customize yourself. We think it's also a cool type of wall art to break up a gallery wall full of standard frames. Oooo and it would look great to do a grouping of these! You could do flowers in one, leaves or stems in another, etc. Overall, great DIY project, especially if you're a beginner because it's really pretty easy.

3D printed metal jewelry (+unboxing)

We prototyped 3D printed jewelry in copper filament, had it made in precious metals (gold, silver, brass, bronze, and rhodium) and we’re able to sell them for passive income (as makers, we’re always looking into ways to sell our products or designs!). This was originally going to be an unboxing video, but we thought the backstory might spark some ideas if you’re looking to sell your own products or interested in metal 3D prints 👇 materials & links below! 👇 Patreon and Aftershow https://www.patreon.com/evanandkatelyn How to sell handmade products video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHGXNY7TWKg&t=237s Our Shapeways store https://goo.gl/trdakE Instagram http://instagram.com/evanandkatelyn @evanandkatelyn You can help us make more videos by supporting us on Patreon, but no pressure! https://www.patreon.com/evanandkatelyn TOOLS / MATERIALS ■ Copperfill 1.75 mm - https://goo.gl/HBsnxL ■ Copperfill 3.00 mm - https://goo.gl/wj7atL ■ Lulzbot Mini https://goo.gl/kWgZRN ■ Tumbler http://amzn.to/2mh8PXj FILMING GEAR ■ Fujifilm X-T10 http://amzn.to/2pblgac (main camera) ■ 35 mm F 1.4 lens http://amzn.to/2whwP0N (makes things look fancy) ■ Panasonic DMC-FZ300 http://amzn.to/2ojCx1O (vlog and zoom camera) ■ Microphonehttp://amzn.to/2hy0eQS ■ Main tripod http://amzn.to/2whGqED ■ Pan head for tripod http://amzn.to/2fhX3wh ■ Joby GorillaPod tripod http://amzn.to/2qqdXZR ■ Ballhead for tripod http://amzn.to/2psfeQI ■ Gearbest gimble https://goo.gl/d8uVbL ■ Lighting kit http://amzn.to/2vs5sDB STAY UP TO DATE ■ Instagram http://instagram.com/evanandkatelyn @evanandkatelyn ■ Twitter https://twitter.com/EvanAndKatelyn ■ Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/evanandkatelyn/ ■ Blog http://evanandkatelyn.com ■ Etsy http://etsy.com/shop/evanandkatelyn MUSIC 10K by Joakim Karud THANK YOU TOP PATREON SUPPORTERS! ■ Katelyn’s Mom ■ Brandon’s Bees https://goo.gl/XP93pp ■ Bruce A. After so much time and thought going into our prototypes that we made in copper filament, it was SO satisfying seeing our designs made in fancy metals! Unboxing these was like Christmas morning. We got the ring made in gold, silver, brass, bronze, and rhodium, and the necklace made in gold and silver. We really love how these turned out, and we think the selling process is very intriguing. The design is often one of our favorite parts of making, so being able to put a little more time into that and not having to deal with things like shipping is super nice.

It helps us set up jigs which is great when we are making multiples of the same cut, but it also allows us to use less stock because it can clamp from the sides instead of the top. We used Rockler T-tracks and clamps and so far they've worked really well. The piece has been really secure for all cuts. We also love that it was such an easy upgrade to make. It was way less complicated than our earlier ideas of running t-slot in a grid pattern, and it's flexible enough to work for big and small pieces.

We used a stereolithography (SLA) 3d printer (the Peopoly Moai) to make a master model. SLA has the advantage over fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) because it has a smoother and more accurate surface finish. We sealed the SLA print because it can interfere with the silicone curing process by spraying some clear acrylic spray paint. We then applied mold release to prep for the silicone pour! We first tried platinum cure silicone but it was too finicky so we switched to tin cure silicone. We talked with Quikrete about what concrete mix to use and they recommended we use non-shrink precision grout. The main things we liked about this mix is that it was really fine (so it could capture tiny details), it hardened pretty fast, and its final strength is really impressive.

Being able to use the piece to trace out the angle is a technique that can be applied to any angle and it was really easy. Also, we didn't have to buy any special clamps. As DIY folks, we think this'll be a really versatile tool in our arsenal. And it will allow us to start experimenting with incorporating more angles into our designs, which we really like because we think it gives pieces a more modern feel. Specifically, we used this jig on our modern acrylic and wood photo frame / stand, but we're excited to use it even more in the future.

Homemade See-Through Blaster at 1000FPS!

14:50
Who hasn’t watched Mythbusters and wanted to make something blow up and then watch it in slow motion? We made this see though propane blaster to do just that. 👇 more info & disclaimer below 👇 Watch the aftershow here: https://www.patreon.com/evanandkatelyn This was quite an experiment for us both in terms of the build and by getting into “science” like content. Instead of building a typical potato/spud launcher we used propane as the fuel, which let us fire faster… once we figured out how to get it to fire... NOTE: We cannot recommend doing this. We have background and experience that allows us to take this on safely. A propane combustion should only produce 40-50 PSI at atmospheric pressure with normal atmospheric oxygen levels. To be safe we used Schedule 80 pipe with a minimum pressure rating of 140 PSI for all connections. If you make something like this despite our warning, PPE should be worn at all times (ear and eye protection). Instead of building a typical potato/spud blaster, we used propane as the fuel, which let us fire faster… once we figured out how to get it to fire. It was fun using different skills and techniques to bring this together. Particularly, 3D printing played a heavy role. We 3D printed lots of the fasteners we used (for the propane and the strap) and the projectiles themselves! Being able to quickly test different projectiles was super important for our testing. We got a slow motion camera specifically for this project and I'm so glad we did! It was incredibly satisfying blowing up watermelon and getting those shots! We also might our hand at making other types of blasters in the future - maybe an air-powered one!

When we first started making products, we did them all with a 3D printer, but having a Carvey opens up new possibilities (new materials! Wood and corian!). We think when used for small business purposes, machines like this can pay for themselves over time which is really cool. This video isn't a comprehensive review, but already we are really liking this CNC. Especially because it's a desktop CNC... which is awesome since we are running out of space in the shop, and have to often bring machines inside. We also love that it comes pretty much ready to run. Set up is easy and and intuitive. So far - lots of thumbs ups! This technique would work great for photo galleries too. We like to do arrangements that are either aligned on the top, bottom, or middle, but even if you like more organic arrangements you can still use some of the tips and tricks here to plan your gallery. We like laying everything out on the ground in a space the same size of the wall, that way you can see how all the art pieces or photos go together. Then we create a cheat sheet for ourselves with all the measurements - measuring specifically where we need to nail holes in the wall. You take into account where the hanging hooks are in relation to the edge of the frame and how much space you want between the frames.

We knew we wanted to power carve a bench and originally thought we would sculpt it into an interesting shape. However, after testing the TURBO Plane on some scrap wood and seeing the texture it left, we knew we wanted a textured wood look. With the different colored grain of the pecan wood under the power carved texture, it kinda looked like rain causing ripples in water, hence the name Ripple Bench. We feel weird about naming our bench…haha. We were pretty new to power carving before this project and it was surprisingly easy to learn. The biggest takeaways: cut so that the blade carves with the grain, not against it, and have a light hand rather than a heavy hand. Also, practice! It’s very easy to maneuver once you practice a little bit and figure out what result you want. This bench is the biggest project we’ve built so far, and that’s really exciting! Now we want to do more larger furniture pieces. We just love how it turned out - it’s modern and organic at the same time. And we can’t help but touch it every time we walk by haha.

It was really interesting learning how to use Worbla and Thermoflex and form them with a heat gun. We were able to get really fine detail and a nice texture. We definitely did some experimenting when it came to painting the Worbla to look metallic. There are lots of different Worbla painting techniques, but we found dry brushing and layering on grime and shadows worked really well. We want to eventually do the rest of the Wonder Woman costume but we aren't sure where to start next - chest plate, gauntlets, etc? We are super excited! Maybe we will incorporate some EVA foam into the rest of the costume along with the Worbla.

We thought it was only fitting that we made the blocks with our robots: we used our Inventables X-Carve CNC and our Taz6 3D printer. The 3D printed parts were little adapters that the robot arm could grip onto. Using the CNC to make the blocks was great because we could even have it add the little dividing lines to make them look like pixels, and it was pretty precise so they fit together great. Doing the live stream with Simone was super fun, though it went by too fast!

Concrete ring cones & jewelry holders | How to

It saved a little money, made the gifts more special (hopefully lol), and we learned a few things in the process (mainly that concrete sands decently well, even though it’s not fun). We went back and forth on what to make the ring holder mold from. It had to be sturdy enough to hold a shape, waterproof so it does not fall apart when wet, but also flexible enough that it makes a nice cone instead of a teardrop. We ended up using some leftover transparencies which worked well but something even more flexible would have been nice. If we ever make these in larger quantities we’ll definitely be making a mold though. The concrete jewelry bowls were super easy and super difficult at the same time! Definitely room for improvement here too. The outer bowl popped off easy and we would not change anything there, but the inside shape needs improvement. The easiest solution would be to use something softer on the inside that can be compressed and then popped out. Not sure what it would be though (maybe a rubber ball cut in half?) In the end we’re really happy with how they turned out and hopefully our family likes them too! This allowed us to get more detailed striations / layers. This was our first CNC project and it may have been an ambitious one since it involved Fusion360 and CAD to CAM processes, but since we had an autodesk expert with us we were able to tackle it. This may not be a how to use a CNC guide, but we're hoping it's a nice bite sized introduction into some of the really cool stuff you can do with one. We do have a link above to a more detailed CAD to CAM tutorial and we go into the topographical state 3D model too, so hopefully if you're wanting to dive a little deeper that will help. We are excited to experiment with different woods and use the CNC to overall up our woodworking game, maybe even make furniture!

How To 3D Print with LASERS! (SLA)

We tried SLA printing for the first time using our Moai! They can get really fine detail because the layer lines are pretty much undetectable, so they don’t require the priming and sanding of FFF prints. We also go over how to build a UV box, which makes curing these prints a breeze. It’s essentially just a cardboard box, lined with foil (that’s attached with spray adhesive), with a hole cut out of the top that you attach a UV light to. As a bonus, we got a tiny solar powered turntable to rotate the piece. You could theoretically just leave them in the sun too, but the UV box seemed like a quicker way to cure them. We also tested two methods of cleaning them before curing. Resin SLA prints have a layer of liquid resin on them when they come out of the Moai (or whatever 3D printer you’re using) covered in a thin layer of resin, and you want to clean that off before curing them otherwise you will cure on the extra resin as well. The cheapest method is to just get two mason jars, one with alcohol, one with water, and shake the print first in the alcohol, then the water, then alcohol, then water. The other method we tried was using the ultrasonic cleaner. So instead of shaking the alcohol jar, we put it in the cleaner instead. Both methods seems to work to clean off the resin, but Evan’s theory is that the ultrasonic cleaner would make a bigger difference with a more detailed print. One note - our mason jars were too skinny for our full-sized print so we had to use tupperware and it was very splashy because our seal was not great. Make sure you have a good seal!

Which is why we did our best to break it down into clear steps. Acrylic paint is a really forgiving medium (if you mess it up, just layer on more!) and doing a soft blended background is a great place to start with art because it's hard to mess it up. The copper tape adds a mixed media interest and gives the pieces structure and modern vibes. Hope y'all liked this how to art tutorial!

We like to walk you through the ups, downs, and problem solving parts of making this knife handle because that’s where the “meat” really is - once all the testing is done, you just order it and the metal print arrives and you hope it works! This was our first time working on a knife project and it was so fun. The knife kit was easy to put together and we now have so many ideas of different designs for the knife scales we could do. We love that with 3D printing, we were able to print something that would be really difficult to manufacture in any other way.

The thing we love most is that it's so easy to swap out the sand paper, which makes this a really simple fix that doesn't end up taking any time to set up at all. It's specifically awesome for sanding convex areas, hard to reach spots, the inside of circular objects, or irregular surfaces. It was our first time doing wood art and it was really cool using veneer in a way other than what it was originally intended for. This was also our first time building a frame, and it was a big one! We used 1x2s for the outer frame, and used a bunch of 1x material we had on hand to reinforce it from the back.
