Step by step story how I built a 40-foot catamaran. A 3 year DIY yacht building project with tips, info and costs. If you have ever dreamt of building your own boat and sailing off over the horizon, Do it! This was the biggest and most rewarding projects I have ever undertaken. Part 1 - in a series of videos of how I did it. With subtitles - in English / Spanish. There is an EBOOK with the complete story of the building of Tokyo Express to be released shortly - Mar 2018. It describes the different phases of the build and the reasons for doing things the way I did. The story starts years before I started to build, with the twist and turns of events that led up to the decision to build a catamaran. The Book then takes you through the steps of the build in detail, with lots of practical information, until the launching of the boat. Join our Mail List and I will let you know when it is released. http://eepurl.com/cYONy5. There are more good books on the way this year! Plywood and epoxy is a great combination! You can easily create inexpensive high performance boats in your garage. I don't think people realise just how good a ply boat is using epoxy resin. You don't need exotic and expensive materials to build a fast lightweight boat. Performance unheard of with an aluminium tinny - like planing with 2 people and a 3hp motor.. Plans are available for 2 of the boats in this video "Noosa" and "Tewantin". Sailing boat plans for a 4.7m plywood Proa named "Geelong" shown in the video are nearly ready. Another catamaran?? Why not! They’re great fun, safe, easy to make and – with a bit of luck – they’re light enough for one person to carry around on their own. This is the “stitch and glue” version – and I think it looks pretty good. I might not bother with the glass-fibre cloth next time though – does it add much except weight? In case you missed the earlier builds – check out the other videos in the ‘Catamaran’ play list. I am learning a whole lot.. The mast and sails are from the Mirror dinghy that my grandfather built back in the 1970s – the rest of the boat is gone now. Any advice for me? (What have I done wrong this time??) Ok, here are some important website links. Please check them out.. Here's Tim's amazing guitar machine.. http://www.chordelia.com here's our online store where you can see some of the craft things we make and sell.. http://www.wayoutwestemporium.com/ and here's our Patreon page where you can see more of our plans and dreams. http://www.yachtgrot.com/featured-home-page/james-wharram-pahi-31-design-for-sale-in-faro-portugal.html Pahi catamarans are seaworthy family ocean cruisers with an easy motion and good speed potential. The hulls are canoe-like with distinctive raised ends. Daggerboards improve the windward perfomance somewhat over the Wharram Classic range and the provision of cruising amenities is more elaborate. The Pahi 31 is also named Areoi. Type: Performance cruiser Multihull type: Catamaran Construction: Plywood and GRP with polyester or epoxy resin Accommodation: Port hull: heads aft, galley midships, double bunk forward which converts to a dinette Bridgedeck: open bridgedeck can be covered by a tent when not under way Starboard hull: single bulk aft, nav area with full chart table midships, double bunk forward The cabin roof can be raised when not sailing to give standing headroom.

Daggerboards are one of the most misunderstood pieces of equipment on a catamaran. The dagger board is so much more important than you think and size matters - a lot! This video is about the construction of a custom daggerboard for the 40ft catamaran Tokyo Express. During the first year in the water after not being happy with the performance to wind of my cat, I sat down and studied books on the hydrodynamics of sailing and did a lot of measurement and analysis to come up the reason why I believe most cats don't go to wind. Cats simply don't have enough area. Simply that. https://timwestonboats.com/plans/ has more information on the topic. I also believe they typically don't the have enough chord, I don't believe high aspect ration slender boards are the answer for a cruising size cat. That was my thinking then and it is still my thinking. Also I believe one large board is better/more efficient than 2 boards. I designed and built one large "Megaboard" a dagger board that was 150% larger than the 2 original boards it replaced. After 3 months work doing the retro fit alone, I relaunched a completely different boat. The difference in performance was phenomenal. It was a different boat. I could now go to wind, pointing not only just as high or higher than a monohull but a lot faster. And even more importantly I could also go to wind slowly, pointing high, when the conditions were bad and I needed to slow down I could go to wind at slow speed without stalling the dagger board or excessive leeway, loading up the rudders. The biggest difference, which was immediately noticeable was the steering. Now there was no sideslip anymore there was no load on the rudders. It was like I had fitted power steering, there was no load on the steering. The small autopilot that used to have a hard time when it was really starting to blow and I was hard on the wind, now functioned as if I was running down wind. There was no difference, upwind or downwind. There is no asymmetric drag with this daggerboard, despite it's size and there is no measurable drag. When I'm underway it is down always, downwind or upwind. Lifting the board when running down wind makes no difference to the speed. I believe most cats suffer the same problem, of daggerboards or keels that are too small. It is also an important aspect of the safety of sailing a cat, the ability to slow down and still go to wind without loosing your grip on the water, loading up rudders, etc. If you are building a new boat and are not too far advanced it maybe something worth thinking about. And if you have a cat a refit, while a big job will transform your boat. Plans will be available soon on the website to build this dagger board, or ones very similar to it. --- Mobile devices require the YouTube App for full 360 Viewing--- Thank you for watching one of our 360 VR YouTube Videos! This video features a new 37 foot Invincible Brand Center Console. What makes this Center Console unique? It's a Catamaran. These boats are growing in popularity as they offer a much more stable performance in rough water. Although many would contest as to the trade-offs, these new Center Console Cats are doing very very well on the market. The Invincible Build: ur patented monohull makes our boats fast while allowing passengers to stay comfortable and dry in rough seas. This comes from the facts: our hull has one of the lowest drag coefficients of any monohull in the world and was designed by the distinguished naval architect Michael Peters. The air-fed tunnel produces higher speeds with lower power and a more stable ride, while maintaining maneuverability. We have honed its construction to be tough, yet lightweight to further increase fuel efficiency. Our patent-pending catamaran hull incorporates the best elements from our monohulls with the additional stability provided from a multihull design. Morelli & Melvin, creators of many America’s Cup sailing yachts, designed the hull through cloud computing utilizing advanced fluid dynamics software originally intended for use in aeronautical environments. They generated the incredible hybrid semi-asymmetric design that eliminated undesirable characteristics present in many powered catamarans. As a result, our catamarans can maneuver at high speeds as well as a monohull along with comfortably handling quartering and following seas. Fuel economy is still comparable with our monohulls, even with the increased overall size. We are always pushing towards the best blend of function and elegance. For example: Our angled leaning post isn’t only comfortable; it also keeps riders secure at the back and houses a large, well-insulated cooler underneath. Our hardtops aren’t only good for providing lots of shade, but they are large enough to support outriggers, a mounted spotlight, and an infrared imaging camera all at once. The helm may look neat, but it is also arranged in the ideal layout for maintaining control under rough conditions and accommodating large electronics for ease of navigation and fishing. The rear insulated boxes serve as good storage, and they were designed specifically to fit wahoo and kingfish without bending their tails. We develop and refine our features on every part of the boat without sacrificing comfort or attractiveness. Our customers will never have to deal with the consequences of short-sighted design. Loaded with Features Each Invincible boat comes with many standard features which might not be seen at first glance. AGM batteries for longer life and a slower discharge rate when stored. Our high-speed baitwell pickup, so circulation is maintained even at high speeds. Under gunnel LEDs to illuminate the deck when traveling at night. These are just a few examples where we provide standard features for all our boats to make usability and maintenance easier. Customer Service All of the above would not be possible without a great team. We want to uphold the highest quality, and we pride ourselves on building boats that are the best for fishing, diving, and cruising. Our team’s input is responsible for making the boats better by listening to your needs and wants. We make it easy and simple to reach the right people so that you can get right down to business whether you need sales, production, or service. Our vision is to provide premium customer service and unprecedented attention to detail. Every person at Invincible is working to make sure your boat is flawless. Similar Searches: 1. Hey Tribe! We know you LOVE the technical side of sailing so we put together this special interview with a naval architect. Kiril did an awesome job filming and editing this together, and we sure hope you learn as much as we did! If you like Kiril's editing style check out his channel https://www.youtube.com/user/kirildobrev ! Olivier Racoupeau is a naval architect and has designed cruising yachts for Amel, Wauquiez, Garcia, Beneteau, Fountaine Pajot, and many other custom projects. A few months ago while we were in La Rochelle the team at Amel asked if we would like to interview Olivier, who is responsible for the design of the Amel 55, 64, and the new 50 foot sloop that was just launched. We pretty much jumped at the chance to pick his brain about the differences between modern cruising yachts and those from Delos's era. We learned a lot and hope you do as well! A candid interview with Catamaran Specialist Wiley Sharp on the benefits of a Catamaran. Wiley Sharp grew up on the West Coast of Florida where he was exposed to sailing and fishing at a very young age. Sailing and cruising became a mainstay in Wiley’s life after high school when he went to sea to earn his captain’s license. This took him down to Cape Town, South Africa to face some of the toughest seas in the world. http://www.denisonyachtsales.com/2013/02/florida-yacht-broker-wiley-sharp/ After earning his 200-ton license, Wiley went to work in the Bahamas as a charter captain. From there his love for the sea and hard work ethic took him to St. Vincent as an operations manager for a large charter company. After a period of time in St. Vincent he moved to Grenada to open and manage a new charter operation with a fleet of 20 yachts and catamarans. Wiley’s experience gained over thousands of miles at sea, countless hours maintaining boats, and his love for all things boating, makes him a great choice when looking for your next cruising yacht. Here's our test of the Aquila 48, a power catamaran designed for privacy. MarineMax, which includes MarineMax Vacations, played a hand in developing the Aquila line, has a lot of experience in the charter vacation segment of the industry. That experience taught them that privacy aboard a boat of this size is both in demand, and exceptionally rare. So they made an honest effort to create it—and succeeded. RED SEA 34 - This spacious pleasure craft is capable of transforming into a fully functional narrow configuration allowing for convenient docking and trailering! The intention for the design in the expanded configuration is to be robust enough to handle pleasure use under mild to moderate conditions and to provide ample space for entertaining and relaxing. Safety, reliability and durability is essential, so the design utilizes a large swing bearing type mechanism (see excavator) to attach both arms at the central axis. As for the hull attachment mechanisms at the rear of the arms, up-stop, running and side friction wheels (see roller coaster) would attach to internal beams within the hull; and the front of the arms would utilize smaller swing bearings at the pivot points. The arms would also be constructed to allow for some slight flexibility. Dimensions: Total Useable Area: Approx. 500 sf (46 sq m) Length: 34 ft (7 m) Width (Expanded): 18 ft (5.5 m) Width (Compressed): 8 ft (2.4 m) Interior Area: 100+ sf (9 sq m) Exterior Deck Area: 400+ sf (37 sq m) Features: Expansive Deck Area Slide Out Deckside Bar Sleeps 5+ (Queen, Single, Tent) Seats 8+ 100+ Flush Capacity Solar PV Ready Glass Bottom View Dual Motors Shallow Draft Dual Steering Controls Full-size Lavatory Full-size Galley (Fridge, Stove, Sink) Wheel Chair Accessible Swim Platforms Rooftop Sun Bathing Rooftop Sunshade / Tent Indoor/Outdoor shower Barbecue Ample Storage Open Design More Benefits: Towable (Tri-axle trailer) No Long-term Moorage Fees Marina Friendly (Maneuverable) Multi-day Provisions Catamaran Stability Entertainment Ready Ultimate Weekend Excursions The Red Sea's ability to transform from a narrow configuration into a wide catamaran type configuration offers the best qualities of both designs. The catamaran mode facilitates overall stability, abundant deck space, and plenty of areas to relax, while the narrow dual hull configuration allows for easier docking and convenient trailering. The open concept interior space is designed to allow for multiple configurations of seating and sleeping arrangements: a full-size toilet, plenty of counter space, and a nicely integrated outer barstool area for entertaining. Another great feature is that both of the front seats cantilever over the glass bottom floor panels which allows for an unimpeded view and promotes a sense of 'flying' over the water. And, the rooftop sun bathing area also doubles as a tent platform, which is perfect for rests, privacy, or guest accommodation under the stars. In addition, the expansive deck space can even accommodate several two person tents allowing for fun raft-up parties with additional friends and family. The boat's 34-foot (10.4 meter) length provides enough practical interior and exterior space in both the open (18-foot width) and closed (8-foot width) configurations. The narrow configuration allows the Red Sea 34 to be trailered, thus eliminating expensive long-term moorage fees. The gasoline and propane tank capacities are similar to that of comparable length vessels, and the clean water and waste water tank capacities allow for multi-day excursions with multiple passengers. The estimated cost of the Red Sea 34 is estimated to be under $100 000 CAD. Thank you for your interest! If you build the design, please forward pictures of the results! The new 46ft Horizon SC46 solar catamaran combines eco-friendly technology, luxury and elegant design. The yacht was built in collaboration with SolarWaterWorld AG -- a German company that designs, develops and manufactures solar systems and accessories for boat use, for example, the upgrading and conversion of conventional boats and ships. Styled by megayacht designer Juan Carlos Espinosa, the Horizon SC46 is equipped with all amenities of a high-class motor yacht. It is also integrated with state-of-the-art green boat technology with an ultra low resistance and drift dynamic catamaran hull design, which ensures efficient handling characteristics and security in all situations. High efficient battery packages store sufficient energy required for propulsion, mooring, and overall boating activities. The first Horizon SC46's roof is fitted with 6kW of solar panel, and can cruise eight hours and more. The yacht features a saloon with fully equipped entertainment system, a galley with electric stove and refrigerator, dinette, a helm station, and an owner's stateroom with ensuite head and shower. Following the first Horizon SC46 solar yacht, Horizon will ship the next SC46 as a commercial passenger vessel. This commercial passenger SC46 will feature the same streamlined exterior profile, with a wider hull to provide more room for passengers. Modern interior will be provided to complement its exterior style. The vessel will be fitted with a large entertainment lounge and bar on main deck. Huge windows will increase the available views of SC46 passenger besides offering better natural lighting.
