Immune System Hacks: How Inflammation is Measured- Thomas DeLauer

Immune System Hacks: How Inflammation is Measured- Thomas DeLauer: We deserve to know how inflammation affects us. This quick educational piece will teach you! Learn more at http://www.thomasdelauer.com Inflammation is the body’s response to injury and infections and is essential in healing. This is how the immune system responds and delivers white blood cells and other things essential for getting well. When we have chronic inflammation, however, this becomes a problem. Chronic inflammation can lead to other diseases and can also be a signal of conditions in the body. But how can you know if you have chronic inflammation in the body? It is not always as obvious as bloating, and even when it is, the cause and treatment may not be clear. When a part of your body is inflamed that inflamed tissue will release extra proteins into your blood. These extra proteins can be found in blood tests and are known as inflammation markers. 3 common tests for increased protein: ESR, CRP and PV- ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate): A blood sample is taken and treated with a chemical so that the red blood cells will fall away from the clear liquid plasma. The rate at which the red blood cells fall is measured. When certain proteins are present they will cause the red blood cells to stick together and fall more quickly. Thus a high ESR rate shows that there is inflammation somewhere in the body. CRP (C-reactive protein): CRP is a substance that is produced in the liver. More CRP is produced when there is inflammation in the body. Increased CRP is tied to the increase of one specific protein and is thus a bit more specific than an ESR, but still does not reveal what condition specifically is causing the inflammation. PV (plasma viscosity): Similar to ESR, but used specifically for rheumatoid arthritis Evaluation of these tests over time acts as a signal to a doctor, and provides additional information about inflammation. ESR and PV change more slowly than CRP. CRP is affected by fewer factors than PV and ESR, making it a better marker for certain types of inflammation. Raised ESR, CRP and PV are signs of many infections, including: -bacterial infections -some cancers -Crohn’s Disease -rheumatoid arthritis -muscular and connective tissue disorders -infections post-surgery These are non-specific tests and further tests are needed to narrow down the specific cause of the inflammation. Doctors will often recommend these tests twice or more spread out over weeks to months to see how the levels change over time. As CRP changes more quickly it is often used to see how well a treatment is going. Lower CRP signals an improvement. Quantitative Immunoglobulins Test: Another test that is often run to find inflammation markers, is one that measures the levels of the three main immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM). Both high and low levels are markers of different conditions and diseases. Immunoglobulins are antibodies that are produced during your body’s response and play a role against bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. This test is run when chronic inflammation is suspected or continuous infections occur. This helps to diagnose and monitor conditions. Used together and with other tests depending on symptoms and results, it is possible to diagnose and measure progress to treatment for many diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Understanding Treatment: When an area in the body is inflamed, COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes produce more prostaglandins (PGs), which play a key role in the inflammatory response. When you notice redness, swelling and pain, this is due to the prostaglandin response. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work to block the synthesis of PGs and thus the pain associated with inflammation. Future therapeutic measures for chronic inflammation may look at PG signaling. PGs may play a role in both the formation and resolution of inflammation. Lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and exercise are key in reducing chronic inflammation. References: 1. ESR സൂക്ഷിക്കുക Esr എന്നാൽ എന്ത് അറിയുക ( Be Careful ESR) ============================================= ESR ------- What Is an ESR Test? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••• My channel massage red. erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test is sometimes called a sedimentation rate test or sed rate test. This test doesn’t diagnose one specific condition. Instead, it helps your doctor determine whether you’re experiencing inflammation. The doctor will look at ESR results along with other information or test results to help figure out a diagnosis. The tests ordered will depend on your symptoms. This test can also monitor inflammatory diseases. In this test, a tall, thin tube holds a sample of your blood. The speed at which the red blood cells fall to the bottom of the tube is measured. Inflammation can cause abnormal proteins to appear in your blood. These proteins cause your red blood cells to clump together. This makes them fall more quickly. Why Doctors Perform an ESR Test ============================= Your doctor may order an ESR test to help detect inflammation in your body. This can be useful in diagnosing conditions that cause inflammation, such as autoimmune diseases, cancers, and infections. An ESR test can monitor inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus. Your doctor might also order this test if you’re experiencing fevers, some types of arthritis, or certain muscle problems. The ESR test is rarely performed alone. Instead, your doctor will combine it with other tests to determine the cause of your symptoms. Preparing for the ESR Test --------------------------------------------- Many different medications and drugs affect your ESR test results. These include: androgens, such as testosterone estrogens aspirin or other salicylates, when taken in high doses valproic acid (Depakene) divalproex sodium (Depakote) phenytoin (Dilantin) heroin methadone phenothiazines prednisone *********************** ESR test results In kerala =============== are measured in mm/hr, or millimeters per hour. Does high level of ESR,low Hb & mantoux test showing erthyema indicate TB - Dr. Sanjay Gupta

02:39
The diagnosis of tuberculosis as got a very wide spectrum right from the time you have a very easy way to find out whether the sputum brought by the person has got an acid fast bacilli which can be diagnosed very easily or a chest x ray which is showing signs of tuberculosis. But once the disease is very atypical, it is very difficult to make a very strong diagnosis of tuberculosis even though it is rampant, it is common, it affects most of the parts of the body so there are many tests done which the doctors like to interpret and come close to the diagnosis. Some of these tests are CBC, ESR, Mantoux test, chest xray, hemoglobin dropping which also seems like a chronic disease. With all these tests unless and until you have a background what kind of patient you are dealing, whether this immune is compromised or not, whether his nutrition is down or not, whether the patient has got a proper exposure to tuberculosis, whether the patient is vaccinated prior or not, what are the coexisting diseases in the body when you are trying to diagnose tuberculosis in the body. This interpretation of the reports along with the clinical condition of the patients becomes extremely important. So I would say that there are probabilities of diagnosing tuberculosis by looking at the reports which are mentioned in the question like ESR or Mantoux or induration, within 24 to 72 hours. But these are only indicative tests. These bring you only closer to the diagnosis but an equally important part is clinical interpretation.

Blood Test spots Cancer a year early using ctDNA analysis

02:06
Researchers have taken an important step toward better lung cancer treatment by using blood tests to track genetic changes in tumors as they progress from their very earliest stages. With experimental tests that detect bits of DNA that tumors shed into the blood, they were able to detect some recurrences of cancer up to a year before imaging scans could, giving a chance to try new therapy sooner. It's the latest development for tests called liquid biopsies, which analyze cancer using blood rather than tissue samples. Some doctors use these tests now to guide care for patients with advanced cancers, mostly in research settings. The new work is the first time tests like this have been used to monitor the evolution of lung tumors at an early stage, when there's a much better chance of cure.
VolitionRx: Blood tests for cancers

02:20
VolitionRx Limited (NYSE MKT: VNRX) today announced that the Company’s NuQ® blood test has accurately detected 95% (19 out of 20) of pancreatic cancers within a 4,800-subject cancer trial at Hvidovre Hospital, University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Overall, the 4,800-patient retrospective study was conducted to detect colorectal cancer (CRC). However this patient cohort also included 166 patients who, although suspected for CRC, were found to have a different cancer. Of these 166 patients, 20 patients were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Analysis of patients’ blood samples demonstrated that a panel of two NuQ® assays and the classical cancer marker CEA (carcino-embryonic antigen) distinguished 95% of pancreatic cancer cases from healthy subjects at 84% specificity. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly and difficult to detect and diagnose cancers, as the signs and symptoms are similar to many other illnesses. There are more than 40,000 deaths and over 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. alone, and the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is currently just 7%1. Pancreatic cancer is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. by 20302.
