This laboratory study measured the effect of vegetable juice extracts from 34 common vegetables against eight types of cancer - stomach, pancreas, breast, prostate, lung, kidney, medulloblastoma (brain cancer at the base of the skull), and glioblastoma (brain cancer of supportive tissue). The cancer cells were incubated for 48 hours in the absence or presence of the vegetable juice extract (166mg raw vegetables per ml). Cell viability was measured by evaluating the mitochondrial activity of treated cells using the WST-1 assay, with metabolically active cells monitored every minute for 30 min at 37° C on a SpectraMax Plus reader. The most effective antiproliferative vegetable extracts (100% inhibitory effect) were: • Brain cancer (Glioblastoma - brain cancer of supportive tissue) - garlic, leak, brussels sprouts, and beetroot • Brain cancer (Medulloblastoma - brain cancer at the base of the skull) - garlic, leak, green onion, brussels sprouts, and broccoli • Breast cancer - garlic, leak, green onion, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower • Kidney cancer - leak • Lung cancer - garlic, leak, green onion, and brussels sprouts • Pancreatic carcinoma - garlic, leak, and brussels sprouts • Prostate cancer - garlic and brussels sprouts • Stomach cancer - garlic, leak, green onion, yellow onion, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, curly cabbage, cabbage, and broccoli Overall, the number one antiproliferative vegetable was garlic. It had an 100% inhibitory effect on seven out of eight types of cancer. The most effective antiproliferative vegetable extracts, as defined as an inhibitory effect of at least 50% on all cancer cell lines, in alphabetical order, were brussels sprouts, cabbage, curly cabbage, garlic, green onion, kale, leek, and spinach. Highly effective antiproliferative vegetable extracts, as defined as an inhibitory effect of at least 50% on four or more cancer cell types, in alphabetical order, were asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, cauliflower, fiddlehead, green bean, radish, red cabbage, rutabega, and yellow onion. As noted in the study, oxidative stress is now recognized as a major factor associated with the development of cancer. While antioxidant activity is involved in cancer prevention at the initiation stage, antiproliferative activity targets cancer cells at the promotion and progression stages. The study found that the antiproliferative activity of the vegetable extracts were independent of their antioxidant properties. One of the limitations acknowledged by the study was the absence of water-insoluble molecules such as lycopene found in tomatoes and β-carotene found in carrots, which could have underestimated their whole antioxident and antiproliferative activities. The study notes that "The majority of the vegetable extracts tested in this study, including vegetables that are commonly consumed in Western countries such as potato, carrot, lettuce and tomato, had little effect on the proliferation of the tumour cell lines." The study concludes that "a diversified diet, containing several distinct classes of vegetables (and hence of phytochemicals) is essential for effective prevention of cancer." And "...the inclusion of cruciferous and Allium vegetables in the diet is essential for effective dietary-based chemopreventive (anti-cancer) strategies."
