His plan for quality mass and extreme strength isn't complicated. In fact, it's steeped in the fundamentals and old-school exercises that should be at the heart of everyone's program. It's a surefire road to growth, but it's fraught with pain and struggle. If you want to learn bodybuilding from the world's best bodybuilder, you're in the right place. | Basics Are Best | "The biggest mistake being made in bodybuilding today is that people aren't covering basic exercises," says the Austrian Oak. And by basic, Arnold doesn't mean easy. Many contemporary fitness centers are full of people on machines, not in squat racks, and big-box gyms often lack even a single platform. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor." Schwarzenegger's insistence on the essential lifts is not due to some grandfatherly desire to live in the past. It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth. | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips | Chest: "There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Legs "The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls." Abs: "The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. Along side the Rock, Zac holds his own, having carved out a chiseled body by focusing on 7 key elements of his training and nutrition. Recently, Men’s Fitness magazine published a story about the gains Efron made to get ready for his Summer comedy role. In this video, I am breaking down the most important aspects of his diet plan and workouts to help you to start getting better results from your workouts heading into Summer. I’m also going to take a look back at a former “most wanted” celebrity body (that of Taylor Lautner) to see what went wrong and prevented his gains from being permanent. First and foremost, it is worth noting that neither Zac Efron or Taylor Lautner are heavyweights. Both stand just 5 foot 10 inches tall and weigh no more than 170 pounds. To make his transformation for Baywatch, Efron gained just 10 pounds of lean muscle. The thing is, when you minimize your body fat levels and maximize the amount of muscle your body can naturally carry…you look much bigger than you are. Both of these guys have mastered this. That said, you can’t expect to look better without being willing to put in some hard work along the way. Zac did just this by adopting more heavy weight training into his workout routine. He stated that he never had lifted very heavy or explosive before preparing for this film. A lot of people actually find themselves in a similar position either because they are uncomfortable lifting heavy or just don’t have the base strength to be able to do it. By increasing his strength levels on the basic compound lifts, Efron was able to start adding to his muscle density and thickness. Next he followed a push, pull, legs training split. This workout sequence allows you to train your body more athletically since you train movements instead of individual muscles. The back and biceps are responsible for all lifts in which you pull the weight towards you or pull your body towards a fixed bar. It’s impossible to isolate their actions so it helps to train them together to allow you more recovery time between workouts. Daily ab training is another key to having the resting tone needed to showcase your abs year round (provided your diet and nutrition are in check). Zac Efron’s diet is also covered here as well. By including a cheat day once in awhile, he is able to maintain his sanity and consistency required to keep his body fat levels low year round. Get this right and you’ll be rewarded with a satisfying race come the big day. There are however a number of common pitfalls that marathon runners encounter, ruining the chances of them successfully achieving their marathon goals. In no particular order, here are five of my favourite marathon training tips to help you run to your potential… [1] Prepare Your Body to Run Some of the biggest improvements I’ve seen from my marathon runners, haven’t been as a result of dramatically increasing weekly mileage, or adding more speed sessions (although these are both important factors), but from becoming stronger physically as runners. The simple fact is, that when many runners approach marathon training, the mind might be willing, but the body is often less than able. Often instead of a 16 or 18 week marathon programme, we work from a 12 week programme, preceded by 4 to 6 weeks of specific preparation training. This preparation phase focuses heavily on run-specific strength workouts in the gym and out in the park, with medicine balls, resistance bands and kettle bells. The running sessions in these weeks are minimal in terms of volume – just enough to maintain fitness, and very much technique focused. If this sounds interesting, you’ll love our Free 30 Day Challenge as a means of building running strength, stability and technique. I’ll leave the link in the description. I’m a firm believer that runners of all levels benefit hugely from the resilience and strength that this preparation phase develops. This enables them to take maximum benefit from the heavy weeks of running that lie ahead, with reduced risk of injury. [2] Avoid Running Junk Miles You’ve probably heard this before, but junk miles really do hold little value! But what do I mean by running junk miles? Look at it this way: Every run session you complete should have a distinct purpose. Be it a long aerobic run, a tempo session, an interval session etc… you should know why you’re setting out on each running workout. If however, you’re just clocking the miles up with no specific structure, chances are that you’re not training as smartly as you should be. The temptation for less experienced runners is to panic about the impending marathon and add extra mileage, when what their bodies really need is rest and adequaterecovery between quality run sessions. It’s usually far better to fill your running week with a number of key, well executed sessions, each with a purpose, balanced out with good rest, than to try and squeeze as many mediocre runs in as your time allows. [3] Avoid Mid-Pace Mediocrity... These five marathon tips are a some of my favourites from a longer list I wrote a while back on the Kinetic Revolution blog. Immediately after ten minutes start your heart rate monitor so we can track the next 20 minutes. These 20 minutes need to be max pace for the entire 20 minutes. Stop the heart rate monitor at the 20 minute mark and start your cool down. The number you are looking for is the average heart rate over the 20 minutes. This is the number you are going to put into the Lactate Threshold Calculator. This is going to dictate the intensity of your motocross workout program. Get this done first before you do any of my programs so that you can monitor and track your fitness over time.
