Young people who take drugs including Prozac are ‘50% more likely to be convicted of assault, murder’. IT is feared popular antidepressant pills make young people violent. An Oxford University study found that men – and women – in their late teens and early 20s – were almost 50 per cent more likely to be convicted of offences from assault to murder when taking Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) drugs. This family of anti-depressants includes Prozac, as well as Seroxat, Lustral, Cipralex and Cipramil, the most commonly prescribed of the pills. One in eight Britons takes SSRIs each year – and the number of prescription has doubled in the last decade. The tablets already carry a warning that the drugs are linked to suicidal thoughts in young people and it was suspected they were also linked to violence but evidence was sparse until now. The researchers said the risk in 15 to 24 year olds is ‘not insignificant’ and that the public health implications ‘require careful consideration’. These include adding a warning to packets. Oxford psychiatrist Senna Faze used official records to analyse the behaviour of more than 800,000 Swedes aged 15-plus who had been prescribed SSRIs. Tracking them for four years allowed him to compare their behaviour when they were on the pills to when they were off them. SSRIs are already associated with a higher risk of suicide attempts in the young. Writing in the journal PLOS Medicine, the researchers said: “The adolescent brain may be particularly sensitive to pharmacological interference.” Other possible reasons include young people being less likely to take their pills, allowing hostility, impulsivity and other symptoms of depression to boil over into violence. The young people studied were more likely to get drunk when on antidepressants and it may be that the booze drove them to violence. It is also possible that they were more severely ill when they were given the drugs. Interestingly, only the youngsters taking low doses of SSRIs were more prone to violence. It isn’t known why this is but one possibility is that those taking high doses are so ill that they are effectively housebound. .

Common antidepressants have been linked to an increased risk of young people committing violent crimes. A Swedish study found that taking the drugs, known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs,) raised the likelihood of someone aged 15 to 24 being convicted for an act of violence by 43%. No significant association was seen between SSRI use and violent crime in people aged 25 and older. Previous research has found that children and young adults, but not older individuals, may be more prone to suicidal thoughts when taking the antidepressants. A number of legal cases have linked the drugs with violent behaviour, but until now research evidence has been inconclusive.

Giving children and young people pills for depression and anxiety is on the increase. An international study reveals a 54% increase. Therapy should always come first and even if medication is needed, therapy has to go alongside that. Yes, there is an horrendous waiting list for therapy intervention but don't go down the pill route. Giving children pills will only mask the root cause. Do not let your GP ram raid you not giving your child pills. Pills are not a short term fix while waiting for therapy.

More than 15 percent of reproductive-aged women have filled a prescription for an antidepressant medication during the years 2008–2013, according to a new analysis published today in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month and the CDC is working with the March of Dimes to raise awareness about the use of antidepressant medications by women of reproductive age, and what women should know and do for their own health and that of their babies. There is conflicting evidence about the potential link between some antidepressants and certain birth defects. Some commonly used antidepressants are sertraline (Zoloft), bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban), and citalopram (Celexa). Take the NAMI #StigmaFree Pledge: http://www.nami.org/stigmafree Despite the fact that effective treatment of depression is widely available – untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide in the United States. A study by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill found two-thirds of all people with a mental illness don’t get treatment, and refuse to go on antidepressants. And that’s partly because of the stigma of mental illness, but partly because the average person has a deep mistrust of anti-depressant medication. First of all, you’re trying to rewire the brain and restore brain chemistry, something that’s extremely complicated to do. Neuroscience – the study of the brain – is still one of the youngest sciences – and medical science still does not fully understand the underlying circuitry of the brain or how it works. What we do know about brains is that they are dauntingly complex – and each individual one is a careful balance of chemicals that affect your mood). Plus doctors have to choose a medication for you based mostly in a verbal, self-reported description. Imagine if an infection was the same: There’s the side effects, which can range from low blood pressure, nausea, to suicidal ideation-which goes against the whole idea of anti-depressants. Bad reactions are one reason why people go off their meds, rather than sticking with it and finding a dose that works. The mere fact that a drug is approved by the FDA shows its passed rigorous testing, meaning it has to be both safe AND effective. FDA has strict rules [links in the description] about the kinds of science it looks at – It has a whole organization, the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) just to make sure that the data from drug trials is accurate, and that all drugs are safe and effective for their intended use. According to the National Institute of Health, 80% of people treated for depression show an improvement in their general symptoms after 4-6 weeks. Now – I should note that with this data – the definition of treatment includes not only medication – but also psychotherapy, attending support groups or a combination of those – but this is some of the best data we have available. Everyone can help break the stigma of mental illness. I know changing the world is something we ScIQers want to do thats why you guys are fans of the channel and one thing you can do to make the world a better place for mental illness is to take a NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health) pledge to be Stigmafree. Bec and I took the pledge and it’s a good reminder of how we can work together to promote acceptance and challenge stereotypes. Jayde What do you guys think? Do you have any experiences with anti-depressants? Through yourself or someone you know? Did they work for you? We’d love for you guys to be generous in sharing your stories; because opening up the dialogue about depression is one of the first steps about making the world #Stigmafree. Sertraline is an antidepressant in the SSRI class. It’s used for depression, anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and a number of other conditions. After entering the market in the early 1990s, sertraline became one of the most popular antidepressants. The drug is used in adults, adolescents, and children. All credit goes to RTD for making this eye opening documentary! More films about America: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/usa/ The US has a highly developed pharmaceutical industry offering treatments for all kinds of mental disorders. Millions of Americans are being medicated for ailments as diverse as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and many others. Even young children are being put on psychiatric drugs. If parents decline such treatment, social services may intervene. Many patients, who’ve been taking these pills for years, insist that they do more harm than good. They have experienced disturbing side effects such as suicidal thoughts, addiction and even neurological damage. A lot of patients were put on their medication as children and by the time they were legally old enough to decide for themselves, they had already become addicted. They testify that breaking their dependency on the drugs is extremely difficult because, like any habit forming narcotic, they cause severe withdrawal symptoms. RTD meets some of the sufferers to hear their stories of battling to shake off prescribed medicines. Father of 5, Josh, was given anxiety medication, it caused Akathisia and Dystonia. Both are physical disorders causing involuntary and uncontrolled body movement and have left him disabled. Olivia’s son was prescribed psychiatric drugs to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD). Olivia soon noticed side effects and refused to continue giving him the pills. He was taken by social services and hospitalised. Denis from Russia used to work for a pharmaceutical company in the US but after meeting his wife, who had suffered from the side effects of antidepressants for most of her life, he started questioning the necessity for such widespread psychiatric prescribing. Their claims are supported by lawyers and medical professionals. Psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin is a vocal critic of psychiatric medication. He is adamant that the drugs are toxic and that many problems people talk to physiatrists about can be treated without resorting to drugs. International study has systematically compared the consumption of antidepressants among 0-19 year old children and young people in five Western countries: Denmark, England, Holland, Germany, and the United States over a period of seven years. The largest increases in consumption of prescribed antidepressants from 2005-2012 were observed in Denmark (60.5%), the UK (54.4%) and Germany (49.2%). Fluoxetine (Prozac) is the recommended treatment for depressed Children according to the guidance from the Health Protection Agency. Even so, it shows that Citalopram (Cipramil), is the most popular choice by doctors. Such off-label prescriptions is worrisome since knowledge of these drugs for efficacy and long-term side effects are unknown. Therefore, children on these antidepressants are at great risk of developing suicidal thoughts and aggression behavior. The results of the multinational study was published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology, march 2016. European Neuropsychopharmacology: "Trends and patterns of antidepressant use in children and adolescents from five western countries, 2005–2012" http://www.europeanneuropsychopharmacology.com/article/S0924-977X%2816%2900037-7/abstract University of Southern Denmark (Danish): "Stor stigning i børn og unges forbrug af antidepressiv medicin" http://www.sdu.dk/om_sdu/fakulteterne/sundhedsvidenskab/nyt_sund/stor_stigning_i_boern_og_unges_forbrug_af_antidepressiv_medicin Germany / Deutsche zeitung - Nordschleswiger: "Dänische Kinder: Mehr Psychopharmaka als in den USA" http://www.nordschleswiger.dk/news-details1/36/90627?newscatid=36&h=D%C3%A4nische-Kinder%3A-Mehr-Psychopharmaka-als-in-den-USA Copyright © O'Brixtor 2016

A new study published in the American Medical Association Journal, “Pediatrics,” is raising concerns about a possible link between autism and antidepressants. It finds pregnant women taking antidepressants in the second and third trimesters face nearly double the risk of delivering a child who will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Dr. Tara Narula joins “CBS This Morning" to discuss the findings.

When I find myself in fear mode, or angry, resentful, bitter or thinking/feeling crappy in any way, (and these days it seems easier and easier to enter into these less than empowering states) I use these negative feelings as a cue to step back into a watching, observer state. And what is usually being observed is that all feelings are linked to the endless, non-stop churning of the mental machinery, the robotic, automatic spewing of this mysterious "thing" called thought/feeling. Now, I understand the power and importance of thought/feeling. And I am not trying to marginalize it's power for construction and fulfillment. But thought/feeling can be like an unruly beast of burden. Sure it can do some good work, but when it goes into its habitual and automatic mode, (which is a function of its primary survival imperative; a good thing!) it is not operating in its owner's interest. Thus it is critical that when negative thoughts/feelings kick in, that we take a pause, and observe carefully the movement of thought/feeling as it arises and (as it inevitably must) falls. Separate yourself from this movement by watching. Observe closely its activity and realize that this robotic process has enthralled and enslaved you for your entire life. As you make this realization, a sense of power will come over you. You will, for at least a moment, feel a sense of a potential freedom and power, that has heretofore been completely unsuspected.
