Routine Healthcare for Horses

13:08
The Importance of Maintaining the Health of Your Horse It is important for a horse keeper to know the normal behaviour and disposition of individual horses in their care and to be able to recognise when something may be wrong. Subtle early signs of ill health are easily missed, yet early detection is essential – the more quickly appropriate remedial care is taken, or treatment applied, the better. As a matter of routine, every horse should be closely observed and checked daily for signs of injury and ill health. Physical signs and changes in behaviour should be viewed in combination, and considered against what is normal for the individual horse concerned. 1 - Vital Signs 2 - General Health a. Digitizing The Family Doctor: Put Care Back Into Healthcare | Nicholas Glover, Sr. | TEDxCharleston

09:38
Sixty years ago, patients— on their own— weren't any better at following their doctor's advice than they are now. But, as Nick Glover shares from personal experience, your then family doctor could readily encourage or cajole one into following the Rx. A lot of factors including the vast increase in doctors' caseloads have done away with those days. Glover presents an idea to address the significant health risk where patients ignore their doctors' significant guidance. It's a solution to engage patients, so they get to the doctor and take the health recommendations needed to ensure they continue to live. Nick Glover has long been influencing communications. Channel One and the Medical News Network (which morphed into what is now known as WebMD) were two vehicles created under his leadership. Nick then shifted his focus to the venture capital field and began advising start-ups. Five years ago, the 11th generation Charlestonian joined others to launch an innovative system, which improves how people get medical information and assistance. From his commitment to improving health, Nick and his wife, a clinical psychologist, founded a non-profit where horses help humanity. AGam in Kansas - Horse Care 101 - Oct. 29, 2015

04:50
(Chris) Hello and welcome to Horsin' Around. I'm Dr. Chris Blevins at Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center and today joined by Pattie Stalder, welcome. (Pattie) Hi Chris, nice to see you. (Chris) Pattie Stalder is the Director of the Kansas Horse Council. (Pattie) Correct. (Chris) And I think the Kansas Horse Council does a great thing for the horse industry here in Kansas. And they have some great events that are going to be coming up here. One being what we call the Horse Care 101 and then of course always Equifest. But let's talk about the Horse Care 101 seminar. It's something that's been going on, how long has it been going? (Pattie) This is our fourth year Chris. And we are thrilled to have the Kansas State University of College of Vet Medicine here to partner with us to bring this wonderful event to horse owners in Kansas. (Chris) And it is always such...it gets more and more popularity it seems every year and we actually sold out last year. And so I think people need to make sure that they know where to go and when it is, so let's give 'em the information about that. Where's it gonna be at? And when is it gonna be? (Pattie) OK. November 14th. It's a Saturday. It's not a game day, no traffic issues. It will be easy to get in and out. And we are going to change it a little this year in that we generally start the event in Mosier Hall and Frick Auditorium. We will be there this year, but we're going to begin in Weber Arena, because we're going to have live demo. K-State rodeo coach Casy Winn will be there with a horse doing a demonstration on ground manners, basic safety instructions, just a general education on being around horses and handling them and so we'll start in Weber, we'll have some morning snacks there and then we will come a short little walk over here to our regular place in Mosier Hall and Frick Auditorium, we'll have lunch there. (Chris) And I think that people are like, whoa I know Manhattan, I kind of know where you're talking about, but they can probably get more information as far as a map and maybe even where we'll park. There will be signs I'd imagine, that day too. And we say Mosier, that's the Vet School. And Weber is part of the Animal Sciences and it's a big arena. And so where would they go to find more information maybe even where to register? (Pattie) The easiest place is just to go to the Horse Council website. It's very easy kansashorsecouncil.com. And there will be a link right there where you can call to register or you can download a form and mail it in. But I do encourage folks to get it done because like you said, last year we had to turn some people away because of the fire code in Frick Auditorium; we can only have 200 people in there. And we can't change that, so please if you're interested come and get signed up quickly. (Chris) Now you talked about Casy and doing some ground manners. What are some other sneak peeks of what's going to be going on for the day? (Pattie) Well when we come back over to Mosier Hall we're going to have Dr. Liz Sanchez who will do a presentation on radiographs and lameness and she will also have that same topic in our hands on lab that afternoon. And one of the things that will be interesting is that we have a group of people that will do a panel discussion on different equine activities in our state that might not be so well known. We're going to have representatives from the fox hunting organizations. We'll have Ashley Duda from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and we're going to have a Kansas Hunter Jumper representative. We're going to have somebody from NATRC and also Back Country Horseman. And the big thing is we're going to have our kids activities over in Weber in the afternoon. So, if they don't want to stay there for the presentations they can spend the afternoon with the Kansas Horseman's Association doing activities in Weber. (Chris) This is all great and I think that's something to remember, it's for the whole family. So, there's stuff for kids to learn, stuff for adults, have labs, a lot of extra information. It's a jam packed one day, and it fills up fast. (Pattie) Right, $15 for kids, $30 for adults, includes our lunch and snacks and great door prizes. (Chris) That is great. Well thank you Pattie. I'm Dr. Chris Blevins at Horsin' Around and we will see you around.

Removal of a molar tooth root fragment in a horse - tooth root abscess part 2

05:06
This horse was featured on a previous video. The tooth had fractured secondary to dental decay. The tooth had fragmented and had been partially removed. Instead of subjecting the horse to a general anaesthetic, which carries a small but significant risk, it was sedated using a morphine drip. The alveolar socket was anaesthetised by placing a maxillary nerve block and a gingival block. The tooth root fragment & alveolar socket was examined using an oroscope. This was also used to facilitate sectioning of the tooth root using an 3mm bone cutting bur. This was only partially successful as only several small fragments were removed. The decision was made to repulse the remaining tooth root fragment. Local anaesthetic was infiltrated under the skin in a position over the tooth root. A Coomer bone drill was used to drill a hole in the caudal maxillary sinus. A blunt ended trocar pin was placed over the tooth root and a mallet was used to drive the fragment through the alveolar socket. Radiograph were taken of the molar arcade revealing two further fragments (cementomas) located in the alveolar socket. These were relatively easily removed under oroscopic guidance. The resultant wound and sinus was flushed using sterile saline. The skin wound was closed with staples. The surgery had left hole (fistula) between the oral cavity (mouth) and sinus. This was packed with dental putty to prevent a sinusitis occurring due to food contamination from the mouth. These wounds can take up to 6 months to heal and need repacking regularly with dental putty.

Heavy Horse Grooming and Rugs

21:19
What is Grooming and Rugs for Heavy Horse Some suppose that grooming is merely a matter of prettying the animal. It would be more appropriately termed ‘cleaning the skin’, essential to the general health and condition of the domesticated horse. In fact, if grooming does not play its important role in maintaining condition and promoting health, then the horse’s superficial appearance will leave much to be desired. Overall, the reasons for grooming heavy horses, and the general principles and practices, are much the same as for other types being worked and shown. However, certain factors associated with heavy horses, such as the tradition of wintering out, their size, and the working and showing regime, require owners to have a thorough understanding of grooming if they are to produce horses in the peak of condition. 1 - Routine Grooming 2 - Grooming A Heavy Horse For Showing 3 - Strapping 4 - Washing 5 - Rugs 6 - Heavy Horse Stable Rugs 7 - Heavy Horse Anti-Sweat Rugs Research and Sources: https://www.heavyhorses.org.uk Music: Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds

How the power of Seaver works

00:45
Seaver designs smart equipment for equestrian sports. We are creating the first connected objects dedicated to horse performance and health care. Often there’s a general lack of precise metrics and scientific approach in horse care. Performance training is very subjective, based on the instinct and experience of the breeder, coach or rider. The same goes for the horse’s fitness: constant monitoring and injury prevention issues are becoming more and more important for passionate riders. With our technology, we want to enhance traditional training methods for equestrian sports – attentive riders, coaches and breeders will be able to introduce technology and precise metrics when preparing their training and competitions, all while taking care of their horse’s health. ActiVet Pro Multi Radiance ActiVet Pro Horse Case studies Venn Healthcare

05:45
Hugh interviews Reay Campbell, proprietor of Caledonia Dressage Horses on the success with her ActiVet Pro, they discuss 3 separate cases. The main case study focuses on a German “Warm Blood” foal born with a Ruptured Gastrocnemius Muscle where the veterinary prognosis was very poor, the foal went on to make a full recovery with the help of the class 1 laser combined with massage and splinting. They also touch on Scarlett, a Super Mare who was diagnosed with an ovarian tumour last year, she needed it removing for her own health and to ensure she was able to continue producing embryos for their breeding programme. (full video on scarlett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VliieSpqmFs) Finally they discuss a very nasty gash on the head of another breeding mare, which no-one knew how it had happened. All 3 cases made a full recovery. "For any wound, including diabetic ulcerated wounds, using the blue light therapy of 465nm, a photolytic release of Nitric Oxide from nitrated proteins is observed indicating that they are light acceptors and signal transducers. This makes our blue light therapy especially effective in wound recovery treatments (as seen above), prevention of MRSA, inflammatory treatments, skin conditions and tackling other bacteria and viruses" We are absolutely delighted with the extraordinary wound recovery processes brought about by the photobiomodulation and blue light therapy offered by the Multi Radiance Class 1 lasers" Hugh Fullerton Smith Veterinary Director. We know that the power of Multi Radiance Class 1 photobiomodulation (definition = “a non thermal process, only chemical and physical") is bringing about great results in pain therapy and wound recovery. But what about musculoskeletal and general wellbeing? How can ‘super-pulsed’, Class 1 laser play a significant role in this? 1. First and foremost, “Class 1” refers to the safety of the device. It can be used in any clinic or any public event, without either patient or practitioner having to wear goggles as the ‘super-pulsing’ (working like a high speed camera shutter, delivering pulsed light in the nanosecond range, as opposed to dangerous “continuous wave” lasers such as Class IV) will not cause any vaporisation of the eye. It will also not burn the epidermis like all other lasers. 2. Powerful Class IV lasers promote just that - power, but in effect, all Class IV laser manufacturers have had to ‘dumb the power down’ to attempt to compete with Multi Radiance Class 1 lasers. Despite claims to the contrary, increased power does not improve the penetrative quality of the light. Simply put, penetrating the skin barrier cannot be compensated by a higher powered output as it will cause the light to be absorbed superficially and more rapidly, leading to a greater heat generation. 3. Multi Radiance lasers (Russian space program technology) generates 65% less power at the surface than Class IV or any continuous wave laser, yet delivers 5X more energy to target tissue. This has proved critical in the treatment of a German “Warm Blood” foal born with a Ruptured Gastrocnemius Muscle where the veterinary prognosis was very poor. Snow was untrampled and ground was soft underneath and they really enjoyed the space. You can see how the old Canadian gelding takes a lot longer to get going! He loves to roll - when you're built perfectly round ... it's easy!

Kelowna General Hospital - KGH Health Care Issues 2014 - YouTube

03:13
KGH offers high level medical care, or does it. There are many patients who would say that based on experience Kelowna General Hospital has a lot of issues that need attention. Much of what we hear about KGH focuses on new state of the art equipment but I wonder is that at the expense of patient care? We have seen a lot that puts patient care in question but seeing feces on wheelchairs, floors and on patients stoops to a new low. Elderly patients are washed at least once a week and occasionally 2 times, is that enough for someone who is not able to fend for themselves. Imagine if you did that to a baby, our elderly are just as important and a clean environment can only increase patient wellness. One more thing, just this past November KGH discharged a patient (who was brought in by ambulance) in the middle of the night with only pants and a hospital gown on. No transportation was provided on the cold night, only a bus token.

ECN S1E5 Clinical Trials by Dr Stewart

07:34
EQUINE CLINICAL NUTRITION | CLINICAL TRIALS BY DR STEWART JENQUINE | ECN SERIES 1 | EPISODE 5 When developing veterinary products and clinical formulations, it’s critical that the scientific research is combined with clinical trials. An understanding of equine physiology and the impacts of nutrition is the starting point – the theory. When this is followed with clinical trials in affected horses, the science is confirmed and proven to be helpful and effective in the field – ie real horses living in the real world. Dr Jennifer Stewart, BVSc BSc PhD Dip BEP, the founder of Jenquine, is an equine veterinarian and consultant nutritionist. Jennie has over thirty-five years’ experience as an equine veterinarian. She is also a consultant nutritionist and has formulated feeds, custom mixes and supplements for leading international horse feed manufacturers, studs and stables in Australia, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey and the UAE. She is passionate about equine nutrition and its role in the management, treatment and prevention of many equine diseases. She is committed to bringing ‘science to the feed bin’. Magnesium Supplementation: Everything You Need To Know About Dosing Magnesium, Timing Magnesium, Fo

01:19:29
Listen to the full episode here:: http://bengreenfieldfitness.com/mag Magnesium deficiency is running rampant. Many experts estimate that 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient. And, a major contributing factor is the presence of excess calcium in the body mainly coming from the extreme ratio difference in common foods such as: fortified orange juice (27:1), cheese (26:1), yogurt (11:1), dairy (7:1) and the very commonly used antacids (300:1). Other common contributing factors include: -Fluoride -Processed foods -Alcohol -Coffee -Sugar -Stress -Medications When should you take magnesium? How do you test your magnesium levels or know if you have a deficiency? It’s critical to get high enough doses of magnesium to compensate for the fact that our typical diet runs low on this vital mineral. But fact is, although magnesium is an incredibly important mineral, there are many unanswered questions and confusion around magnesium, so I though it was high time to have my friend and nutrition researcher Thomas DeLauer back on the show. I first interviewed Thomas DeLauer in the episode The Ultimate Guide To Quelling Inflammation: Why Your Curcumin May Not Work, Surprising Effects Of Ginger Oil, Vegan Fish Oil Options & Much More! I then interviewed him again in the episode Does Alcohol Really Make You Fat, Which Alcohol Is Healthiest, Hidden Ingredients In Alcohol & Much More: The Ultimate Alcohol Damage Mitigation Guide. Thomas is one of the leading experts in the world of chronic inflammation as well as the response of the human body to a low-carb diet. He is noted for his personal transformation from a 280-pound overweight corporate executive to not only being on the cover of health and fitness magazines worldwide but pioneering some of the mainstream awareness of auto-immune diseases and inflammation in general! Thomas has been highlighted in over 20 magazines showcasing his transformation and has been featured worldwide on the cover of Ironman Magazine, Muscle and Performance Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, ICON Magazine, Platform Magazine and Ironman Japan. His background is in Sports Psychology, although it is this passion for psychology coupled with a career in healthcare as a physician recruiter and owner of an ancillary lab services company that sparked his love for nutritional science and what makes the body tick. He is currently working on a project in the 2nd phase of trials with Doctors at UCLA to identify a strain of bacteria that may help modulate inflammation within the body. Residing near Santa Barbara, California, with his wife, three dogs, two horses, and 11 month old son. Thomas promotes a lifestyle of living as close to the earth as possible to obtain the best possible results while still achieving maximum performance in every possible area of life. What form of magnesium is best, and are different forms better for different needs, like sleep vs. brain vs. digestion? In this episode, Thomas and I also discuss MagSRT®, a product Thomas is helping to develop, is the only time-release, high-potency magnesium supplement with peer-reviewed clinical trials to back up it's efficacy. MagSRT®  was evaluated in the Scottsdale Magnesium Study (SMS), a placebo-controlled, human clinical trial of 91 participants. The study measured Serum Magnesium, Red Blood Cell (RBC) Magnesium, and Magnesium Deficiency symptoms. The results are published in the peer-reviewed Journal of American College of Nutrition (JACN). It is a Sustained Release Technology (SRT) magnesium in a super-absorbable, premium organic form called dimagnesium malate, along with an active form of Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) and Vitamin B6 (P5P) During our discussion, you'll discover: -Is there a way to supplement your magnesium levels without unpleasant side effects such as loose stool and "constarrhea"?...11:20 Magnesium is "hydrophilic" meaning it attracts water.  It creates "passive diffusion" where it attracts water into the intestine. There's nothing to regulate how fast the water enters the small or large intestine. The type of magnesium (ex. epsom salt vs. magnesium citrate) one takes makes a big difference in how fast it will attract water. -A few of the more popular forms of magnesium, and which one is optimal for the varying functions we might like to use it...13:40 Magnesium citrate: high bio availability; creates a laxative effect. Magnesium chloride: Typically contains only 10-15% magnesium. It's used to chelate other minerals such as iron and other heavy metals. These two factors are why magnesium chloride is recommended for detoxes. Topical magnesium (epsom salt, etc.): Gets absorbed into the serum, but not red blood cells. Doesn't have the same laxative qualities. Only 1% of magnesium is ever measured, and that's in the serum and blood levels. Elevated magnesium levels in the serum means it's likely pulling it from blood and plasma, thus decreasing levels there. A high reading in magnesium can actually mean you're low in magn

PRO FEET also consists of naturally sourced antioxidants, these have been researched and results show that they remove excess toxins from the horses system and therefore provide holistic support to the entire system. TEDxWestlake - Molly Dominguez - "Veterinary Medicine: Human, animal and environmental health"

05:06
TEDxWestlake - July 12, 2012 Our first TEDxWestlake explored the accelerating change in the world around us. This change is largely driven by the power of the digital infrastructure built over the last few decades. William Gibson has remarked: "The future is already here -- it's just unevenly distributed." While we can't predict the future, we tried to uncover and mine some of these veins. We were lucky to have speakers from a wide array of disciplines, from kinetic art to philosophy to hybrid social ventures, to come share their stories with our audience of business students and innovators, and help us wonder about what might lie ahead. As a dual-degree Veterinary -- Business student at the University of Pennsylvania, Molly Dominguez is challenging the future role of the veterinary profession. In the United States, a veterinarian is traditionally perceived as a doctor for dogs, cats and horses. Yet, during Molly's six years as an officer on active duty in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, including a deployment in Iraq, she learned about the global leadership of veterinary medicine in promoting political, economic, and public health security. Drawing from these experiences, she captures the essence of why spreading the capabilities and expertise of the veterinary profession is critical for the United States' foreign policy over the next decade. Molly is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and received her Master's in International Relations from Oklahoma University. Her husband, Augie Dominguez, is currently deployed to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. ECN S1E4 Oxalates Soluble and Insoluble

03:47
EQUINE CLINICAL NUTRITION | OXALATES SOLUBLE AND INSOLUBLE JENQUINE | ECN SERIES 1 | EPISODE 4 Horses grazing subtropical pastures are at risk of osteoporosis. There are 2 types of oxalates (one is insoluble and the other is soluble in the horse’s gut) but both cause calcium deficiency. Subtropical grasses combine minerals with oxalate for storage. Calcium-oxalate is insoluble and indigestible in the horse’s gut. Other mineral-oxalate combinations are soluble in the horses gut – these soluble complexes dissolve in the gut – releasing the mineral and free oxalate. The free, soluble oxalate binds to any free calcium in the diet (from hard-feed or supplements) making it insoluble and indigestible. Two types of oxalates – one binds calcium in the plant, the other binds calcium in the gut. Dr Jennifer Stewart’s Bone Formula Forte and Calsorb Forte contain chelated calcium, protected from oxalates. See Episode 7 for more information.
