Mini-Keto Course: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Need More Details on What to Eat: https://shop.drberg.com/burn-fat-booklet Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Download Keto Essentials https://m.me/drericberg?ref=w2128577 Dr. Berg answers the question "will doing a high fat ketogenic diet clog your arteries?" It sounds logical that adding fat to the body will increase more fat in the arteries and on the body, however, that’s not how it works. Hormones turn calories into different things. The main hormone insulin is responsible for changing carbs into clogged arteries and fat on your body. If you keep insulin low by keeping carbs low - the dietary fat will not clog the arteries nor will it end up making you fat. Insulin is very inflammatory and can also start the progressive inflammatory process of your arteries. Hey guys, dr. berg here and in this video we are going to talk about will doing a high fat ketogenic diet clog your arteries. Just from the pure observation of eating more fat and a fatty clogged artery, it sounds logical that if you were to eat fat you are going to get a clogged artery. It sounds logical that you would eat more fat and then get more fat in your body but it is not how it works in the body because in the body there is a various hormones that tell certain types of calories what to convert into and the hormone that tells the body whether to clog or clean out the artery really is called insulin. Insulin is like the switch that converts fat into the body storage and also clogs arteries. Insulin is a very inflammatory hormone if you have too much of it you could get a lot of inflammation which can set you up for a whole series of events from the body starts healing the inflammation in the arteries with a combination of the cholesterols, calcium and fibrous kind of a connective tissue to form a little bit of a clot. What started that would be the high levels of insulin, not necessarily consuming cholesterol. Cholesterol is made by almost every single cell in the body. Your body makes about 3,000mg of cholesterol every single day. 3,000mg of cholesterol is equal to 300 strips of bacon, about a pound of butter or 14 eggs. Your body makes a lot of cholesterol. When you consume more fat, your body just makes less. That’s how it works. What really creates this clogged arteries is high levels of insulin by consuming too many carbohydrates. If you were to cut your carbohydrates down, like the breads, pasta, cereal, crackers, things like that, and sugar. If you would cut that down, you would notice your cholesterol would go way down. Also your triglycerides and your bad cholesterol will go way down. If you were to increase the sugar and the insulin, your cholesterol goes up and you should even experiment yourself to see if this is true for you. But what I want to give you is I have a little mini course that is very quick and you can probably get it done in maybe 20 minutes on ketosis to give you the basics. I show you how it works, what to eat, the tweaks that I am going to recommend and the side effects. Course materials at http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/bb451 Highlights Steroid Metabolism / Fat Transport 1. The liver senses the body's need for lipids via LDL receptors. If lipids are needed, VLDLs are packaged by the liver and released. These get degraded by lipases and other enzymes to IDLs and LDLs. LDLs are taken up by cells when needed. If the liver LDL receptor cannot detect LDLs in the blood, it continues to release more lipids in lipoprotein complexes. 2. LDL receptors are a leading cause of high blood cholesterol. Other factors to consider include dietary cholesterol, cholesterol synthesis rate, and efficiency of recycling cholesterol. Statins inhibit HMG-CoA Reductase. 3. LDLs are referred to as "bad" cholesterol, because they are associated with formation of atherosclerotic plaques. 4. HDLs are referred to as "good cholesterol", because they are associated with reducing levels of cholesterol. HDLs are reduced in smokers, but are increased in response to exercise. 5. LDLs can lead to formation of atherosclerotic plaques. These arise due to oxidative damage of unsaturated fatty acids in the LDL by reactive oxygen species. The immune system attacks these damaged LDLs. 6. Factors increasing LDLs include smoking, obesity, and saturated fat in the diet. 7. High levels of HDLs correlate with reduced incidences of atherosclerosis. Factors increasing HDLs include exercise and factors decreasing them include obesity and smoking. 8. SREBP (Steroid response element binding protein) is a protein that plays a role in controlling whether or not HMG-CoA reductase is made. When cholesterol is abundant, SREBP is found in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum linked to SCAP through the regulatory (REG) region of SREBP. When cholesterol is abundant, SCAP-SREBP-A is held in the endoplasmic reticulum's membrane by a protein called INSIG 9. When cholesterol levels in the cell fall, the SCAP/SREBA complex loses its connection to INSIG and moves to the Golgi Complex where serine protease cleaves SREBP-A to release SREBP-B. SREBP-B migrates in the membrane to a metalloprotease, which clips the DNA binding region to free SREBP-C from the membrane-bound portion. The SREBP-C enters the nucleus and binds to the promoter region in front of the HMG-CoA Reductase, causing HMG-CoA Reductase to be synthesized. 10. HMG-CoA reductase can be broken down when cholesterol is abundant. Another INSIG carries an enzyme to ubiquitinylate the HMG-CoA reductase. Ubiquitin is a "flag" to the cell to digest it with a protease. 11. Phosphorylation of HMG-CoA reductase is also regulated by feedback inhibition and phosphorylation. Thus, HMG-CoA reductase can be regulated in multiple ways - synthesis, degradation, phosphorylation, allosterism. 12. Cholesterol is a precursor of the bile acids. Two examples include glycocholate and taurocholate. 13. Cholesterol is a precursor of the steroid hormones - all derived from pregnenolone and include Androgens (male sex hormones), Estrogens (female sex hormones), Mineralocorticoids (regulation Na/K and blood pressure), Glucocorticoids (fat/protein degradation & swelling/inflammation), and Progestagens (maintenance of pregnancy) . 14. Conversion of androgens to estrogens requires action of the aromatase enzyme. Some tumors are stimulated by estrogens, such as estradiol. Inhibition of them by aromatase inhibitors is a strategy of some chemotherapies. 15. Vitamin D is derived from cholesterol. A reaction converting 7-dehydrocholesterol to Previtamin D3 requires ultraviolet light. Conversion of Previtamin D3 to Vitamin D3 occurs spontaneously. Fatty Acid Oxidation 1. Breakdown of fats occurs by action of enzymes known as lipases. 2. Fatty acid oxidation and fatty acid synthesis are almost identically the chemical reverse of each other.

Recently I went to my doctor's appointment and saw that I was borderline Hypertension. He also said that my T-Cells dropped as well. This is NOT good. But I'm still undetectable which is good. All my vitals were goo except of course because of hypertension. I'm only 33 and someone has told me I'm much too young to have this diagnosis. Since I'm in school for my Master's Degree, Activism, Writings, and having a kid on top of that stress has been at its highest I've ever had in my life. After my appointment my doctor has told me that my cholesterol is under control and everything seems to be doing well. He has recommended I go back on Fish Oil and Vitamin D. Let's talk about way to lower cholesterol naturally without drugs. 🎥 You HAVE to watch our latest video! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?playnext=1&list=UUu9UOdsWTNRopIP-RSWuEDQ 🎥 About 1 years ago, my doctor told me that I had high cholesterol. I did not want to get on pharmaceutical drugs to lower cholesterol, so my doctor and I decided to try to get my LDL down with supplements and diet. Through some dietary changes and supplements I was able to effectively lower my high cholesterol naturally. My doctor told me to limit my red meat intake including pork, ground beef, and anything that walks on 4 legs, and to eat more of things that walk on 2 legs (chicken, turkey, etc) and fish. Also he put me on Red Yeast Rice at 1200mg to take once daily. After getting home, I read my nutritionally healing book and also added Niacin and Apple Pectin to my supplements. Also in my diet change, I added A LOT of raw fruits and vegetables. I eat a handful of tomatoes every morning with some apple, and I also eat a handful of walnuts along with some cereal with almond milk (cow's milk has a lot of fat in it). I want to stay healthy so that I can be with my wife and kids longer because I want to travel the world with them more. Hopefully I can get my cholesterol even more under control. Get the Lectin Avoidance Diet cookbook: http://bit.ly/lectincookbook. Dr. Gundry exposes the dangerous truth behind lectins and how they relate to autoimmune disease. Most importantly, he shares his vast experience and research on why lectins are so harmful to the body, and how to reverse the damages they cause. Anyone who reads SelfHacked knows I am very ‘anti-lectin’ for people with autoimmune/inflammatory issues. Dr. Gundry, originally a very famous heart surgeon, discovered how dangerous lectins are and altered his career to help people reverse autoimmune disease through his matrix diet. He has completed the only human study related to lectins and is now the most knowledgeable on the subject. His second book "the Plant Paradox" is coming out on April 25th.

Religions prescribe periods of fasting. Ancient Greeks did it for mental clarity. In the last 50 years there has been a strong move against fasting. 03:06 Nothing Wrong with Fasting: Dr. Fung investigated fasting and found that fasting had a great many benefits. Periodic fasting allows your body to burn off fat. Dr. Fung uses it with all of his overweight patients. Blood sugar medications need to be monitored closely once implementing fasting, or blood sugar could go too low.05:25 Hypoglycemia: If you are taking blood sugar meds, you may become hypoglycemic. 09:42 Muscle Loss and Fasting: Starvation mode and muscle loss are two of the many myths. Hypoglycemia is not a big concern unless you are taking blood sugar meds. As you fast, you will consume glycogen. 16:53 Hormones of Fasting: Fasting increases growth hormone. It increases noradrenaline. These are counter regulatory hormones, which counter the effect of insulin. Insulin lowers blood glucose. 22:04 Three Day a Week Fast: Dr. Fung does 24 hour fasts. 26:32 Anti-Aging Benefits: Skin is protein, so skin may alter with intermittent fasting. During the process of fasting, you get rid of old cells as part of renovation. 28:44 Autophagy: mTOR is a major regulator of autophagy. Protein turns off autophagy. mTOR is a nutrient sensor, sensing protein. 33:37 Salt and Fasting: One reason why Dr. Fung’s patients use bone broth during a fast is for salt intake. 35:49 Kidney Function: 37:07 Hormone Impacts: The main hormone affected by fasting is insulin. 42:17 Cortisol and Fasting: Cortisol does rise with fasting. It is part of the counter regulatory hormones. 43:14 Noradrenaline & Fasting 48:09 Calories: Calories have nothing to do with weight loss. Fasting is about changing your hormones. 49:50 Nutrient Changes in the 1950s: There was little obesity. People ate cookies, white bread and ice cream. You ate within a 10 hour window. 54:51 Bullet Proof Coffee/Fat Fasting: Many of the benefits of fasting come from reducing insulin. Pure fat has almost no insulin effect. 56:26 Ketogenic Diet: Intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet are along the same spectrum, close cousins. The ultra-low carb ketogenic diet lowers insulin. Low carb diet delivers 71% of the insulin lowering of fasting. 01:00:39 Dr. Fung’s Morning Routine: 01:03:45 Dr. Fung’s Favorite Nutrient: 01:07:54 Dr. Fung’s Elevator Pitch: We need to teach people about the therapeutic value of fasting. It has the potential to change the entire health system of the world. Most of what we do is treat diabetes, high blood pressure and all of the downstream issues. All of this can be taken care of for free. We need to spread the knowledge of how to do it.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwgiDJYnUG4uyEjDbfqoD0Q Hypothyroidism & Cholesterol! Even though the link between hypothyroidism and cholesterol has been well known and documented since 1936, very few people today understand this connection or are even aware of it. The truth is that you are being left in the dark when it comes to their cholesterol. Just mentioning the word cholesterol is enough to make most people cringe in disgust. But have you ever thought about WHY we have cholesterol in the first place? Cholesterol happens to be the precursor to every vital protective hormone that your body produces. Without it, you would not be able to produce these protective hormones and you would die. It’s as simple as that. So, cholesterol is not quite as bad as you may think. Your body needs cholesterol, vitamin A, and active T3 thyroid hormone to produce the multitude of protective hormones that play an integral role in preventing and overcoming hypothyroidism. Some of these protective hormones include: 1. Pregnenolone 2. Progesterone 3. DHEA 4. Testosterone Before putting your faith in any drug, it’s important to also look at the potential side effects. In most cases, using a drug to avoid one health problem only exposes you to an increased risk of developing a number of other health problems. Statin Drugs in particular have been linked to an increased risk of: Progressive Muscle Disease, Diabetes, Liver Damage, Digestive Problems, Immunological Disorders, Memory Loss, Lou Gehrig’s Disease Maybe you’re a betting person and you’re willing to take the risk of developing any of these other health issues and you truly believe that cholesterol lowering drugs are saving your life. Maybe you’re of the mindset that whatever doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger? Maybe you still believe that the lower your cholesterol the better? Endocrinologist and thyroid expert, Dr. Broda Barnes, said it perfectly when she stated that "if you suffer from Hypothyroidism and you don’t die early from infectious disease then you’ll die a little later from Cancer or Heart Disease." So take action. If your cholesterol is high, test for hypothyroidism before starting any treatment. Check out The Hypothyroidism Revolution here: http://www.homehealthguide.cf/lp/hypothyroidism/da to learn how to treat it. ==================================================== Brief Video Description In this video you will learn how to deal with Hypothyroidism. (All proceeds Dr. Greger receives from the sales of his books, DVDs, and speaking engagements go to support the 501c3 nonprofit that runs NutritionFacts.org.) DESCRIPTION: Sellers of coconut oil use a beef industry tactic to downplay the risks associated with the saturated fat in their products. Here are the two saffron videos I referenced: Saffron for the Treatment of Alzheimer's (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/saffron-for-the-treatment-of-alzheimers/) and Saffron Versus Aricept (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/saffron-versus-aricept/). The spice may also help with PMS (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/saffron-for-the-treatment-of-pms/) and depression (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/saffron-vs-prozac/). Think my water in Coke joke was too over the top? When a corporate exec was asked on the stand (http://www.mcspotlight.org/case/trial/quotes.html) if Coca Cola was "nutritious" he said that it is "providing water, and I think that is part of a balanced diet." More on meat industry hijinks in videos like Meat Mythcrushers (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/meat-mythcrushers/), Cattlemen's Association Has Beef With Study (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/cattlemens-association-has-beef-with-epic-study/), Unsafe at Any Feed (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/unsafe-at-any-feed/), and my blog post E. coli O145 Ban Opposed by Meat Industry (http://nutritionfacts.org/2012/06/09/e-coli-o145-ban-opposed-by-meat-industry/). The "compared to butter" bit reminds me of the "compared to pork" nuttiness: Nuts and Bolts of Cholesterol Lowering (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/nuts-and-bolts-of-cholesterol-lowering/). What was that thing I said about saturated animal fat and endotoxins? Pick your meal plan here - http://athleanx.com/x/my-workouts Subscribe to this channel here - http://bit.ly/2b0coMW The Keto Diet is a popular method of eating that is used when people want to burn fat and lose weight. In this video, I’m going to review my thoughts on the sustainability of this eating plan and help you to decide whether it is right for you. You will have to evaluate what your short and long term goals are for getting ripped and I will help you to do that. First it is important to understand where the ketogenic diet comes from. It is actually an old school diet approach that has been around for a long time. The concept is for you to dramatically switch the proportions of macronutrients that make up your daily caloric intake to shift the body from relying on glucose for its primary fuel source to ketones. Glucose from carbohydrates is the number one preferred source of fuel for our muscles and brains. In fact, there are certain areas of the brain where glucose is the only source of fuel that can be utilized to provide peak functioning. When you follow a keto diet, you cut your carb intake down to 5% or less of your total daily calories. All of the carbs that you do eat come from green leafy vegetables while great care is taken to avoid starches like rice, potatoes, pasta, oatmeal, beans, etc. The bulk of your diet comes from fats and proteins. This means that when you are following a ketogenic diet that you are relying on lots of meats, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, heavy cream, oils, etc. Even healthy foods like fruit are excluded. Foods rich in fiber would also be excluded if they fall in the starchier category named already. So the idea is to gradually make your body rely on ketones for fuel. While this may be a more efficient energy source it definitely does not come without some repercussions. The biggest of which is the depletion of your body’s stores of glycogen. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose and is kept inside your muscles primarily and broken down for energy when training. If your glycogen levels are depleted it becomes very hard to train intensely. Even if you do find a way to increase your energy and intensity to train hard, it often results in an increase in cortisol as this presents an increased stress to the body due to the insufficient fuel depots. Both the increase in cortisol and the decreased glycogen can significantly and negatively impact your body’s ability to preserve lean muscle let alone build new muscle tissue. Many will say that they lose lots of fat when on a ketogenic diet. It is true that you will see rapid weight loss when following a keto diet (making it a perfect option for those that need to fit into a certain outfit and time isn’t on your side). That said, fat loss is a minimal part of the equation. The reason you are losing lots of weight but not necessarily fat is that along with the glycogen depletion comes a lot of lost water. When carbohydrates are minimized, the hydro portion or water is lost as well. This is why what appears to be many lost pounds on the scale when following a keto diet doesn’t necessarily mean permanent loss. Along those same lines, the very fact that a ketogenic diet is based on deprivation and near exclusion of dietary carbohydrates often leads to this being a solution that is not sustainable. The real question you have to ask yourself if whether you can maintain whatever diet you follow for life. I believe in long term, permanent weight loss solutions that let you lose body fat while still allowing you to build muscle. If you are looking for a meal plan that allows you to do both and is the same exact one that I use to stay ripped year round, head to http://athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training Systems. Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: https://www.drberg.com/how-to-do-ketosis Download Keto Essentials https://m.me/drericberg?ref=w2128577 Dr. Berg talks about if it's okay to do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting if you have a heart condition. In the chain of events of developing a heart condition you first get damage to the lining of the arteries. Cholesterol will then come in and start to heal it. The arteries become stiff and then you get the high blood pressure. We then get put on a statin, which is given a black label - because it causes diabetes which increases your risk of heart disease. And the blood pressure meds (thiazides and beta blockers) contribute to insulin resistance further causing the problem. Recently I had a question from someone who wanted to know if is it okay to do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting if you have a heart condition, this is a big fat yes. In fact you will get a heart condition if you don’t do ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting and if you are going to do a typical high carbs you would get a heart problems. Let’s talk about why. Because in a chain of events that occurs before you get the buildup of cholesterol there is always a damage to epithelial lining on the inside of the arteries and what damages is that is high blood sugar and high insulin. Those two things will damage the wall, the cholesterol comes in as a band aid, same thing with the calcium and protein fibrin that comes in the artery to help heal it, it is not the bad guy it is just there to help heal it and then the person consuming too many carbohydrates they are going to have high cholesterol because those turn into sugar and those sugar converted into high cholesterol and you would take a drug for that and lower it called the statin but the problem with statins is it causes insulin resistance and more insulin so it keeps feeding itself. But then what happens is the arteries get stiff, calcium builds up and then you don’t have the elasticity so there goes the high blood pressure and then there is diuretic drug that we can put you on. The problems with diuretics is they deplete potassium also they will increase insulin and could cause insulin resistance as well. So it feeds itself as well, if you don’t have enough potassium, it is really hard to fix this blood sugar problems because people with high blood sugar and insulin resistance always have the potassium deficiency in the first place and by taking potassium you can actually improve that condition and stabilize blood sugars a lot better and the blood sugar and insulin problem will also cause high blood pressure because it is gonna harden the arteries and make the arteries in elastic so there is no expansion but no problem because we can put you in a diuretic to reduce the blood volume and the pressure should come down because it increases your risk for insulin resistance therefore it causes more insulin and propelling the problem further and also it creates the deficiency of potassium which you need to actually fix insulin resistance. The DASH diet is one of the best studied, and consistently ranks as US News & World Report’s #1 diet. It’s one of the few diets that medical students are taught about in medical school. I was so fascinated to learn of its origins as a compromise between practicality and efficacy. Watch as cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson explains how sunshine lowers cholesterol levels. Subscribe to learn more of our natural health tips ►► https://goo.gl/J8JRjs Could sunshine lower your cholesterol levels? The answer is a resounding “yes!” And I’m Dr. Jack Wolfson, board-certified cardiologist and I want to tell you that the sun gives us so much healing benefit. But let’s talk in particular about sunshine and cholesterol levels. So, the body makes cholesterol naturally. It does so many different things in our body and I talk about this of course in my book and on my website. But cholesterol is important, but we want just the right amount for us to get the job done. Well, as the body is making cholesterol, before it becomes cholesterol, it’s another molecule named 7-Dehydrocholesterol. It’s almost there but before it gets to cholesterol, if the sun hits it, it becomes vitamin D. And we all know that the people with the highest levels of vitamin D have the lowest risk of just about everything. So, what happens is if we don’t get enough sunshine we’re not going to turn it into vitamin D and therefore we have excess cholesterol. That’s why people that live farther away from the equator, people that are away from the sun, have higher cholesterol levels and higher cardiac risk. So, get sunshine today. Instead of making excess cholesterol, make that excess vitamin D. Live longer. And live healthier.
