But here's some information about warfarin, how it works, international normalised ratio (INR) and interactions which you may find useful. WHAT IS WARFARIN: Warfarin is the main oral anticoagulant used in the UK. An anticoagulant is a medicine that prevents blood clotting. Clotting (thickening) is a complex process involving a number of substances called clotting factors. Clotting factors are produced by the liver and help control bleeding. They work with cells that trigger the clotting process (platelets) to ensure blood clots effectively. Warfarin blocks one of the enzymes (proteins) that uses vitamin K to produce clotting factors. This disrupts the clotting process, making it take longer for the blood to clot. WHEN IS WARFARIN PRESCRIBED: Anticoagulant medicines, such as warfarin, are often prescribed for people who've had a condition caused by a blood clot or have an increased risk of developing harmful blood clots. TAKING WARFARIN: It's very important that you take warfarin exactly as directed. Don't increase your prescribed dose unless the doctor in charge of your care advises you to. Warfarin is taken once a day, usually in the evening. It's important to take your dose at the same time each day, before, during or after a meal. The "oil is bad" phobia is getting ridiculous. The animals were divided into three groups for the study, one of which was fed the combination of grape compounds. A second group was given an anti-inflammatory drug that can reduce tumors known as sulindac, while the third group stuck to a normal diet and served as the control. 50 percent decrease in tumors In the group of mice who were fed the grape compound, the number of tumors fell by an impressive 50 percent. While a similar decrease was seen in the group taking sulindac, that group suffered gastrointestinal toxicity; those taking the grape compound did not. Interestingly, these two nutrients did not suppress the cancer stem cells as much when they were taken in small doses separately. Instead, researchers found that they got the best results when the two were combined. Best of all, the combination is not toxic to healthy cells, which means they could form the basis of a cancer treatment that is far safer than chemotherapy. Resveratrol is found in the skin and seed of grapes, and you can also find it in foods like pomegranates, blueberries and cranberries. Past studies have shown that it can cut your risk of heart disease and keep some types of cancer at bay, like pancreatic cancer. Grape seed extract, meanwhile, has been found to help stave off tooth decay, kill leukemia cells, and enhance brain health. Nature has the answers This is just the latest example of nature providing the answer to one of life’s problems. Professor Vanamala, who led the study, said that plant-based diets provide the body with vital compounds that can kill cancer stem cells, so he recommends that people eat a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits to help prevent colon cancer, promote bacterial diversity, and prevent chronic illnesses. Of course, it’s important to seek out organic produce or you could be doing more harm than good. Professor Vanamala pointed out that cultures that eat a plant-based diet typically have the lowest rates of colon cancer, and he feels this is because their food is covering all the bases by giving people a wide variety of compounds that can target the different pathways cancer stem cells depend on for their survival. I switched completely to a Whole Food Plant Based Diet in the beginning of 2017. On May 9th I had the opportunity to share my journey at Dr Won's (@SpineDrWon) plant based diet seminar (https://www.facebook.com/SpineDrWon/videos/2051775514850452/). Below are my notes from my talk. Not a word for word transcript. But the general idea of the message shared. I don't have any chronic illness or medical event which caused me to go to a whole food plant based diet. I had always been very active. In high school I ran track and cross country. As an adult I enjoyed riding my bike. And even up through age 40 rode mountain bikes a couple times a week with friends I had always wanted to run. Marathon. So in 2010 at 44 years old I trained for and ran the Dallas White Rock marathon. I completed it in 4:50 more than an hour less than my goal! Shortly afterwards I started having pain in my right knee. Fast forward a few years. My dad died in 2006 with Parkinson's and Lewy Body disease. My mom had diabetes and had been on numerous medications. She would eventually spend the last year's of her life suffering from Alzheimer's disease before she died in 2016 at the age of 83. I was overweight and not in very good physical shape. I had a long bout of acid reflux and was put on two medications which I eventually was able to replace with natural solutions I started walking and climbing the stairs at my office. However shortly after that In spring 2015 I tore my miniscus in my right knee. Due to my job situation and insurance I had to wait a year for surgery. But that surgery didn't solve all the problems and in fact with the scope determined that right knee was severely impacted by degenerative arthritis. So in October 2016 I had knee resurfacing in my right knee. To further complicate my recovery I was diagnosed with a blood clot in the surgical leg. I was put on blood thinners. (As a side note I didn't know about stem cell at that time nor do I know if it would have been an option over the surgery I had done). Following two months recovery I was released from physical therapy. By then I weighed 243 pounds. With little guidance from the doctor or physical therapist I joined the rec center and started using the elliptical. I started watching what I ate by calorie counting. If I worked out one day I could eat more. If not.. no ice cream for me! I lost about 15-20 pounds in a few months. But eventually the weight loss stopped. I got a second blood clot in the other leg and was put back on blood thinners. I got frustrated because I thought I was eating well. I started hearing things about the effects of sugar. And while I had done some things like switching ice cream to frozen yogurt when I looked at added sugar I found it was in everything. Call me squeamish, but when PUBLIC and Double Crown chef Brad Farmerie busted out an IV bag filled with blood, that, in a short time I’d be eating, I felt a little spooked. Sure, I was at a blood cooking demo at the StarChefs 2010 International Chefs Congress, and sure, I’ve eaten some pretty weird things, but eating ingredients from a medical apparatus is a first. OK, so I have been known to use hypodermic needles to inject flavor into animal flesh, but seeing blood red liquid in an IV bag destined for my plate felt like another level of ickyness. What can I say? I don’t like to mix my meal with my medicine. Revulsion soon turned to utter mesmerization as I watched Farmerie working this scarlet wonder. The rich, bright color and the shiny, unctuous texture of this liquid was simply entrancing. Watching him pour, squirt, and fill things with the blood, I was like a venison in headlights. And speaking of venison, Farmerie used venison blood and pig blood to make two staples on his Public and Double Crown menus, which the class had a chance to recreate for themselves. First came black pudding, which he called “blood with training wheels,” because it’s an easy introduction to working with blood. He finished with boudin noir, a dish he likens to “putting soup into an intestine and trying to turn it into something delicious.” Farmerie definitely turned it into something delicious, thanks to the earthiness of porcini mushroom powder, the green apples cooked in duck fat and deglazed in rum, and the Quatre Épices spice blend traditionally used in the dish altered with star anise and green cardamom pods. According to Farmerie, with the exception of Jewish and Islamic cultures, blood is an ingredient in almost every other ethnic cuisine. While Islamic cultures consider blood to be the soul of the animal—and thus an ingredient to avoid—Scandinavian cultures eat it for that very reason, believing it brings power, strength and nutrition to the body. They bake blood into their bread, and make blood pancakes during the holidays. Lao people have a version of larb (minced meat salad) that uses duck blood, while Filipinos make dinuguan, a stew made with pigs blood. There are Polish, Vietnamese and Swedish versions of blood soup, and around the world, blood pudding (also known as blood sausage ) can be found in various incarnations, from the UK’s black pudding, to the Germany Blutwurst, or the Korea Soondae. Chemically speaking, bloods are very similar, but have very different flavor profiles and viscosities. For example, sheep’s blood is very thin, while cow’s blood is rich and thick. Farmerie, however thinks bovine blood is “insipid” and says that’s the reason why the flavor is so “disappointing.” He favors pork, venison, and rabbit blood, which are not nearly as easy to find. Farmerie says it’s harder to get blood then drugs. There’s some “legal issues” involved in shipping blood, and a bit of skittishness, so some vendors send it with a separate, blank invoice, while others prefer to ship it in a hospital bag. Now, call me crazy, but perhaps mailing an IV bag filled with blood will stand out just as much as a food container filled with red liquid? Considering that 7% of an animal’s weight is in blood, Farmerie rues that most people let it just “drip down the drain.” With the rising interest in reducing waste and nose-to-tail eating, and with an increase in humanely raised and killed animals, maybe it’s blood’s time in the scarlet spotlight.
