Baroreflex is a rapid negative feedback loop in which an elevated blood pressure causes heart rate and blood pressure to decrease. Reversely, a decrease in blood pressure leads to an increased heart rate, returning blood pressure to normal levels. The reflex starts with specialized neurons called baroreceptors. These are stretch receptors located in the wall of the aortic arch and carotid sinus. Increased blood pressure stretches the wall of the aorta and carotid arteries causing baroreceptors to fire action potentials at a higher than normal rate. These increased activities are sent via the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius – the NTS - in the brainstem. In response to increased baroreceptor impulses, the NTS activates the parasympathetic system – the PSNS - and inhibits the sympathetic system – the SNS. As the PSNS and SNS have opposing effects on blood pressures, PSNS activation and SNS inhibition work together in the same direction to maximize blood pressure reduction. Parasympathetic stimulation decreases heart rate by releasing acetylcholine which acts on the pacemaker cells of the SA node. Inhibition of the sympathetic division decreases heart rate, stroke volume and at the same time causes vasodilation of blood vessels. When a person has a sudden drop in blood pressure, for example when standing up, the decreased blood pressure is sensed by baroreceptors as a decrease in tension. What does make a big difference is lowering sugar in your diet and more specifically, “high fructose corn syrup” In a recent study in the journal Open Heart (2), the authors write: “Evidence from epidemiological studies and experimental trials in animals and humans suggests that added sugars, particularly fructose, may increase blood pressure and blood pressure variability, increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand, and contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance and broader metabolic dysfunction. Thus, while there is no argument that recommendations to reduce consumption of processed foods are highly appropriate and advisable, the arguments in this review are that the benefits of such recommendations have less to do with sodium—minimally related to blood pressure and perhaps even inversely related to cardiovascular risk—and more to do with highly-refined carbohydrates and sugars." The Problem Started In The 1970s Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was far cheaper to use in their products. In fact, HFCS is the #1 source of calories in America!!!( 3) It’s found in almost everything you can think of. More specifically, in sodas and fruit juices. But also in many pre-packaged foods. This also includes “healthy sugars” sweetened with agave. My Proven “Prescription” and Recommendation For You You must do your best to limit and eliminate all HFCS and to do this, make sure you read labels. Again, the LESS pre-packaged the food, the better. Limit your TOTAL fructose to 25 grams or less, that’s about 100 calories daily. This includes the natural fructose found in fruits. If you are already suffering from high blood pressure or signs of insulin resistance like diabetes, overweight and high cholesterol, you should be particularly careful to limit your fructose, including that from whole fruits, to 15 grams per day or less. That’s about 60 calories daily. So there you have it. Focus more on limiting your sugars, this includes fruit sugar, fructose … and especially “high fructose corn syrup” which is found in most pre-packaged foods, especially sodas and fruit juices. A Taiwanese study showed no adverse effect from two capsules of nattokinase (2000 FU per capsule) a day for two months. It may help reduce blood pressure as thins blood. Specifically, I wanted to talk about how it can raise your blood pressure. By better understanding the effects of salt on your blood pressure, you may be better able to manage that aspect of your health moving forward. Before I get started, I want to mention that salt has many roles in the human body and I'm going to specifically focus on blood pressure in this lecture. In a nutshell, sodium (or Na+), which I'll just refer to as salt ( NaCl) for now, helps your kidneys retain water. This serves a very essential function to our overall health and well being. The salt circulating in our bloodstream, and in the rest of our body, helps keep our circulatory system filled and allows the heart to do its job of delivering oxygen around the body. It is the job of your kidneys to regulate the amount of salt in your circulatory system. If total salt goes up, your kidneys will filter more out. If total salt goes down, those filters will close and your body will try to retain salt. This affects your blood pressure directly because the water "follows" the salt if you will. It does this through a physical process called osmosis. According to the American Heart Association, we require about 1500 mgs of salt per day. As Americans, we consume about 3,400 mg/day, more than twice what we need. Furthermore, 75% of the salt we consume comes from processed food and restaurant, and less than 25% from what we add ourselves. It's also worth noting that some people are more sensitive to salt intake than others. So if you have no heart or kidney problems, you're most likely able to filter out the excess salt. However, if you have heart or kidney issues, or you are particularly sensitive, then the excess salt can start causing problems and potentially damage some of your organ systems. Salt has several names including sodium, Na, Na+, NaCl, KCl and low sodium. Unsalted, no salt added, sodium free are terms you should look for on a nutrition facts label. Elevated sodium levels are associated with heart disease, heart attack, myocardial infarction, CAD or coronary artery disease, embolisms and blood clots, brain disease, stroke, dementia, vascular disease, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, arteriostenosis, kidney disease, kidney failure, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, kidney stones and headaches. Symptoms of too much salt include dehydration, bloating, puffiness, weight gain, increased thirst, and excessive thirst. There are many ways to lower, decrease salt intake. This is because it can lead to: -Hypertension and high blood pressure -Hardening and narrowing of your arteries -Higher cholesterol and plaque build up Warning Signs Some of what “warning signs” that you may have circulation problems include Frequent pain and cramping in your legs Tingling or numbness in your feet Tired, aching or weak legs and feet Slow-healing wounds Thickened toenails Varicose and “spider” veins Why Circulation Is So Important Now, improving circulation to your legs is very important because you have to pump the blood uphill to your heart… going against gravity! When you walk, your foot and leg muscles are contracting and relaxing and basically acting like a “second heart”, to continually pump blood back up through your legs and to your heart. Unfortunately, if you are sedentary for prolonged periods of time … like sitting for too long, on a long flight or bedridden… your “second heart” is inactive and blood can gather in your veins and around your ankles and this can lead to pain in the lower legs… and worst case scenario it can lead to a life-threatening blood clot. The good news is that by performing regular leg exercises, you can promote healthy blood flow from you legs to your heart and thus, help prevent blood clots and leg pain. Exercises Walking I think walking is one of the best exercises you can do and almost anyone can do it, any where, any time of the day and it doesn’t cost you anything. Ideally you would walk outside in fresh air if possible. First thing morning and/or late evening are good times but, whenever you can is a better than nothing. To start, all you need is about 15 minutes, 3x weekly. Ideally you would work up to daily walks of about 30 minutes. And if you have pain or trouble walking, even 3 minutes is a good start. Try your best to walk just a little bit every single day. Rebounder A rebounder is basically a mini trampoline. I like this because it is very low impact and super easy on your joints. It also helps clean your lymph nodes, which helps prevent many cancers and illnesses. I put mine in front of the TV while watching a favorite show and do it for about 10-20 minutes daily. You don’t need much at all. By the way, you’re not trying to jump high on it and try to touch the ceiling. You only need to go up a few inches. Just enough for your toes to be off the roubound. It’s just a light up and down motion. Again, almost anyone can do it, any time and anyplace. You can even travel with it. Body Weight Squats This last exercise is great for building and strengthening your entire lower body … From your ankles to your leg muscles and all the way to your lower back and stomach. You can simply use your own bodyweight and do sets of about 15-20 repetitions. Of course, if you’re first starting out, simply doing even 2-3 comfortable repetitions is a great start. Go down as far your comfortable and without pain. Over time, as you get stronger and more flexible, you can do more repetitions and go deeper. Ideally, you would do maybe 1 set of 15 or more repetition, 2-3x daily. Maybe in the morning, noon and night time. More often and throughout the day helps keep the blood flow regular and continuous. And if you don’t have good coordination, simply hold onto a wall or something sturdy as you squat down. Summary Poor blood flow is bad for your health, if affects your entire body. 7 Natural ways to lower your blood pressure High blood pressure is also called hypertension. Two factors contribute to high blood pressure: the quantity of blood your heart pumps and how narrow your arteries are. High blood pressure raises your risk of heart problems and strokes. If you have slightly high blood pressure (prehypertension), exercise can help you avoid developing full-blown hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels. 4.Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 millimeters of mercury. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. 5. Supplement your diet with nuts, seeds, and legumes. They are relatively high in fat, but they also have magnesium, potassium, fiber, and protein. I call this the “non-exercise” exercise because it requires no gym, equipment or even real movement. Now, some of you may have heard of this. Unfortunately most do it incorrectly. Kegel exercises are done to strengthen the perineal muscles. To “flex” this muscle, it’s very simple. One way to describe how to do it is, by contracting your anus muscle, as if you’re trying to hold in gas. Go ahead and give it a try now... Another way to do it is stop peeing midway through. Thus, as you’re peeing, “contract the muscle” that will STOP the pee, midway through. That’s it - that’s a kegel exercise. Super simple, but extremely effective. You can literally do it anywhere, anytime and nobody would know. Sets & Reps You should do kegel’s about 3x a week to start with. Over time, slowly build up to 5x weekly. Just don’t do it every single day because like any muscle, it requires rest to gain strength. Contract the muscle (holding in gas or stop peeing) and hold for 3-5 seconds. Relax for 1-2 seconds. That’s ONE repetition Do this 10 of these, for 10 repetitions. That’s ONE set Do one set of 10 repetitions, 3x weekly. Then maybe the next week do 2 sets of 10 reps and work up to 3 sets of 10 reps, 3x weekly. You can do it all at once, or break it up 2-3x daily. Nothing it set in stone. What matters is consistency, persistence and patience. Another cause would be that your back isn’t aligned well and you need a chiropractic adjustment or a massage to relax the muscles around your spine and neck. Again, this is more prevalent these days because we’re sitting so long, hunched over the computer with poor posture. Finally, another major reason for poor blood flow would be because inflammation... Which requires an anti-inflammatory diet and anti-inflammatory supplements, herbs and vitamins. It’s VERY IMPORTANT to know that poor blood flow and circulation is one of the primary causes of a heart attack or stroke. This is because it can lead to: -Hypertension and high blood pressure -Hardening and narrowing of your arteries -Higher cholesterol and plaque build up So whether you feel it in your hands or your feet, it’s a WARNING SIGN that you MUST improve your blood flow and circulation. SOLUTIONS So let’s continue and I’ll quickly reveal one of the 3 best solutions for improving blood flow and circulation to your hands Hand Squeezing/Gripping This is for strengthening your grip and your hand muscles, while increasing blood flow. Grab anything you can squeeze… this can be something “soft”, such as rolled up socks. Or something a lot firmer like a tennis ball. If you’re weak, start with something softer and build up to a firmer tennis ball as you gain strength. You should squeeze the object, then HOLD for at least 1-2 seconds, then release. That’s ONE repetition. Do at least 10 repetitions and work up to 20-30 reps… or until you feel a good burn in your hands. That’s ONE set. Then back to the original hand. Better to start with your STRONGER hand. You should do 2-3 sets of at least 15 or more repetitions, 3x weekly on alternate days. Such as Mon, Wed and Fri. Remember, you need to squeeze and HOLD to really FEEL the muscles contract and increase blood flow and muscle contractions to the area. After you're done, massage and stretch your hands and forearms. Wrist Curls Now we want to strengthen your wrist and your forearm muscles. To do this, you’ll do wrist curls and reverse wrist curls. To do a wrist curl, you’ll need a light dumbbell and slowly curl the weight from the bottom to the top. You can put your forearms on your leg, on a bench or anything stable. Do 3 sets of 15-25 repetitions, 3x weekly. And then you’ll also want to do reverse wrist curls for the top of your forearms. Same idea, but going the opposite direction. Again, 3 sets of 15-25 repetitions, 3x weekly. Just like the hand squeezing/gripping exercise, do these on alternate days … But this time, let’s do it on OTHER days -- Tues/Thurs/Sat if possible. This way we are exercising your hands and forearms every day. However, if that’s not possible, just do them all on the same days as the gripping exercise -- Mon/Wed/Fri Walking Even though this video is about blood flow to your hands, your BODY as a WHOLE requires better circulation... How to IMPROVE BLOOD CIRCULATION to the BRAIN? Blood circulation is vital for your body's survival. Blood transports oxygen, fuel and nutrients to all organs of the body, including the brain. It also moves toxins and waste products to the appropriate organs for excretion. When blood flow to your brain is disrupted, you can succumb to a stroke. Circulatory System Your circulatory system includes your heart, veins and arteries. Their job is to circulate blood throughout your body. The heart is a muscle and needs to be strong while your arteries and veins should be pliable and without obstructions for you to maintain optimum health. 10 Ways to Control High Blood Pressure Without Medication. Cure HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Naturally! By making these 10 lifestyle changes, can lower your blood pressure,reduce your risk of heart disease. If you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you might be worried about taking medication to bring your numbers down. Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you might avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication. Here are 10 lifestyle changes can make to lower your blood pressure and keep it down. 1. Lose extra pounds and watch your waistline Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea), which further raises your blood pressure. Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes for controlling blood pressure. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) can help reduce your blood pressure. Besides shedding pounds, you generally should also keep an eye on your waistline. Carrying too much weight around your waist can put you at greater risk of high blood pressure. In general: Men are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 40 inches (102 centimeters). Women are at risk if their waist measurement is greater than 35 inches (89 centimeters). These numbers vary among ethnic groups. Ask your doctor about a healthy waist measurement for you. 2. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity at least 30 minutes most days of the week can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It's important to be consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again. If you have slightly high blood pressure (prehypertension), exercise can help you avoid developing full-blown hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels. The best types of exercise for lowering blood pressure include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing. Strength training also can help reduce blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise program. 3. Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. It isn't easy to change your eating habits, but with these tips, you can adopt a healthy diet: Keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat, even for just a week, can shed surprising light on your true eating habits. Monitor what you eat, how much, when and why. Consider boosting potassium. Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure. The best source of potassium is food, such as fruits and vegetables, rather than supplements. Talk to your doctor about the potassium level that's best for you. Be a smart shopper. Read food labels when you shop and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you're dining out, too. 4. Reduce sodium in your diet Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. The effect of sodium intake on blood pressure varies among groups of people. In general, limit sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day or less. However, a lower sodium intake — 1,500 mg a day or less — is appropriate for people with greater salt sensitivity, including: African-Americans Anyone age 51 or older Anyone diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease To decrease sodium in your diet, consider these tips: Read food labels. If possible, choose low-sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy. Eat fewer processed foods. Only a small amount of sodium occurs naturally in foods. Most sodium is added during processing. Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices to add flavor to your food. Ease into it. If you don't feel you can drastically reduce the sodium in your diet suddenly, cut back gradually. Your palate will adjust over time. 5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol — generally more than one drink a day for women and for men older than age 65, or more than two a day for men age 65 and younger. One drink equals 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points. It can also reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications. 6. Quit smoking Each cigarette you smoke increases your blood pressure for many minutes after you finish. Quitting smoking helps your blood pressure return to normal.

People can lower their blood pressure quickly by modifying their lifestyle, including diet and exercise. According to a recent study, lifestyle modifications can be just as effective as medication. Researchers studied the effects of adapting the Newstart Lifestyle program. The program includes a vegan diet and daily walks outside. It also includes substantial quantities of water, adequate daily sleep and optional spiritual activities.
