Just over four weeks ago I went to my doctors for my six monthly check up and my blood pressure was higher than ever - 185 over 90. The doctor said I should increase my medication immediately. Now I do not like taking drugs in the first place and so I convinced my doctor to give me a four weeks reprieve. If I could improve things in this time then the medication would stay as it is. So I went away, not having any idea of how I was going to get my blood pressure reduced. Of course I could climb on my exercise bike more often, cut out the beer and wine, and attempt to lose a significant amount of weight, but to make a significant improvement in four weeks would take some doing (plus the fact that I love my beer and wine!) Don't get me wrong, I strongly believe exercise, diet, and maintaining a reasonable weight are extremely important, not only with regards to blood pressure, but for other health issues as well. But I decided to do some research and find out if there was some other form of natural treatment for hypertension and I was shocked to find out that slowing down your breathing can greatly help in the control of high blood pressure. This fact was backed up by further research. Apparently slower breathing has a number of effects, one of which is a chemical effect which can have a significant effect on blood pressure. When stressed we tend to breathe quicker and more shallow, and sometimes even hold our breath without being aware of it. This will make our blood more acidic by unbalancing the levels of gases in our system. Blood from the upper body returns via the superior vena cava, blood from the lower body returns via the inferior vena cava. The rate of venous return is determined by two factors: the pressure gradient between venous pressure and right atrial pressure; and venous resistance. A decrease in right atrial pressure leads to an increase in venous return, and vice versa. Breathing is one of the mechanisms that facilitate venous return. This is known as thoracic pump, or respiratory pump. During inspiration, the diaphragm moves down, expanding the thoracic cavity, resulting in a decreased intra-thoracic pressure and a subsequent expansion of the lungs. Part of this change in pressure is transmitted across the walls of the heart, lowering right atrial pressure and thus facilitating venous return. Another aspect of the diaphragmatic descent is the concomitant increase in abdominal pressure. As the inferior vena cava passes through both abdominal and thoracic cavities, an increase in abdominal pressure together with a decrease in thoracic pressure squeeze the blood upward - toward the heart. On the other hand, left ventricular stroke volume is decreased during inspiration. This is because the expansion of the lungs causes pulmonary blood volume to increase and the blood flow from the lungs to the left atrium to decrease. During expiration, the diaphragm moves up, the pressure in the thoracic cavity reverses. Venous return decreases. Pulmonary blood vessels shrink pumping more blood through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium. Stroke volume increases as a result. Very high blood pressures can also cause permanent damage to one's vision. The signs of high blood pressure, or hypertension, are often so subtle as to appear nonexistent. When they do manifest, the most conspicuous signs of high blood pressure are dizziness, blurry vision, breathing problems, and a pounding pulse. Less clear symptoms include headaches, nose bleeds, and nausea. Most individuals with early-stage hypertension don't experience noticeable or worrisome symptoms, although some do. Potentially life-threatening levels of high blood pressure typically are reflected in one or more of the aforementioned symptoms. Individuals who don't yet experience constant, severe blood pressure levels may not realize their condition, due to subtle or nonexistent symptoms. What symptoms do manifest may be difficult to interpret as signs of high blood pressure. Such individuals may experience an increase in headaches, for example, or have more nose bleeds. Many cases of high blood pressure—cases that would otherwise go undetected—are discovered during a routine doctor's visit. Without routinely checking one's blood pressure, hypertension problems might not become apparent until they reach severe levels. If for some reason a visit to a doctor is problematic, many grocery stores feature stations where individuals can check their blood pressure for free or for a nominal fee. These stations are able to give a general idea of one's blood pressure, but their readings aren't nearly as accurate as at a doctor's office. Certain demographics should be extra vigilant about detecting signs of high blood pressure. Blood pressure is affected by age, which means that as individuals get older, they should accordingly take more measures to regulate and monitor blood pressure. Blood pressure is also affected by being overweight, and stress also can cause blood pressure to rise. According to the American Society for Reproductive Practitioners, The use of assistive technologies, such as in-vitro fertilization, during the conception process also raises the risk of high blood pressure in a pregnant woman. 1. Monitor your salt intake During pregnancy, you should retain a check on your salt intake to keep your blood pressure under control. • Do not add too much salt to food when cooking. Use herbs and spices instead to add flavor to your dish. • Avoid processed foods, fast foods, and sports drinks, which are high in sodium, even if they have no salty taste. • Avoid all canned foods because they are often high in sodium. 2. Genetics, diet and age all play a role but one thing that really gets your pumping heart heart pumping is stress. My dad had been retrenched many times and although he seemed physically healthy he was under immense emotional distress. Middle aged depressed man. How does that affect the heart? Through the fight or flight response. We are the descendants of cavemen caveman who were in constant threat of being eaten by a hungry tiger or uncle. Those who survived were able to do two things really well: fight or flight. Caveman running Or in my ancestors case flight! In today’s world there may be no saber tooth tiger, just a saber-toothed boss. Angry boss No death threat, just a dead line. Yet the body responds to an emotional threat as if it were a physical threat. Adrenaline pumps through the body, the heart speeds up to get blood to the muscles where it’s needed to fight or flight. The blood thickens to avoid excessive bleeding. That’s right, the brain is expecting a physical injury. A racing heart and thickened blood puts strain on the arteries, strained arteries producing high blood pressure and the threat of a heart attack. If you’re constantly under pressure so is your heart. So what can you do about it? Medication, lowering your salt in take, quitting smoking and exercising all help. Certainly my dad would have benefited from counseling to deal with his feelings of rejection. But there is something else. Breathe. Breathing image I know how did you survive this long without me? Actually it’s slow, deep breathing. A study on 20 000 Group of Japanese adults found that just 30 seconds of slow, deep breathing significantly reduced the blood pressure of people with both normal and high blood pressure. When we’re stressed, we breathe fast and shallow. Fast, shallow breathing is like an accelerator, fast shallow breathing paired with reving dial speeding up your heart rate, providing an immediate increase of oxygen to the muscles for fight or flight. Slow, deep breathing is like a break, slowing down your heart rate slow breathing pared with reduced rev on dial and releasing nitric oxide which dilates the blood vessels and reduces blood pressure. How do you do it? Put your hand on your tummy. As you breathe in tummy expands. This means the oxygen is going deep into your lungs. As you breathe out tummy goes in. Now breathe in for the count of two and out for the count of four while internally saying the word “calm” on the out breath. The key is to slow down your breathing to less than ten breaths a minute. There’s also healthy dose of oxygen, and approximately 1% is other gasses. This gas mixture works great for humans when they are on land, and the atmospheric pressure isn’t too high or low. But when scuba diving, especially deep diving, regular old atmospheric air doesn’t work so well. You see, as you dive deeper and deeper, the ambient pressure around you starts to increase considerably. And, as you breathe from the scuba equipment, your lungs automatically equalize and become more pressurized to match its surroundings. But the increased pressure in your lungs can force nitrogen to dissolve into your bloodstream. This is why divers have to surface so slowly. The nitrogen needs to leave body’s tissues and bloodstream in a slow controlled manner. If a diver tries to surface too quickly, the dissolved nitrogen comes out of solution inside the body in the form of bubbles. These nitrogen bubbles can cause many symptoms; most commonly joint pain and itchy rashsy skin. This is known as Decompression Sickness, or The Bends, and in severe cases it can lead to paralysis or even death. So, in order to reduce the risk of Decompression Sickness, the air that divers breathe can be replaced with a slightly altered gas mix known as nitrox. To create this nitrogen and oxygen blend, and a good chunk of the nitrogen is replaced with additional oxygen. Because there is less nitrogen in this mixture, it is able to reduce nitrogen uptake in the body’s tissues. However, this tactic only works for relatively shallow diving. If one continues to dive deeper, below 30 meters or so, we run into another problem. At 50 meters, the ambient pressure is about 5 times as great as surface pressure. This means that the lungs would contain approximately five times as many nitrogen and oxygen molecules as they normally would. Breathing atmospheric air at this depth can lead to Nitrogen Narcosis, which impairs cognitive function, and is similar to that of inhaling nitrous oxide. Replacing the nitrogen with oxygen, as in the case of nitrox, doesn’t really help either, because, instead of nitrogen narcosis, the extra oxygen can lead to oxygen toxicity; which effects the central nervous system with side effects such as twitching, altered vision, and nausea. To combat this, both the nitrogen and oxygen must be reduced and replaced with an inert gas, such as helium, which has very little, if any, narcotic effect. This three gas blend is known as Trimix. For even deeper dives, the Trimix recipe can be altered by having less nitrogen and oxygen and even more helium. The nitrogen can even be eliminated altogether, creating a mix known as Heliox. But for especially deep dives, breathing this much Helium presents a new problem: HPNS or high pressure nervous syndrome. This disorder is still not fully understood, but it has been found that including another gas in the mixture, such as the nitrogen in Trimix, suppresses the effects of HPNS. The only problem with using Trimix at this depth is that, at this extreme pressure, molecular nitrogen and oxygen, which are somewhat heavier than the helium, become hard to breathe. Although the oxygen can’t be gotten rid of completely, the nitrogen can be replaced with hydrogen, the lightest element, which is much easier to breathe. This blend is known as Hydreliox. Even the helium can also be replaced with hydrogen, creating a mixture known as Hydrox. Both of these blends are used for extremely deep dives, and have been tested to simulated depths in excess of 700 meters. Although this video has covered a good portion of the breathing gas mixtures utilized by divers, there are still more exotic breathing gasses that were not covered. Regardless, I hope you’ve learned exactly why deep divers can’t rely on atmospheric air alone.
