See Text below for more information about Niacin and its effects on Lipids overall. Niacin (or Nicotinic Acid) is a form of vitamin B3. Niacin is one of the essential nutrients for the human body. Niacin deficiency can cause pellagra, while insufficient niacin in the diet can cause nausea, skin and mouth lesions, anemia, headaches, and tiredness. A recommended daily allowance of niacin would be 2–12 mg/day for children, 14 mg/day for women, 16 mg/day for men, and 18 mg/day for pregnant or breast-feeding women. Niacin in much higher doses than those recommended as daily dietary allowance is a potent agent against Dyslipidaemia. In doses as high as 1.500 - 2.000mg is proven to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol by 20%, increase HDL (good) Cholesterol by 30%, and also reduce Triglycerides by almost 40%. It is also proven to reduce the atherogenic fraction of LDL: Lp(a), and apolipoprotein Apo-B (which is the carrier of lipids in LDL-C). Two large studies have been conducted with these doses of Niacin with patients under treatment with Statins. (AIM-HIGH & HPS2-THRIVE). These studies concluded that there is no added cardiovascular benefit by concomitant use of high doses of Niacin along with statin treatment, when LDL-C levels are already very low. It seems though that Niacin treatment is effective in patients not treated with statins. Niacin in such high doses can cause Flushing. Another form of vitamin B3 is Nicotinamide, but only Niacin has been found to have this strong effect on dyslipidaemia.

But too many people continue to value it.) . Along with it's partner chemical, Nicotinamide, it is the B3 complex. Niacin was discovered in the late 1800s and confirmed in the early 1900s. It was originally called "PP" factor, for Pellagra Prevention factor. Pellagra can cause severe skin disease. It also can create black tongue. This is also cured by niacin. Niacin was originally made by oxidizing NICOTINE. The similarities in these two molecules is shown in the video. It may have something to do with the far-reaching impact of nicotine. Niacin is involved in more metabolic processes (over 450) than any other vitamin cofactor. And Niacin has been found to have a positive impact on more cholesterol, lipid and cardiovascular problems than any other medicine. Debate started in 2011 with 2 studies, HPS2-THRIVE and AIM HIGH. The problem with HP2-THRIVE was lapropriant. Lapropriant was the popular medication used to stop niacin flush. Niacin flush is created by action on prostaglandin receptors. Lapropriant blocks those receptors. This receptor-blocking activity stopped the niacin flush. But it appears it also stopped the positive impact of niacin. AIM HIGH was another study that failed to show positive impact by niacin. There is a lot of debate re: the reason. It ranges from the thought that niacin doesn't work to problems with the study design. Does niacin help or not? It's still a debate. Many studies have shown that it does. So, what the heck does this mean?... The “obvious” problem is smoking. I think everyone knows by now just how bad smoking is for you. And most people associate smoking to lung disease or lung cancer. However, most people don’t realize that cigarette smoking causes 1 in every 5 deaths in the US. That’s 20% of all deaths! In fact, it’s the main preventable cause of death and illness in the United States. And this is because smoking harms nearly every organ in your body... including the heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes, mouth, reproductive organs, bones, bladder, and digestive organs. Now, a “not so obvious” problem with smoking is that it causes major damage to your blood vessels and circulation! The chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells. They also can damage the function of your heart and the structure and function of your blood vessels. This damage increases your risk of atherosclerosis -- which is a disease that causes plaque build up in your arteries. Over time, plaque hardens and narrows your arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen & nutrient rich blood, to your organs and other parts of your body. Not only is this bad for your heart, which dramatically increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke. It’s also one of the leading causes of AGING -- for your body, skin, organs and even brain! For some people, such as women who use birth control pills and people who have diabetes or high blood sugar, smoking poses an even greater risk to the heart and blood vessels. Secondhand smoke has all the same problems of regular smoking, but it’s just not as “concentrated”. Secondhand smoke is the smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe. It also refers to smoke that's breathed out by a person who is smoking. My point with today’s short video is to remind you that smoking is bad for you, obviously… However, lung cancer is the LEAST of your problems when it comes to smoking. A much bigger problem is the decrease in blood flow and circulation, which affect every organ and cell in your body. If you’re over the age of 35, if you have high blood sugar or blood pressure, if you’re overweight, if you live a high-stress life, if you don’t exercise daily, if you don’t eat healthy, etc., etc…. Then smoking dramatically increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke. If nothing else and you only care about your looks and vanity, smoking really AGES you - both internally, as well as externally. So at this point, you need to first make a decision and COMMIT that you’re going to STOP smoking permanently. If not for yourself, then for your family, friends and loved ones. Smoking has been one of the risk factors that's most well-established for the development of heart disease and the buildup of atherosclerotic or cholesterol plaques in the arteries of the heart. The link between smoking and heart attack and stroke has been very strongly established in the medical literature. How does smoking lead to the buildup of cholesterol plaque in the arteries? It's a pretty complicated mechanism, but some of the basics we know. When people smoke, it increases the likelihood that cholesterol in the blood will be taken up into the arteries of the heart. In addition, it increases the inflammation of the arteries of the heart. If we take a campfire analogy of coronary atherosclerosis, we can consider the artery as the campfire and every time you smoke, it's like taking a little squirt of lighter fluid and adding it to the campfire. Each time, you get a little burst of inflammation and that causes a little more damage. This is a very simplistic way of looking at things, but helps give us a visual of what might be going on in the arteries of the heart when someone smokes. Not only has the link between smoking and heart disease been well-established, but the amount you smoke makes a real difference. With each additional cigarette per day, we've been able to show an increased rate of heart attack and stroke. The flip side of that coin, is as anyone reduces the amount they smoke, their risk of heart disease dramatically reduces. Stopping smoking is one of the single best ways for someone to reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart attack. So, smoking, can be said to directly lead to the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries.

He is well known for research that looks at the effects of stress on brain, memory and synaptic plasticity. A primary research project over the past few decades has been the study of treatments for combat veterans and civilians with PTSD. Although his academic specialty is neuroscience, recently he has been closely examining the role of fat and cholesterol in heart disease. He began looking into lipids after test results showed his triglycerides were through the roof.  He also launched a critical look into the effectiveness of statins, a class of drugs doctors frequently prescribe to help people lower cholesterol levels in their blood. Dr. Diamond’s findings contradicted the low-fat, high-carb diet that he, as well as many Americans, had been advised to follow. This led him to explore ways for people to optimize their diet for cardiovascular health. He eventually created a graduate and undergraduate seminar entitled, “Myths and Deception in Medical Research.” A lecture he gave at the university entitled “How Bad Science and Big Business Created the Obesity Epidemic” is now a YouTube video with nearly 200,000 views. The lecture focused on how “flawed and deceptive science demonized saturated fats and created the myth that a low-fat, plant-based diet is good for your health.” Dr. Diamond received his B.S. in biology from the University of California, Irvine in the 1980. He continued his post-graduate work at the university and earned a Ph.D. in biology with a specialization in behavioral neuroscience. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Diamond was an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology in the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He then moved to University of South Florida and since 2003 has been a professor in the departments of psychology, molecular pharmacology and physiology. In addition to directing USF’s Neuroscience Collaborative, Dr. Diamond also is the director of the university’s Center for Preclinical and Clinical Research on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. His research projects at the university have ranged from “The Effects of Stress on Brain, Memory and Synaptic Plasticity” to “The Cognitive and Neurobiological Perspectives on Why Parents Lose Awareness of Children in Cars.” Dr. Diamond has served on federal government study sections and committees evaluating research on the neurobiology of stress and memory and has more than 100 publications, reviews, and book chapters on the brain and memory. He is a fellow in the American Institute of Stress and in 2015 he received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Science from the Riga Diabetes and Obesity World Congress. Some human cancer data show an increase in the incidence of leukemia, stomach cancer, cancer of the pancreas, and Hodgkin’s disease in workers exposed to ethylene oxide. However these data are considered to be limited and inconclusive due to uncertainties in the studies. EPA has classified ethylene oxide as a Group B1, probable human carcinogen. Another process of sterilizing spices is food irradiation. It is the process of using radiation to kill bacteria and other contaminants. But while radiation is used to reduce bacteria in the spices we are consuming, the finished product has decreased levels of vitamins and natural enzymes. Irradiation changes the chemical composition of a spice, potentially creating toxic, carcinogenic by-products in the food and increasing our exposure to free radicals. Free radicals cause aging and disease – something we want to avoid at all costs! A large number of spices on the market today contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), a known carcinogen, endocrine disrupter and killer of brain cells, which may also be linked to the development of cardiac problems, kidney problems, neurological disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease. It can also lead to inflammation, migraines, obesity and/or cell damage, to name only a few potential effects. MSG hides under many names, including but not limited to hydrolyzed protein, sodium caseinate, yeast extract, textured protein and autolyzed yeast. This lecture is part of the IHMC Evening Lecture series. https://www.ihmc.us/life/evening_lectures/ For the past 60 years there has been a concerted effort to demonize saturated fats, found in animal products and tropical oils, and cholesterol, in our food and blood. Despite the well-established health benefits of diets rich in cholesterol and saturated fat, flawed, deceptive and biased research has created the myth that a low fat, plant-based diet is ideal for good health. I will deliver an update on a talk I gave 2 years ago at the IHMC in Ocala, which will provide a historical perspective on how poorly conducted epidemiological research, U.S. government intervention and misinformation conveyed by contemporary lifestyle researchers have contributed to the current state of confusion on dietary influences on health. In addition, I will discuss how biased research has created the false appearance that high levels of serum cholesterol cause heart disease. I will describe how researchers have used deceptive statistics to give health care providers and the public the false impression that statins produce a dramatic reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality. I will point out that the miniscule benefits of statins are offset by their well-documented adverse effects, such as promoting the development of type 2 diabetes, cognitive impairments, cataracts, muscle pain and wasting, and increased incidence of cancer. This talk will serve as a wake-up call for the public to educate themselves as to how to optimize their diet and cardiovascular health. David. M. Diamond received his Ph.D. in Biology in 1985, with a specialization in Behavioral Neuroscience, from the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine. He is a professor in the Departments of Psychology and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida, where he has directed his research program on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Diamond has served on federal government study sections and committees evaluating research on the neurobiology of stress and memory, and has over 100 publications, reviews and book chapters on the brain and memory. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals and has received 30 years of federally funded support for his research. In the past decade, Dr. Diamond has expanded his research program to include cardiovascular disease and nutrition. His controversial research is an extension of an advanced seminar he directs at the University of South Florida entitled “Myths and Deception in Medical Research”, which emphasizes the critical evaluation of methods and conflicts of interest in health-related research. In recent years he added to his list of publications controversial papers on diet, cholesterol and statins, including one paper published in the peer-reviewed medical journal “Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology”, which described the deceptive practices employed by researchers promoting statins for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Diamond has been invited to present his myth-busting views on nutrition and cholesterol to lay people and physicians at nutrition, cardiology, obesity and diabetes conferences all over the world.

High blood pressure from smoking can damage the kidneys. The health effects of smoking have results we can measure. Forty percent of men who are heavy smokers will die before they reach retirement age, as compared to only 18 percent of nonsmokers. Women who smoke face an increased risk of cervical cancer, and pregnant women who smoke take a chance with the health of their unborn babies. But the good news is that when you quit smoking your body begins to repair itself. Ten years after you quit, your body has repaired most of the damage smoking caused.
