However, literally everyone overlooks hormonal health, in general, and therefore has missed the boat on the negative impact a specific compound in flaxseeds has on human endocrine balance. Let's talk about one of the side effects of flax seeds. This compound has an extremely powerful ability to lower human testosterone levels, and flax seeds contain them in an 800-fold amount over most other foods. Keep watching to find out what this compound is… Flaxseeds are incredibly dense in a compound known as lignans. They contain roughly 800x the amount of lignans as most other foods. Why is this a problem? Well, most people don’t realize this, but lignans are highly estrogenic. They’ve been shown to lower both free and total testosterone levels, as well as suppress the 5 alpha reductase enzyme activity. They increase production of SHBG, which is the protein that binds free testosterone, rendering it inactive. The studies done on flaxseeds make the overwhelming conclusion that flaxseeds and hormonal health are not exactly a match made in heaven. In fact, unless you’re a woman with excessive body hair growth, you’re going to want to stay far away from these pesky little estrogen-bombs. Flaxseeds have historically been used by medical researchers specifically to lower excess testosterone levels in women with a condition known as hirsutism, which is characterized by excessive facial hair growth. For example, this study demonstrated that daily consumption of flax seeds for 4 months annihilated total testosterone levels by 70% and free testosterone levels by 89%. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2752973/ In a similar study done on men, the subjects exhibited a not-as-extreme but still significant drop in total testosterone of 15% and free testosterone by 20%. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11445478 Unless you’re specifically looking to biologically castrate yourself, flax seeds should probably not be a staple food. Although flaxseed is generally safe when you eat it in small amounts, consuming more than 5 tablespoons, or 50 grams, of whole flaxseed per day may cause mild side effects. Risks and warnings Risks Consuming large amounts of flaxseed may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Flaxseed may affect your blood sugar or blood pressure. You shouldn’t eat flaxseed if you have a bowel disorder. Most people can eat flaxseed or flaxseed oil without experiencing any side effects. You should stay hydrated when consuming flaxseed. The seed is naturally absorbent and eating it can lead to dehydration if you don’t use moderation when consuming it. If you consume over 5 tablespoons of certain raw or unripe flaxseeds, you may experience mild side effects, including: bloating a stomachache indigestion gas You shouldn’t eat flaxseed if you have in inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, or frequent diarrhea. Flaxseed may lower your blood sugar levels, so people with diabetes or hypoglycemia should exercise caution. Recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Several studies have suggested that diets rich in flaxseed omega-3s help prevent hardening of the arteries and keep plaque from being deposited in the arteries partly by keeping white blood cells from sticking to the blood vessels’ inner linings. "Lignans in flaxseed have been shown to reduce atherosclerotic plaque buildup by up to 75%," Fitzpatrick says. Eating flaxseed daily may also help your cholesterol levels. The level of LDL or "bad" cholesterol in the bloodstream has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic sydrome. Patients with low risk prostate cancer under active surveillance may benefit from vitamin D3 supplementation at 4000 IU per day according to an article in the Journal of Endocrinology Metabolism. In patients with Gleason 6 prostate cancers, those treated with 4000 IU of vitamin D3 for one year, 55% had a decrease in Gleason findings or fewer positive biopsies, 11% were without change, and 34% were somewhat worse. The PSA scores did not change in these patients. Levels of vitamin D less than 20 ng/ml showed a strong correlation with increased risk for death. We know that vitamin D increases differentiation of cancer cells. Besides treating Gleason 6 prostate cancers with vitamin D, there are other approaches that could be of value, such as an alkaline diet, use of modified citrus pectin, flax seed oil, lifestyle strategies, mushrooms, antioxidants, vitamin C and K. There are many articles supporting this approach such as one done by Dean Ornish, MD. Mortality risk may also be reduced among those living with breast cancer.” Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada says, recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may protect against breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer.
