Vitamin/Supplment Safety Part 1 Vitamin E

07:06
The issue of vitamin and supplement safety continues to be a popular item in the national media. When you are confronted with these articles, keep in mind a couple of key points. #1 newspapers, radio, TV etc. exist to sell advertising space. It is far more effective to keep you afraid because you will be more likely to be drawn to the story if fear is involved. #2 Pharmaceutical companies make money on your misery. A healthy person is their great enemy. Let's jump right to the conclusion and for that I am quoting Michael Long, ND of Optimum Integrative Health. "Even with totally irresponsible use, you would be hard pressed to be killed by your vitamins... In truth, studies are published every day showing the safety and health promoting effects of vitamins, especially when used responsibly (i.e. used for a specific purpose, after objective testing showed a deficiency), and according to the evidence. If you want to focus on something that will actually kill you, open your medicine cabinet and look at the drugs that stare back at you. Close to 1 million people die in North America every year as a direct result of adverse effects from prescription drugs. The safety record of pharmaceutical drugs is not even comparable to vitamins." The European Union has put a number of the likelihood of problems from taking supplements. Their data has suggested that pharmaceutical agents are 62,000 times more likely to cause serious harm or death than supplements. To put that in perspective let's say that if one person died of taking some supplement or vitamin, at the same time the entire population of the Carson Valley in Nevada would be wiped out. If that doesn't convince you of supplement safety, consider that you are more likely to drown in your bathtub than die of taking a vitamin or supplement. I will divide this talk into two parts, one to deal with vitamin E and prostate cancer and one to discuss fish oil and prostate cancer. The topic of vitamin E and prostate cancer reverberates around the web from some "studies" completed in 2011. From this study, men taking vitamin E were 17% more likely to contract prostate cancer than those who didn't. Sounds ominous, doesn't it? Doctors around the country picked up on this news and told their patients and many doctors went on talk shows and had interviews with high profile TV shows to sound the alarm. This study used a form of E called all-rac-alpha-tocopheryl acetate that has little or nothing to do with natural mixed tocopherols that you get from quality supplement companies. The medical community at large continues to show a surprising level of ignorance when talking about synthetic versus natural vitamins. This doesn't make sense considering how much these doctors pay attention to detail when it comes to selecting a new putter. These same doctors would be horrified to find that their new Jaguar had its leather seats replaced with vinyl. But when it comes to selecting vitamins for a study, any cheap vitamin variant will do. Several sources have listed this all-rac-alpha tocopheryl acetate form of vitamin as having significant health problems. Now we can add another, increased risk of prostate cancer. So don't make the same mistake and confuse a natural form of vitamin E with its synthetic counterparts. It is also important to get mixed tocopherols as the alpha form can displace the gamma tocopherol that has significant anti-cancer properties. We have known since the 1990's that too much alpha tocopherol can be a problem. One study at the Johns Hopkins School of public health showed that men with the highest levels of gamma tocopherols had a five-fold decrease in prostate cancer. By selecting the alpha form of this vitamin imposter, cancer increased for two probably reasons. One is the reduction of the protective gamma tocopherol and also the action of a petro-chemical toxin. Remember I said that a healthy person is a great enemy of the big pharma. The FDA is taking steps to pull helpful supplements off the market and it appears that they are using these poor research projects as ammo to help promote this cause. At OVitaminPro.com our priority is providing you with confidence that your supplements are of the highest quality. If you are working with us, we will take great care to be sure that you are getting the supplements that will move your health in the proper direction.

Most of the health benefits of vitamin E described above come from studies involving only form of vitamin E called alpha-tocopherol, which is only one of eight forms. Recently, researchers have focused more attention on other forms of vitamin E as well, with particular focus on tocotrienol, which some consider the “the 21st century vitamin E.” (9) Alpha- and beta-tocotrienols have been found to be the least active forms overall, while delta- and gamma-tocotrienols are the most active. Recent findings suggest that it’s not that alpha-tocopherol is harmful, but it may interfere with absorption of other forms of vitamin E, including other tocopherols and tocotrienols that are needed for heart and cognitive health. (10) Vitamin E deficiencies (meaning intake of all isomers) have long been thought to be rare, and when they do happen, it’s commonly believed that it’s almost never caused by a poor diet. However, some experts believe that many people today are actually not getting enough vitamin E from their diets in natural form, especially too little tocotrienols. There are specific situations that may lead to a vitamin E deficiency due to malfunctions in terms of how nutrients are absorbed. A premature infant who is born weighing less than 3.5 pounds is in danger of a vitamin E deficiency, but a pediatrician who specializes in the care of newborns will typically evaluate the nutritional needs of an infant to help spot and treat this early. People with fat absorption problems, which is a common problem for those who struggle with inflammatory bowel disease, may also struggle with a vitamin E deficiency in some cases.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick explains what antioxidants are, why they are important, and how they prevent DNA damage, a well-known cancer initiator, in order to minimize damage to DNA. However, in the context of someone that already has cancer, DNA damage can activate genes that kill cancer cells. Dr. Patrick also reveals there are two major forms of vitamin E (alpha and gamma tocopherol) that have separate functions. Taking mega doses (i.e. 400 IU/day) of alpha tocopherol actually DEPLETES gamma tocopherol levels and has negative effects that may lead to prostate cancer. Multivitamin pills suck for a variety of reasons. Vitamins can be classified in to 2 categories. 1. Fat soluble Vitamins: Vitamin A, D E & K variants. 2. Water soluble Vitamins: Vitamins B & C variants. Both of them behave differently in the body. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body whereas water soluble are not. We don't regularly need fat soluble vitamins but water soluble are needed on a regular basis. A multivitamin pill combines both these groups which is not the best option for their absorption in the body. Cherry picking vitamins from whole food sources is a bad idea. Their might be several mechanisms regarding the absorption of vitamins which we still don't understand Shady manufacturing practices are employed to produce multivitamins. Synthetic derivatives are used to extract vitamins. Below is the list of items which should be avoided in multivitamins. What Is Vitamin E? Why Is Vitamin E Necessary? Facts About Vitamin E

08:14
What Is Vitamin E? Why Is Vitamin E Necessary? Facts About Vitamin E What Is Vitamin E? Vitamin E is a powerful, fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes against damage caused by free radicals and prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. The term vitamin E encompasses a group of eight compounds, called tocopherols and tocotrienols, with various subsets of each, that comprise the vitamin complex as it is found in nature. Each of these different compounds have distinct chemistries and biological effects. Why Is Vitamin E Necessary? Vitamin E is necessary for structural and functional maintenance of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle. It also assists in the formation of red blood cells and helps to maintain stores of vitamins A and K, iron, and selenium. It may have a positive effect on immune health, protect against the oxidative damage that can lead to heart disease, have preventive effects against cancer, help relieve symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and may help prevent some diabetes-related damage, particularly to the eyes. What Are The Symptoms Associated With A Vitamin E Deficiency? vitamin e deficiency Symptoms of a vitamin E deficiency include greasy stools, chronic diarrhea, and an inability to secrete bile. Traditionally upheld is the belief that vitamin E deficiency is rare in humans. People who cannot absorb dietary fat or who have rare disorders of fat metabolism cannot absorb vitamin E. In addition, premature or very low birth weight infants (less than 3.5 lbs) and individuals with rare genetic abnormalities in the alpha-tocopherol transfer protein may also be at risk for a vitamin E deficiency. However, a 2015 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that vitamin E deficiency might be more common than we thought. Those with metabolic syndrome, approximately one of three people in the United States, could be chronically deficient in vitamin E. Its findings suggest that while vitamin E appears to be readily available in the bloodstream of those with metabolic syndrome, it’s not finding its way to the tissues where it’s needed, resulting in a hidden deficiency. More research needs to be done, but these preliminary findings underscore the importance of this essential vitamin. How Much Vitamin E Does An Adult Need? According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for adults older than 14-years is 15 mg (or 22.4 IU); pregnant women of any age should get 15 mg (or 22.4 IU); and breastfeeding women of any age should take 19 mg (or 28.4 IU). Dr. Weil recommends supplementing with vitamin E that provides a minimum daily dose of 80 mg of the whole complex, including the four mixed tocopherols as well as the four mixed tocotrienols.
