Ask This Old House landscape designer Jenn Nawada heads to Phoenix to recreate the desert in a homeowner’s front yard. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 1 day Cost: $2,000 and Up Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Creating a Desert Landscape: Shovel Wheelbarrow Hand truck Level Compacter Shopping List: Soil Boulders Variety of desert plants Cardboard ¼” stone Modular pavers Steps: 1. Dig out the outline of a walkway about 3’ wide and 3-4” deep. Give the outline a slight curve to add visual interest to the walkway. 2. To mimic the hills of the desert, shovel piles of soil onto the landscape into seemingly random mounds. 3. Determine a few locations to place boulders in the landscape. Dig holes in those locations about 4” deep and roughly the width of the boulder being placed. 4. Carefully load each boulder onto a hand truck, wheel it into position, and roll the boulder into its final place. Backfill around the hole to make it look like it really belongs there. 5. Stage the variety of desert plants across the landscape. Things aren’t really clumped together in the desert, so keep the plants spread out. Be mindful of when plants bloom, if ever, to have an even spread of color across the landscape. 6. Once each plant is in its desired position, plant them all with the shovel. Dig down just about as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. 7. To plant cacti, wrap a piece of cardboard around the needles and move the cactus only by holding onto the cardboard. 8. Give everything a good watering. 9. Put down a layer of ¼” stone on the outlined walkway and level it. 10. Compact the walkway with a compacter. 11. Lay down the pavers over the walkway base in a running bond pattern. Resources: In any landscape design, Jenn recommends looking for natural cues in the surrounding area to recreate in a controlled way in your yard. In this case, she identified an abundance of small stones coating the ground, plants spread far apart from each other, and undulating hills. Those cues informed the design in the homeowner’s front yard. Jenn installed boulders, red yucca, lantana, bougainvillea, a few variety of cacti, and a Chilean mesquite tree. These can be found at nurseries, particularly in the Southwest region of the US and in zones 9 and 10. Expert assistance for this segment was provided by Rod Pappas and Xeriscapes Unlimited, Inc. A stronger trellis will allow greater weight from anything grown vertically, including tomatoes, cucumber, melon, etc. Nylon netting is great, but it breaks down from months of sitting in the sun and can fail at the most inopportune times.

Background Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music Step Two in my SEVEN STEP GARDEN DESIGN GUIDE - a DIY Garden Design Guide that will take you from ideas in your head to a PLAN of action! Learn more at https://howtogardendesign.com/ Sign up at the site for access to some FREE ‘Cheat Sheets’ and an additional video series (my Idea Generator series) on this specific step. The Cheat Sheets go hand in hand with the videos – easy to follow along and help you unpack your images. --- This video looks in depth at ‘Unpacking’ an image and defining what you like. It covers: • Breaking down an image into components • How to describe what you like about the components (looking at physical elements and design elements) • Changing it up! • Summarise your findings – creating key criteria to follow during the design process Part One (https://youtu.be/_jAT3QNc6bQ) looked at where you can find images. This video walks you through how to us them effectively. The key to this process is to repeat it with multiple images. Over time, you will build a good flexible list of criteria for any activity or feature you want to include in your design. It may be slow at first, but you will quickly learn how to unpack any inspiration. Why do we use this method? Most people design their gardens in the following way: 1. Find an idea or image they like 2. Pick an area of the garden they think it should go 3. Try to copy and paste that image in that space 4. Repeat with another activity/ feature/ idea or image They end up with a garden full of individual, separate spaces. There is no connection or relationship between each activity or space. In fact, people often do not get that far. They begin building or developing that one space. It is then too difficult or boring. So, they are left with a collection of half-finished ideas or spaces. After a few years they repeat this process again, tackling each space as an individual project. We want to do the opposite of this. Using this unpacking technique, you will develop a list of flexible criteria for each activity, feature or other space. These criteria are critical to your overall design. They: • Are more flexible than copying and pasting from an image • Allow you to collect ideas from many different sources of inspiration • Let you know when you have ‘successfully’ designed an area • Can adapt to changes in your situation – funds, materials, other expert adjustments You will tweak and change your criteria for activities or features a few times. Every change is a chance to refine what you want in your design and backyard. This step in the design guide is accompanied by a bonus video series – the Idea Generator guide. This series breaks down the step into specific pieces. Check out https://howtogardendesign.com/ to access FREE ‘Cheat Sheets’ that go hand in hand with this series. If you’re not sure of what you’d like in your backyard garden, consider researching some of the following: Specific activities - swimming pools, trampolines, backyard entertaining, outdoor dining, hammocks, cubby houses, playgrounds, basketball hoops, tennis courts, water slides, gyms…. Vegetable gardens - raised beds, companion planting, interior gardens, herbs… Specific features – garden beds, feature trees, water features, ponds, bonsais, climbing trellis, sculptures, flower beds, pots, urns, feature walls, mosaics, flower beds… These are some of many different options. I’m sure you can come up with many more. This is before you even consider specific garden styles - Japanese gardens, French provincial gardens, English gardens, Cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, Modern gardens, Contemporary gardens, Native gardens, Formal gardens, Coastal gardens, Low maintenance gardens, Desert gardens, Tropical gardens, Drought tolerant gardens, Tuscan gardens, Country gardens, Xeriscape gardens, Colonial gardens, Southwest gardens, Spanish gardens, Winter gardens… The list is literally endless.

Why the redevelopment of Cardiff is a concern for people living nearby: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/redevelopment-cardiff-concern-people-living-14807150. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk8lqOUEadACkZyagXU3x1w?sub_confirmation=1 Anyone living in the centre of Cardiff fully expects it to be busy. But the changing face of the capital also brings major challenges – and none more so than for the city's infrastructure. With the capital undergoing the latest stage of its evolving transformation, and new offices being built for thousands of workers to use every day, what impact is that having on transport and residents who live less than a mile away from new developments rising up in the city skyline? A new regeneration scheme is set to change Cardiff and the area around Cardiff Central train station. The Central Square development is one of the biggest changes Cardiff – and Wales – has ever seen. As well as a 130,000 sq ft office for law firm Hugh James and the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, the development will as see a new £120m headquarters for BBC Cymru Wales, a new 270,000 sq ft public sector hub for the UK Government, and a new bus station for the capital. By 2020 the city will look completely different. But how does all that new office space affect locals living nearby? A mile west is Grangetown. Nearly 20,000 people live there, according to the 2011 census, with more than a third over the age of 30. While most enjoy the proximity to the city centre there are now concerns that so much office space does not have anywhere nearly enough parking to accommodate the influx of workers. Indeed plans for the sites include just over 100 spaces for both sites – despite the fact more than 4,000 people are expected to work there. So what are the plans exactly – and what are people saying about them? What will the buildings look like? Both the new BBC and HMRC building are part of a wider development in the city between Cardiff Central train station and the Principality Stadium. Under construction as part of the Central Square development is a fully-let office at One Central Square with more than 1,000 staff, the 135,000 sq ft No 2 Central Square office scheme which is pre-let to law firm Hugh James, and Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture Studies as well as a new bus station for the city. The £100m BBC Cymru Wales building will have cutting-edge technology – including a virtual reality enabled studio, a garden area for filming weather forecasts and a water capture system to feed into the water supplies of its toilet facilities. The 150,000 sq ft building project was designed by Foster + Partners and was handed over earlier this year to be fitted out. Some 9,000 sq ft of ground floor space is to be set aside for retail units – with Boots, Tesco, Greggs and Pret a Manger understood to be lined up to occupy the space. Just around the corner will be the new HMRC headquarters in a new UK Government hub. The tax office, currently located in Llanishen, will move to the new 226,000 sq ft building from 2020. The 12-storey building will be known as 6 Central Square, with HMRC occupying just over 87% of the building, #Why, #redevelopment, #Cardiff, #concern, #people, #living, #nearby #Cardiff

In this video, I wrapped the fence around the trees on my property. It was daunting to me that sometimes the remedy for trees in your fence line is to remove the tree. Well, I am sure that these trees were on my property before the house was even built. Therefore, I chose to work around the tree. Using advance carpentry techniques, I was able to work the fence through the tree, without actually cutting it. I used my Ryobi jigsaw to make the natural from cuts. I then used my DeWalt drills to attached the boards with deck mate screws. Unfortunately, I do not have a video of the fence install, but stick around and subscribe as I will be posting more videos of work around the house. I plan on building a deck, as well as doing a kitchen remodel.

How To Build Pergolas And Arbors http://www.buschwackedarbors.com/ How to build pergolas and arbors for your yard broken down in easy steps to follow. Pergolas and arbors accent outdoor space and offer wonderful places to create memories with family and friends. They also provide shade and space for plants to grow or, in the case of an arbor, provide an entrance for a garden or landscape. Both are relatively easy to build by following a few steps. First, decide how big you want it to be. This will dictate the amount of wood needed and will give you a rough idea of how much money your project will cost. An average size is about 10 feet by 10 feet and, depending on the wood you use, should cost approximately $3,000.00. Next, obtain some plans online or from a favorite outdoor design and garden magazine. These plans will give you the details on the tools and materials you need. Pressure-treated pine is one of the most highly recommended woods because it is easy to obtain, affordable and it will resist rot and insects as well. Redwood and cypress are also ideal, but the ultimate choice will be yours. You will need to dig holes in your yard to accommodate the posts. The details about the depth of your pergola’s holes will be laid out in your plans. However, as a general guide, you never want the holes to be less than 10 inches deep. The actual depth will depend on the size of your pergola. You will install the posts first, then attach the support beams. Once this is done, you will add the crossbeams so that they are notched and will fit over the support beams. Cut and affix your post trims and braces. Fasten braces in 45-degree angles to the posts using screws. Finally, fit the top slats on and cap the posts. You can also get more details on how to build pergolas and arbors online or from wood project websites or contact us directly for help. We can help you with your pergola or arbor project of any size and we have the experience and knowledge to add value to your property. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkUUPEEJmgs5KhvXzhZKpiw/videos

Here are Top 5 beautiful patio cover plants Growing vines over your patio covers improve shade and help cool off the patio area. While a plain pergola or arbor has some appeal with its clean lines, covering it with plants adds texture and color to your patio, as well as a cover that can provide much-needed shade. 🌸SUBSCRIBE our channel IT'S FREE ▶ http://bit.ly/gardengraduate 🌸 Living, breathing plants not only contribute shade and privacy, they also offer color, freshness, and soft, romantic fragrance. Below are our top 5 favorite patio cover plants. 🌻🌸1.Bougainvillea: It’s not the flowers that make this plant so colorful, it’s actually the magenta bracts. The flowers are just tiny and white. Have a closer look. The bracts can be seen in all shades of pink and purple, and also red, yellow, white, salmon and orange. To use Bougainvillea to shade your balcony or patio, Use a pot that you can just barely wrap your arms around, and that is taller than it is wide. Water deeply on the day you plant it, and on each of the three following days. Thereafter, you only need to water once a week (or if you see signs of drought stress), but always water deeply (until you see water flowing out of the drainage holes). 🌻🌸2.Trumpet Vine: It’s hard to find a more beautiful plant than trumpet vine. Whether you train it up a trellis or use it as a sprawling shrub, the lovely flowers will decorate your outdoor space in warm temperatures. This flowering vine flourishes in hot, dry climates with full sun, making it a beautiful addition to Southwestern gardens. 🌻🌸3.Mandevilla: The Mandevilla plant has become a common patio plant, and rightfully so. The brilliant Mandevilla flowers add a tropical flair to any landscape. All make beautiful additions to the patio and/or entrance to a backyard and add lots of color to a small backyard with lots of sun. Partial shade will mean fewer flowers. They really are easy to care for and add color wherever they are growing. 🌻🌸4.Passion Flower: Their vibrant colors and heady fragrance make the passion flower plant a welcome addition to any garden. Because they are vines, the best place for growing passion flowers is along a trellis or fence. Tropical passion flowers need full sun and well-drained soil. Two applications of a well-balanced fertilizer per year, once in early spring and one in midsummer are all the passion flower care you’ll need. 🌻🌸5.Climbing Roses: Where space is at a premium, patio climbing roses offer the perfect solution. With an average height between 7 and 8ft, they perform well in small areas and can be potted or planted. Whether potted or planted, they perform extremely well and if planted in a sunny position, you could even see flowers in December. Easy to maintain and control, it can be pruned back each year to control height and will spring back with vigor. Text messages are returned within 24 hours. Click Here to Contact: https://goo.gl/TMPNEL Hello and welcome to the official GreenBox Grown seed banks page! My name is Dylan and in this video I am going to show you guys exactly how to properly purchase your cannabis seeds online to help get your gross started and I'm going to cover different things such as the differences between Autoflower and regular seeds, as well as high THC versus high-cbd. Now the seed banks I have listed on this page are highly recommended because they are easy to use and have a great reputation. And they also ship worldwide! So in this video I am also going to show you guys how to get your seeds delivered right to your doorstep via stealth shipping,so let's go check that out. Okay so here we are at the seed banks page right where you guys are on the website right now, and the first thing I want to explain is this is mainly a list of our recommended seed banks which are essentially websites that you can order cannabis seeds from, And they will ship worldwide to you. So you will see we have several different choices, and first off Growers choice is a seed Bank located actually in California, so for us Growers this is a really fast delivery option. Next is the Single Seed Centre which is just like it says in the title, you can order one seed of each strain at a time, so you don't have to buy them in packs like most sites offer. And then the rest of these web sites like the ministry of cannabis, seedsupreme and Amsterdam marijuana seeds. I recommend all of these they are really great and carry all the big-name strains and then they also have worldwide shipping as well. It is very fast and very stealth. So now that you guys have seen the recommended list of seed banks I have here, I want to go over a lot of the questions that I get by most of my clients about buying seeds. and the first and most popular question Is which strain should I start with as a beginner grower. Because there are definitely strains that are harder to grow than others, and take a little bit more experience and skill. So I always recommend first off, white widow, blue dream, or Northern Lights. Those are three very basic and easy strains to grow and you are going to get really good results and the large yields from them without having to know much about growing or have a lot of experience. So those are the three big main ones there are others, but just to give you guys a quick list that is what I will start with. So when it comes to choosing your seeds, if you don't know a strain or you don't want to go with one of those three, there are kind of a few things you want to start with and decide on before you pick a particular strain. So the first thing and really the most important is are you looking to grow high THC strain or a high CBD. So some people actually find that CBD works a lot better for them than THC for whatever medical uses they are using it for. So there are seeds that you can get that will allow you to grow a plant that is really high in CBD content, and then lower and Lower in THC. So for those of you looking for that, that option is out there. And most of these seed banks to cover seeds or carry suits like that. Alright Growers so that concludes my intro on how to purchase cannabis seeds online. And if you have any questions or looking for a particular strain, feel free to hit me up down below in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, there should be a green circular button in that corner that you can hit to open up a chat with myself. Where you can feel free to ask me any questions you may have. As always thank you guys for watching and until next time… Happy Growing!!!
