For some, this so-called diet consists of avoiding sugar, while others believe it to be a strict way of eating that controls glucose. Unfortunately, neither are quite right. The "diabetes diet" is not something that people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should be following. "That just simply isn't how meal planning works today for patients with diabetes," says Amy Campbell, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, a nutritionist at Joslin and co-author of 16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet. "The important message is that with proper education and within the context of healthy eating, a person with diabetes can eat anything a person without diabetes eats," Campbell states. What's the truth about diabetes and diet? We know now that it is okay for people with diabetes to substitute sugar-containing food for other carbohydrates as part of a balanced meal plan. Prevailing beliefs up to the mid-1990s were that people with diabetes should avoid foods that contain so-called "simple" sugars and replace them with "complex" carbohydrates, such as those found in potatoes and cereals. A review of the research at that time revealed that there was relatively little scientific evidence to support the theory that simple sugars are more rapidly digested and absorbed than starches, and therefore more apt to produce high blood glucose levels. Now many patients are being taught to focus on how many total grams of carbohydrate they can eat throughout the day at each meal and snack, and still keep their blood glucose under good control. Well-controlled blood glucose is a top priority because other research studies have concluded that all people with diabetes can cut their risk of developing diabetes complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney and eye disease, nerve damage, and more, by keeping their blood glucose as closely controlled as possible. What does this mean for people with diabetes? This means that a person who has worked with a dietitian and a diabetes treatment team to figure out how many grams of carbohydrate they can eat throughout the day can decide at any given meal what they will eat. Those with diabetes who are not on insulin need to focus on keeping the amount of carbohydrate they eat consistent throughout the day. Those on insulin can decide both what and how much to eat at a given meal (as long as it doesn't exceed their daily allotment), and can then adjust their insulin accordingly. "There aren't any foods that are 'off-limits,'" says Campbell. "Rather , one just needs to learn how to spend his or her grams of carbohydrate wisely over the course of the day." Frequent home blood glucose monitoring is then used to keep track of the effects of meals and activity levels on their blood glucose. They work with their healthcare team to make adjustments in their food intake, physical activity, and medication to keep their blood glucose as close to normal as possible. How does carbohydrate counting work? Most foods--except meat and fat--contain some carbohydrate, and carbohydrate increases blood glucose faster than any other food. The number of grams of carbohydrate that a person can eat each day or at each meal is determined by: - Weight and weight loss goals - How physically active an individual is (because physical activity will lower their blood glucose) - What diabetes medication or insulin they are taking, and when - Other factors such as age or the presence of high blood fats (or any other medical issue, for that matter) For example, a 6' 2" tall man with diabetes who weighs 180 pounds and wants to maintain his current weight might be told he could eat 350 grams of carbohydrate spread out over the day. His goal would be to spread those grams out over the course of the day so that he doesn't send his blood glucose too high at any one time. If he is taking insulin or oral diabetes medication, he might also have to manage when he eats his carbohydrate in such a way that there is enough sugar from his meals in his bloodstream when his medication is working its hardest.

So if you take good measures like diet and excise , your borderline diabetes can become normal and atleast maintain that level for atleast 10 or 20 years sometimes. Only 10% progress even if they have good control of diet and exercise. So 90% can prevent the progression of borderline diabetes to diabetes. What are the food substances that you need to eat and you should know what we should avoid. What we should avoid is eating too much of white rice, eating too much of potato, sweetened beverages, the sugar containing foods and fruit juices that contain high sugars. You need to avoid them. We need to ensure that we are away from red meat, we need to be aware that we should not take too much of junk foods. If you avoid that then you can be sure that then your chances of progression of diabetes will reduce. Second thing is what sugars should you consume, you should consume whole grains especially the whole wheat, millet like ragi, jowar, foxtail millets. These millets definitely contain fiber rich food and we also look at all the articles and you can find substances that are rich in fiber, take whole fruits instead of taking juices. You can consume three portions of fruits every day, you can take peanut butter, tea, coffee without sugar and you can also ensure that you take Mediterranean diet which is rich in vegetables and also food s that coati protein. So if you take these substances that are good for health, which care wholesome and balanced, then you can definitely prevent diabetes. You should also ensure that you should take breakfast and a very less dinner. The more we eat in the night, more the risk of developing diabetes. So always try to take good early breakfast before e 8 o’clock and dinner should be just half or less than half of your breakfast. So this type of eating and avoiding certain foods like white rice, potato, juice and sugars, with consumption of whole grains , fruits, vegetables which are rich in containing rich in fibers, you will be able to prevent, not postpone the diabetes.

So to tell you what fruits are the BEST is going to be a bit tricky for me. I like all fruits and there are not very many fruits that I would tell you to stay away from, at least of the fresh variety. That being said, there are fruits and fruit-like foods that we most certainly should not partake of as those with diabetes. I think I want to start with those fruits we should avoid and end this video on a happy not today. Among fresh fruit, there are only a handful that fall above the low level of glycemic load. They are: Banana 11 Grapes 11 Figs 16 Dried Dates 18 Raisins 28 And the last 2 on the list aren’t actually fresh fruit. Dried fruit is a food we really should avoid as one with diabetes.They just compact all the sugars into a small package and really bump up the impact they can have on your blood sugar. Another fruit we need to avoid is any canned fruit packed in heavy syrup. Heavy syrup is honestly just another way to say “SUGAR.” It truly is a can of sugar waiting to elevate your blood sugar. Fruits canned in heavy syrup, on average, will add 40 to 50 grams of sugar per serving! So we should avoid those at all costs. If you need to get canned fruit, get those canned in water or in the fruits own juices, that is a much better substitute. While talking about fruit, we also must be sure we stay away from fruit-like foods like fruit roll ups, fruit chews and the like. Some may say made with real fruit juice and they are, but they are also made with real sugar. Also fruit juices are something you need to be leery of as well. Many of the fruit juices have added sugar and even if not, the juice has little of any dietary fiber which helps to off set some of the sugar’s effect on your blood sugar levels. OK, we have talked enough about fruits to avoid, how about fruit to enjoy! Pretty much any fresh fruit is on the table when it comes to prediabetes. While some are better than others, to sit and pick and choose for you would really be fruitless (pun intended). When thinking about the best fruits to eat, pick those that you like. I think choosing fruits that have edible skin is always good because of the dietary fiber they bring with them. Apples, pears, tomatoes (yes a tomato is a fruit) are all good choices. Berries are good choices for the same reason. Strawberries and blueberries bring a ton of antioxidants and Vitamin C to the table and their skin has a bit of fiber as well. As a matter of fact, apples and strawberries have the lowest GL among the most common fruits enjoyed by humans. Other great fruits are melons. For years, those of us with diabetes were told we couldn’t have melons because they were too high in sugars. The glycemic index of most melons is quite high. But when the glycemic load scale came to light, we saw that even though melons have a high GI, they really have little effect on our blood sugar at all. Watermelon is a wonderful example. Depending on what type, the GI of watermelon can be from 75 to 95. Now there is no way a person with diabetes would have even considered it OK to eat a food with a glycemic index that high, but the glycemic load of watermelon is only about 5, a perfectly fine food to eat. Citrus fruits are another great food. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes all have a low GL in the 1-4 ranges. Each of these fruits bring all important Vitamin C to our bodies which helps our immune system tremendously. Other fruits that are awesome are peaches, mangos, nectarines, cherries, I mean I could really just go on and on. Fresh fruit is a wonderful choice. Also, consider frozen fruit. Most frozen fruit is great as well. Just be sure to get frozen from the field, or without additives. Sometimes those additives are sugar or some other form of unhealthy carb. How do we incorporate fruits into our daily mean plan? Hey, they are great as one of your snacks through the day. Many fruits are also a great addition to things such as greek yogurt, oatmeal, sugar free jello. Many frozen fruits are just ready for a smoothie or a bowl of milk. Cut up a peach or put some frozen peaches in a bowl with some milk and a little sucralose and you will thank me tomorrow. Fresh fruit is great for the plate if you have diabetes. Find new ways to use them in your diet. Just don’t go overboard. While the GL of fresh fruit is very low, you still need to follow our guide of moderation and portion control.

Even if you are pre-diabetic or borderline diabetic, or diabetes is part of your family, it is important to follow a diabetic diet to prevent diabetes. Diabetologist, Dr. Sanjiv Bhambani with Moolchand Medcity suggests, "A diabetes diet should be high on fibre, must contain milk without cream, buttermilk, fresh seasonal fruits, green vegetables, etc." But remember to consume these components in moderation. Diabetes diet for Indians should have the ratio of 60:20:20 for carbs, fats and proteins. The doctor explains, "Per day calorie intake should be between 1,500-1,800 calories with a proportion of 60:20:20 between carbohydrates, fats and proteins, respectively." He adds that a diabetes diet should "have at least two seasonal fruits and three vegetables in a diet plan." Though dry fruits may seem like a healthy snack, it is not a good option for diabetics, as the fructose can spike your sugar level. Go for fresh fruits rather than dry fruits for diabetes control (but there are some restrictions... we'll come to it). But you can still opt for nuts as a healthy snack. The doctor shares his recipe for diabetes diet for Indians: - One teaspoon of methi seeds soaked overnight in 100 ml of water is very effective in controlling diabetes. - Drink tomato juice with salt and pepper every morning on an empty stomach. - Intake of 6 almonds (soaked overnight) is also helpful in keeping a check on diabetes. Rekha Sharma, President and Director of Indian Dietetic Association, shares some major diabetes diet pointers that one should follow at home or at a restaurant. Whole grains, oats, channa atta, millets and other high fibre foods should be included in the meals. If one feels like consuming pasta or noodles, it should always be accompanied with vegetable/sprouts. Milk is the right combination of carbohydrates and proteins and helps control blood sugar levels. Two servings of milk in a daily diet is a good option. Diabetes Control: Diabetic Diet Tips High fibre vegetables such as peas, beans, broccoli and spinach /leafy vegetables should be included in one's diet. Also, pulses with husk and sprouts are a healthy option and should be part of the diet. Pulses are important in the diet as their effect on blood glucose is less than that of most other carbohydrate containing foods. Vegetables rich in fibre help lowering down the blood sugar levels and thus are healthy. Good fats such as Omega-3 and monounsaturated fats (MUFA) should be consumed as they are good for the body. Natural sources for these are canola oil, flax seed oil, fatty fish and nuts. But sometimes we need to hear the “you can’t” message just as much as the “you can.” This video is going to give you general guidelines about foods to avoid. It doesn’t mean you can never have them, but the foods on this list are ones that you might partake of only on special occasions and celebrations. So let’s get started. The first group of foods you should avoid is pretty obvious actually….sugary foods. By this I mean those foods that are pretty much all sugar. Table sugar (sucrose) is basically half glucose and half fructose. Fructose gets metabolized and converts to fat at a higher rate than does glucose. The World Health Organization recommends that those with Type 2 diabetes take on no more than 25 grams of sugar per day. That is not a lot. The main problem we find is that with all the processed foods these days, you can be eating a lot of sugar without even knowing it. That is why we must be good label readers. Now let me say that not all carbs and sugars are exactly the same. While it is good to read those labels for carbs and sugars, also be aware of the glycemic index and load of a food. But, did you know some of these products are loaded with sugar? Many pasta sauces Most condiments Many breakfast cereals Pizza Dried Fruit Regular soda And the list goes on and on I am also sad to inform you that this includes much of what we would consider desserts. Cookies, pies, cakes, you know, all the good things? LOL We have got to watch out for those. There are certainly some sugar free or reduced sugar substitutes in this category that are really good however. I am not saying you should never eat sugar. I have an entire video as a matter of fact devoted to sugar. In moderation, plan a “sugar” day. Don’t let your birthday pass without a piece of cake. Eat a candy bar every now and then. But, as in all the foods I am mentioning today, avoid, but don’t cut out. Moderation is the key. Another group of foods we really need to stay away on a regular basis from is pasta. I know, it is one of my favorites too! But even the best of pastas has a medium GL at best and most have a rather high GL. Even the whole grain pasta can be hard on the blood sugar. Even those made from Durham Wheat can raise blood sugar. The problem is a little pasta is OK, but the sauces we put on them are usually the problem. And honestly, who wants to eat pasta without a sauce on them? If we could stick to the half cup serving and go very light on the sauce, pasta could be a once a week food. But we all know we are going to eat more than half a cup and we are going to load on the sauce. So avoid this as an every week type food. Another food we really need to keep our distance from is potatoes. I know, a baked potato with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, shew, I am getting hungry just thinking about it. But potatoes are just way to high on the carb scale, the GI scale and the GL scale. This goes for things like French fries, potato chips, baked potatoes, pretty much anything that has to do with a white potato. Now, as an alternative you can sneak in a baked sweet potato on occasion. I know, sweet is better than regular for diabetes, go figure. Dried fruits is something you will need to avoid. The main reason is that when the water is removed from these fruits, like raisins and prunes, the sugars are intensely concentrated. Some diabetes “experts” want you to stay away from most fresh fruits altogether, I think that is a mistake. Most fresh fruits have an extremely low GL and do not impact your blood sugar like some believe. While on the topic of fruit, stay away from canned fruit that is packed in heavy syrup. Heavy syrup is another word for sugar. If you get canned fruit, look for those canned it either their own juice or water. Rice is something we need to watch. Some will say only white rice is “bad rice” but there are some others that need to be avoided. Even whole grain rices can have a high GI or GL. I agree that most white rice needs to be avoided. White rice has an adverse effect on your blood sugar. Most experts when talking about rice will also lump in white bread and white flour. I am not one of them. White bread has a low GL, almost as low at whole wheat on a slice per slice comparison. While I don’t advice having sandwiches on white bread every day, I also don’t put it in a category of avoidance.

I guess one of the biggest myths in the world of diabetes is the myth that you can never ever have sugar again. This simply is not true. Many diabetes dieticians agree that it is actually good to have a small amount of sugar every few days for a couple of reasons. 1. It gives you a psychological edge in knowing that you can get through this thing called diabetes and feel normal when you can eat a candy bar. 2. By “scheduling” a bit of sugar once or twice a week, you are less apt to fall into the cravings for sugar. I am a huge proponent of a person with diabetes eating whatever they want. BUT, they must also do so in moderation. Do you want a big baked potato with sour cream, cheese, butter, bacon and chives? Eat one, just not every day. The same goes for sugar. There are a lot of really good treats that are sugar free out there. “Sweets” have come a long way for those of us with diabetes. And those products are good to keep that sweet tooth satisfied at times. I also feel fruit is an amazing way to eat healthy and satisfy a sweet craving. Watermelon is an amazing sweet fruit that you can have plenty of and not affect your blood sugar hardly at all. But there is just something about a 3 Musketeers or homemade apple pie isn’t there? I know. And so, schedule yourself a “cheat” day. Don’t let your birthday go by without a piece of birthday cake. You can’t visit the county fair and not have a funnel cake. Can they really expect you to go the family reunion and not have a piece of Aunt Thelma’s peanut butter pie? Eat! Just know how it will affect your blood sugar and compensate for it a bit. Maybe you eat a smaller breakfast with no carbs. Don’t skip a meal. Just maybe a day before and a day after a sugar snack you exercise a little more or stay away from the big carbs.
