New Obtala chair focused on scaling up forestry business

10:15
It’s been a busy week for Africa-focused agriculture and timber company Obtala Resources PLC (LON:OBT) as non-executive director Miles Pelham has been elevated to the position of non-executive chairman. The firm also released a broad strategic plan to grow the Africa-based agriculture, forestry and retail group, and agreed to terms for a full settlement of US$900,000 from Basic Materials Limited. New chairman Pelham tells Proactive the company has had to “adapt and move with the times” meaning it is now “strongly focused on forestry and agriculture, which we feel is a very promising sector to be in”. Francesco Scolaro has stepped down as executive chairman, and Pelham says his key aim is to expand revenue, by “scaling up a forestry business that is currently producing 5% of its potential to 50% potential to 80%”.

How to Fight Forest Fires

14:35
We tagged along with a squad of wilderness firefighters from the Oregonian boonies as they work to prevent their hometown from being torched to ashes like the super inflammable tinderbox that surrounds them on all sides. Check out more VICE Documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries Whenever someone at our office bitches about being overworked, our stock response is "Beats digging ditches." While the express intention of the statement is usually not-so-supportive, we think it's a healthy reminder that at the end of the day, we are all basically professional emailers and should be thankful for such. The wildland firefighters who work for Grayback Forestry in Southern Oregon have no such motivational adages because their job is actually digging ditches. Around active forest fires. On the sides of mountains. You can't even bitch at these guys for having cushy government pensions to fall back on when they get older, because they're all private-sector contractors. Which means if they aren't out fighting forest fires or doing preventative forestry on unburned woods (basically extreme landscaping), they are losing money. They are literally the hardest working men in tree business. We spent a few days following a crew of Grayback forest-firefighters walk up the sides of what most people would consider a cliff to chop down underbrush in preparation for a controlled burn. This is what they like to call "project work," aka the light stuff in between fires, and yet it was still some of the hardest most least-rewarding work we have ever tried to do in our lives. Unless you consider 12-hour-plus shifts of backbreaking labor, virtually zero outside recognition, and occasional accusations of being shills for the timber industry rewards. Which we do not. Connecting Organisations to Forest Communities - CLevel Update 2013

03:23
Features 2 Community Carbon projects where communities are being financed to protect forests through Carbon Balanced business programmes run by CLevel. Limay, Northern Nicaragua, and Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, North East India. Both projects generate carbon ecosystem credits under the holistic Plan Vivo standard and network. Hi, I'm Daren Howarth from CLevel and I'm here to give you a brief update on our community carbon projects. We are continuing to work with people in places like Nicaragua, Nepal and Northern India; all part of a growing network that is Plan Vivo. If you want more information on Plan Vivo as a network, take a look at the video on our website that we made recently to support the growth of this network. So here's an introduction to two of the carbon project. Limay community carbon is in its fifth year now. It's located in the north of Nicaragua. Deforestation of the native forest has affected both the ecology and the economy of Limay. Nurseries have been set up, native tree seeds have been collected stored and thousands of trees have been planted out. 500,000 trees have now been planted. These trees will sequester over 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide out of the earth's atmosphere. By Carbon Balancing, over £250,000 has now been paid into the Limay community by project partners. In 2013 the plan is to plant a further 370,000 trees and bring a further 60 farmer families into the program. This will happen if organisations like yours continue to compensate for you carbon emissions from flights, from energy, from transport, by investing Limay's forests and communities. 2013 also sees the first issuance of common ecosystem credits from a brand new Plan Vivo project. This is called Khasi Hills Community REDD project. The project is situated in the North-east Indian states of Meghalaya. This is a place where forest still held sacred by parts of the community. It's one of the wettest parts of the world. Meghalaya literally means abode of the clouds, in Sanskrit. The very first organisations are now going through the process of becoming Carbon Balanced through this exciting project in India, which is helping reduce pressure on existing forests and help those forests regenerate. If you know other organisations, who don't just want to manage their carbon, but are interested in playing a key pivotal role, in a major forest conservation project, the very first project of its kind in India, then please get in touch. Thanks again for working with us and with these forest communities.

How to Get Started Growing and Selling Medicinal Herbs

05:56
Robert Eidus, Owner of Eagle Feather Organic Farm, gives advice on how to begin growing and selling forest medicinal herbs. Number one: "Don't cut down your trees." We look at stratification - the best method for increasing ginseng's propagation rate. We follow up with the importance of having a business plan before attempting to supplement income through forest-based medicinal plant production, and we finish with a few bits of advice on cutting costs. Plastic pots can often be obtained for free from other growers or nurseries and leaves can be gathered in the fall once they're put out for trash collection. However, be careful of collecting any invasive species that may be tossed in with the leaf pile. Leaves contribute to forest soil and can be combined with other organic additives and composted to be used in raised beds and for potted plants.

European forestry innovation: towards a green economy

12:10
On the occasion of European Forest Week and Metsä2013 Joint session of the ECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission, this video highlights the importance of sustainable forestry for the future of the UNECE region and greening the economy. The UNECE/FAO Forestry & Timber Section has served as a trusted source of information, data and analysis about the forest sector in the UNECE region for more than 60 years. It also provides a forum for policy discussion about major issues that affect the forest sector. The section is unique in that it is a joint UNECE/FAO secretariat, servicing the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission and working closely with other members of the United Nations family and with country stakeholders. It operates to a mandate agreed by the 56 countries, which together comprise the UNECE region, stretching from North America to the Russian Federation and Central Asia. Its priorities and activities are presented in its Strategic Plan. Working with FAO, the Section plays a pivotal role in the regular assessment of the state of forests in the pan-European region and contributes to the periodic global Forest Resources Assessment . In addition, the section's work with Forest Europe allows a regular critical assessment of the health and sustainability of Europe's forests, using criteria and indicators drawn up by the countries active in the Forest Europe process. The results are published in the State of Europe's Forests report. The Section is also active in the field of forest policies and institutions, recognized as an integral part of sustainable forest management. These activities include information collection, analysis and dissemination, monitoring of developments, analysis of trends and capacity building. The Section addresses important cross-sectoral aspects of relevance to the forest sector, notably related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, bioenergy, biodiversity, land use, water and agriculture. For instance, the Section works to improve the knowledge and understanding of wood energy sources and uses, in particular by collecting data on wood energy in member countries through the Joint Wood Energy Enquiry, and promotes the sustainable use of wood for energy. The Section's work compiling market and, to a lesser extent, price data for forest products throughout the region, feeds into the prestigious Forest Products Annual Market Review, which appears every autumn and forms the basis for market discussions during the annual session of the Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry. As well as providing an overview of the changing state of markets, the review sets out to understand the forces that are shaping the timber market and to examine future directions. Underlying all of this is a comprehensive database that provides a unique historical perspective. A core part of the UNECE/FAO forest and timber programme from the early 1950s has also been the publication of long-term forest sector outlook studies. The latest European Forest Sector Outlook Study (EFSOS II) comprises scenarios addressing main policy issues on climate change mitigation, wood energy promotion, biodiversity preservation and industrial innovation for the period 2010-2030. EFSOS II is being used in many circles as a basis for policy formulation and analysis. This brief introduction can give you only a flavour of the work that the UNECE/FAO Forestry & Timber undertakes. 🇮🇷 🇺🇸 What is US hoping to achieve by reimposing sanctions on Iran? | Counting the Cost

25:01
This week, the United States reimposed the first round of economic sanctions on Iran, in an anticipated move following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw his country from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). More US sanctions targeting Iran's oil and gas industry are due to begin in November. But what is Washington hoping to achieve by reinstating the sanctions that were lifted when it signed along with other world powers the JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2015? "The policy is not regime change, but we definitely want to put maximum pressure on this government," John Bolton, the US national security adviser, told Fox News earlier this week. "And it's not just to come back to discuss fixing a deal that's basically not fixable, dealing with nuclear weapons aspect. We want to see a much broader retreat by Iran from their support for international terrorism, their belligerent military activity in the Middle East and their ballistic missile nuclear-related programme." In a Twitter post on August 7, Trump said that the move to reimpose sanctions meant that "anyone doing business with Iran will not be doing business with the United States". In a bid to protect Europe's companies doing business with Tehran, the European Union, which remains in the deal with Iran along with China and Russia, has taken the unusual step of issuing a blocking statute that says firms from the continent should ignore US sanctions. Still, car companies, drug manufacturers and many other industry giants are leaving Iran. "If a company does business with the US and then does business with Iran, the US can cut those companies out of the US market, which is a much more important economic one", says Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane, reporting from from Washington, DC. "US officials say they will be watching closely and they'll be aggressively enforcing sanctions that are put in place." The sanctions will hit the Iranian economy very hard, according to Andreas Schweitzer, the managing director of Arjan Capital. "One should take President Trump by his word that he intends what he's doing here," he says. "You can also see what the damage is doing to the Iranian economy. The rial has devalued dramatically, which is not only a factor of the sanctions, but also the way the central bank has handled the foreign exchange situation - they're trying to get it under control ... there's high unemployment, foreign companies leaving, so the morale is quite bad and the economy also." China, India and Turkey have said they are not willing to entirely cut off business with Iran, "so the sanctions will mostly affect European businesses", notes Schweitzer. "Those with the greatest amount of risk exposure to the US economy are advised to leave ... So, it really depends on your exposure to the US economy. If you don't have any, Iran is an opportunity. If you have a lot of exposure to the US, then business in Iran is a risk." The second phase of US sanctions, which takes effect on November 5, is aimed at blocking Iran's vital oil sales, which drive much of the country's economic growth. "Trump wants to bring Iranian oil exports to nil, but that won't happen because the Chinese and Indians will buy, and these are already very large buyers," says Schweitzer. "[Sanctions] waivers will probably not happen, they haven't happened in the past and I don't see why they'd happen now. The situation will be back to where we were in 2010-2012, so the Iranians will have to adjust again to the same measures they've taken then. The Iranians are also well trained in handling sanctions." But the return of sanctions has increased tensions inside Iran, where in recent days protests have occurred over the plummeting currency, high unemployment and soaring prices. However, "despite the hardships, some Iranians are buying up gold, and ironically, US dollars to keep their savings safe from the impact of American sanctions", Al Jazeera's Zein Basravi reports from Tehran. This short film provides valuable insight for the European timber industry into how FLEGT licenses will assist them in complying with the new European Union Timber Regulation. The first FLEGT licenses should be issued within the coming year, and are expected to deliver significant quantities of verified legal timber across a wide range of products. With the robust legality assurance system guaranteed by FLEGT, these licenses could save importers time and money. http://www.fao.org/forestry/eu-flegt/en/

CED_News Promoting communicating on VPAFELGT to businesses in Vietnam on July 9th, 2014

02:27
Website: http://en.flegtvpa.com/ On 9 July 2014, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), in partnership with Center for Education and Development (CED), organized a training workshop for the media on Forest Law Enforcement Governance and trade (FLEGT) and Voluntarily Partnership Agreement (VPA). EU markets account for 30% of the total value of the timber exports market from Vietnam and now it has placed new regulations requiring that all timber and timber products entering EU markets are produced from legal sources as part of FLEGT plan. Producing countries, such as Vietnam will have to enter the VPA with the EU as part of the FLEGT action plan. Under which, Vietnamese timber export companies only can export legal timbers and timber products to the EU in accordance with Vietnamese laws and regulations, and as the process and steps set out in VPA. However, according to an assessment conducted by CED in April, after interviews with 81 businesses and related stakeholders, including more than 60 Vietnamese timber processing businesses, only 57% of them had heard about FLEGT VPA, and 75% of them do not know its contents. It is noted that 73% of these enterprises are producing indoor and outdoor furniture and, exports to EU markets account for 51% of their total export value.

Scrap Post-Brexit Immigration Targets Says The CBI!

05:13
PLEASE SUPPORT MY YOUTUBE WORK ON PATREON: http://bit.ly/2oUVQfm FACEBOOK: @JeffTaylorBrexit The Confederation of British Industry says that immigration targets should be scrapped after the UK leaves the EU. LIKE THIS? PLEASE SHARE IT using the url - https://youtu.be/cd6nzlpZxsU *SUBSCRIBE* to Jeff Taylor Here: https://goo.gl/NyzUPo How to *SUPERCHARGE* your YouTube videos - start for FREE: http://bit.ly/2vbl9z2 The CBI wants EU nationals to be treated differently to other nationals from around the world post-Brexit. The business group says that it would be 'entirely unworkable' to use the current non-EU immigration system to deal with EU immigration, calling it "highly complex, time-consuming and expensive, particularly for small businesses". What the CBI wants to see is a move away from limiting net migration to the tens of thousands onto a system where the focus is placed on the positive benefit they bring to the UK economy. EU citizens could be issued with visas, says the CBI, with their visit limited to three months "unless they can prove that they are working, studying or are self-sufficient". This would, I think, in effect keep the borders just about open for EU nationals. And why do I say that? Because this CBI proposal sounds very much like EU Directive 2004/38/EC, which seems to be one of the very few, if only directive, that the UK does NOT slavishly follow. This Directive says that any EU citizen can go to any other EU state for up to three months unchallenged, but might then have to register. And then they either have to be employed, self-employed or not a burden on the host state, including having health insurance. So, as far as I can see, the CBI wants the UK to treat EU citizens in the way the EU lays down but the UK has always ignored. But because we have, it seems, never exercised our national rights regarding this directive, it will look sort of like tightening immigration rules up, when it actually probably isn't. And Brexit is now hitting football, says the Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino. He is blaming the club's lack of signings and the rising costs of the club's new 62,000 seat stadium on the UK's exit from the EU with the football ground price tag having, he said, risen from £400 million to the £1 billion mark. What are they doing, importing a whole gold plated stadium? Land and all? Anyway, all the money that's pumped into UK football doesn't seem to helped the four UK national teams' world cup aspirations over the last few decades, does it? Now, in a piece for the BBC Sir John Curtice, Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University, says that there is a Brexit age divide with those over 45 favouring Leave and those under 45 favouring Remain. Generally he says that the younger people are the more likely they are to favour Remain, and vice versa. Overall the Remain/Leave divide is relatively stable, with the three latest polls putting Remain on 52% and Leave on 48% - but we all now know that we should treat these polls with a very healthy disrespect. The Office for National Statistics GDP report for the second quarter of 2018 shows an increase of 0.4%. "The pick-up in Quarter 2 reflects, to some extent, consumers taking advantage of the warm weather and World Cup celebrations." Says the ONS. But, our trade deficit widened by £4.7 billion to £8.6 billion in Quarter 2 says the ONS. However: "The total UK trade deficit (goods and services) narrowed £6.2 billion to £25.0 billion in the 12 months to June 2018. The improvement was driven by both exports of goods and services increasing by more than their respective imports." The ONS reports. So, down on the quarter but up on the year overall. Anyway, tell us what you think by leaving a comment below. Thank you for watching. Sustainable Palm oil production

05:12
More here: http://wwf.panda.org/palmoil Most palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia on land that was once thriving rainforest. As global demand grows, more and more forests are being cleared. In areas such as Borneo and Sumatra, rich in biodiversity, deforestation can be catastrophic. Endangered species including orang-utans, tigers, elephants and rhinos are losing critical habitats, pushing them toward extinction. In 2004, WWF helped set up the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a group that includes every link in the global supply chain, from growers and processors, to food companies and retailers and investors. With the RSPO, WWF developed a set of international standards for responsible palm oil production. Producers that show they meet these criteria are able to sell certified sustainable palm oil. That means companies that use it in their lipstick, soap, margarine or whatever else can make the same guarantee to their customers. Certified sustainable palm oil cannot be grown in place of primary forest or in important conservation areas. Growers have to use the best growing practices to keep soil and water supplies healthy, and to reduce pollution and carbon emissions. They also need to pay a decent wage and respect the rights of workers and communities. The first certified sustainable palm oil came on to the market in September 2008. Today, about 6.4% of all palm oil is certified sustainable. By looking out for CSPO, the label for sustainable palm oill, you'll be able to buy these products safe in the knowledge that you're not contributing to the destruction of the rainforests. RID 3108

Safety in the Forest Industry

05:16
B. Routley: I listen to this debate, and we really haven't come very far from the Dirty '30s, when forest workers used to get killed and they would prop them up beside a stump and tell the rest of the crew: "Just work on. Just carry on. Everything's fine. It's just the cost of doing business." Workers had to fight over the years. In fact, part of the reason there is a union movement in British Columbia was because workers were getting killed on the job over and over and over again. Employers weren't acting on behalf of those workers and their families, so they had to fight. They had to form unions to prevent that kind of behaviour, where it was okay to prop a friend up against a stump. I've talked to the old-timers that actually had that happen to them. I've been through the experience myself in the forest industry. I remember prior to the Westray bill what happened when I was the safety chairman at the Youbou mill, and 550 people worked there. Young Patrick Krechmire, 18 years old — he might as well have been left a huge, big mousetrap. It was the incompetence and negligence of that company. There was a new tray system in the veneer plant. We had written orders that said: "Make sure you put in lockout procedures and train the workers on the new procedures." You know what they did instead? They sped up production. They got the job done adequately enough to be able to crank up production on Monday morning, and they slapped it together. That 18-year-old man went in there, and all he did was touch a little piece the size of a pencil and down came 2½ tonnes and crushed the life out of that young man. Right there was an example of absolute negligence. Then I went through it again just a few years ago with Ted Gramlich. We had the forest industry in British Columbia deciding they needed to save a few dollars. We've got sympathetic administration, and that's what I'm hearing over on the other side of the table. It's sympathetic administration playing their violin music of: "It's all okay. We're sure the employers are taking care of things. We've got WorkSafe B.C. Oh, we happened to cut a whole bunch of the regulations, but we've got WorkSafe B.C. on the job." They just happen to fail to do any of the things necessary to be able to hold people accountable in British Columbia. It is totally unacceptable to working people to see the behaviour that goes on, the lack of concern. I'm talking negligence. [1145] There are safe employers. I've seen them myself. But I've also seen this. When the Westray bill came in, you know what happened? I saw a manager of a sawmill who had the audacity, at one time, to go down and tell his crew: "Safety isn't No. 1. Production is No. 1, and that'll pay for No. 2, which is safety." He actually said that to a crew, one of the mills right here on Vancouver Island. But he had a whole new attitude when he was told by his CEO: "You could go to jail. There's new legislation. There's a new sheriff in town." Well, guess what. We found out the new sheriff is a toothless wonder. In British Columbia we haven't had a single charge of anybody. And it's worse than that. The penalty paid in B.C.'s role, on average in 2012, for a death was less than $22,000. In a report by WorkSafe B.C., out of 149 worker deaths accepted for compensation payments in 2012, six prompted fines — for a total of less than $129,000. When I think of all of the people that I have seen die.... Ted Gramlich, that faller.... Imagine a faller being sent up to an area to fall trees for heli-logging. But he was above the fog, and when the tree kicked back and crushed him, he was lying there bleeding, his leg crushed beyond belief. He was bleeding. That man probably would have lived if the contractor would have had a proper safety plan. No safety plan. They hadn't even thought about the possibility that this man could get hurt and that then you would need a helicopter to get him out of there. No plan. We need this kind of action. We need real action in British Columbia, not a sympathetic administration like we've got over there.

Remsoft Co-CEO Andrea Feunekes on Operational Planning

05:45
Remsoft's Operational Planning solution tackles the complex scheduling challenges encountered by forestry companies at the point of harvesting - scheduling crews to the right areas to produce the right logs at the right time, allocating the right logs to the right mills, and ensuring mill demands and contract commitments are met. This is a complex "push and pull" value chain with lots of moving parts. Striking the balance between supply and demand while meeting all the business objectives and constraints is an incredibly difficult planning process. "The benefits of using optimization technology rather than relying on rote planning or a basic spreadsheet can be measured in the millions of dollars to a company's bottom line," says Andrea Feunekes, co-founder and Co-CEO, Remsoft. "It can also help decrease an organization's overall environmental footprint, reducing waste, lowering the amount of energy used in transporting wood to manufacturing facilities and other benefits."

This Farm of the Future Uses No Soil and 95% Less Water

Watch the next episode about San Francisco becoming a zero waste city: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3OA1s8-SI&list=UUJsSEDFFnMFvW9JWU6XUn0Q As urban populations continue to rise, innovators are looking beyond traditional farming as a way to feed everyone while having less impact on our land and water resources. Vertical farming is one solution that's been implemented around the world. Vertical farms produce crops in stacked layers, often in controlled environments such as those built by AeroFarms in Newark, New Jersey. AeroFarms grows a variety of leafy salad greens using a process called "aeroponics," which relies on air and mist. AeroFarms' crops are grown entirely indoors using a reusable cloth medium made from recycled plastics. In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world. Protecting Nature, Jobs and Traditions in the Northern Forest

04:47
Upstate New York’s Tug Hill region, also known as Tug Hill Plateau, is known for its timber industry, snowfall and traditional northern forest outdoor recreational opportunities. Nestled within Tug Hill is the Town of Redfield—one of the many communities that depend on the area’s working forest landscape for economic support. In 2017, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and The Conservation Fund protected the 3,236-acre Kendall property—located in Redfield and Orwell, a large property identified as a priority in the NYS Open Space Plan. Protection of Kendall Forest ensures ongoing timber resource production, safeguards water quality of the environmentally sensitive and economically important Salmon River and allows for continued public access to recreational opportunities, such as hunting and snowmobiling.
