Eastlake furniture, normally in walnut, normally with spoon carved designs, was made primarily in the U. S. in the 1870's and 1880's. During our generally depressed market in Victorian furniture over the past 20 years, Eastlake has held up fairly well. The style really owes very little to Charles Eastlake, the British architect & writer, who wrote his influential "Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details" in 1868. American furniture makers used his name to market a style which was particularly American. In this week's show we'll examine several pieces of Eastlake furniture to see how they fit in with the furniture designs of the late Victorian era. The iAntique Classifieds currently show 10 pieces of Eastlake furniture: 6 have recently sold, and 4 are currently for sale. The style sells very well in Denver, Colorado, where I am. One reason, I think, for that is that Denver still has many houses built in the 1870's-'80's. Some are in the Queen Anne style, which is particularly well suited for Eastlake furniture. - Gary

Thomas Day was a free man of color living and working in Milton NC in the early to mid 1800's. He is considered to be a master craftsman and innovator and owned the largest cabinet making shop in NC around 1850. The Thomas Day House and Union Tavern is where he lived and where his shop was located. It was partially destroyed by fire and has now been restored. A small group of Mid West Tool Collectors Association members came together to design and build an authentic, museum quality reproduction workbench for the TDH and provided represntative period tools for the display.

There are plenty of different styles of furniture on the market, but with so many terms getting thrown around it’s hard to know what is what! Here we have broken down the most commonly used terms to give you a hand with choosing your ideal furniture style. Read on to get tips on how to recognize the differences between furniture styles that are often confused: • Antique vs. Vintage • Traditional vs. Rustic • Art Deco vs. Retro • Shabby Chic vs. French provincial • Modern vs. Contemporary Plus we’ve pulled extra information for you on each of the styles. Antique vs. Vintage Antique furniture includes pieces from an earlier period. It is often crafted out of wood and its age, condition, unique features and rarity determine how collectible the piece is and therefore, how high its value. Genuine antiques are, by definition, at least 100 years old and often have to be purchased from experienced dealers to guarantee authenticity. Vintage furniture on the other hand is between twenty and one hundred years old and is easily recognisable as belonging to a particular period within that time. Once you know what you’re looking for, spotting it is easier than it sounds! Traditional vs. Rustic Traditional furniture is formal furniture from the Victorian period. It combines features from the Queen Anne period – graceful and elaborately decorated, Chippendale style – artistic embellishment and straightened out lines and Sheraton style – delicate pieces with tapered legs and contrasting inlays. Together this creates a comfortable and warm environment with hand crafted, dark timber pieces, over stuffed, plush sofas and elegant fabrics. Rustic style furniture is influenced by many different styles coming together to create warm, natural and honest interiors. If furniture is rustic it will often be made of a warm timber or a natural material like animal hide, cotton or linen. It has a worn and homely appearance and is often more relaxed then formal. Scandinavian and industrial furniture design are usually synonymous with being rustic. Art Deco vs. Retro Art Deco is an eclectic style that combines Machine Age imagery and materials with traditional crafts. The style is characterized by geometric and angular shapes, materials like chrome, glass, shiny fabrics, mirrors and mirror tiles as well as stylized images of aeroplanes, cars and skyscrapers. With the success of The Great Gatsby movie and TV series like Boardwalk Empire, Art Deco is back in full force. Retro furniture can be harder to define. When we think of Retro design we usually conjure up ideas of mod, geometric shapes in teal, yellow and brown or flashbacks to the kitchen from the Brady Bunch with its tulip table and orange splash back. Technically, retro furniture design is defined as aspects of modern culture which imitate trends, modes and fashions of the recent past which had come to be unfashionable. Shabby Chic vs. French provincial French provincial furniture is exactly what its title depicts. Characterised by the styles popular in the French provinces in the 17th and 18th century, this furniture style has a classic yet country feel to it. Ladder back dining chairs with woven seats, simple scalloped carving, large armoires or French sideboards with decorative moldings are all key features of this style. Shabby Chic furniture, while similar, is more casual and often has a distressed appearance. The Furniture is typically white with a feminine and romantic feel. Like French provincial, this style originated from country houses but incorporates more up-cycling and salvaging of furniture. Modern vs. Contemporary Modern furniture originated under the modernist movement in the early 1900’s. It often combines leather, vinyl, steel, moulded plywood and plastics with a monochromatic colour scheme to create sleek and stylish interiors. Big name designers like Herman Miller, Hans Knoll and Charles and Ray Eames are the faces for this design era and you’ll often find replicas of their modern furniture designs on the market today. The Barcelona chair is a timeless example of modern design. Modern furniture design is a defined style and will always refer to the modernist period of time, contemporary furniture design however, refers to furniture that is popular and used now, in the present. Furniture will often be described as “modern and contemporary”, which is where the confusion comes in between these two styles. -------------------------------------------------- ►WELCOME TO HOME&IDEAS CHANNEL •Subscribe to HOME&IDEAS YouTube Channel : https://goo.gl/kmXXvu -------------------------------------------------- ►CONNECT WITH HOME & IDEAS ! •Google+ : https://goo.gl/5oYKeb •Twitter : https://goo.gl/xahrkn •Facebook : https://goo.gl/WS7XTq •Instagram : https://goo.gl/g9MQi6 •Pinterest : https://goo.gl/fTko4U

http://www.newbyhouseinteriors.co.uk/ When my husband decided to start working from home, I wanted to surprise him with a new desk. Because we live in a pre-Victorian, Grade II listed building, it couldnt just be any old desk. Were not snobs, but we have always tried to furnish our house sympathetically, choose Regency or Victorian styles where possible. Because clients would come to the house, I thought a lovely antique desk would create exactly the right impression. But what I didnt bargain on was the price! I knew exactly what I wanted Id watched the antiques programmes on TV often enough. Its often referred to as a partners desk, double pedestal with a tooled leather top. I wanted a darkish wood, possibly mahogany. And I found it too in my local auction room. It went for over £5,000! Needless to say, I had to stop bidding long before then. I was disappointed, but not daunted. We have several reproduction pieces in the house and most people cant tell them from the real thing, so I decided to try that route. I found a website for Newby House Interiors that made quality reproduction antique furniture, and whats more, they had the exact desk I was after. I found a reproduction antique pedestal desk that would be perfect for my husbands office. It came in a choice of mahogany or yew wood finishes and was very finely crafted. They had not attempted to give it a distressed look but it was polished to a high sheen for durability as well as smartness. The craftsmanship was evident throughout, from the dovetailed drawers to the attractive moulding to the sides and back. I chose the green leather writing surface which went so well with the mahogany, but I could have had burgundy, gold or brown. What I liked particularly about it was that whilst it looked exactly like a genuine antique desk, it was actually a modern computer desk with a cleverly concealed slide-out tray for the keyboard, though as my husband mostly uses a laptop, Im not sure how he will use that. Because the desk cost about eight times less than the one I had seen in the auction room, I argued that I could also afford a new chair and saw a very nice captains desk chair on the same site. It looked so comfortable that I wondered if my husband would ever be able to leave it. I had seen the short video on the website which talked me through the high quality finish of the desk so I had absolutely no worries about what I was buying. I didnt have to worry about getting it into the new office either because the pedestals were detachable for ease of movement. You could certainly see from the video the level of careful craftsmanship that went into the desk and I felt sure all the other reproduction furniture items would be of the same high quality. I was very glad that I hadnt found what I wanted at auction because that site was certainly a worthwhile find. I made a note of several other pieces I was interested in for other rooms in the house and will certainly be visiting it again. For quality and value, it couldnt be beaten and you even get free delivery, which you dont get at the local auction room. Its a site I would definitely recommend if you are making a statement in your house with top quality reproduction furniture.

Emma (version 3) Jane AUSTEN Jane Austen famously described Emma Woodhouse, the title character of her 1815 novel, as "a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like." Yet generations of readers have loved Emma, as much for her blunders as for her wit and vivacity. Emma, "handsome, clever, and rich," has nothing else to do but try to pair off her friends, and she consistently mis-reads the relationships and situations around her as much as she mis-reads her own heart. The novel features a wonderful cast of characters, including Emma's hypochondriac father, the odiously prideful Mrs. Elton, the mysterious and reserved Jane Fairfax, and Miss Bates, who never stops talking.
