Oral cancers can occur in any part of the oral cavity. This could include the lips, the tongue, the throat, the pharynx, the larynx, salivary glands or even the maxillary sinuses. Now early detection is mandatory for a favourable prognosis, now for this, there are certain signs and symptoms which we need to look out for. One, we should look out for any signs of red or white lesions in the oral cavity. Next we look out for sores, any swelling, patches, elevated patches in any part of the oral cavity. For throat cancer you can also look at an inability to swallow, or like say an object is stuck in your throat. There maybe a numbness, or tingling sensation, or there could be tenderness in any part of the oral cavity. In later stages there could be inability to chew, swallow, speech also could be hampered. Those cancers which are related more to the tooth, here you may find that your teeth maybe mobile. There is no periodontal disease involvement in this.

Any type of cancer that has to do with the mouth, throat, gums or tongue is called Oral cancer. Usually, people who smoke are at a bigger risk of being afflicted by this disease. However, people who do not smoke can be diagnosed with mouth or throat cancer. About 50,000 Americans diagnosed with mouth cancer every year. This is a huge number; therefore, the awareness level concerning this disease should also be there. Commonly people experience lumps, sores or pain. However, there are other reasons too why people ignore the symptoms of oral cancer. Like any other type of cancer, if caught early, this is treatable.

http://houstondental.com/oral-cancer-screenings/ HPV The Most Common Cause Of Oral Cancer HPV And Oral Cancer: The Deadly Link HPV and Oral Cancer have a longstanding relationship: one has been confirmed as a direct factor towards another. The human papillomavirus, or better known as HPV, plays a large factor in raising the risk of contracting oral cancer. HPV is contracted by having practicing unsafe oral sex, as well as other methods that can heighten the risk of the disease. However, it has been discovered that poor oral health has actually been linked as a risk factor to HPV. Proper oral health is imperative to deter various oral diseases, such as periodontitis or teeth decay; which in itself can be traced as a source of the HPV and Oral Cancer connection. HPV and Oral Cancer: Connecting the Dots HPV and Oral Cancer share a common source: poor oral health. By not practicing proper oral health, the mouth becomes more susceptible to more complications that may eventually lead to the most harmful of oral diseases: oral cancer. A study was performed that placed individuals with different standings of oral health into a controlled environment. Those with gum disease showed a 58% higher risk of oral HPV infection when compared to others. This information confirms that poor oral health can truthfully be considered the catalyst of many oral diseases that can affect your health, if not fatal in themselves. Oral HPV infection causes 40-80% of oral cancer cases, and is seen as the deadliest link to this potentially fatal disease. Not only is it imperative to practice safe oral sex, but it is doubly important to maintain proper dental health and maintain consistent dental checkups with your family dentist. Oral health affects the body in more ways than one, and because of this it is ever important to keep yourself in optimal dental health. My website: www.wakeyourhealthup.com Book released soon! I will show you pictures of my tongue cancer. Tongue cancer images of a young non-smoker, non-drinker are not easy to find online, so here you go. This is a photo album which acts as a timeline starting from my cancer diagnosis Halloween 2011 until my recovery one year later 2013. The most important thing is to diagnose EARLY and you will have a successful journey getting it removed and living life again! For more tips on self-screening, check out my friends site: ww.sixstepscreening.org/oral-cancer/ Understanding the causative factors of cancer will contribute to prevention of the disease. Age is frequently named as a risk factor for oral cancer, as historically it occurs in those over the age of 40. The age of diagnosed patients may indicate a time component in the biochemical or biophysical processes of aging cells that allows malignant transformation, or perhaps, immune system competence diminishes with age. Very recent data (late 2008-2011) lead us to believe that the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population are non-smokers under the age of fifty, which would indicate a paradigm shift in the cause of the disease, and in the locations where it most frequently occurs in the oral environment. The anterior of the mouth, tobacco and alcohol associated cancers have declined along with a corresponding decline in smoking, and posterior of the oral cavity sites associated with the HPV16 viral cause are increasing. However, it is likely that the accumulative damage from other factors, such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and persistent viral infections such as HPV, are the real culprits. It may take several decades of smoking for instance, to precipitate the development of a cancer. Having said that, tobacco use in all its forms is number one on the list of risk factors in individuals over 50. Historically at least 75% of those diagnosed at 50 and older have been tobacco users. This percentage is now changing, and exact percentages are yet to be definitively determined and published, as new data related to viral causes are changing the demographics very rapidly. When you combine tobacco with heavy use of alcohol, your risk is significantly increased, as the two act synergistically. Those who both smoke and drink, have a 15 times greater risk of developing oral cancer than others. More about tobacco and alcohol It does not appear that the HPV16 viral cause acts synergistically with tobacco or alcohol, and HPV16 represents a completely unique and independent disease process. Early detection is critical in treating any type of cancer, particularly when it’s mouth cancer. Health experts say, where the cancer is found determines the type of treatment. Kevin Owen was diagnosed with a rare form of tongue cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. “I thought it was just a scar on the side of my tongue and it ended up being a carcinoma. I was shocked. I was scared.” Dr. Anthony Anfuso, a head and neck cancer surgeon on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says tongue cancer can be found in two locations: on the front of the tongue, or at the base of the tongue where it’s difficult to see. “If you have cancer on the oral tongue that is going to be treated almost always with surgery. If you have it at the base of the tongue that would be a non-surgical treatment.” Regardless of where the cancer is found health experts say the two most common causes for the cancer are smoking or chewing tobacco or, like in Kevin’s case, a lesion on the tongue that won’t heal. “I had bit my tongue a number of times and I thought it was just a scar from biting my tongue, but then it started becoming circular and it started looking a little different,” said Kevin. A week after being diagnosed, Kevin underwent surgery to have the cancer removed. “If you catch a tongue cancer when it’s a small lesion and there are no involved lymph nodes you can surgically remove it and the lymph nodes. The prognosis is excellent. Well above 90 percent,” said Dr. Anfuso. Fortunately for Kevin, the cancer was caught and removed early. Health experts say patients who undergo surgery typically have a quick recovery where they are able to eat, drink, and talk normally within a few days. A patient with patient identification number 29781 visited Life Force for his treatment with oral cancer. He willingly explained that not only tobacco or jarda but the simple variety of pan parag can also cause oral cancer. He ate pan parag for almost fifteen to twenty years which caused him mouth cancer. He explains that one variety gutkha which is mixed with tobacco and other is pan parag after consuming this one may get sub mucous fibrosis where one may not be able to open their mouth. Later it leads to formation of white patches with formation of ulcers and later cancer. Mr. Sharma deeply studied about oral cancer and came to the conclusion that it can also be caused due to pan parag. He searched for the treatment on the internet and got to know about Dr. Shah’s treatment in oral cancer and visited for his treatment. He explained that one may get an ulcer on eating irritating things like salt which may lead to formation of ulcer. One may apply ointment to get rid of it. But if it stays for more than three months it may turn into cancer. The first stage is called as sub mucus fibrosis, second stage is leucoplakia (white patches) and third stage is cancer. He represents the changing face of oral cancer: Michael Tartaro was diagnosed two years ago with stage 4 disease, with tumors in the base of his tongue. “And luckily it was diagnosed and we started treatment almost immediately,” says Tartaro. His treatment consisted of radiation and chemo. It destroyed the cancer but was far less traumatic than in years past. “The chemotherapy was pretty good. They’ve come a long way now so if people are worried about it they shouldn’t. I mean they have drugs now you don’t even get nauseous,” says Tartaro. “If you go back 20 years or so, prior to that time, we were doing much more surgery then we are today. Routinely now we save the surgery as a salvage type procedure. In other words, if they go through the chemotherapy and radiation don't get a cure then we can usually go in and do the surgery,” says Dr. Phillip Andrews, who is an otolaryngologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. With a new approach to treatment, today’s oral cancer patients face better outcomes; both in surviving and thriving. Survival rates have steadily improved since 1975. And people are coming through with fewer long-term complications. “Most people who go through combined therapy - which is radiation and chemotherapy - most of those people in six months to a year at their routine follow up, they will tell me I never felt better in my life,” says Dr. Andrews. Improved outcomes are based on several things: more people are getting screened. Cancer is diagnosed earlier, treatment options are improved and more patients have access to swallowing specialists. “Initiate therapy at the early onset of somebody needing therapy. Also be able to monitor them throughout the course of their chemo and radiation,” says Stacey Brill, who is a speech pathologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Michael still works on his chewing and swallowing. But is voicing no complaints. “The tumors have completely gone, the doctor can’t find them. So I’m happy,” says Tartaro. Here is some more information about Oral Cancer from Wikipedia: "Oral cancer or mouth cancer, a subtype of head and neck cancer, is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. It may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the oral tissues, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighboring anatomic structure, such as the nasal cavity. Alternatively, the oral cancers may originate in any of the tissues of the mouth, and may be of varied histologic types: teratoma, adenocarcinoma derived from a major or minor salivary gland, lymphoma from tonsillar or other lymphoid tissue, or melanoma from the pigment-producing cells of the oral mucosa. There are several types of oral cancers, but around 90% are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the tissues that line the mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), lips, or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the microscope and are called squamous cell carcinoma, but less commonly other types of oral cancer occur, such as Kaposi's sarcoma." http:www.ModestoNews.org All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2014
