Read More: http://www.GistOnThis.com David Latimer is one of the world's few proud owners of an entirely self-sustaining bottled garden. Looking at pictures of the lush green bottle, you'd think that growing it involved a lot of hard work. But the truth is that David hasn't even watered it in over 40 years. It's just been sitting under the hallway stairs in his home and it's doing extremely well on its own. The story of his this amazing experiment began in 1960, on Easter Sunday, when David decided that it would be fun to start a bottle garden. Since they were a bit of a craze back then, he wanted to see for himself what the fuss was all about. So out of idle curiosity, he got himself a 10-gallon globular bottle, poured some compost at the bottom and used a piece of wire to carefully lower a seedling in. Then he put in just about a quarter of a pint of water, and believe it or not, he only watered the plant once more in 1972. Never again after that. It has been alive and kicking for the past 54 years. The plant that David placed in the bottle is an indoor variety of perennial spiderworts that also go by the Latin name of Tradescantia. The bottle itself is tightly sealed; David only needs to rotate it around often so it grows evenly towards the light. "Otherwise, it's the definition of low-maintenance," he said. "I've never pruned it, it just seems to have grown to the limits of the bottle." So what makes the spiderwort so special that it can grow with almost no outside help? The secret is really pretty simple -- the plant has been extremely successful at creating its own mini ecosystem. Using the little water that David gave the plant 42 years ago, it has managed to get a water cycle going inside the bottle. The water is taken up by the roots, released into the air through transpiration, condenses down into the potting mixture and the cycle repeats itself. Through the glass, the leaves are able absorb as much light as they need to photosynthesize into energy that helps the plant grow. The oxygen created during photosynthesis also puts enough moisture in the air for it to 'rain' back down on the plant. As the leaves age, they drop to the bottom and rot, helping to create carbon dioxide (also needed for photosynthesis) and nutrients that are absorbed by the roots. At night, when there is no sunlight, the plant breaks down nutrients and uses cellular respiration to stay alive. The bottle has lived for 27 years in the same spot in David's retirement home in Cranleigh, Surrey. He took a photograph of it to a BBC radio show called 'Gardener's Question Time', to check with the experts if the plant was of any horticultural interest. And that's when it gained the media's attention. According to garden designer and television presenter Chris Beardshaw, "It's a great example of the way in which a plant is able to recycle, it's the perfect cycle of life." Beardshaw pointed out that this process was one of the reasons for NASA's interest in taking plants into space. "Plants operate as very good scrubbers, taking out pollutants in the air, so that a space station can effectively become self-sustaining. This is a great example of just how pioneering plants are and how they will persist given the opportunity," he said. But not everyone is enthusiastic about bottle gardens. Like organic gardener Bob Flowerdew, who said: "It's wonderful but not for me, thanks. I can't see the point. I can't smell it, I can't eat it." David has no choice but to agree with Bob. David did say that the bottle is incredibly dull and doesn't really do anything, but he's still excited to see just how long it will last. He hopes to pass it on to his future generations, and if they aren't interested, to the Royal Horticultural Society. David's bottle garden is essentially one of the best examples of nature's recycling process. And the wonderful part is that it should work with almost any plant, not just spiderworts. All you need to create your own is a large glass container with a wide neck and some good quality potting compost, deep enough for the plant to sink in its roots. Introduce very few tiny specimens of the plant of your choice, move them into position with kitchen tongs, water them ever-so-lightly, seal the jar, and place it in a well-lit spot. That's about it -- you've got yourself a beautiful bottle garden that will thrive for years to come.

Today we're featuring an amazing tiny house that is a modern version of a traditional Danish allotment hut. Back in the day, allotment huts were owned by people living in apartments who didn't have a garden, and who could then use the allotment to grow fruit and vegetables, and to enjoy the fresh air. The house is 236 sq ft, and every square feet is used for a purpose, with many design details. It was build 9 years ago by Karen Jelnes and her husband before they had children; after they had kids they build bunk beds on top of their own bed, which is a really clever solution. The house is really beautiful and unique, and they build it small on purpose to make more space in the garden to grow vegetables, berries and fruit that the whole family can enjoy! Vining plants can be trained to grow on a trellis to increase plant density. This year I've replaced my self-watering totes with a nice SIP raised bed. This allows me to construct a much better trellis system for my vegetables! Here are some basic garden / trellis supplies that I've found to be indispensable: - Twine Plant Clips: http://amzn.to/2v820Lj (Amazon) - Jute Cord: http://amzn.to/2uyLhDU (Amazon) - Polyester Netting: http://amzn.to/2t5AhcN (Amazon) - 4-Way Tee PVC Fitting: http://amzn.to/2vspqKZ (Amazon) - PVC Coated Welded Wire: http://amzn.to/2utsgSE (Amazon) - Green Stretch Tie: http://amzn.to/2thLU4t (Amazon) - Turnbuckles: http://amzn.to/2upt37m (Amazon) - 16 Gauge Galvanized Steel Wire: http://amzn.to/2tvBYzu (Amazon) - 12 Gauge Galvanized Steel Wire: http://amzn.to/2uyPdo7 (Amazon) I've been diligently pruning and training annual veggies to grow up several plant support systems. They're going vertical, greatly increasing yield within a small space. This includes beans, peas, spaghetti squash, cantaloupe and even watermelon! I'm also training fruit bearing perennials using various trellis and espalier techniques. My vining or espalier plants include air potatoes, passion fruits, currants, plums, Asian pears and a hardy kiwi. In this video we take a closer look at how fence posts, U-posts and T-posts can be used for plant training in your edible landscape or backyard orchard. They can be combined with polyester netting, galvanized wire, welded wire or lattices. Some systems will support more weight than others. Some will last much longer. They may be used to for aesthetics, creating a nice privacy screen. Or they may be barely visible, allowing plants to grow unobstructed. Growing in conventional raised beds can be highly productive. But many veggies perform even better in self-watering beds and containers. When combined with effective trellising, you'll be amazed at how many vegetables you can squeeze into a small space! We've finished harvesting a bumper crop of strawberries. We've enjoyed a steady trickle of raspberries and alpine strawberries. And now the blueberries and aronia have ripened. Our passion fruit has already begun to flower which means we'll have fruit even sooner than last year. I'm looking forward to watermelons and cantaloupe! :-D #RaisedBedGardening #UrbanGardening #VerticalGardening #SelfWateringGarden #BackyardOrchard ================================== Support AlboPepper.com and get some cool garden shirts that I designed myself: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/albopepper/ ==================================

11 Plants That Repel Mosquitoes Citronella Chances are, you’ve heard of this one before- it’s one of the most common ingredients in most mosquito repellents. Strange enough though, many people don’t even know that citronella is actually a plant! Citronella is a beautiful perennial clumping grass that emits a strong aroma. That aroma masks other scents, and keeps mosquitoes from being attracted to things located around it. The citronella plant has a much stronger aroma than other mosquito repellents that contain citronella, so it is a great choice. Citronella is very easy to grow, and can get to be a very tall 5 or 6 feet high! You can grow citronella in pots and place it around a porch or patio, or you can plant it directly in a yard or garden bed. It’s a great choice for repelling mosquitoes naturally. Lemon Balm Another great choice for a mosquito repelling plant is lemon balm. A member of the mint family, the plant also known as horsemint and beebalm is a very easy plant for beginning gardeners to grow- even if you don’t have a green thumb! Lemon Balm is a very hardy plant, it resists drought, and it grows well even in shade. It is a very fast growing and sometimes aggressive plant, so you might want to contain it to a pot, where you can move it to wherever you like to ensure that it doesn’t take over your garden! An added bonus? Catnip Your feline friends will be happy to know that catnip is a great mosquito deterrent! In fact, in a 2010 study, researchers found that catnip is 10 times more effective than DEET, the ingredient commonly found in bug repellents. It is a very easy plant to grow, and if you have cats in the house, they will surely be happy to have it around. However, be careful not to plant catnip in with other flowers, veggies, or herbs if you have cats around your garden. Marigolds A bright, hardy annual plant, marigolds are a great choice for repelling mosquitoes. Marigolds contain Pyrethrum, an ingredient found in many insect repellents, and they have a unique aroma which bugs find repulsive. The flowers themselves are beautiful and can make a great border or addition to any flower bed! Basil Calling all cooks! Want a double whammy when it comes to mosquito protection? Plant some basil! Not only will you have a quick and easy mosquito repellent, you will also have a delicious fresh herb on hand to add to all of your favorite recipes! There are many different varieties of basil around, so feel free to experiment and find the ones that you like best. Many expert gardeners recommend trying lemon basil or cinnamon basil to deter insects. Lavender You probably know that lavender is a gorgeous purple flowering plant with a soothing, calming scent. But, did you know that it is also a natural mosquito repellent? Grow it indoors near a sunny window, or outside in your garden or flower bed to keep the bugs away. While you’re at it, make a delicious herbal tea, or use lavender to fill your home with a wonderful calming aroma. Peppermint Most bugs despise the smell and taste of peppermint, so planting it around your home is a great way to keep them from dropping by uninvited! Plus, if you do happen to get bitten, peppermint leaves rubbed directly onto the skin make a great bite relief treatment! An added bonus is the wonderful minty smell that makes a delicious addition to food and beverages! Garlic Unfortunately for all of us who love Italian food, studies have shown that EATING garlic does not repel mosquitoes. (Unless, however, you were to eat a HUGE amount!) However, having garlic around DOES! Make sure to add some garlic to your flower bed or vegetable garden for added protection! Pennyroyal The adorable pennyroyal flower is a natural deterrent for mosquitoes! Make sure to plant some around your flowerbeds. Pennyroyal plants also make great groundcovers, and they attract a plethora of beautiful butterflies. Some people even use pennyroyal to flavor certain fish dishes. As you can see, this plant has plenty of benefits! Rosemary Rosemary is a beautiful flowering plant that is often used to flavor lamb or fish dishes, but did you know that it is also a natural mosquito repellent? It’s perfect to add to your herb garden or flowerbed to keep bugs away, and it even attracts butterflies! Geranium This beautiful flowering plant is a great choice for mosquito repellent. When planted in a hanging container, the colorful blooms will cascade over the side of the pot, providing a beautiful visual piece as well as a very useful bug repellent! As you can see, there are many different plants out there that can help to keep bugs away! Next time you reach for the chemical bug spray, take a minute and think again, and choose something more natural! Source - http://www.naturallivingideas.com/11-plants-that-repel-mosquitoes/

Behind a small health food store in Greenville, SC lies a large unused plot of land. That is, it was unoccupied until Bo Cable's desire to help his community resulted in the creation of The Generous Garden Project. Now it is the site of a flurry of activity and a very successful vegetable garden. After a life spent in the publishing industry, Bo started The Generous Garden Project after a simple idea he wrote down just would not go away. After being drawn to Greenville because of its high level of volunteerism and community involvement, Bo spent a lot of time thinking how he might be able to give back to his community. Although he'd never thought of himself as a 'green thumb,' Bo's childhood on the farm gave him the experience and work ethic that helped him make The Generous Garden Project what it is today. The Generous Garden is not a community garden in the traditional sense. While volunteers and community members grow and nurture the garden's herbs and vegetables - such as kale, broccoli, and zucchini - they are not the ones who will be enjoying them. All of the 100% organic produce goes to local food banks, shelters and single-parent families. Bo saw from volunteering at shelters that most of the vegetables were frozen or canned. Very few shelters are able to offer fresh food and instead have to rely mostly on canned goods. The Generous Garden's fresh, organic vegetables not only add color, but also nutrition to shelter meals across the Greenville area. The project occupies a sizable plot with its own compost heap with which they fertilize their crops and a worm farm to add nutrients into the soil. A generous donor provided two greenhouses, one of which is fervently being built to provide shelter for the next crop's seedlings. The area that is currently planted is just a fraction of the land they rent. Bo is planning ahead to the time when they will have cleared and prepared even more of the fields to grow on. There is more to Bo's plan however. As well as growing vegetables and herbs for people who are not able to afford such fresh, organic fare, he wants to teach people the art of gardening. By inviting school groups as well as adults to the garden, he hopes to instill in them both the ability and the desire to grow food themselves. 'Even if someone only has a window box, I can show them how to grow vegetables,' he says. Bo started the project thinking that it would be an excellent weekend activity. His plan of spending a leisurely few hours in the garden on Saturdays and Sundays has turned into a full-time job. Although he owns a web-development and marketing company, he now goes to the garden every day of the week, for several hours each day. The Generous Garden Project started in April 2011 and in its first year, it grew and distributed 32,000 lbs of produce, the equivalent of over 21,000 meals. Bo's plans are to continue expanding their yield while not compromising the quality of their produce. His hope is that the concept could be taken to other cities across the country, bringing the benefits of fresh produce and a communal love of gardening to communities just like Greenville. For more information on The Generous Garden Project, and to find out how to volunteer for the project or to donate gardening supplies, visit their website and their Facebook page.
