New Drug Gives Hope to Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

Rheumatoid Arthritis often starts during the prime of a person's working life, typically between the age of 35 and 45. Women are 3 times more likely to develop the disease than men. It is an incurable, painful and debilitating auto-immune disease where the body attacks itself, most noticeably in the joints. Methotrexate (MTX) is the current drug prescribed for patients with RA in the UK but if this treatment is not working, patients may also be given a biological drug to help control their disease. However, of the estimated 46,000 RA patients on a biological treatment, 1 in 3 are not taking methotrexate, often because they are intolerant to this treatment. The other most widely prescribed drug is Humira. However a pioneering study has shown fantastic results, among 326 patients, at five trial centres in the UK, which has shown that almost four times as many RA patients achieve complete disease remission taking RoActemra in comparison to Humira for patients who cannot take Methotrexate. Professor Cem Gabey talks about the results of RoActemra. The good news is that at £9,500 per patient per year, RoActemra costs about the same as Humira and The NHS cost-effectiveness watchdog Nice has already approved of RoActemra when combined with methotrexate. Firstly RA patients must not do exercises in the beginning at the first place itself. They must follow the video "Rheumatoid Arthritis can be cured in 7 days" and do the prayogas (VayuMudra/Lahsun Prayog/Pranaayam) initially and post that they should slowly start performing these mentioned RA exercises. Because the bones of RA patients are not that strong and hence one must be in good position to start exercises efficiently. Exercise 1 - Sit with your legs stretched straight and then bind your hands & starts rotating in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hand-arthritis You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh. Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles. Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth. Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement. For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty. There are many essential oils that can be used to reduce the pain, inflammation and stiffness that is experienced in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Oils like clove and Cyprus can be used as a combination to massage everyday on the joints which are painful or within which you are experiencing more arthritis to bring down the pain and swelling. Also some other oils like eucalyptus, wintergreen, peppermint, cypress, marjoram, frankincense etc can be used as essential oil blend for regular use before bath to bring down the pain and swelling. There are many options in massages in rheumatoid arthritis in ayurveda. In ayurveda we do a massage which can be done dry or preceded by an oil massage which soothes rheumatoid arthritis. They are called as pathra panda sweda. Patra basically means herbs. So leaves of herbs which have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties are used as a bolus tied in a cloth and used for massages over the joints which are painful and swollen in rheumatoid arthritis. Pathra panda sweda over a period of time in repeated sessions, say 8 sessions every month does help bring down pain considerably in rheumatoid arthritis. If done regularly it can also reduce the stricture of joints or contractures of joints which are commonly experienced by people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Certain other dry massages or dry fermentations also help for example istika sweda which is done by using bricks, then, valuka sweda, which is done by using hot sand also helps in bringing down pain, inflammation as well as pain in rheumatoid arthritis and can be taken successfully in succession. A diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis does not mean you can't live a healthy and normal life. These 10 tips for living well will help you cope with the disease while thriving in your daily activities. 1. Take Charge: Keep an open dialogue with your doctor and family or friends who are helping you to ensure that your needs are heard. 2. Take Care of Yourself: Get plenty of rest and keep a healthy diet. The Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish are great for RA patients. Check with your doctor before beginning an Omega 3 regimen. 3. Get Exercise: Exercising regularly can help to reduce the pain and swelling associated with RA. Start gradually by stretching, then eventually add strength training and aerobic exercise. Avoid high-intensity exercises such as running or downhill skiing. Always talk to your doctor about starting a new exercise regimen. 4. Monitor the Temperature: Cold, damp weather amplifies symptoms in many RA patients. It's important to adjust your thermostat to a comfortable, warmer temperature when the weather outside is cool. On very hot days, be sure to drink plenty of cold water and non-caffeinated beverages before you get thirsty. 5. Quit Smoking: Smoking greatly increases the inflammatory process in the body. As RA causes inflammation in many parts of the body, you do not want to intensify symptoms of swelling with smoking. The #1 cause of premature death for those with RA is heart attacks, which are more likely to occur in smokers. 6. Seek the Sun: Try to get 5-10 minutes of sunlight at least 3 times a week. Vitamin D from sunlight can fight against pain, swelling, and flu-like symptoms of RA. 7. Relax: Take a break when you begin to feel stressed, as stress can aggravate your RA. A glass of water, short walk to stretch your legs, breathing techniques, and practicing Tai Chi can be helpful in stressful situations. 8. Sit Up Straight: Posture training, such as the Alexander Technique, can greatly reduce strain on your joints and muscles to help avoid injury from excessive slouching. 9. Soothe Your Pain with Cold or Heat: Ice packs and heating pads on achy joints and muscles can help alleviate symptoms of pain. 10. Make Sure Your Immunizations are Up to Date: RA patients need to have all of their vaccines, especially flu shots, to avoid illness. The nature of RA and medications such as DMARDs reduce immunity, leaving patients with a higher susceptibility to infections. 11. Do What You Can: Lastly, do what you can. While RA may deter you from traveling over an extended period of time, try to get out as much as possible and enjoy what life has to offer in close proximity to you.
