Perhaps you have noticed this nutrient in a dietary multivitamin and wondered what it does. According to Dr. Weil choline is not really considered a vitamin, but it's a micro nutrient. Micro nutrients are things people need a very tiny amount of to keep good health. Some symptoms that someone isn't consuming enough of this nutrient is that they may feel fatigued more often than they should. They could experience cognitive problems, such as trouble remembering things and experience nerve or muscle problems. It also could negatively affect the kidneys resulting in a folate acid deficiency more likely. Folate acid is needed to make red blood cells that carry oxygen around the human body. It's especially important with women because if a pregnant woman doesn't have enough folate acid it increases the chance of her giving birth to a baby with a neural tube defect by around 70%. A neural tube defect almost always results in the death of a baby. More bad news is that according to Dr. Weil a deficiency of this nutrient has been connected to an increased risk of liver cancer. In conclusion you really should ensure you are not deficient in this nutrient. The good news is that it's in a lot of foods such as eggs, beef, broccoli, peanut butter, fish and even chocolate. Another idea is just to take a good daily multivitamin to ensure you're getting all the nutrients your body needs. Supplements and alternative medicine can be confusing and even harmful.
