Acute asthma exacerbations (asthma attacks) and even deaths are most likely to occur during early morning hours or from about 4 to 7 am during sleep. There are two lifestyle factors that dramatically increase chances of these problems at night. These are: - sleeping on the back (supine sleep) - and mouth breathing. The common approach to asthma is to use bronchodilator medication (such as Ventolin) that relaxes the smooth muscles of airways and dilates them allowing easier air flow. Bronchospasm can be reversed with avoidance of triggers or elimination of inflammation. Apart from using medication, 6 randomized controlled clinical trials showed that people with asthma can reduce or eliminate their symptoms of asthma and main bronchodilator medications by about 90% using breathing exercises to slow down breathing back to the medical norms. This method of alternative medicine is called the Buteyko breathing technique. It has rating from the British Thoracic Society showing much higher efficiency of this method for asthma than yoga, meditation, nutritional intervention, or any other tested complementary therapy, as we explained in 3D animation above. It could be really dry. You could be hit in the head and your nose could bleed. If you suspect any kind of head trauma you need to call a doctor right away. If the bleeding is thin or yellow colored you need to call someone right away. Call 911 and be seen right away. It could be head trauma. Something bigger and worse could be going on. If you don't suspect head trauma and it's a run of the mill nosebleed you want to pinch your nose. You're going to pinch with your thumb and your forefinger the soft part of your nose right here. You're going want to lean forward. I know the old wives tale is to lean back. If you're leaning back any blood will drain down your throat and can gag you and make you feel uncomfortable. You'll cough. It can irritate your nose even more. Lean forward and pinch. Pinch for a good ten minutes, and then let go and see what happens. If it's still bleeding go ahead and do the same thing. Pinch your nose and lean forward. Pinch and hold. You may want to look at a clock, because ten minutes seems like a very long time. Just wait it out. Pinch it and lean forward. If after two two times of ten minutes it's still going, if your nose is bleeding for more than thirty minutes, you really need to see somebody about that because something's going on. If you suspect that your nose has been broken, if it's misshapen, if it looks different than it did before, you're going to want to get it checked out to see if it is broken. Then the doctor can take care of that. Afterwards you can put ice to your nose and to your cheeks to help with the swelling and to help with the pain. You could take over the counter medicines to help. Stay away from aspirin, because that's a blood thinner and that can make the bleeding worse. If you start to notice other things going on, confusion, dizziness, slurred speech, people just not acting like themselves especially after a head trauma, after being hit in the head, then call your doctor. They are happy to help you. There is no question that's too little or too small. They are there to help because that's what they do.

Many breathing techniques can also reduce stress and relax your body. With all breathing exercises, inhale through your nose, and exhale through your mouth with your lips pursed. The first breathing exercise is very simple. Breath in through your nose for 2 seconds and breath out through your mouth with pursed lips for 4 seconds. Do this 10 times. Now you are going to move your arms with the breathing to loosen up the muscles around your chest area. Put your arms out in front of you and clasp your hands together. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and as you are breathing out through your mouth, twist your trunk, moving your arms side to side. Repeat this 5 times. Next is the "chicken wing" exercise. Place your hands on your shoulders, which will make you look like you have chicken wings. Take a deep breath in and make circles with your arms as you are breathing out. Repeat this 5 times. Breathing with your diaphragm, or belly breathing, is a great way to relax. Instead of your chest rising when you breath, you want your stomach to move in and out. To make sure you are doing this correctly, you can place your hands on your stomach with your fingers almost interlocking. When you breathe in and out, your fingers should get closer together and further apart. Do this 5 times. Finally is a technique that helps push out all your reserve oxygen and helps get your lungs stronger. You want to forcefully blow all your air out of your lungs. At the end, you will hold your breath and swallow or try to breathe back in without taking a breath. This will make a suction like feeling in the notch at your throat. Try to hold it as long as you can, but since you have pushed all the air out, it might not be for very long. When you take a breath in, it will make a suction like noise if you have done it right. Nasal Nitric Oxide Healthy breathing, which includes breathing through the nose, is vital to allow the body to utilise the gases nitric oxide and carbon dioxide, both of which play a role in opening the blood vessels. Christian Bohr demonstrated the importance of carbon dioxide in blood oxygenation back in 1904, but it was not until the 1980s that the incredible benefits of nitric oxide (NO) were fully understood. Until then, nitric oxide was considered a toxic gas, responsible for the environmental pollution and smog found in overpopulated cities. In 1987 a group of British researchers headed by pharmacologist and professor Sir Salvatore Moncado discovered that NO was responsible for relaxing the inner walls of the blood vessels – an effect called the endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF). They also found that L-arginine which is abundant in many types of food is the enzyme that leads to production of nitric oxide. Their findings, however, were not readily accepted by the general medical community which remained sceptical of the potential benefits of the gas, still believing it to be a source of pollution. In 1995 it was discovered that nitric oxide production takes place in the paranasal sinuses, a group of four air-filled spaces surrounding the nasal cavity. Global recognition of the true benefits of nitric oxide finally came in 1998 when professor of pharmacology Dr Louis Ignarro and colleagues Robert F Furchgott and Ferid Murad were awarded a Nobel Prize for their discovery of the role nitric oxide plays in the cardiovascular system. Everyone else, you're off the hook. - - - - - - - - MOUTH TAPING & Stuffed Noses Some points about the mouth taping to be careful. For the most part taping the mouth isn't dangerous unless you have a nasal obstruction. If you can't breathe with the tape on then you wouldn't fall asleep in the first place. However it is possible that in the middle of the night you could roll into some position that makes it hard to breathe through the nose, which should just cause you to roll over again or you'd just wake up. However, just in case: ■Make the tape easy to take off: You can pat the piece of tape on the back of your hand to remove some of the adhesive before putting it on. Fold it at both ends to make a tab you can pull on to take it off ■Don't tape your mouth after drinking alcohol (or drugs) and it's better not to wear it if you've eaten dinner soon before bed. Patrick McKeown recommends to finish dinner at least 2 hours before sleeping ■If it makes you anxious, try just wearing the tape while awake until you're comfortable with it. If you really don't like the idea of taping your mouth, you can get an anti-snoring chin strap instead which will keep your mouth closed. [Stuffed Nose] Patrick McKeown addresses this in the book, here's one of the nose unblocking techniques: -Sit in a chair -After a gentle exhalation, close your mouth and pinch your nostrils -Gently nod your head back and forth until you feel the urge to breathe. -Keep your mouth closed but attempt to gently inhale through the nose -Unless you simply cannot breathe through the nose at this point, continue to breathe lightly in and out through your nose. -If the nose is still stuffed, repeat the exercise. (Repeat up to 4 times in one sitting though)

This NCLEX pharmacology review question will test your nursing knowledge about how to properly administer a bronchodilator and corticosteroid metered-dose inhaler. To answer this question correctly, you must know the mechanism of action of both the bronchodilator (Albuterol) and corticosteroid (Fluticasone). What is Albuterol? It is a short-acting bronchodilator. A bronchodilator (just as its name says) opens the bronchi and bronchioles of the lungs. When this happens more air is able to flow through the lungs. This is vital for the patient who has asthma because they experience bronchoconstriction. What is a Fluticasone? It is a corticosteroid used to prevent symptoms in patients with asthma. It will work by decreasing inflammation in the small airways. To administer these medications, the bronchodilator will be administered FIRST and then 5 minutes later the corticosteroids will be administered. The bronchodilator will open the airway first so when the corticosteroids are inhaled they can do their job within the lungs. It is important to remember that AFTER administering inhaled corticosteroids, the patient must gargle and rinse the mouth with water and spit (or a spacer can be used). The reason for this is because corticosteroids can cause thrush. TECHNIQUE OF RESUSCITATION After the puppy is born and removed from the sack, gently wipe the nose with cotton. Force the haws open by pressing on the corners of the mouth and hinging the lower jaw open, then use a cotton swab to remove any fluids in the mouth. Next, tilt the puppy to an approximate 55 degree angle to the floor with the head DOWN. Hold the puppy with both hands, one hand over the shoulders and the other over the hindquarters. The method of holding the puppy is all-important. To explain further, I hold the forequarters in my right hand with the hard arched over the withers, the thumb on the shoulders and upper arm on one side, the index finger supporting the head and the middle finger holding the shoulder and upper arm on the other side. The hindquarters are held in the left hand with the hand arched over the rump, the thumb holding the thigh, the index finger curled down over the anal area and supporting the floor of the pelvis, and the middle finger firmly holding the other thigh. Pretend the puppy is an accordion. The hands on the fore- and hindquarters are holding the handles. STRETCH the puppy to its full length. WAIT two or three seconds for the lungs to fill with air. PUSH the puppy together to its shortest possible length. The air should be heard leaving the lungs and often fluid is seen coming out of the mouth and/or nose. Be sure to keep the puppy at the 55 degree angle with the head DOWN. Repeat the STRETCH – WAIT – PUSH sequence about 12 to 14 times per minute. The movements should be gentle but strong enough that the puppy is visibly lengthened in the stretch portion and visibly compressed and the ribs rounded up in the push portion. This is what it looks like when a cat has asthma. It looks like a cat trying to hack up a hair ball but no hair ball is ever produced. Our cat had it at an early age but his hacking episodes were not frequent in the beginning. The older he got, the more frequent his episodes became. He was hacking throughout the day and Vet tried X-Rays, blood tests and Hair Ball medicine. We went to the specialist and suggested to him also that it could possibly be feline asthma. The specialist wanted to conduct $3000 worth of tests which none of them included testing for asthma. We didn't do the expensive tests and he agreed to give us the inhaler. After a couple of treatments of the asthma inhaler, our cats asthma symptoms were gone. He stopped hacking immediately. We had to order the AeroKat which is a Feline Aerosol Chamber which allows you to administer the medicine (AeroKat.com). The medication is an inhaler called Fluticasone Propionate Ihalation IP 125 mcg/dose (Flohale Generic). We give him 2 to 3 puffs twice daily, 12 hours a part. The medicine we order is expensive in the United States so we have to order it from a Candian Pharmacy. We order from canadadrugsonline.com or call 877-900-3784 and get 6 months of medication for around $120. In the United States it would cost us about $80 a month. The AeroKat cost about $30 and we have been using the same one for 2 years now and it's still working great. I have learned a couple of things to help your cat with asthma attacks. 1st you can use Pine Liter which is dust free so your cat will have less Asthma Attacks. I believe this is the cause of most cast Asthma. Also cleaning under your beds and places where your cat goes. If you have a lot of dust under your beds then your cat will have more Asthma Attacks. Lung anatomy and physiology of gas exchange in the lung alveoli during respiration nursing lecture. This lecture details the anatomy of the lungs and how gas exchange in the lungs takes place between carbon dioxide and oxygen. The lung is made up of many components that participant in gas exchange. Inhaled air with oxygen enters into the upper respiratory system via the nose or mouth then through the nasal cavities, larynx, and trachea which splits at the carina into the right and left bronchus (primary bronchi). The primary bronchi and pulmonary vein and artery enter into the lungs at the hilum. The pulmonary artery delivers unoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the pulmonary vein delivers oxygenated blood back to the heart. The primary bronchi branches off into the lobar bronchi (also called secondary bronchi) then into the segmental bronchi (also called tetiary bronchi), and then into even smaller areas such as the bronchioles. The bronchioles connect to the alveolar sacs via the alveolar ducts. Gas exchange occurs in the alveolar sac within the alveoli. The alveoli sacs contain capillaries that help with transporting carbon dioxide and oxygen in and out of the body. The pulmonary artery brings unoxygenated blood through the capillary and carbon dioxide transports across the thin capillary wall and is transported out of the body through exhalation. Then the inhaled oxygen transports across the capillary wall onto the red blood cells which is taken via the pulmonary vein back to the heart to replenish the body with fresh oxygenated blood. Other facts about lung anatomy: the right lung has three lobes while the left lung has two lobes. The lung is made up of two layers: visceral pleura (surrounds the lungs) and parietal pleura (attaches to the thoracic cavity). In between these layers, is a small space of fluid that allows the lungs to glide on each other during inhalation and exhalation.
