Pancreatic Cancer: A Beautiful Story of Survival

24:08
When patients diagnosed with cancer are admitted to the hospital, many times we see them at their lowest. From chemotherapy and radiation treatments to surgeries and diagnostic test. It can be an emotional roller coster for not only the patient but also all of their loved ones… including their medical staff… I remember about 2 months ago, I was feeling down. Normally I’m an extremely upbeat person. However, working on the oncology unit was taking it’s tole on me. I realized, that I was mistakingly focusing on some of the patients who didn’t make it. Unfortunately, many of the patients who recover fully do not make their ways back in the the hospital. I can’t blame, the hospital would not be high on my list also. Recently, I attended a fundraising event with my husband and I heard a beautiful dynamic speaker by the name of Camille. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually cried while she was talking… By the time she finished speaking, I knew I had to ask her to share her story on my channel. I waited for 2 hours to talk with her and after the crowds had died down, she graciously accepted my offer. Spending time with Camille was like taking a breath of fresh air. Imagine walking into someones home for an interview and a bubbly 60 year old greets you with tons of energy, gorgeous hair and a wholesome outlook and love for life. This is who Camlile is, just a loving bundle of joy - I left her house inspired and grateful. I hope you feel the same way after listening to her story. Camille was given one of the worst diagnosis… Had I been reading her chart, I unfortunately would have not spent too much time with it… I have never met anyone that survived Pancreatic Cancer, much less; Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with metastasis aka METS. The first doctor she went to told her that she that with stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with spots on in her lungs, liver and kidneys; there was nothing they could do and she was to go home and prepare to die. However, one thing that she strongly recommends is to get a second opinion, which is what she did. She went to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer center. She found a doctor that believed in her and she trusted him. She will be the first to tell you that her story is not the norm and oftentimes told me how it hurts her to know that many others have had the same diagnosis and not the same outcome. However, her main focus is to share that no matter how bad things seem, you can always and MUST always have hope. Thankfully Camille is not alone these days. Thanks to advanced research and better treatment options. The bike ride event that Camille and I speak about in the video is a Fundraising event. Events like these help organizations raise money to continue research and be positioned to deliver specialized treatment options. Each persons cancer is different and events like these help us do a small part to help ensure much needed progress. I hope you decide to join us. Please read bike ride information below and email me with any questions: Caroline@EmpoweRN.com See you soon! xoxo ~Caroline Fundraising Bike Ride Information: Please join Camille and I February , 11th 2017 for the fundraising bike ride. If you click on the link below scroll down to a button that says “Join My Team.” After you click on the button, you will be taken to another page that gives you multiple options on different fundraising activities. Camille and I will be doing the 14 mile bike ride. Don’t worry, it is not a race and as long as you have a decent bike you probably do not have to prepare much for it. At least I didn’t lol. The minimum fundraising donation for the bike ride is $250 - however you can reserve your spot for $150 and raise the rest later if you would like. All proceeds will be donated to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer which is South Florida's leader in cancer diagnosis and provides state-of-the-art treatment as well as follow-up care. They also have an advanced research department, which is vital to discovering better treatment options, which in turn will help us save lives. Here is what I did: I purchased the $150 bike ride fee. Then, I purchased two of the $50 Counting Crows concert tickets. I went last year and it was a lot of fun, so I think it is worth the money anyways. Then, just to start my page I paid an additional $10, this is not necessary though. Since I did this last year I know how much fun it is going to be, so I hope you decide to join Camille and I! https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/team-hurricanes-hurricane-camille By the way, if you only want to donate… every single dollar helps! No donation is too small. Thank you for watching and thank you Camille for sharing your beautiful energy and message of hope to us all. Happy Holidays, ~Caroline

Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer

06:08
Early Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer Diabetes, especially if it comes on suddenly. Recently, the Mayo Clinic published startling research showing that 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients had been diagnosed with diabetes one to two years before discovering they had a pancreatic tumor. Researchers believe the diabetes is caused by tumors that simply haven't been detected yet. The problem is, diabetes is very common, and the majority of diabetes isn't pancreatic cancer, so doctors are trying to develop screening tools to tell the difference. Right now, they say family history is an important clue. If you're diagnosed with diabetes that seems to come on suddenly and you have no family history of diabetes, bring this to your doctor's attention and ask for further screening for pancreatic cancer. Yellowing of the eyes or skin. Even a small pancreatic tumor can block the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, causing bile to build up. This causes jaundice. Itchy skin, palms, and soles of feet. A little-known side-effect of jaundice is itchy hands and feet. It's due to a skin reaction to the bilirubin, the yellowish brown liver chemical that causes jaundice. Lack of appetite. An Italian study found that six to eight months before being diagnosed with pancreatic tumors, patients reported a sudden drop in their appetite and a tendency to feel full after eating very little. Changes in taste. In the same Italian study, some of the patients surveyed said they'd suddenly lost their taste for coffee, wine, and smoking. In fact, they said, they felt "disgust" for the smell and taste of coffee and alcohol. Abdominal pain. Pancreatic cancer sufferers remember this pain as a gnawing pain, rather than a sharp cramp or ache, and it radiates toward the back. A characteristic clue: the pain goes away when you lean forward. An enlarged gall bladder. The same blockage of the bile duct that causes jaundice can also cause an enlarged gallbladder, as the bile builds up behind the duct. The good news is that an enlarged gallbladder can be seen on imaging tests, and it may even be possible for a doctor to feel it during a physical exam. Pale, floating, smelly stools. If a pancreatic tumor prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the intestine, the result is an inability to digest fatty foods. So you end up with loose, smelly "floaters" as a result of the excess fat. Doctors say this symptom, in particular, can be an early clue and is too often overlooked. Dark, tarry stools. Bleeding in the upper intestines causes this symptom. Sudden, unexplained weight loss. Weight loss is not always, as many people mistakenly believe, a sign of advanced cancer that's spread to the liver. It can also happen because a lack of pancreatic enzymes is causing fat to pass through the body undigested. New videos everyday! Liver Cancer Survival Rates

Related: Liver Cancer Early Warning Signs https://youtu.be/muI6Huqv_60 Liver Cancer Stages https://youtu.be/Xivxjd5R-vs Liver Cancer Survival Rates Liver cancer survival rates are estimates that vary based on a number of factors which are specific to each individual patient. Patients are assiged a stage by their doctor that describes how much the cancer has spread beyond the liver. The more the the cancer has spread, the higher the stage and the lower the survival rate. Survival rates for these stages are traditionally given as the percentage of patients who live at least 5 years after their diagnosis. Here are the 5-year survival rates for liver cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, based on studies done between 2005-2011. 31 Percent For people whose cancer is "localized," that is, has not spread outside the liver, the 5-year survival rate is about one in three. Localized means the cancer is still confined to the liver, and includes stages I, II, and some stage III cancers. This encompasses a wide range of cancers, some of which are easier to treat than others. 11 Percent The 5-year survival rate for "regional" liver cancer is about one in ten. Regional means the cancer has grown into nearby organs or has spread to nearby lymph nodes. This typically happens in stages IIIC and IVA. 3 Percent If liver cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is about 1 in 33. Distant means that the cancer has spread to distant organs or tissues and is the same as stage IVB. The overall 5-year survival is better than 50 percent in patients with "resectable" tumors -- that is, tumors that can be completely removed. These patients are likely to do well if their tumors are removed when they're not suffering from cirrhosis or other serious health problems. At the present time, those who have early-stage liver cancers and get a liver transplant have a 5-year survival rate is in the range of 60% to 70%. Of course, the 5-year survival rate for liver cancer tends to be better if the cancer is found and treated at an earlier stage. The purpose of this video has been to provide quick, basic information on liver cancer survival rates. To learn more about liver cancer and related topics, in greater depth, click on the links below the video screen. And remember, you should rely only on advice from a medical professional in any matter related to your health.

My survival story -- what I learned from having cancer | Martin Inderbitzin | TEDxZurich

19:18
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Martin Inderbitzin was 32 years old, with a fresh PhD degree, a new job and about to start a new life when he was suddenly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had to go through surgery and endure nine months of radiochemotherapy. While coping with his new situation and challenging his many fears he realized how important his own state of mind was. In the middle of his treatment, when he was barely able to walk, he decided to sign up for a triathlon, despite never having seriously practiced endurance sports before. Today, he says this was one of the most important decisions of his life. With this new goal in mind he quickly realized the positive effect it had on his mental and physiological state. He tried to figure out how to‚train‘, while still being under treatment. After he had left the hospital his energy slowly returned and his training became more serious. Three months after the end of his treatment, Martin crossed the finish line of his first triathlon. Today, Martin is an enthusiastic Amateur-Triathlete, competing regularly in races around the globe. During his time as a patient Martin was inspired by stories from other patients who had lived through the same hassle. While crossing the finish line of his first race he realized that he himself had become an inspiration for other patients. This life changing moment gave Martin the idea to start his initiative: to collect and document cancer survival stories in the form of short videos and make them available to other patients and their families on an online platform. Martin Inderbitzin studied biology at the ETH Zurich and did his PhD in Neuroscience at UPF Barcelona with a special focus on artificial emotions and human computer interaction. After his studies in Spain he moved back to his home town Zurich and started to work as an interaction designer. In 2012 his dreams of a successful career were destroyed by a cancer diagnosis. While in treatment he decided to become a triathlete despite never having practiced this sport before. Since he left the hospital in 2013 he has completed multiple races and is enjoying his health again. Pancreatic Cancer | How to Diagnose Pancreatic Cancer-Healthy Wealthy

How to Diagnose Pancreatic Cancer Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive type of cancer with a poor prognosis that spreads quickly and causes a lot of pain in its later stages — the gland's digestive enzymes spill into surrounding tissues and destroy them. However, in the early stages, pancreatic cancer can cause few (if any) symptoms, so it's difficult to diagnose, which is why it's so deadly. Early diagnosis is important because there are more treatment options available. Related Videos: Pancreatic Cancer https://youtu.be/pbskOHAXpJg Signs Of Pancreatic Cancer https://youtu.be/Vdp1zb7QKsU Transcript: Stages Of Pancreatic Cancer I learned more than I ever really wanted to about the stages of pancreatic cancer recently when a friend was diagnosed. I did a lot of reading and research when that happened, using only reputable and reliable websites like those on your screen, and I'll share that information in the next minute or so. This video focuses only on the stages of pancreatic cancer. I've produced several other videos on related topics. You'll find links below. Once a diagnosis has been made, the doctor assigns a stage to each patient. Stage I Cancer is confined to the pancreas and can be removed using surgery. Stage II Cancer has spread beyond the pancreas to nearby tissues and organs and may have spread to the lymph nodes. At this stage, surgery may be possible to remove the cancer. Stage III Cancer has spread beyond the pancreas to the major blood vessels around the pancreas and may have spread to the lymph nodes. Surgery may or may not be possible to remove the cancer at this stage. Stage IV. Cancer has spread to distant sites beyond the pancreas, such as the liver, lungs and the lining that surrounds your abdominal organs (peritoneum). Surgery isn't an option at this stage in the disease. Naturally, the earlier the stage, the better the possibility of successful treatment. I hope this video has given you the basics you were looking for. But remember, you should only rely on a medical professional for the most up-to-date information about pancreatic cancer or any other issue related to your health.

6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking

05:38
Descriptions of Warning symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer: 6 Warning Signs and Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer, No 5 is Shocking It accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the United States, but 7 percent of cancer deaths. Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas, a pear-shaped organn located behind the lower part of your stomach Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early and it typically spreads rapidly, affecting other parts of the body. This is why it is called a silent disease and you must get cancer pancreas treatment. Here are the top 6 early warning signs of pancreatic cancer that you must know. 1, Jaundice. It is common for people with pancreatic cancer to experience jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the eyes or skin. Jaundice can also cause itchiness on the hands and feet, especially the palms and soles. Any size of tumor located in the head of the pancreas can lead to irregular bile (a yellowish-brown fluid released by your liver to aid digestion) flowing from the gallbladder into the small intestine. This causes excess buildup of bilirubin in the blood, one of the main causes of jaundice. 2, Abdominal and Lower Back Pain. Abdominal as well as back pain are also common symptoms in patients with pancreatic cancer. Usually, the sharp pain is felt in the upper abdomen, which gradually radiates toward the back. Many patients also report the pain is more severe at night and that they get slight relief from the pain by bending forward. If you are experiencing persistent, mild to moderate abdominal pain, consult a doctor or pancreatic cancer clinical trials. Most cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed in patients visiting the emergency room complaining of severe abdominal pain. 3, Nausea and Vomiting. Nausea followed by vomiting is another sign of pancreatic cancer. As the tumor grows, it can block some portions of the digestive tract, which hampers the overall digestion process. Along with nausea and vomiting, you may also experience heartburn and acid reflux. If these symptoms tend to worsen after eating and it is becoming difficult for you to eat anything without throwing up, consult your doctor and get best pancreatic cancer treatment. In advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, surgery may be required to bypass the blockage and improve digestion. 4, Unexplained Weight Loss. Unexplained weight loss is another noticeable warning sign of different types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer. Weight loss often occurs when a tumor spreads to nearby organns and impairs their functioning. This affects proper digestion of nutrients and also leads to poor appetite. Also, due to lack of pancreatic enzymes aiding digestion, dietary fats start passing through the body undigested, which in turn causes weight loss. Furthermore, the cancer cells compete with healthy cells for nutrients you must find a pancreatic cancer therapy. 5, Greasy or Light-Colored Stool. Stools of people suffering from pancreatic cancer have some distinct characteristics. The stools may become large, pale, oily, floating and smelly as the growing tumor prevents the pancreas from releasing its digestive enzymes. As the color and consistency of your stool says a lot about your health, any kind of bowell changes should be reported to your doctor. 6, Changes in urinee Color. Along with changes in your stools, you may also notice changes in your urinee color, despite drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Your urinee may become darker and take on an orange, amber or brown shade. A growing pancreatic tumor can cause bile to get blocked and not released from your body in the way that it should be. Too much bilirubin in the body can get into your urinee and make it dark in appearance. At times, there also may be traces of blood in your urinee. This video is an informative animated presentation that explains in detail about pancreatic cancer . This is a disease that begins in one of your digestive organs, the pancreas and starts as mutations of pancreatic cells, causing them to grow very quickly and uncontrollably. The mutated cells will often clump together to form tumors which can interfere with the normal pancreas function. Your doctor will recommend treatment based on the type of cell involved, location and stage of your cancer. Treatment may include radiation, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or a combination of treatments. There are three options to treat ; during a whipple procedure, also called a pancreatoduodenectomy your surgeon will remove the head of your pancreas, your gall bladder and portions of your common bile duct, small intestines and stomach. The remaining structures will be arranged in such a way to allow continued digestion. Watch the video to know more in detail. Manipal Hospitals is a leading healthcare brand in India. For an additional dose of inspiration and hope, be sure to watch the survivor stories of many others here: http://bit.ly/cancer-survivor-story-yt. Susie Lemieux’s life changed forever in November of 2014 when her husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer... When her husband was diagnosed, Susie left her job and became his full-time caregiver. He lived 11 months. And it was only 3 months after the doctors declared him “cancer free” that he died. In deep grief, Susie struggled through. The memories of her husband withering away before her eyes were still vivid. Five months later, she started to experience symptoms and her doctor ordered a CAT scan. That’s when they found that she, too, had pancreatic cancer. Putting together a medical team and moving to stay with her daughter in California, Susie worked hard to “wage hope” during this difficult time. She followed her doctor’s recommended pancreatic cancer treatment: chemotherapy and radiation. Tune in until the end to hear how she then uncovered a wealth of knowledge and empowerment that she could use to get healthy again - and why she attributes this to The Truth About Cancer. Plus, learn what diet changed the direction of her health entirely. She even created her own healing protocol based on what she learned from TTAC! New Study Shows IRE Treatment Significantly Improves Remission Rates for Pancreatic Cancer

05:33
Doctor with Survivor Discusses Her Battle Against Advanced Pancreatic Cancer and Amazing Long-Term Remission It’s well known that pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers, making a diagnosis a virtual death sentence. In fact, it’s estimated that 94% of pancreatic cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis, and 74% of patients die within the first year. Given its deadly nature and the fact that it’s anticipated to move from the #4 leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US to #2 by 2020, finding additional treatment options for advanced pancreatic cancer is critical. Now a study led by the University of Louisville’s James Graham Brown Cancer Center in collaboration with other leading US centers, called Soft Tissue Ablation Registry or STAR, is showing great promise for people with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The data provides additional evidence that irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation has the potential to augment the current treatment model and change the standard of care for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The NanoKnife® IRE system is a tool that destroys cancerous cells by subjecting them to a series of short electrical pulses using high-voltage direct current that does not injure surrounding cells, blood vessels or other vital structures. Diagnosed at forty-three years old, with two young boys in kindergarten and second grade, Elise Tedeschi, is available to discuss her personal battle with pancreatic cancer. Given just 9 months to live, she is now more than two and a half years in remission and thriving. Joining her is leading oncology surgeon, Dr. Robert Martin. Together they bring both a professional and personal, real-world view to what this new surgical technology could potentially do for those faced with a diagnosis of locally advanced pancreatic cancer. They also want to encourage patients be advocates about their healthcare and explore all options available to them. ABOUT: Robert Martin, M.D., Ph.D.: Dr. Martin has devoted most of his career to cancer treatment and care. He is the Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology, faculty member, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville, James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Kentucky. He received his M.D. from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, his surgical oncology training and hepato-pancreatico-biliary training from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxiciology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. About STAR: The Soft Tissue Ablation Registry (STAR) is a retrospective analysis of Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) performed on 200 locally advanced pancreatic cancer patients at six medical centers in the US. This interview is provided by the University of Louisville The study was conducted at the University of Louisville, Cleveland Clinic, Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta, the Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit, Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and Swedish Medical Center in Denver.
