Watch the next episode about San Francisco becoming a zero waste city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3OA1s8-SI&list=UUJsSEDFFnMFvW9JWU6XUn0Q As urban populations continue to rise, innovators are looking beyond traditional farming as a way to feed everyone while having less impact on our land and water resources. Vertical farming is one solution that's been implemented around the world. Vertical farms produce crops in stacked layers, often in controlled environments such as those built by AeroFarms in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms grows a variety of leafy salad greens using a process called "aeroponics," which relies on air and mist. AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world. More here: http://wwf.panda.org/palmoil Most palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia on land that was once thriving rainforest. As global demand grows, more and more forests are being cleared. In areas such as Borneo and Sumatra, rich in biodiversity, deforestation can be catastrophic. Endangered species including orang-utans, tigers, elephants and rhinos are losing critical habitats, pushing them toward extinction. In 2004, WWF helped set up the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a group that includes every link in the global supply chain, from growers and processors, to food companies and retailers and investors. With the RSPO, WWF developed a set of international standards for responsible palm oil production. Producers that show they meet these criteria are able to sell certified sustainable palm oil. That means companies that use it in their lipstick, soap, margarine or whatever else can make the same guarantee to their customers. Certified sustainable palm oil cannot be grown in place of primary forest or in important conservation areas. Growers have to use the best growing practices to keep soil and water supplies healthy, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. They also need to pay a decent wage and respect the rights of workers and communities. The first certified sustainable palm oil came on to the market in September 2008. Today, about 6.4% of all palm oil is certified sustainable. By looking out for CSPO, the label for sustainable palm oill, you'll be able to buy these products safe in the knowledge that you're not contributing to the destruction of the rainforests. RID 3108

Robert Eidus, Owner of Eagle Feather Organic Farm, gives advice on how to begin growing and selling forest medicinal herbs. Number one: "Don't cut down your trees." We look at stratification - the best method for increasing ginseng's propagation rate. We follow up with the importance of having a business plan before attempting to supplement income through forest-based medicinal plant production, and we finish with a few bits of advice on cutting costs. Plastic pots can often be obtained for free from other growers or nurseries and leaves can be gathered in the fall once they're put out for trash collection. However, be careful of collecting any invasive species that may be tossed in with the leaf pile. Leaves contribute to forest soil and can be combined with other organic additives and composted to be used in raised beds and for potted plants.

Sign up for the 6 EC Bachelor’s course ‘Student Company’ and start a real company with fellow students. During one year, you will do market research, write a business plan, develop a product/service, find potential customers and issue shares. Student Company is entrepreneurship in a protected environment. You will experience success and disappointments, just like in real life. All teams will be guided by a university supervisor, an external supervisor and an external financial specialist. Around the turn of the year we will organise a public evening in which you present your company, issue shares (money) to friends, family and others. In between, you might patent your idea, pitch for funding through an innovation voucher, win over customers or negotiate a collaboration agreement with a multinational. The course takes place from September to July. Then you can decide: Do you continue with your business or pay your shareholders? The course is intended for students in the final stage of the Bachelor’s at the Nijmegen School of Management and the Faculty of Science (or a related programme). You can sign up for the course from July onwards. More information via Dr. Bart Knols: firstname.lastname@example.org

Features 2 Community Carbon projects where communities are being financed to protect forests through Carbon Balanced business programmes run by CLevel. Limay, Northern Nicaragua, and Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, North East India. Both projects generate carbon ecosystem credits under the holistic Plan Vivo standard and network. Hi, I'm Daren Howarth from CLevel and I'm here to give you a brief update on our community carbon projects. We are continuing to work with people in places like Nicaragua, Nepal and Northern India; all part of a growing network that is Plan Vivo. If you want more information on Plan Vivo as a network, take a look at the video on our website that we made recently to support the growth of this network. So here's an introduction to two of the carbon project. Limay community carbon is in its fifth year now. It's located in the north of Nicaragua. Deforestation of the native forest has affected both the ecology and the economy of Limay. Nurseries have been set up, native tree seeds have been collected stored and thousands of trees have been planted out. 500,000 trees have now been planted. These trees will sequester over 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide out of the earth's atmosphere. By Carbon Balancing, over £250,000 has now been paid into the Limay community by project partners. In 2013 the plan is to plant a further 370,000 trees and bring a further 60 farmer families into the program. This will happen if organisations like yours continue to compensate for you carbon emissions from flights, from energy, from transport, by investing Limay's forests and communities. 2013 also sees the first issuance of common ecosystem credits from a brand new Plan Vivo project. This is called Khasi Hills Community REDD project. The project is situated in the North-east Indian states of Meghalaya. This is a place where forest still held sacred by parts of the community. It's one of the wettest parts of the world. Meghalaya literally means abode of the clouds, in Sanskrit. The very first organisations are now going through the process of becoming Carbon Balanced through this exciting project in India, which is helping reduce pressure on existing forests and help those forests regenerate. If you know other organisations, who don't just want to manage their carbon, but are interested in playing a key pivotal role, in a major forest conservation project, the very first project of its kind in India, then please get in touch. Thanks again for working with us and with these forest communities.

We tagged along with a squad of wilderness firefighters from the Oregonian boonies as they work to prevent their hometown from being torched to ashes like the super inflammable tinderbox that surrounds them on all sides. Check out more VICE Documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries Whenever someone at our office bitches about being overworked, our stock response is "Beats digging ditches." While the express intention of the statement is usually not-so-supportive, we think it's a healthy reminder that at the end of the day, we are all basically professional emailers and should be thankful for such. The wildland firefighters who work for Grayback Forestry in Southern Oregon have no such motivational adages because their job is actually digging ditches. Around active forest fires. On the sides of mountains. You can't even bitch at these guys for having cushy government pensions to fall back on when they get older, because they're all private-sector contractors. Which means if they aren't out fighting forest fires or doing preventative forestry on unburned woods (basically extreme landscaping), they are losing money. They are literally the hardest working men in tree business. We spent a few days following a crew of Grayback forest-firefighters walk up the sides of what most people would consider a cliff to chop down underbrush in preparation for a controlled burn. This is what they like to call "project work," aka the light stuff in between fires, and yet it was still some of the hardest most least-rewarding work we have ever tried to do in our lives. Unless you consider 12-hour-plus shifts of backbreaking labor, virtually zero outside recognition, and occasional accusations of being shills for the timber industry rewards. Which we do not. B. Routley: I listen to this debate, and we really haven't come very far from the Dirty '30s, when forest workers used to get killed and they would prop them up beside a stump and tell the rest of the crew: "Just work on. Just carry on. Everything's fine. It's just the cost of doing business." Workers had to fight over the years. In fact, part of the reason there is a union movement in British Columbia was because workers were getting killed on the job over and over and over again. Employers weren't acting on behalf of those workers and their families, so they had to fight. They had to form unions to prevent that kind of behaviour, where it was okay to prop a friend up against a stump. I've talked to the old-timers that actually had that happen to them. I've been through the experience myself in the forest industry. I remember prior to the Westray bill what happened when I was the safety chairman at the Youbou mill, and 550 people worked there. Young Patrick Krechmire, 18 years old — he might as well have been left a huge, big mousetrap. It was the incompetence and negligence of that company. There was a new tray system in the veneer plant. We had written orders that said: "Make sure you put in lockout procedures and train the workers on the new procedures." You know what they did instead? They sped up production. They got the job done adequately enough to be able to crank up production on Monday morning, and they slapped it together. That 18-year-old man went in there, and all he did was touch a little piece the size of a pencil and down came 2½ tonnes and crushed the life out of that young man. Right there was an example of absolute negligence. Then I went through it again just a few years ago with Ted Gramlich. We had the forest industry in British Columbia deciding they needed to save a few dollars. We've got sympathetic administration, and that's what I'm hearing over on the other side of the table. It's sympathetic administration playing their violin music of: "It's all okay. We're sure the employers are taking care of things. We've got WorkSafe B.C. Oh, we happened to cut a whole bunch of the regulations, but we've got WorkSafe B.C. on the job." They just happen to fail to do any of the things necessary to be able to hold people accountable in British Columbia. It is totally unacceptable to working people to see the behaviour that goes on, the lack of concern. I'm talking negligence. There are safe employers. I've seen them myself. But I've also seen this. When the Westray bill came in, you know what happened? I saw a manager of a sawmill who had the audacity, at one time, to go down and tell his crew: "Safety isn't No. 1. Production is No. 1, and that'll pay for No. 2, which is safety." He actually said that to a crew, one of the mills right here on Vancouver Island. But he had a whole new attitude when he was told by his CEO: "You could go to jail. There's new legislation. There's a new sheriff in town." Well, guess what. We found out the new sheriff is a toothless wonder. In British Columbia we haven't had a single charge of anybody. And it's worse than that. The penalty paid in B.C.'s role, on average in 2012, for a death was less than $22,000. In a report by WorkSafe B.C., out of 149 worker deaths accepted for compensation payments in 2012, six prompted fines — for a total of less than $129,000. When I think of all of the people that I have seen die.... Ted Gramlich, that faller.... Imagine a faller being sent up to an area to fall trees for heli-logging. But he was above the fog, and when the tree kicked back and crushed him, he was lying there bleeding, his leg crushed beyond belief. He was bleeding. That man probably would have lived if the contractor would have had a proper safety plan. No safety plan. They hadn't even thought about the possibility that this man could get hurt and that then you would need a helicopter to get him out of there. No plan. We need this kind of action. We need real action in British Columbia, not a sympathetic administration like we've got over there.

The Forest Genetics Council of British Columbia (FGC) is a multi-stakeholder group appointed by the Provincial Chief Forester. FGC includes representatives from the BC and federal governments, forest industry, and universities. FGC’s goals are to enhance the value, resilience and conservation of BC’s forests. It does this by developing five-year strategic and annual business plans, and coordinating research, tree breeding, tree seed production, and conservation activities across the province and internationally. FGC’s primary outputs are fast-growing and pest-resistant tree seed which boosts BC’s timber supply and economy. Since FGC’s inception in 1998, over 1.7 billion improved seedlings have been planted in BC. BC’s tree improvement program is one of the best in the world and is at the leading edge of developing climate change adaptation strategies. These accomplishments are the result of FGC’s organizational excellence and the long-term cooperation between government, the forest sector and academia.

Upstate New York’s Tug Hill region, also known as Tug Hill Plateau, is known for its timber industry, snowfall and traditional northern forest outdoor recreational opportunities. Nestled within Tug Hill is the Town of Redfield—one of the many communities that depend on the area’s working forest landscape for economic support. In 2017, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and The Conservation Fund protected the 3,236-acre Kendall property—located in Redfield and Orwell, a large property identified as a priority in the NYS Open Space Plan. Protection of Kendall Forest ensures ongoing timber resource production, safeguards water quality of the environmentally sensitive and economically important Salmon River and allows for continued public access to recreational opportunities, such as hunting and snowmobiling. Video production by Peregrine Productions, with additional footage provided by NYS Tug Hill Commission.

On the occasion of European Forest Week and Metsä2013 Joint session of the ECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission, this video highlights the importance of sustainable forestry for the future of the UNECE region and greening the economy. The UNECE/FAO Forestry & Timber Section has served as a trusted source of information, data and analysis about the forest sector in the UNECE region for more than 60 years. It also provides a forum for policy discussion about major issues that affect the forest sector. The section is unique in that it is a joint UNECE/FAO secretariat, servicing the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission and working closely with other members of the United Nations family and with country stakeholders. It operates to a mandate agreed by the 56 countries, which together comprise the UNECE region, stretching from North America to the Russian Federation and Central Asia. Its priorities and activities are presented in its Strategic Plan. Working with FAO, the Section plays a pivotal role in the regular assessment of the state of forests in the pan-European region and contributes to the periodic global Forest Resources Assessment . In addition, the section's work with Forest Europe allows a regular critical assessment of the health and sustainability of Europe's forests, using criteria and indicators drawn up by the countries active in the Forest Europe process. The results are published in the State of Europe's Forests report. The Section is also active in the field of forest policies and institutions, recognized as an integral part of sustainable forest management. These activities include information collection, analysis and dissemination, monitoring of developments, analysis of trends and capacity building. The Section addresses important cross-sectoral aspects of relevance to the forest sector, notably related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, bioenergy, biodiversity, land use, water and agriculture. For instance, the Section works to improve the knowledge and understanding of wood energy sources and uses, in particular by collecting data on wood energy in member countries through the Joint Wood Energy Enquiry, and promotes the sustainable use of wood for energy. The Section's work compiling market and, to a lesser extent, price data for forest products throughout the region, feeds into the prestigious Forest Products Annual Market Review, which appears every autumn and forms the basis for market discussions during the annual session of the Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry. As well as providing an overview of the changing state of markets, the review sets out to understand the forces that are shaping the timber market and to examine future directions. Underlying all of this is a comprehensive database that provides a unique historical perspective. A core part of the UNECE/FAO forest and timber programme from the early 1950s has also been the publication of long-term forest sector outlook studies. The latest European Forest Sector Outlook Study (EFSOS II) comprises scenarios addressing main policy issues on climate change mitigation, wood energy promotion, biodiversity preservation and industrial innovation for the period 2010-2030. EFSOS II is being used in many circles as a basis for policy formulation and analysis. This brief introduction can give you only a flavour of the work that the UNECE/FAO Forestry & Timber undertakes. https://democracynow.org - Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt is again facing a slew of ethics and spending scandals amid mounting calls for his resignation. On Thursday, The Washington Post reported Pruitt enlisted members of his $3.5 million security detail to pick up his dry cleaning and search for his favorite skin moisturizing lotion, even though federal rules prohibit public officials from receiving gifts from subordinates, including unpaid services. Meanwhile, Pruitt is continuing to radically reshape the EPA. The New York Times reports today the EPA has given the chemical industry a big victory by scaling back the way the federal government determines health and safety risks associated with the most dangerous chemicals on the market. Pruitt has also been accused of radically reshaping the EPA rulemaking process and weakening Obama administration efforts to tighten fuel economy standards. Topic: "The Future of Biofuels: A Business Perspective" Speaker: David L. Godwin. Vice President, Minerals and Energy Products, Weyerhaeuser This lecture will discuss and frame the cellulosic biofuels business opportunity and present some practical solutions to some of the critical path elements. The renewable fuel mandates at both the state and federal level have created the demand for green energy. Research and pilot testing are taking place all over the world and many people in both the science and business community believe the time of commercially available biofuels is close at hand. But, the success and commercialization of biofuels will only be achieved when solutions address both the public concern associated with environmental impacts and create a reasonable economic return for the potential large capital investments.

Send your letter to government at: http://www.BCForestMovement.com Please sign our petition at: http://www.AncientForestPetition.com About 500 people in a diverse crowd of conservationists, forestry workers, First Nations, business owners, and union members showed up today in the heavy rain in Victoria for a rally organized by the Ancient Forest Alliance. Despite the morning downpour, spirits were high, and the clouds parted as the protesters marched their way towards the BC Legislative buildings from Centennial Square. The Ancient Forest Alliance is calling on the BC Liberal government and the NDP opposition commit to a Provincial Old-Growth Plan that will protect BC's endangered old-growth forests and ensure sustainable, value-added second-growth forestry jobs -- and finally bring an end to BC's "War in the Woods". Over 3700 people have sent messages so far to the BC Liberal government and NDP Opposition to protect old-growth forests and ensure sustainable second-growth forestry through the organization's website: www.BCForestMovement.com "With an election coming up, now is the time for BC's politicians to commit to protecting our endangered old-growth forests, to ensure sustainable second-growth forestry, to end the export of raw logs to foreign mills, and to implement First Nations land use plans," stated Ken Wu, the AFA's executive director. "The status quo of liquidating the biggest, best old-growth stands and exporting massive amounts of raw logs abroad is destroying ecosystems, jobs, and communities. Now, of all times, BC's politicians must develop some wisdom, foresight, and a backbone for a sustainable forestry overhaul in this province. No politician or party will escape scrutiny on their forestry agenda this electoral season, we'll see to that." Speakers included: · Robert Morales -- Chief Treaty Negotiator, Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group · Joe Martin -- Tla-o-qui-aht canoe carver, Band Councillor, original Meares Island protest organizer · Gisele Martin -- Tla-o-qui-aht business operator and cultural educator · Jon Cash -- Vice-President, Chamber of Commerce of Port Renfrew · Arnold Bercov -- President, Pulp, Paper, and Woodworkers of Canada (PPWC) union -- Local 8 · Eric Hamilton-Smith -- Campaigns Officer, BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU) · Ken James -- President, Youbou TimberLess Society · Valerie Langer --BC Forest Campaign Director, ForestEthics · Jens Wieting -- Coastal Forest Campaigner, Sierra Club of BC · Vicky Husband -- BC Conservationist, Order of BC and Canada recipient · TJ Watt -- Forest Campaigner, Ancient Forest Alliance · Ken Wu -- Executive Director, Ancient Forest Alliance

Unfortunately the NDP's forestry platform makes no mention of protecting old-growth forests, but instead promotes the status quo of "planting more trees" (tree plantations do not support the endangered species, tourism, and climate like old-growth forests do) and the Council Of Forest Industry's president thinks they have a fine plan! COFI is the industry trade association comprised of many of the largest old-growth logging corporations in BC. Send your LETTER to BC's politicians at http://www.BCForestMovement.com Please SIGN our PETITION at http://www.AncientForestPetition.com Conservationists are calling for much stronger, comprehensive old-growth protection policies in BC after having discovered a major logging threat to Canada's most famous old-growth forest, Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. Conservationists came across survey tape marked "Falling Boundary" and "Road Location" in an old-growth Douglas fir and hemlock forest only 300 meters from the park boundary last week. See photos and a map (based on some GPS points) at: http://www.ancientforestalliance.org/photos.php?gID=24 The planned cutblock by Island Timberlands is about 40 hectares and lies within a formerly protected Ungulate (deer) Winter Range. It lies on the southwest facing slope of Mt. Horne on the ridge above the park and highway that millions of tourists pass through each year. Logging the area would further fragment the forest that is contiguous with the small park, destroying an important wildlife corridor from mountain ridge to valley bottom in an area that conservationists once hoped the park could include for the deer winter range. The logging would also threaten eco-tourism in the area, by destroying a major section of the popular hiking trail, the Mt. Horne Loop Trail, which the cutblock overlaps. The Ancient Forest Alliance is calling on the BC Liberals and NDP to commit to a provincial plan to protect the province's old-growth forests, to ensure sustainable second-growth forestry, and to end the export of raw, unprocessed logs to foreign mills. For private lands, the organization is calling for a provincial "park acquisition fund" of $40 million/year to purchase endangered ecosystems on private land for protection, similar to the park acquisition funds of various regional districts, like the Capital Regional District around Victoria.

November 24, 2014 -- NAZ Today reports that 600,000 acres of Northern Arizona forest are getting restored in the near future. The U.S. Forest Service has implemented a plan that will thin and treat 75% of the 600,000 acres over the next ten years by using prescribed fires to bring the forest back to its natural state. The project, that is believed to be the single largest restoration project in the nation, will improve close to 50% of impaired watersheds while also creating many forest related jobs to the community. Preservation of the forest's most historic trees is high on the priority list, making many loggers worry about staying in business. However, the forest service says they are working with local logging companies to provide a more flexible framework for how, when and why these trees should be cut.

Our mission statement is: "Building lasting relationships with our partners and employees while serving the recreational and travel community. Our core values shall be based on Honesty and Integrity and Service to the Community." RV World provides Yuma residents and non-residents alike with unsurpassed excellence in sales, service, and parts. Our business philosophy differs from most of our competition as we put a strong emphasis on customer service. We strive to make your experience at our dealership a positive and memorable one. Whether you are visiting for parts, sales or service, it is our goal to satisfy each and every customer, each and every time, without fail. This commitment to customer service and satisfaction has been one of our founding principles since Bill and Donalyn Green opened for business in 1991. Bill Green is one of the pioneers of the RV industry. Bill started working in the RV industry in 1966 and in over 50 years in the industry, he has worked hand in hand with most RV manufacturers, suppliers and distributors. In 1991, Bill took his vast knowledge of the RV industry, left the San Diego area and opened a small 2 acre RV dealership here in Yuma. The plan was for Bill and his wife of 59 years Donalyn to sell trailers in the winter and semi-retire, enjoying their summers off. Word of RV World philosophy of customer service excellence quickly spread via word of mouth, and the amount of referral and repeat business soon made it clear that semi retirement was not an option. Late in 1991 Bill and Donalyn's son, Mike joined the family business and helped his parents operate it. By 1996, the small 2 acre facility had expanded to 18 acres and there are currently over 60 year round, full time employees here at RV World. Most of the employees at RV World have worked here for over 10 years, and many as long as 20 years. Our service manager, Bob Smith, has been at RV World since its inception in 1991. Although the business has expanded, the small business philosophy remains the same and has led to many honors, awards and distinctions in the last 24 years. RV World now maintains an inventory of over 400 new and used RVs, all at one location here in Yuma. RV World award winning service and parts departments are open year round and capable of performing nearly any repair. Employees in parts, service and sales are factory trained and the training is both challenging and on going. As the RV Industry grows and changes, rest assured RV World will be here to help you every step of the way.
