Fighting Breast Cancer through Mobile Mammography
Learn more about the Fund: http://kayyow.com/ Coach Kay Yow's passion for helping fight breast cancer can be seen in the digital mammography equipment on two mobile units funded by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. These two units travel to over 15 different counties in North Carolina to provide mammogram screenings for 5,000 or more women a year. Wendy Avery, Clinic Coordinator for Rex Mobile Mammography says that many of the areas the units travel to are in remote areas where mammography areas simply don't exist or aren't easily accessible. In addition, Jade Watta, a mammographer on the unit, says that they also service corporate sites, giving breast cancer screenings to women who otherwise might not take the time to take care of themselves. 69 year old Lenora Woods is a breast cancer survivor who was originally diagnosed with a mobile screening on one of the units with equipment funded by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. With the benefit of early detection, Lenora was able to gain early medical intervention and treatment and is currently in full remission and active in her church and community. For Lenora, early detection was a lifesaver. Alliance Medical Ministry is a clinic that benefits from a visit from the mobile mammography unit once a month. Dr. Jaqueline Hicks, an Osteopathic Physician with the clinic, says that many of her patients who come into establish care have never had a screening mammogram, nor could they afford one, without this service. Early detection equals early treatment, she states. Because mammography is not a revenue producing modality, Wendy Avery says that funds from their partnership with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund are critical to their survival. Stephanie Glance, our Executive Director at the Fund, thinks these mobile units are right in line with Kay's mission to reach out to women who couldn't afford treatment, and Coach Yow's heart for the under-served. If you'd like to learn more about the Rex Mobile Mammography Units visiting a site near you, call 919-784-4210 or make a request here at: https://www.rexhealth.com/rh/care-treatment/imaging-radiology/mammography/r… To support programs like the mobile mammography units or research in the fight against cancer, please contact the Kay Yow Cancer fund at www.kayyow.com

Dr. John P Williams: Breast Cancer Surgeon & Advocate
Dr. John P. Williams is a national leader in patient education and advocacy. A breast cancer surgeon in Northern Virginia, he founded the Breast Cancer School for Patients. VISIT THE BREAST CANCER SCHOOL FOR PATIENTS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org LIST OF QUESTIONS FOR YOUR DOCTORS: http://www.breastcancercourse.org/breast-health-updates-latest-videos/ FOLLOW US: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Breast-Cancer-School-for-Patients-958519147618444/ _______________________________________ Why create the Breast Cancer School for Patients? Over the years, family and friends have called me for advice about their breast care. After a quick conversation, they were incredibly empowered to ask their own doctors exactly what was needed. You simply get better care when you know about the important topics and the questions to ask. That is why we created the Breast Cancer School for Patients. Currently, the medical profession does not actually “teach” patients how to obtain quality, cutting-edge care in their communities. This is a missing link in our collective efforts to provide better quality breast cancer care in the United States. We feel it should be our duty in healthcare to teach you what you need to know before you consult with your breast cancer physicians. This way you can be more engaged with your physicians about the complexities of cancer care. This information must be readily available online, well organized, and in short video format. Our sole mission at the Breast Cancer School for Patients is to fill this patient information gap online. You will make better treatment decisions when you are taught to be an “expert” in your own breast cancer care. What is a “team approach” to breast cancer? A large part of my general surgery training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas was working with the experts in cancer treatment at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). Also located in the Texas Medical Center, MDACC is the largest dedicated cancer hospital in the United States. My general surgery rotations there exposed me to the “team approach” to breast cancer. The cutting-edge care a multidisciplinary team can offer patients is why I founded the Novant Health UVA Health Systerm Breast Center in my community in Haymarket, Virginia. It is personally rewarding that those with breast cancer in my community will now benefit from this team approach for generations to come. Do you come from a family of physicians? Growing up, I knew that I would likely become a doctor. My grandfather, L. Polk Williams, Sr. MD, brought modern medicine to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina in the early 1920s. During the Great Depression, grateful patients would leave chickens and livestock at his back door in exchange for the house calls and lifesaving care he provided. My father, L. Polk Williams, Jr. MD, followed his father into medicine, also attending Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He returned to his home town of Edenton after training in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and brought Dr. Michael Debakey’s world-class surgical care with him. I was born in Edenton and grew up in Elizabeth City, just a short drive from there. Why is being a breast cancer surgeon rewarding? I find I am interconnected in so many ways to my patients. They call me with questions. I talk with them at the grocery store. I love being there as a physician and friend when they are in need. These personal relationships are the ultimate reward for being a dedicated physician. What drives me today is doing everything in my power to obtain the best care possible for my own patients. I use every ounce of thought and energy teaching them and guiding them to get the best possible breast cancer care. Where did you attend school and train to be a surgeon? I entered Duke University as a freshman knowing that becoming a doctor was my goal. I became fascinated by the complexities of the brain and soon found myself engaged in neurology research at Duke University School of Medicine while an undergraduate. I graduated with distinction in psychology, and then attended the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Like my father, I trained in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine with Dr. Debakey. He was the world’s greatest cardiovascular surgeon of the 20th century and a leader in promoting advances in medicine and in health. Professionally, I am most proud to have applied to breast cancer care the same pursuit of excellence that I learned from Dr. Debakey and his associates at Baylor in Houston, Texas. More about Dr. John P. Williams Dr. Williams is a breast cancer surgeon in Virginia. He founded and is medical director the Novant Health UVA Health System Breast Center which serves the communities of Manassas, Gainesville and Haymarket, Virginia. Obesity and Cancer Risk: Our Expert Weighs in on New Report
The 2012 Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer shows that cancer death rates are still on the decline in the United States, but increasing obesity remains a concern. The report notes that for more than three decades, too much weight, too little exercise and unhealthy eating habits have been second only to tobacco as preventable causes of disease and death. Since the 1960s, the report says, tobacco use has declined by a third, but obesity rates have doubled. According to the report, 2 in 3 adults and 1 in 3 kids are overweight or obese, which places them at risk for not only heart disease and diabetes, but also cancer. After reviewing more than 7,000 studies, the report's researchers have identified six cancers associated with being overweight or obese: Esophageal adenocarcinoma, colon and rectal cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, endometrial cancer and breast cancer among postmenopausal women. This review also finds convincing evidence of an association between lack of sufficient physical activity and increased risk of cancer for colon cancer. A probable association is cited for post-menopausal breast and endometrial cancers. The report notes that less than half of adults get enough physical activity. Youths get even less. In this video, Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., professor of General Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and director of MD Anderson's Integrative Medicine program, shares his reaction to the report, as well as suggestions for how we can take action now to reduce obesity and prevent cancer. The Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer looks at U.S. cancer numbers from 1975 and 2008. It's a collaboration of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.
As the world continues to raise awareness about Breast Cancer in the month of October, right here at home one Cancer Biologist and Researcher at the National Cancer Registry of Trinidad and Tobago is calling for awareness to be brought to all cancer types. The Cancer Registry is responsible for collecting and analysing cancer cases in an attempt to control the disease. In part one of an interview done with reporter Marie Hull, the Cancer Biologist and Researcher shares why regular checks to the doctor are important.

Prostate Screening and Awareness Program at Methodist Health System in North Texas
Former Dallas Cowboys great and prostate cancer survivor Mel Renfro talks about his work with the Prostate Screening and Awareness program at Methodist Health System in North Texas, which helps screen men for prostate cancer.
Breast Cancer Screening
Current recommendations are that women should begin routine mammograms beginning at age 40. In addition, they should have an annual breast exam by their health care provider and do a breast self-exam monthly. Women at high-risk—people with a known mutation that increases their risk—should begin annual screenings by age 30—but not before age 25. In addition, they should have an annual MRI as well as annual breast exams and do monthly breast self-exams. Radiologist Wendell S. Myers, MD, says that in most cases, breast cancer is asymptomatic, "With mammograms we're hoping to find breast cancer before it can be felt—a few millimeters in size. That's why getting regular mammograms—starting at age 40—is so important—because we really want to find cancer before it can be found in any other way." Dr. Myers says that detecting breast cancer early is key to curing it, "Early breast cancer is curable in about 95 percent of cases. And obviously, if it goes longer before it is discovered, it's less likely to be curable." The Department of Radiology offers comprehensive services on the campus of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Radiology/ Wake Forest Baptist Imaging is an off-campus facility located at 265 Executive Park Blvd., Winston-Salem, North Carolina: http://www.wakehealth.edu/Imaging/

We have got to stop the silence. There are many women and men that go undetected and this race today signifies not only in Egypt but all throughout the Middle East how important it is, because early detection saves lives." 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mohamed Esmat, volunteer: "We want to show the world and breast cancer ladies in the whole that we are with them we know that what they are going through and this is what we do for them. I mean we just show them that if we can run for this they can truly (inaudible)." 9. Various of the race 10. Wide of participants in front of Sphinx STORYLINE: Campaigners from the United States and around the Middle East gathered in Egypt's capital Cairo on Saturday for a charity event organised as part of a week-long series of events to raise breast cancer awareness in the region and beyond. Thousands of volunteers and participants joined the start line at the legendary Great Pyramids of Giza for the first 1.5 kilometre (mile) run in the Middle East and North Africa. The race was organised by the First Lady of Egypt, Suzanne Mubarak, and the non profit organisation "G.Komen for the Cure." The NGO started the public footraces, known as "Komen Race for the Cure", to break the taboo on discussing breast cancer and has become the world's largest breast cancer advocacy organisation. It is also the source of private funding for breast cancer research and care and is activating new partnerships with the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt and the Suzanne Mubarak Regional Centre for Women's Health and Development in Alexandria, with support from the governments of Egypt and the United States. Members of a US delegation, including women who had recovered from breast cancer said they were there to raise awareness and to offer their support to others. Komen for the Cure held its first Race for the Cure in Dallas, Texas, in 1983, growing to nearly 125 cities in the US and 14 cities internationally. Reality Check - HOA Power to Foreclose
A mountain couple says they faced a nightmare after learning about a little known law that meant they could lose their home. In the state of North Carolina  homeowner's associations have the right to force foreclosure on your property  if you don't pay your dues. Jan and Tracie Humphries say they chose to stop paying their HOA dues after seeing little in return. Jan says he had to do a lot of neighborhood maintenance himself including keeping the road up. They live in a neighborhood where the majority of property has not been developed. They're one of the few homeowners who live there.  They say the HOA decided to take legal action and start foreclosure proceedings on their house.  After Tracie was diagnosed with breast cancer it became more difficult to catch up with what they owed. Eventually Jan cashed in his life insurance policy so the two wouldn't lose their home. Their plight is similar to many across the state. But, some legal experts argue HOA's are given the power so they will be taken seriously and so that everyone pays their fair share. The North Carolina General Assembly is currently hearing arguments that include giving HOA's either more or less power.
