Arshawna Warren got a shocking breast cancer diagnosis before she was old enough to drive a car. After a self exam turned up something abnormal, this teen went on to beat breast cancer. See how her diagnosis has been turned into a mission for teens everywhere. ************************************************************ Want even more heartwarming stories?! Subscribe to Humankind's YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/1IrNzUN Like Humankind on Facebook: http://bit.ly/fbhkvids ************************************************************ Dawn Kendrick, WKYC - TWINSBURG, Ohio -- Fighting breast cancer starts with early detection. We know that. But how early is early enough? How about when a breast cancer diagnosis comes before you're old enough to drive a car. That's the story of Arshawna Warren, a serious Girl Scout since she was 4-years-old. She had conquered camping, cooking and first aid. But it was a lesson that earned her no badge that saved Arshawna's life at just 16-years-old. It came from her scout leader, who happens to be her mom. Doctors had diagnosed Paula Warren with breast cancer. "She taught me its very important to be aware of my body, to check regularly," Arshawna said of her mom. "I was just doing a regular check like she taught me to do every other week and I felt something kinda like a rock in my breast. It took until after the surgery to find out I had breast cancer. It was probably the scariest thing I've ever gone through in my life," Arshawna confessed. She went from scared about her own life to saving the lives of others. "I figured why not put a workshop on for young people about young people getting breast cancer or any type of cancer," Arshawna said. "It's not too early to start checking." So she started Be Pretty in Pink and designed her own pamphlet for teens. This dynamo who turned her diagnoses into a solid campaign for "early, early" detection, said "no excuses." "It takes two seconds to check. You go around, you go around and you're done. If you have time to work out, you have time to check," she said with a smile. That kind of take charge, life saving, leadership landed her the Girls Scouts highest honor, the Gold Award. Self examination is a part of her regular routine for life now and The American Cancer society is saving lives now too with the pamphlets and program this young survivor designed. Arshawna said, "They said they have been putting on workshops and I've also been asked to speak at different events so the message is still getting out there." A Hyde Park Boy Scout has accomplished what no one else in Cincinnati has ever done. The passion 12-year-old Eric Meeks carries comes from his grandmother. She died of breast cancer two years ago, when Meeks discovered his true determination. He wanted to honor his grandmother, so the scout started reading books. Eventually, he'd join the ranks of what only 252 other boys have accomplished in scouting. "One night I stayed up until 10 p.m. writing down all the requirements," Meeks said. His homework didn't stop there. Meeks' reading list also required paperwork - all on his plate while he held onto his Honor Roll status at The Summit Country Day School. Along with memories of his grandmother, Meeks had his dad to count on, too. "You know it was really an amazing journey to go to different camps and meet different people," Meeks' father said. Meeks reached his goal - 135 merit badges in under two years - a sash covered by badges on both sides. Now satisfied with his success, he says he'll look for ways to encourage others, keep playing football and volunteer as a scout leader.◂ WCPO - 9 On Your Side brings you the latest trusted news and information for the greater Cincinnati Tri-State area, including Northern Kentucky and Indiana. You could say Paola Berrios has been around the block as a Girl Scout, and she’s earned the badges to prove it. The Marietta, Georgia, 17-year old has been a Scout since the first grade. "Everybody, when they think about Girl Scouts, they say, 'Oh, do you sell cookies? Oh, you go camping in little pink tents?'” Berrios jokes. “ “No, there is so much to than it to that." But Berrios had no idea how much a badge, or a project, could mean until her mother, and closest confidante Maria Maldonado was diagnosed with breast cancer. "To say that it was a shock would be kind of an understatement,” she says. "I didn't know how to deal with it. I couldn't function for the longest time, because how could my mom have cancer?" Berrios, who is home-schooled, was able to go with her mom to her appointments at Wellstar Health System's Cancer Center, where Lisa Sherman, an oncology nurse and navigator works with patients facing breast cancer. "One of the first things they're concerned about is not them, or how they're going to get through treatment, but their family,” Sherman says. To help them cope, adults have support groups, and younger children play therapy. "But that teenage to middle school population, I hadn't come across anything that could be used, that could be relevant to them,” says Sherman. So, Berrios created The Shoulder to Lean On Project, a website to give teenagers facing a loved one's cancer diagnosis what she didn't have: a place to find advice, and information about what to expect. "I want kids to have a better experience than I did,” Berrios says. “Because I was alone, and I was afraid, and I didn't know what to do with myself. I don't want that to happen to anybody else." The website is written by teens, for teens. There is no medical jargon, and no frightening statistics, just hard-earned understanding. "I want to make a community where people feel safe, and people feel like they're going to be okay. It's hard. It sucks, but it's going to be okay." In April, Maria Maldonado was declared "cancer free." And their journey together has inspired Paola Berrios to apply to Agnes Scott College and Emory University, and eventually to medical school, to become -- you guessed it -- a cancer doctor. "This project kind of fostered a love of oncology for me, as morbid as that sounds,” Berrios says. “I've really been fascinated by it." "I can see her becoming an oncology doctor, and taking this experience and becoming an awesome one,” Sherman says. And, Paola Barrios has been nominated for the Girl Scout's highest honor: the Gold Award. It’s the ultimate patch for paying it forward. You can find The Shoulder To Lean On Project at https://theshouldertoleanonproject.wordpress.com.

A Boy Scout died on a hiking trip, and his parents say the tragedy was preventable. 15-year-old Reid Comita needed to earn one more merit badge to become an Eagle Scout. His parents say he signed up for an introductory backpacking class that was supposed to have adult supervision. Instead, they say he was sent on a more advanced hike in temperatures close to 100 degrees and the people leading it were teenagers. It's hard to miss Kevin Kerkvliet and Dean Kaminski. With matching pink shirts and the phrase "Save the TaTas" blazed along the sides of their high-end fishing boats, the two professional walleye anglers draw plenty of attention whenever they are on the water. "Nobody in the professional walleye circuit—or from the FLW bass tour, for that matter—has done something like this with breast cancer or any other nonprofit-type organization," Kerkvliet said. "My wife's mother died of breast cancer, so it gave us extra incentive to get the sponsorship worked out." Kerkvliet and Kaminski are part of the National Guard FLW Walleye Tour and travel around the country to fish in tournaments. They appeared on the Versus channel on July 31 and are on television four times each year as part of National Guard FLW Walleye Tour. This past Sunday, they spent most of the day on Lake Minnetonka, taking a half-dozen youngsters from Wayzata fishing for a few hours as part of an ongoing mission to get kids on the water. "Everything right now is a video game," Kaminski added. "They fish on a video game." "One of the things we're trying to do is get the kids outside," Kerkvliet said. After dropping the kids off, the pro anglers cruised over to Excelsior to meet with local women planning a "Save the Tatas" breast cancer fundraiser in Excelsior this October. Each Thursday, Excelsior hosts Minnesota's largest "Girl's Night Out," and on Oct. 6, Water Street will be lit pink in honor of the women and families affected by breast cancer. Details are still being hammered out, but Kerkvliet and Kaminski, along with their distinctive boats, are hoping to pitch in to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. Patch will have additional details on the Oct. 6 Girl's Night Out event in the coming weeks.
