Pen diagnoses cancer 'in seconds'

RESTRICTIONS: Broadcast: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Digital: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Scientists at the University of Texas have developed a handheld device that can detect cancer in 10 seconds. The pen is aimed for use by medical professionals during surgery. After a tissue sample is taken, the surgeon uses a pen connected to a mass spectrometer and foot pump to begin analysis. The pump sends water through the pen the via tubing and forms a droplet. This absorbs molecules from the tissue, and is then sent back up the tubing for analysis. The machine then investigates the molecules for signs of cancer and provides diagnosis in seconds. The device was showcased this week at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Dr. John P Williams: Breast Cancer Surgeon & Advocate

01:56
Dr. John P. Williams is a national leader in patient education and advocacy. A breast cancer surgeon in Northern Virginia, he founded the Breast Cancer School for Patients. VISIT THE BREAST CANCER SCHOOL FOR PATIENTS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org LIST OF QUESTIONS FOR YOUR DOCTORS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org/breast-health-updates-latest-videos/ FOLLOW US: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Breast-Cancer-School-for-Patients-958519147618444/ _______________________________________ Why create the Breast Cancer School for Patients? Over the years, family and friends have called me for advice about their breast care. After a quick conversation, they were incredibly empowered to ask their own doctors exactly what was needed. You simply get better care when you know about the important topics and the questions to ask. That is why we created the Breast Cancer School for Patients. Currently, the medical profession does not actually “teach” patients how to obtain quality, cutting-edge care in their communities. This is a missing link in our collective efforts to provide better quality breast cancer care in the United States. We feel it should be our duty in healthcare to teach you what you need to know before you consult with your breast cancer physicians. This way you can be more engaged with your physicians about the complexities of cancer care. This information must be readily available online, well organized, and in short video format. Our sole mission at the Breast Cancer School for Patients is to fill this patient information gap online. You will make better treatment decisions when you are taught to be an “expert” in your own breast cancer care. What is a “team approach” to breast cancer? A large part of my general surgery training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas was working with the experts in cancer treatment at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). Also located in the Texas Medical Center, MDACC is the largest dedicated cancer hospital in the United States. My general surgery rotations there exposed me to the “team approach” to breast cancer. The cutting-edge care a multidisciplinary team can offer patients is why I founded the Novant Health UVA Health Systerm Breast Center in my community in Haymarket, Virginia. It is personally rewarding that those with breast cancer in my community will now benefit from this team approach for generations to come. Do you come from a family of physicians? Growing up, I knew that I would likely become a doctor. My grandfather, L. Polk Williams, Sr. MD, brought modern medicine to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina in the early 1920s. During the Great Depression, grateful patients would leave chickens and livestock at his back door in exchange for the house calls and lifesaving care he provided. My father, L. Polk Williams, Jr. MD, followed his father into medicine, also attending Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He returned to his home town of Edenton after training in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and brought Dr. Michael Debakey’s world-class surgical care with him. I was born in Edenton and grew up in Elizabeth City, just a short drive from there. Why is being a breast cancer surgeon rewarding? I find I am interconnected in so many ways to my patients. They call me with questions. I talk with them at the grocery store. I love being there as a physician and friend when they are in need. These personal relationships are the ultimate reward for being a dedicated physician. What drives me today is doing everything in my power to obtain the best care possible for my own patients. I use every ounce of thought and energy teaching them and guiding them to get the best possible breast cancer care. Where did you attend school and train to be a surgeon? I entered Duke University as a freshman knowing that becoming a doctor was my goal. I became fascinated by the complexities of the brain and soon found myself engaged in neurology research at Duke University School of Medicine while an undergraduate. I graduated with distinction in psychology, and then attended the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Like my father, I trained in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine with Dr. Debakey. He was the world’s greatest cardiovascular surgeon of the 20th century and a leader in promoting advances in medicine and in health. Professionally, I am most proud to have applied to breast cancer care the same pursuit of excellence that I learned from Dr. Debakey and his associates at Baylor in Houston, Texas. More about Dr. John P. Williams Dr. Williams is a breast cancer surgeon in Virginia. He founded and is medical director the Novant Health UVA Health System Breast Center which serves the communities of Manassas, Gainesville and Haymarket, Virginia. Melissa Etheridge Rocked The House at CancerCon 2018

43:03
Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Melissa Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. Since the release of her self-titled debut album in 1988, Melissa has gone on to sell millions of records across the world and has won countless awards including two Grammys and an Oscar in 2007 for “I Need To Wake Up” from Al Gore’s 2004 documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” In 2004, at the age of 43, Melissa was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, she appeared at the 2005 Grammys to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin and to offer hope to millions. She took time out of her incredibly busy schedule to share her story with a Q&A Session and rock the house for the hundreds of attendees this year. Breast Cancer Screening

03:19
Current recommendations are that women should begin routine mammograms beginning at age 40. In addition, they should have an annual breast exam by their health care provider and do a breast self-exam monthly. Women at high-risk—people with a known mutation that increases their risk—should begin annual screenings by age 30—but not before age 25. In addition, they should have an annual MRI as well as annual breast exams and do monthly breast self-exams. Radiologist Wendell S. Myers, MD, says that in most cases, breast cancer is asymptomatic, "With mammograms we're hoping to find breast cancer before it can be felt—a few millimeters in size. That's why getting regular mammograms—starting at age 40—is so important—because we really want to find cancer before it can be found in any other way." Dr. Myers says that detecting breast cancer early is key to curing it, "Early breast cancer is curable in about 95 percent of cases. And obviously, if it goes longer before it is discovered, it's less likely to be curable." The Department of Radiology offers comprehensive services on the campus of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Radiology/ Wake Forest Baptist Imaging is an off-campus facility located at 265 Executive Park Blvd., Winston-Salem, North Carolina: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Imaging/

Obesity and Cancer Risk: Our Expert Weighs in on New Report

02:11
The 2012 Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer shows that cancer death rates are still on the decline in the United States, but increasing obesity remains a concern. The report notes that for more than three decades, too much weight, too little exercise and unhealthy eating habits have been second only to tobacco as preventable causes of disease and death. Since the 1960s, the report says, tobacco use has declined by a third, but obesity rates have doubled. According to the report, 2 in 3 adults and 1 in 3 kids are overweight or obese, which places them at risk for not only heart disease and diabetes, but also cancer. After reviewing more than 7,000 studies, the report's researchers have identified six cancers associated with being overweight or obese: Esophageal adenocarcinoma, colon and rectal cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, endometrial cancer and breast cancer among postmenopausal women. This review also finds convincing evidence of an association between lack of sufficient physical activity and increased risk of cancer for colon cancer. A probable association is cited for post-menopausal breast and endometrial cancers. The report notes that less than half of adults get enough physical activity. Youths get even less. In this video, Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., professor of General Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and director of MD Anderson's Integrative Medicine program, shares his reaction to the report, as well as suggestions for how we can take action now to reduce obesity and prevent cancer. The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer looks at U.S. cancer numbers from 1975 and 2008. It's a collaboration of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.

Reality Check - HOA Power to Foreclose

04:14
A mountain couple says they faced a nightmare after learning about a little known law that meant they could lose their home. In the state of North Carolina  homeowner's associations have the right to force foreclosure on your property  if you don't pay your dues. Jan and Tracie Humphries say they chose to stop paying their HOA dues after seeing little in return. Jan says he had to do a lot of neighborhood maintenance himself including keeping the road up. They live in a neighborhood where the majority of property has not been developed. They're one of the few homeowners who live there.  They say the HOA decided to take legal action and start foreclosure proceedings on their house.  After Tracie was diagnosed with breast cancer it became more difficult to catch up with what they owed. Eventually Jan cashed in his life insurance policy so the two wouldn't lose their home. Their plight is similar to many across the state. But, some legal experts argue HOA's are given the power so they will be taken seriously and so that everyone pays their fair share. The North Carolina General Assembly is currently hearing arguments that include giving HOA's either more or less power.

Baylor Health Care System Facts: Did You Know?

04:56
http://www.baylorhealth.com/About/Pages/History.aspx - Baylor Health Care System is a network of 26 hospitals with more than 3,400 beds in the Dallas-Forth Worth area. DID YOU KNOW? During the Great Depression, Baylor created the first pre-pay health care program. Today it is known as Blue Cross. Baylor established the first blood bank in 1939 and founded the American Association of Blood Banks in 1947. If "Baylor Babies" were a city, it would be the size of Arlington, TX. In the '80s, Baylor revolutionized nursing by creating the Two Days Alternative scheduling plan. It is now used in hospitals around the world. Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital has the lowest heart failure re-admission rate in the country. According to Consumer Reports, Baylor University Medical Center has the highest patient satisfaction rating of any teaching hospital. Baylor serves almost 5 people per minute. In 2011 Baylor opened the largest outpatient cancer in North Texas -- a 10-story, 467,000-square-foot home of hope, the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center. Baylor is not waiting on health care reform. By 2015, it will embrace a new model known as the accountable care organization. Into the Fringe - Dr. Karla Turner PhD - Audiobook - spoken by Julie UFO ET Alien Abduction Greys

07:16:34
An account of alien abduction describes how Dr. Karla Turner Ph.D. and her family uncovered long-buried memories and actual physical evidence of their encounters with aliens. ------------- Music ▶Into the Fringe by Dr. Karla Turner Ph.D audiobook read by Bridget - http://bit.ly/1Bzomkh No Music ▶Into the Fringe - Dr. Karla Turner Ph.D. Audiobook (spoken by Julie) http://bit.ly/2ehK2lN ------------- Karla Turner's story.... If you wanted to find four words to describe the life of alien abduction investigator Karla Turner, Ph.D., those words might be intrepid human rights activist. A former college instructor who held a doctorate in Old English Studies from the University of North Texas, Turner had authored three books on the abduction phenomenon, Into the Fringe (1992), Taken (1994), and, with psychic Ted Rice, Masquerade of Angels (1994). She was convinced that the aliens were here not to help us out, but to steal from us the sovereignty of our souls. She wanted us to fight back – with the same courage that she herself showed when, after a period of struggle – just like Mae Brussell and Ann Livingston– she succumbed to a particularly virulent, fast-acting form of breast cancer, on Jan. 9, 1996. The diminutive scholar, author and activist, who was born in 1947 and made her home in Roland, Arkansas, had been involved in alien abduction work since 1988. Two traits, she had come to conclude, characterized alien behavior above all: deceitfulness and cruelty. In Into the Fringe, she recounted the abduction experiences of herself, her husband Casey (an assumed name), and several other members of her family. The family had first became aware of their experiences in 1988. Later, they were able to recall abduction events going back to their childhoods; the experiences were uniformly disturbing. In her second book, Taken (published, like Masquerade of Angels, by her own press, Kelt Works, in Roland), Turner told the stories of eight female abductees who had contacted her after the publication of her first book. Masquerade of Angels was the biography of Louisiana psychic Ted Rice, who, used to channeling benevolent entities, then becoming aware of his alien abduction experiences, first believed the aliens were benign, then came to the conclusion that they were no more than remorseless predators. From beginning to end, Turner had been struck by how contradictory the stories of the aliens were. They would, she averred, say anything they wanted to attain their ends. As the abductees in Taken reported it, the aliens insisted variously that they had come to help us cope with upcoming ecological disaster, interbreed for our good and theirs, help us evolve, take our genetic material to revivify their dying race. Sometimes they claimed they had outright created us; other times, that they were genetically altering us for our own good. more info of her story at: http://projectcamelot.org/turner.html -------- Read along with ebook - Into the Fringe: http://bit.ly/1n1S3Jg ------ facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DrKarlaTurner ------ Dr. Karla Turner Audiobooks: ▶ Taken: Inside the Alien-Human Abduction Agenda by Dr. Karla Turner audiobook read by Bridgette - http://bit.ly/1uAPJcu ▶ Masquerade of Angels Dr. Karla Turner read by Bridget Audiobook - http://bit.ly/1GxgxkK ▶ Alien Abductions in the Gingerbread House by Karla Turner, Ph.D. audiobook (read by Daniel) - http://bit.ly/1xFtYOb Dr. Karla Turner Lectures: ▶Dr. Karla Turner's Final Lecture May 7, 1995 - San Diego, CA - (ufo, abduction, grey aliens) - http://bit.ly/1FRTLVP Testimony's Alien Abduction: ▶Dr. Karla Turner interview's six woman abducted by Alien Greys, Nordics, Extraterrestrials - http://bit.ly/194uERo ▶ Dr. Karla Turner testimony - interview with Greg Bishop Austin MUFON conference - July 9, 1994 - http://bit.ly/1Ct8wMd ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ (no money is made from this video, educational purposes only) ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
