Allergic reaction: Urban Planet fires Canadian teen for bad reaction to bell peppers - TomoNews
SASKATOON, CANADA — An 18-year-old girl was fired from her job at a clothing store after she had an allergic reaction to bell peppers. Clothes retailer Urban Planet fired Danielle Duperreault, 18, from one of its Saskatoon stores after she ate something she shouldn’t have and went into anaphylactic shock, CBC reported. Danielle is allergic to the touch and smell of mangoes, which make her hands blister. But hot peppers are her real worst enemy and even bell peppers are enough to trigger an anaphylactic reaction, she told CBC. So when Danielle ate something on her break that she shouldn’t have, she started to choke at work. She hadn’t even made it to the hospital when the store manager sent a message saying she was fired. Danielle told CBC she couldn’t find her EpiPen, a medical device that provides an antidote to anaphylaxis. She had only worked at the store for two months. The CEO of Urban Planet’s parent company said sorry to Danielle and offered to pay her until she finds a new job. But Danielle said she was still waiting for an apology from her former supervisor, according to CBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Imagine this alternative could help millions of people quit smoking and came with only a fraction of the harmful chemicals that cigarettes do. Well, you don’t have to imagine it. It exists. E-cigarettes are the most innovative and promising smoking-cessation product yet invented. So, public health officials and anti-tobacco activists are all in favor of this life-saving innovation, right? Actually, they’re almost all totally against it. Why? Because, incredibly, they make no substantial distinction between e-cigarettes and real cigarettes -- even though they are completely different products. To begin with, e-cigarettes aren’t cigarettes. They contain no tobacco. Instead, a liquid containing nicotine derived from tobacco leaves is vaporized, and users of e-cigarettes inhale that vapor. Vapor, mind-you – not smoke. This is significant because the real harm from tobacco comes from the combustion process, which releases hundreds of toxic compounds known as tar. Since e-cigarettes have no tobacco and no combustion, they release no tar. This makes them, according to Britain’s Department of Health, at least 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes do contain nicotine, an addictive drug. However, there is little evidence that nicotine alone is bad for you, making it similar to, say, caffeine--a drug used every day by millions of people. Brad Rodu, an oral cancer specialist at the University of Louisville, put it this way: “I love coffee, and I’m sure I could get caffeine if I smoked my coffee beans…but I would be paying a much different price in overall health [if I did].” In other words, when it comes to addictive substances like caffeine or nicotine, it isn’t the addictive substance that’s harmful; it’s how it’s delivered. As South African psychiatrist Mike Russell said about cigarettes: “[People] smoke for [the] nicotine, but they die from the tar.” And again, there’s no tar in e-cigarettes. Does this all mean e-cigarettes are completely safe? Of course not. Nothing is completely safe. E-cigarettes are a relatively new innovation so more research is needed, especially on long-term effects. There’s also a place for sensible regulation to ensure consumer safety. But unlike normal everyday products, any potential risk posed by e-cigarettes is far outweighed by a real – not potential – good: saving lives by providing the nicotine that smokers enjoy without delivering the deadly toxins that can kill them. Many former smokers have successfully used e-cigarettes to help them kick their nicotine addiction altogether. A recent study in an Oxford Journal peer-reviewed publication, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, said that e-cigarettes could reduce smoking-related deaths by 21 percent. That’s thousands of lives every year. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/whats-wrong-e-cigarettes

Skin conditions: Preservative in personal care products may cause horrible eczema - TomoNews
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — A growing number of people are getting painful skin allergies, and it's all thanks to a chemical found in everyday personal products. Medical Daily reports that methylisothiazolinone, or MI, is a preservative used to prevent unwanted bacteria growth in a wide range of bath and beauty products. Though labelled safe and non-toxic, higher concentrations of the substance have been known to irritate the skin and cause a type of eczema known as contact dermatitis. Symptoms include an itchy red rash that can form blisters, or become dry, cracked, and scaly. Topical medication can alleviate symptoms, but curing the inflammation usually involves avoiding the irritant completely. Although Europe has since restricted the use of MI, the substance is still allowed in the U.S., where it's listed as an ingredient even in products advertised as 'hypoallergenic'. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Qigong for Allergies My Spring Forest Qigong Healing Story
More than 20 years ago, Aleksander Nechayev developed severe season allergies. He dates the onset to 1986 right after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Aleksander had been living close to the area in the former Soviet Union where he grew-up. He says each spring since then he has developed severe allergy symptoms each spring, "very difficult to breathe, very difficult to see because of red eyes. All the things that allergy sufferers experience. I've tried different medicines. They give relief but didn't cure me. This season I've lived allergy free and I credit it to the [Spring Forest Qigong] Active Exercises I've been doing. [for the past six months] I didn't take even one pill. Since there weren't any other changes in my lifestyle, diet or anything, I credit the [Spring Forest Qigong] active exercise. Channels were cleared. Immune system adjusted and here I am, happy and allergy free." -- Aleksander Nechayev

The Most Radioactive Places on Earth
Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video. https://xkcd.com/radiation/ DOSES MAY VARY The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents). Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only. The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. Videos of stoned dogs have been posted on YouTube and show what happens when people's precious pooches accidently eat food laced with pot. Now that medical marijuana is legal in 23 states, pot-infused edibles are more common than ever and scenarios with dogs getting high are also more common. A vet told Inside Edition what to do if your dog ingests marijuana.

What is a fluoroscopy?
Fluoroscopy uses x-rays to create images of the internal organs in real time. Computers help create images of the structures while oral contrast is used to enhance these images. Fluoroscopy is used to help diagnosis problems with your esophagus, stomach, duodenum and small bowels. This procedure allows doctors to visualize the movement of oral contrast through the digestive system in real time. If you are scheduled for a fluoroscopy, don't eat or drink anything, other than water, after midnight. You should have had no other contrast studies within 24-48 hours of your exam. Bring a list of your current medicines. You may take your regular medicine with small amounts of water. Drink plenty of water the day before and after the exam. Tell the nurse or technologist if you are allergic to any medicine or have received a high density contrast procedure (example: barium swallow or CT scan). For more information on fluoroscopy and other diagnostic testing, visit our website http://www.mdanderson.org/patient-and-cancer-information/cancer-information/cancer-topics/detection-and-diagnosis/diagnostic-tests/di-procedures.html?_ga=1.118058185.110515486.1442323176 Request an appointment at MD Anderson by calling 1-877-632-6789 or online at: https://my.mdanderson.org/RequestAppointment?cmpid=youtube_appointment_radiation

Strange allergies: Woman allergic to her boyfriend, so she dumps him - TomoNews
CHENGDU, CHINA - A 20-something-year-old woman in China nicknamed Wei Wei went to her local doctor because her face continually broke out in a rash. The doctor asked Wei Wei the usual slew of questions, such as ‘are you on any medication?’, ‘do you have a pet?’, and ‘have you come into any contact with any flowers or plants recently?’ The answers were all negative. Finally, Wei Wei commented that her face always broke out in a rash after making out with her boyfriend and that the symptoms had started around the time they’d started getting physically closer. The doctor ran a test of the boyfriend’s saliva and lo-and-behold it turns out that Wei Wei was allergic to a combination of the enzymes in his saliva and his hormones. The doctor told Wei Wei that her allergic reaction was just her body’s over reaction to her boyfriend’s chemical make up and it could be cured. However, Wei Wei figured that getting the treatment would be too time consuming and expensive, she figured it’d just be easier to get a new boyfriend. Thankfully, they didn’t get much further than kissing before they broke up. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Asian flush, explained
It's not because they're drunker than you are. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Asian flush, also widely known as Asian glow, is when Chinese, Japanese and Korean people turn red after drinking alcohol. What causes Asian glow? Genetics, basically. Around 36% of Northeast Asians are deficient in one of the enzymes that metabolizes alcohol, due to a gene mutation called ALDH2*2. This leads to a buildup of a toxic substance called acetaldehyde, which causes Asian flush and can also cause cancer, especially esophageal cancer. /// Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. How does placebo effect work? | #aumsum #kids #education #science #learn
Placebo in Latin means 'I shall please' and this is what placebos do. Placebos are inactive sugar pills, injections, etc., that look like real medications or treatments. In most cases, they relieve pain and make us feel better, even though they are not actual medicines. This effect of placebos on our body is called the placebo effect. Now, one of the reasons why placebos are effective is that when we take them, our mind perceives placebos as real medications. Hence, our brain reacts to the placebo in a manner which is similar to when we take real medications. Thus, our brain releases natural painkillers like endorphins that help relieve pain. In addition to this, it also decreases the production of stress hormones, thus making us feel better. Also, don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Diffusion weighted whole body scanning technique (DWIBs)
St Mary's Hospital MRI scanning department are one of the very few hospitals in the UK using the innovative whole body diffusion-weighted whole-body (DWIBs) scanning technique as a direct replacement for the whole body nuclear medicine we previously used. This scan is used to assess the spread of cancer and metastasis at the start of diagnosis and also during and after treatments. Patients are now spared from travelling to the mainland and can have the scans performed on site at the same time as other scans such as CT. This saves further time and expense, and a more accurate and higher quality scan and diagnosis is now available, aiding the planning of treatment. Waiting times are shorter, and with a scan time of 30mins can be slotted into a patient’s normal daily schedule, with scan times on all week days, some weekends, and evenings, giving greater flexibility for patients. The use of this technique has resulted in amazing changes for the better in patient care. This video was created for the "Supporting Excellence in Healthcare" category for the KM&T Isle of Wight NHS Trust Awards in January 2015. The sponsor for this category was Allocate Software.

What happens when you get a cannula in hospital?
Zoe gets a cannula so the nurses can give her medication. She used to find it difficult to get a cannula, but now she is ok with it. She smiles when she tells us that having a chat and getting cold spray really helps her. Many children feel much better about having a procedure when they see other children being ok with it. Sometimes imagining what is going to happen is worse than actually having the procedure. Depending on the age and ability of the child you can watch this video alone or together with your child to prepare for hospital. More information about our charity on: www.wwcih.org.uk
