How to Use Important Adjectives (-ed & -ing)

24:41
Confusing -ed & -ing adjectives is a common grammar mistake that English learners make. The difference between "bored" & "boring" may only be a few letters, but if you confuse these adjectives, you may confuse the people you're speaking to. "I'm bored." is NOT the same as "I'm boring." So let's talk about the differences between -ed & -ing adjectives. We'll show you when and how to use them. Once you have a good understanding of these adjectives, we'll test your knowledge with some practice questions. LINKS TO PRACTICE & IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH Improve Your Listening w/ Audiobooks. Learn English Vocabulary - Weather and natural disasters

10:10
http://www.engvid.com Worried about natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis? When we make small talk in English, we often talk about the weather and recent natural events on our planet. In this lesson, I'll teach you English vocabulary to talk about weather, climate, and natural disasters. Watch this lesson, and you'll learn how to follow climate news, how to discuss weather trends, and much more. Take the quiz to test your understanding! When you're done, practice by posting a comment about a natural disaster in your country. http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-weather-climate-natural-disasters/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson comes from a few requests from the www.engvid.com comments section. Some people wanted to know about natural disasters. So what I have here is a bit of a combination of climate vocabulary and natural events. I don't call them "disasters" because, realistically, they're only disasters to humans; to nature, they are just events. Okay? Before we begin, I want to make sure we understand the difference between "climate" and "weather". "Weather" is the occurrence of nature every day. Today is sunny, tomorrow is raining, today is a little bit chilly, tomorrow is going to be nice and warm. Every day's situation is the weather. "Climate" is the pattern over usually we talk about a year. So if a country or a place has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter - each season has its own climate; rainy, hot, humid, whatever the case may be. So we're going to look at climate and natural events that usually go together. Now, this last year or the past 2 or 3 years have seen some very crazy weather-or sorry-climate events. So I'm going to give you some words to be able to discuss these amongst yourselves. First, we're going to start with: "flood" and "drought". Okay? The "h", the "gh" not pronounced. "Drought", "flood", like going up. So "flood" is when there's too much water. Very heavy rain, sometimes it's because snow melts too quickly in hills or mountains. All the water comes into a low place or a flat place, the earth doesn't absorb it quickly enough or the sewage can't take all of it, the pipes, etcetera so all the water rises up above the ground, goes into your houses, into the subway stations, everywhere. That's a flood, a flood. "Drought" is the complete opposite. A "drought" is what happens when a region or a place doesn't get water, doesn't get any rain for a very long period of time. Everything dries out, all the crops, all the wheat, and rice, and everything dies. Sometimes this leads to a famine. Okay? A "famine" is when there's a lot of people starving. Okay? So this is a natural disaster because human beings and animals are starving because everything died in the drought, there's nothing to eat. Okay, next we have: "earthquake". "Quake" basically means shake. An "earthquake" is when the earth shakes. Okay? Now, what often happens is when there's an earthquake in the sea or near the sea, there's often a "tsunami". Now, this is actually a Japanese word. Actually, it's two Japanese words, but they are used so commonly that we just take them as an English word now. "Tsunami" means harbour wave. Not so important for you guys right now, but it's basically a big wave or a big series of waves that after the earthquake, all the water in the seas or the oceans starts moving around, sometimes it moves on to the land and just destroys everything. I think everybody probably remembers the tsunami from 2006 or so in Indonesia, in that area, very destructive, in Japan a couple of years ago - huge tsunamis. Next, this is what we're experiencing lately with climate change, global warming, whatever you want to call it: "heat waves" and "cold fronts". Now, if you watch the news, the weather channel, for example, sometimes you'll see something like this, you'll see lines with semicircles moving. Other times, you'll see red lines with triangles moving. The blue lines, these are cold fronts, means a very cold mass of air, the cold amount of air is moving. The red one, same thing but heat, a lot of heat. Heat waves are very dangerous because they come very suddenly, it gets very, very hot. A lot of people suffer from it, a lot of people die from it. Same with a cold front, suddenly the temperature really, really drops, minus 20, minus 30, minus 40. And again, very, very dangerous; you don't want to be outside when that happens.
English Grammar: The Prepositions ON, AT, IN, BY

12:31
English for Beginners: Prepositions are short words that help us express location, time, and other relationships between people and things. Some examples of prepositions are: on, at, in, and by. Do you know how to use them? For example, do we say, "I am on a taxi" or "in a taxi"? Do you like to travel "in a plane" or "by plane"? After watching this simple but useful lesson, you will know exactly which preposition to use in any situation. Test yourself with our quiz: http://www.engvid.com/english-grammar-the-prepositions-on-at-in-by/ TRANSCRIPT I'm having a hard time reading on the train right now. Unh. Hold on. I'll start the lesson. Hi. James from engVid. Sorry, I was on the train. I want to teach you a lesson about four basic prepositions that we use in English that sometimes get confused, and I understand why, so I'll keep it basic. But because it's basic, it's going to be 80% correct. That's a good thing, that means you can go to the website and learn more from other lessons we have. But just know that sometimes there'll be exceptions, and I may not cover it here today. I'll even give you two exceptions to help you, but why waste time? Let's go to the board. Here's Mr. E. You'll notice he has a calendar, he has a clock, and: "You are here"? Oh, here. "Here" is a location. We're here right now, doing a lesson. That's the location: engVid. Let's go to the board and do the rest of the lesson, shall we? Here's: "at", "on", "in", and "by". "At". I love it because it's very specific, so you always know where you are, exactly. Problem: For transportation, "at" doesn't have anything. Hmm. So let's go to the next one. Let's go to "on". On. "On" is used for, let's say, large vehicles or large ways of travelling, such as buses... Sorry. Trains, buses, planes, and boats. I'll come back to boat in a second; it's an exception. On the train, on the bus, and on the plane, unless you're Bill Gates, Donald Trump, or me-I'm not in that list-you don't have your own train, plane, or bus, so you usually share it with a bunch of people or a few people. It's large. So we say: "You're on the bus", because it covers a big area, so there are many people sitting in that area. When I get to location, you'll see what I mean. Boat is a small exception. For many people in the world, they have their own boats because maybe they do fishing, or rowing, which is a type of boat that you go by yourself. In that situation, you can use "in". So, if the boat is small enough, say: "in": "I'm in a boat right now." But if it's a big boat, you have to say: "I'm on a boat." Another exception for the "on" rule is bicycle. You're always "on" a bicycle. I know, I said big vehicles, but remember: a bicycle is small, and it doesn't really have a motor or an engine, so we kind of give it its own thing, because you have to sit on the bicycle, and you can never really be in a bicycle. Is that good? Now, let's go to "in". "In" is funny because there are only two things for "in". "In" we use for car and taxi. The easy way to think about it is usually you own your own car; it doesn't belong to a group of people. People just don't get on your car every time you stop it, they go in and say: "Take me somewhere." And a taxi, well, when you're in a taxi, it is kind of your car. You pay the driver and you keep the car. So, this is one of those few cases where, because it belongs to me, I am in my car or I am in the taxi, because the taxi belongs to me as long as I pay the money. It's one of these funny exceptions. I don't know why, because you can put more people in a car, but I guess because you can actually own this transportation, it's yours. Think of it like the small boat. The small boat, one person is in it, you can be inside of it. All right? Cool. The last one we're going to do is "by". This is how you get there. So, "by" is different. When we talk about "in" and "on", you are... We are talking about how you are in the vehicle. Are you sitting on the bicycle? I can see you on it? You know, a boat is on water. But "by" just means: How did you get here? So, when someone responds to you with: "By car", "by plane", they're telling you how they got here. Not if they're in the plane, or on the plane. They are just... That's how they got there. So, how did I get here to do this video? Wouldn't you like to know. I'm kidding. I came here by car. So, yes, I was in my car and drove here, but I would tell somebody: "I got here by car, not by bus", and that would tell them the difference in the transportation I took. "How did you get here?" You like that? Good, so that's "by", this is how you did it; and the way you travelled is here, "in" and "on". Remember there is a small exception for small vehicles, so a small boat you can be in. Remember small. And a bicycle, you're always on the bicycle, because people see you sitting on it. We good? Excellent. Now, that is the lesson for transportation.

Here are the phrases we cover in the video, along with their meanings: - It's all good (it's ok) - No worries. (Don't worry, it's OK) - Sure thing (Yes. Absolutely. Of course) - For sure (Yes, Absolutely. Of course.) - I'm good (No thank you. I don't want what you are offering) - I got this/I got it (I can handle this, I don't need help) - Will do (Ok, yes, agreed) - No way (I can't believe it. That's awesome!) - That sucks (That's awful... I'm sorry to hear that) - For real? (Is that so?) (Really? Seriously?) - What the heck? (I'm not OK with this situation. I don't like this situation.) - Nice! (that's cool, that's awesome, that's interesting) - Got it (I understand) ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• HANG OUT WITH ME HERE 🙋🏼‍♀️ → Website: https://www.englishfulltime.com/ → Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stefanietheenglishcoach/ → Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theenglishcoach/ → Blog: https://www.englishfulltime.com/blog/ → Business Inquiries: stefanie@englishfulltime.com ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• SOME OF MY FAVORITE THINGS 🤗 The Book That Changed My Life: http://amzn.to/2GjHgGx Best Headphones Ever (super expensive, but 100% worth it!): http://amzn.to/2GjIMZa Awesome Travel-Sized Mic: http://amzn.to/2FCZ4eN My Favorite Backpacking Pack (super durable, I love it!): http://amzn.to/2FOasrs Every Woman Needs This: http://amzn.to/2FtaeXn If you travel with electronics, you need this: http://amzn.to/2Fw0Geh Luggage Organizers (so simple, yet so useful!): http://amzn.to/2Fw4oEJ Best Webcam (still PERFECT after 5+ years!): http://amzn.to/2HsF5Qv Improve Your Writing & Master Punctuation (not for beginners): http://amzn.to/2tBUn3i Learn The Secrets Of Good Writing (not for beginners): http://amzn.to/2Fwp4MR (NOTE: These are affiliate links) ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's) 🌎 Where are you from? -California 🗣 Do you speak another language? -Yes, I learned Spanish and speak fluently. ✈️ What countries have you traveled to? -Mexico, Argentina, Ireland, UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy 🇦🇷 Have you ever lived abroad? -Yes, I have lived in Argentina since January 2013 🤷🏼‍♀️ You speak too fast. Using Subtitles to Enhance Your English Skills

25:09
Probably all of us watch videos in English - movies, television, YouTube. We can then take learning a step further and use subtitles to help improve our English skills. Reading, in my humble opinion, is a bit of a lost art (also undervalued as a learning skill). Nowadays, people tend to read less and watch more. Practicing your listening skills is great, but why not combine it with practicing your reading skills. By using subtitles, you're utilizing a variety of learning styles. Reading subtitles helps us understand the material better and allows us to learn new words & phrases. LINKS TO PRACTICE & IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH Improve Your Listening w/ Audiobooks. English Vocabulary: Talking about RAIN

06:17
http://www.engvid.com/ Love it or hate it, we all have to deal with rain. In this essential vocabulary lesson, you will learn some words and expressions that describe rain. How do you talk about light rain and heavy rain? What is the difference between "drizzling", "spitting", and "pouring"? What is a "puddle"? What does it mean if you are "soaked" or "drenched"? Grab an umbrella, and get ready to improve your vocabulary. You will be singing in the rain in no time! http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-talking-about-rain/ TRANSCRIPT Hey, guys. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking. And man, it is really coming down out there. So, today, you're lucky. I've been inspired to talk about the rain with you guys today. On the board, I have a lot of vocabulary, nouns, verbs, expressions, words associated with rain and talking about it. So, first, we have: "Rain falls from the clouds." So, here's a picture of a cloud and the rain is falling. Different things we say about the rain. So you can say simply: "Oh, look. It's raining!" So "rain" can be a noun, like "rain falls", "rain". It can also be a verb, so: "It's raining." You can say: "I love the rain." or: "I hate the rain." You can also just say in general, without the article "the": "I love rain.", "I hate rain." One or the other. You can say: "It's gunna rain.", "It's going to rain." If you're making a prediction, you look at the clouds, it looks dark. You can say: "Uh-oh. It's going to rain." Very common phrase. -"How is it outside?" -"Well, it's a little rainy." So, you can use the term "rainy" to mean there is a little rain outside. And you can also talk about rainy days. So: "I love rainy days. On rainy days, I love to stay inside, and read a book, watch a movie." Maybe you hate rainy days, because you want to be outside. Now, when the rain gets very extreme, you have a storm. So, this is when you can see lightning. Here's a picture of a lightning bolt. And you can hear thunder. So, lightning is the flash you can see; thunder is the sound you can hear. And you might say: "Uh-oh. Look, it's a thunderstorm." So there is a thunderstorm outside; lots of thunder, lots of lightning, lots of rain. So, obviously, when it rains, you need to bring an umbrella. So I have mine here with me today. And during a rainstorm, you also need a raincoat. I don't have a raincoat. I never thought to buy one really. I don't know. A lot of people have raincoats. And you can also wear boots or rain boots, because they are waterproof. Now, "waterproof" is an adjective that you can use in many contexts. So, you can have a waterproof watch. Right? Waterproof boots, waterproof clothing. Okay? So, to protect you from the rain or from water in other situations. Below, we have some more intermediate and advanced vocabulary related to rain. So if you want to talk about the difference between light rain or heavy rain, here are some words and expressions you can use. First, if the rain is light outside, it's possible to say: "Mm, it's drizzling. It's just drizzling." or: "It's just spitting." So, if you look at "spit", it's the same as the verb "spit", which is to go like this: "thhto". Then, think of the rain like spitting down on you. So you can say: "Mm. It's just drizzling." or: "It's just spitting." Okay? If it's very heavy, you can say: "It's pouring." So, you can pour juice, pour milk, pour liquid out of a container. Same idea. It's pouring outside. Or, you can use the expression that I used when I first started the video. "It is really coming down. Like really coming down." And when, you know, when you say "it", everyone understands you're talking about the rain, because when it's raining, most people know that it's raining outside, unless you work in an office with no windows. And then I'm sorry. So, if the rain is very heavy and you didn't bring an umbrella, and you come inside and you have water on your clothes, on your shoes, on your face, everywhere, you can say: "I am drenched." or: "I am soaked." You can also say: "I got drenched.", "I got soaked by the rain." Okay? So, here's a causative sentence. "I got drenched.", "I got soaked by the rain." And here, if you're wondering what we call the little space of water, the little holes of water that appear after a rainfall, they are called "puddle". "Puddles", I'm sorry. So: "Look at that huge, big puddle." Not poodle, which is the dog, but puddle, which is the water. So, just to review: "Rain falls from the clouds." You can say: "It's raining.", "I love the rain.", "I hate the rain.", "It's a little rainy outside.", "I hate rainy days." If the rain is light: "It's drizzling/spitting." If it's heavy: "It's pouring.", "It's really coming down.", "I get drenched.", "I get soaked.", "Look at that puddle.", "Bring an umbrella.", "Bring your raincoat.", "Bring your boots." and: "Stay dry." Okay?

The Water Cycle | Educational Video for Kids

03:57
Hello friends, and welcome to another new Happy Learning video. Today we will learn about the water cycle. Earth, which is the planet we live on, is known as the Blue planet because as much as 3/4 of the planet's surface is ...water! And water is so very important because without it, there would be no life. Without it, theses sweet little otters wouldn't exist, or theses playful bears, nor this conceited bird, or even us, the human beings. That's why we must look after it. We should conserve our water well and most of all, we must maintain our rivers and oceans clean. Did you know water never stands still, but is always in constant movement, even though at times it doesn't seem like it? This water movement is what is called the Water cycle. Now let's learn more about it. When the sun warms the water on the Earth's surface, it evaporates, converting itself into water vapor or steam and begins its incredible journey flying into the sky, up towards the atmosphere. This first stage of its journey is known as evaporation. When the water converts in vapor, it rises towards the atmosphere, then cools down transforming itself into clouds. This second stage of its journey it called condensation. Once the water has condensated, and turned into a cloud, it continues its amazing journey by being blown by the wind, traveling from one place to another. Clouds are actually tiny little drops of water suspended in the air, but when the clouds grow, they collect more and more water. These water drops then crash into each other and become bigger drops of water. Then at some point, they end up falling to the ground in the form of rain or even snow. This stage of the water cycle is called precipitation. The water which falls to the ground, which precipitates in the form of either rain or snow may land in rivers, or even on the ground to then seep through to subterranean currents of water. All this water must continue its long journey, covering large amounts of distances until it finally reaches the sea. When it arrives at the big blue sea, it will once again begin the process...evaporation, condensation, precipitation. That's why it is called the water cycle, because it forms a never-ending circle. Isn't the water cycle just so incredible? Well that's all for now, until the next video, and don't forget to subscribe to Happy Learning.
