Allergy Awareness Week 13 - 19 May 2013 - Allergy New Zealand

00:31
At least 1 in 10 babies born in New Zealand today will develop an allergy. Go to http://www.allergy.org.nz/Allergy+Awareness+Week+2013.html to find out more! Allergies affect up to a third of New Zealanders and if untreated have a significant impact on quality of life, particularly for children. Symptoms of asthma, eczema and/or allergic rhinitis (hayfever) can cause poor quality sleep, leading to irritability, fatigue and an inability to concentrate which has an adverse effect on children's learning and development. Some allergies, such as to food, insect venom and drugs, can also put people at risk of a life-threatening reaction (called anaphylaxis). Major indoor allergens in New Zealand include house dust mites and mould. They can be a cause of asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema. A drier, warmer home is a healthier home. Allergies are increasing in prevalence globally and New Zealand has some of the highest rates of allergies in the world. There is no cure. Management requires effective treatment of symptoms, and avoidance of the allergens triggering them. Reactions usually happen very quickly and those at risk of anaphylaxis and their family, friends and communities need to know the signs and how to respond to this emergency. Signs and Symptoms of Mold Sickness or Mold Allergy

03:48
Greetings, Eric Bakker from New Zealand. Thanks for coming back and checking out our videos. We are going to today talk about molds allergy or mold sickness. I've had few people inquire about these over the time so I thought it's about time I made a few videos on mold. This is a topic that is quite of interest to me because in my twenties, I had quite a bad problem with mold and fungus due to an old house that I was living it at the time. It was quite an old, rundown house and what I didn't know back than is that the roof was leaking. This was a long time ago, back in the '80's. So when it rained, especially heavily, I would get up to one or two inches of water in the bedroom which I would have to bail out. And the walls would end up having a black kind of slimey mold high up towards the ceiling which I really didn't understand at the time was really bad for my health. So I started developing a lot of sickness, a lot of coughs, but especially a lot of skin itching and sneezing and rhinitis and hay fever and allergies. And eventually, I got a bad bronchitis and ended up on antibiotics which spiraled me into a Candida infection. So we are going to talk today about one of the signs and symptoms of the typical mold allergy or a mold sickness. So think about it basically like a kind of a yeast or fungus that actually lives in the environment, often on a wall, not always visible. Sometimes invisible, can be inside the wall, can be in the lining, it can be high up on the roof, it could be low down where the floor is but generally, if you get a ladder and you poke around and have a really good look, you often see exactly what I am talking about. You will see little particles of blue, green or black mold if you poke around and have a look. It could even be an insulation in the wall insulation or the ceiling insulation. It is estimated that about one in four houses in America have got some type of a leaky building syndrome. I would say the figure would be just as high if not more in New Zealand and other countries. So let's look at the symptoms. I've made a list here of different ones. Some of the common ones are fatigue and weakness, just feeling worn out, feeling tired, headaches and also photophobia or light sensitivity. So being inside and finding your lights quite bright, having to wear sunglasses. Poor concentration, poor memory, difficulty finding words sometimes, or tripping over your own words, thinking you are going out of your mind. I've seen this with some people. Stiffness, joint pain, shortness of breath, sinus congestion, itchiness in the throat or the palate, in the upper palate or back of the throat, almost like you want to put your hand in there and scratch so like an itchiness. Appetite can go up and down and the body temperature can be in a state of dysregulation as well. You can feel too hot or too cold. Occasionally, I've had patient who I thought had a thyroid dysfunction when in fact, they are suffering from mold sickness. Of course, we can get a lot of visual disturbances, sore eyes, itchy eyes, so you are rubbing your eyes. It could be blurry vision. There could be many different types of things like red eyes. Some people even get bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation over it. A crazy symptom I have noticed some people get is like static shocks where they feel like electric shocks in the body. Even that has been linked to mold illness. So, as you can see, this whole raft of signs and symptoms are potential so if you have any of those signs and symptoms, you may want to get your house checked out especially if you know you've got a mold problem. And that's what I am talking about in the next video on actually to detect if you have a mold problem or not. Thanks for watching the video. I appreciate it.

Allergy Awareness - ecostore and Dr Vincent Crump

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of Allergies in the world. This is alarmingly high so we decided to talk to the experts and find out why this occurs, what we can do and more in this series on #AllergyAwareness. In this episode we look into Fragrances. There are currently over 5000 fragrances in use in cosmetics and body care but also in things you wouldn't expect such as nappies and rubbish bags! Fragrance is one of the top allergens that causes ACD (Allergen Contact Dermatitis). Unless products specifically state they are Fragrance Free they will most likely have a fragrance added to them, even if it just a 'masking' scent to cover the smell of the formulation. We'd love to show you more at blog.ecostore.co.nz Join the conversation facebook.com/ecostorenz @ecostorenz To find out more about our experts: Allergy New Zealand http://www.allergy.org.nz/ Dr Vincent Crump http://www.allergyclinic.co.nz/ To find out more about Fragrance Free click here: http://www.ecostore.co.nz/pages/fragrance-free

Are you one of those people who appear to be allergic to so many foods? A subscriber posted this question, many may be familiar with this question. If you want to do any comprehensive stool testing or food allergy testing click HERE: https://bit.ly/2qmrnY6 Your FREE Candida Report here: https://www.yeastinfection.org/free-candida-report Greetings, Eric Bakker, New Zealand naturopath. Thanks for checking out my video. I've got an interesting question here. I've got lots of questions to go through again, as usual. So here's a question from a subscriber. "Eric, do you have any suggestions for people who have allergic reactions to a lot of healthy foods. I've been on the strict candida diet for four months and my allergic reactions to things like nuts and seeds, lemon juice I get mouth tingling, eggs I get gut and nasal, nightshades and the achy joints, et cetera. I never had such reactions to these things when I was healthy. Could it be the long term allergies or simply because of leaky gut candida? Should I avoid all of these things strictly and try again when I am healed?" That's a great question. Well, the first thing I'd recommend you probably do is check out ... do a stool test on yourself to see what the heck is going on inside. You know, a stool test generally will give you a lot of good information. It's gonna show you what the microbiology of the gut is like, where the imbalances are, where your strengths are, where your weaknesses are. You don't need to do a leaky gut test if you do a stool test because that will give you a pretty good idea on how permeable the gut is. You'll be able to pick that up through the secretory IgA, through the bacterial levels, all sorts of different things. So that would be probably a smart thing to do if you've been sick for this long. You could also consider food allergy testing, you know, a blood based test for IgG, IgE antibodies to see if you're reacting to any kind of foods. That's probably maybe the first test that you may want to consider, will be the food allergy before you do a stool test. Now let's say you can't afford any testing at all. Well, fair, fair enough. Okay, if you can't afford any testing, I can appreciate that. What I recommend you do then is write down all of the foods that you're currently consuming ... all the foods! So just get a piece of paper, my piece, my love allergy sheet for example. Say you were, for example, here. You'd write all your foods down in a column here, every food that you eat. Okay? This is quite a smart thing to do. So you write nightshades, you write lemon juice, you write nuts and seeds. Define the nuts and seeds. Do you eat almonds? Do you eat brazil nuts? Do you eat poppy seeds? Do you eat sunflower seeds? I write everything down, preferably in categories: meats, dairy, vegetables, fruits, condiments, grains, all that kind of stuff, and then itemize all those. You could do it on Excel Spreadsheet. And then you've got columns on the right of that. What you wanna do then is write your severity index. All right? So meaning one, mild reaction, two, moderate reaction, three, bad reaction. So just put a tick in those columns. And then have a look at that list and then date it. So now you've established all the foods you eat, how strong a reaction is, and when you got those reactions. All right? This is a very smart thing to do, because then over time, as your gut heals, you should notice that those things are going from a strong reaction down to a moderate to a mild reaction. So, I hope that answers your question. Thanks for the question, I appreciate it.

Untreated allergic reactions caused by food can be fatal

Experts warn the public to be cautious of allergens, substances that can cause allergic reaction to the body, as allergies can sometimes be life-threatening. Allergy causes can vary from person-to-person. According to experts, common allergens are food, molds, insect bites, pollen, and drugs. Allergies are 'abnormal' responses of the body triggered by the immune system. Normally, the immune system fends off foreign substances known as antigens. As a combat mechanism, the body produces antibodies and other chemicals. However, during an allergic reaction, the body inappropriately reacts, releasing chemicals such as histamine to attack protein. When this occurs, common symptoms of allergies occur. Allergic symptoms include rashes, asthma, reddening of the eyes, among others. According to experts, most allergies are not serious and can be treated with various over the counter or prescription drugs. However, there can be times when allergies can result to severe illness, demanding immediate medical attention. If not immediately treated, it can result to death. Anaphylaxis is the life-threatening allergic reaction which causes a sudden release of chemicals by the body's immune system. When this occurs, chemicals cause the body to undergo shock, causing a sudden drop in the blood pressure and difficulty breathing. When undergoing anaphylaxis, experts said a patient must be immediately rushed to the hospital emergency room and be injected by epinephrine. This holiday season, experts warn the public to be extra cautious of food allergens as some may be present in dishes served during gatherings. According to infectious disease expert Dr. Rey Salinel, some allergens can be 'hidden' in cooked dishes. "Minsan nga hindi mo mamamalayan, pero nag-manifest sayo [ang] allergy. Ibig sabihin nakakakuha ka (Sometimes you won’t notice the food allergen until the allergic reaction manifests in your body)," he said. Common food allergens include seafood, peanuts, and eggs. Experts also added, if food is not handled properly, food allergens can be potentially cross contaminated. Cross contamination can occur if proteins from one food directly make contact with another, or indirectly transfer via utensils or hands. Cleaners such as kitchen sponges can also act as a contamination agent if microscopic allergens are transferred to plates. If plates are not washed properly, the allergens can contaminate food during next use. However, US-based National Center for Biotechnology Information clarified, allergic reactions from cross contamination depends on the amount of exposure, frequency, and the individual’s threshold dose. According to experts, ample knowledge of your specific allergen is the first step towards avoiding allergic reaction. Once you have identified what substances you are allergic to, as much as possible, avoid these. Also, when preparing food this holiday season, experts said it would help to properly label food in order to avoid unwanted allergic reactions. Further, preparing and serving food that can possibly cause allergies separately can decrease chances of contamination. Using clean utensils specifically designated for only a single food type is also recommended by experts.

Did you know that manuka honey is 4x more nutrient dense than other floral honeys in terms of its healing compounds? Manuka honey is beneficial for several reasons: 1. Improves SIBO 2. Improves ulcers 3. Eases and may eliminate allergies 4. Soothes sore throat 5. Treats acne or eczema 6. Used to treat MRSA 7. Promotes healing of wounds or infections Please keep in mind that I recommend consuming manuka honey in moderation. Dr Rodney Ford medical qualifications and clinical experience in food allergy and gluten intolerance

02:04
Food allergy and gluten intolerance, my medical experience. Welcome, I'm Dr Rodney Ford. I am going to tell you about my medical qualifications and my clinical experience. I did my medical degree (MB.BS) at the New South Wales University in Sydney, Australia. I went on to earn my fellowship which is the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and I trained in Paediatrics http://www.racp.org.nz. I then did a doctorate, a medical doctorate (MD) and I wrote this thesis, "Food Hypersensitivity in children: approaches to diagnosis". After that I ran clinics in allergy & gastroenterology in Melbourne http://www.rch.org.au, and then in London and latterly in Christchurch, New Zealand. During all of this time I have written over 100 medical reviewed journal articles. I have subsequently, gone on to write chapters in food allergy books and gastroenterology textbooks. And after all of that, I have also written 10 popular books on food allergy, gluten syndrome and eczema (which have been converted into eBooks) http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/58338 So what am I going to do with all of this experience? I can only see people in my clinic face-to-face. So, I have brought all of my clinical and medical experience together and I have created an on-line consultant service, for food allergy and food intolerance (this includes the gluten syndrome and gluten problems (gluten-related disorder). We call this the eClinic. You can subscribe to my channel to see more videos, or check out my website. http://www.DrRodneyFord.com Dr Rodney Ford

Is There A Blood Test To Determine Mold Allergy?

03:01
Hi there, Eric Bakker from New Zealand. Thanks for coming back. Thanks for watching my channel. I do appreciate it, especially if you subscribe, I'd appreciate it even more. We're doing a series on mold allergy, on mold toxicity. So now we're going to determine is there a blood test for mold allergy? How can you determine if you've got this problem? Well I just had a look on the Mayo Clinic website. And as usual with medical websites, basically they're looking at some tests. There are two tests that they recommend. One is a prick test, where they're actually going to look ... they'll have samples of mold from your area. They'll scratch the skin or prick it, and then they'll apply you know, this particular allergen to the skin to see if they can induce a response from the immune system, like a rash, or real flare response, okay? So we call that a RAST test, radio sorbent immuno test. All it is is challenging your immune system with something that's in your environment. It can be used for foods. It can be used for molds. It can be used for like you know, animal fur, or pollen, or dust mites, or things like that. I find those tests pretty crappy and useless because most people are gonna react to something. They're not really definitive. We don't know hold old the samples are that you're being challenged with, or how effective you know, the test is being applied to your condition. I find this quite a useless test. The other one that they can do is a blood draw, and to check for antibodies to you know, molds in your system. They can do that as well. But I would ditch that kind of junk. I would go more to a functional medicine doctor where they can do much more accurate tests and a wide range of parameters when it comes to mold. I mean, one website I just looked at offers a particular kind of urine test for about 150 different types of molds. So you can do blood. You can do urine. I think there's even saliva tests you can get for mold allergy. So many functional labs including Genova Diagnostics, Doctor's Data, there'll be Great Plains Laboratory. There'll be so many labs in the states that offer mold or fungus tests. So you may wanna go to your functional medicine doctor and say "Hey, I just watched Eric Becker's channel, and I've been told that I can actually do a test to determine if I've got a problem with mold," and there are many different functional tests you can do, so if you have got a problem in your house, or you have a suspicion that you might have a problem with mold, why not do a functional medicine test to determine yay or nay when you've got the problem. Then you can make up your mind whether to get out of the house, have the damage repaired, you know, we'll take it from there. But if in doubt, check it out. Get the tests done. There are tests available. There are various tests available, too many for me to mention in this video. But your naturopathic doctor, of functional medicine MD will almost certainly have some answers when it comes to the testing for mold in your body. Get it done. Thanks for tuning in, appreciate it.

New Zealand Colostrum - 100% pure, undiluted, minimally processed, 24 hour colostrum

03:10
http://www.antlerfarms.com Colostrum is known as Mother Nature’s First Food because it is the pre-milk fluid that newborn mammals consume within the first few hours of birth. Colostrum delivers a high concentration of 90 biologically active substances including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. But by far the most beneficial components in colostrum are its immune factors and growth factors. Colostrum is the only natural product that contains active immune factors. Immune factors make up our body’s immune system to provide defense against pathogens. The primary immune factors in colostrum are immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies. Immunoglobulins protect us by binding to and eliminating pathogens. They prevent viral and bacterial infections, allergies, and the growth of yeast and fungus. 70% of the cells that comprise our immune system are located in the gut. Most pathogens that invade our bodies do so through our mucosal lining. Therefore, having a healthy gut is the best defense against disease. The regular use of colostrum keeps active antibodies in our gut which combat pathogens we ingest. In addition, it seals, reinforces and heals the gut lining, acting as a barrier to prevent pathogens from entering our bloodstream. That’s why many scientists believe that colostrum is the most powerful preventative food substance that we can consume. Colostrum is also beneficial to athletic performance. The key lies in its rich growth factor matrix, led by IGF-1. IGF-1 is a highly anabolic hormone that activates cell growth and repair. Colostrum helps build lean muscle, improve strength and boost endurance. Colostrum also cuts recovery time and speeds the healing of muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries. The regenerative effects of colostrum’s growth factors extend to nearly all the body's structural cells, which makes colostrum a powerful anti-aging food. Antler Farms® New Zealand colostrum is collected from healthy, grass fed cows within 24 hours of calving. During this period the nutritional and therapeutic value of colostrum are at their highest. Note that the needs of newborn calves are always met first. This is essential to the health of calves and the preservation of the herd. Because a cow produces much more colostrum than a calf can drink, we are not taking anything away from the calf. Our colostrum is 100% pure, undiluted and minimally processed. Immediately after collection, it is transported in a chilled container to a processing facility where it is flash pasteurized and spray dried. At Antler Farms®, we are very careful to preserve all of colostrum’s biological components during each step of processing. We conduct tests to be sure that our colostrum is free of hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, chemical residues, heavy metals and other pollutants. Antler Farms® New Zealand colostrum is produced in one of the purest places on earth. As the most advanced dairy producer in the world, New Zealand is the best source for clean, high quality, grass fed colostrum. Tom Ogren: "Optimize an Allergy Fighting Landscape" | Talks at Google

01:06:25
Most people think that allergies are an unavoidable force of nature, and resign themselves each year to another season of suffering and drugs. But Tom Ogren, creator of the OPALS® plant allergy ranking system, shows that we only have ourselves to blame for the shocking increase in allergy rates, now at epidemic levels. Human (horticultural) tinkering over the past 30-40 years has resulted in a landscape that is making us sick—and if we don’t stop now, it will only get worse. In his new book The Allergy-Fighting Garden, Ogren explores the ways that we can protect ourselves, educate our communities, and transform our planet for the better.

Fast food linked to severity of asthma, eczema and rhinitis in kids

00:55
From New Zealand -- According to research published in Thorax, a diet high in fast food is associated with asthma and eczema severity in children. Researchers reviewed data on over 300,000 children ages 13-14 from 51 countries, as well as over 180,000 children ages 6-7 from 31 countries. Children were asked about any symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and eczema they may have experienced as well as their weekly diet. After controlling for risk factors, results showed that fast food was the only type of food that was linked to severity of the allergic symptoms. In particular, they found that three or more weekly servings of fast food raised risk of severe asthma by 39% among teens and 27% in the children.

Best Diet For Seborrheic Dermatitis

03:32
Hi there, Eric Bakker, a naturopath from New Zealand. We're coming back, we're talking about Seb Derm. Let's look at the best diet for Seb Derm, what are the best foods you can eat if you've got this condition? If you've got this condition and you're watching this video now, chances are you've already made changes. You've already put away those cans of soda, and energy drinks, and you put away all the candy, the ice cream, all the kind of junk. So probably the best advice I can give you if you want a really good diet for Seb Derm is to go and look at some of my videos on this channel regarding healthy eating. There are many videos regarding that. The best foods for Seb Derm are anti inflammatory foods, low allergy foods, and anti inflammatory foods. So what are anti inflammatory foods? They're the colorful vegetables in particular. Beef is prone inflammatory, be careful with red meat in particular, like beef. Beef can be egg yolks or eggs can be a bit inflammatory. So if I had a bad skin condition I would probably really focus on proteins like fish, maybe free range chicken. I'd be looking at the brassicas, excuse me, like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts. I'd be looking at spinach, celery, what other foods would I look for? Nuts and seeds, maybe some almonds, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds. I'd be looking at flax seed oil in the diet, maybe a couple of capsules of omega-3 each day. Particularly omega-3 very high in DHA, and EPA. Make sure you get a fish oil that have got both these components in it, but particularly the EPA. The EPA's the anti inflammatory one. So I would take two capsules a day of that because that's going to be anti inflammatory. I'd be looking at garlic in the diet, I'd be looking at ginger in the diet. I'd be talking out as much processed and refined foods as possible. Especially grain foods but you should be fine to eat quinoa, brown rice, they're all chia seeds, these are good foods to eat, no problem at all, white fish, but check out my videos on the healthy eating. I'm pretty sure I would've completed some videos on the anti inflammatory, the best anti inflammatory foods to eat and also the low allergy foods like cows milk and dairy's not a great food to consume if you've got a skin condition like Seb Derm. I would absolutely recommend that you take out cheese, milk, cream, all those sorts of foods from the diet. They're too congesting, they're too inflammatory, they can have a potential really for blowing that skin right up. So I would treat a Seb Derm case diet wise, the same as a psoriasis case, it's an anti fungal diet wise. All my psoriasis patients go on the candida crusher diet approach. I think that's the best approach also for Seb Derm because there are, you know there are certainly a potential there for the , for the yeast occurring on the skin surface for that to go haywire. So if we want to contain the yeast and make it behave, we need to look at an anti fungal diet. For internally, it's also going to affect the external. So don't kid yourself, what you eat very much affects your external skin. So that's probably a good approach for you, your candida diet is the one to really look at and focus on when it comes to Seb Derm. Plenty of information on this channel. Thanks for tuning in.

Dust mites feed off human skin cells and litter our carpets, upholstery, clothing and cuddly toys with faeces. Their faeces are so light that they float in the air when disturbed by our everyday activities. It is inhaling these minute particles that can cause allergic reactions and frustrating fits of sneezing. The good news is that Dyson is here to help. Dyson vacuums are designed to help keep your house clean and free of household dust, and more importantly, dust mites.
