SUBSCRIBE If you like my channel: ► https://bit.ly/2J5HP7j This is Karen, and she wants to tell you about one of the sad episodes of her life. Karen is 15, and some time ago she was about to lose all of her hair that she had been growing all her life. This is what happened. She was born with beautiful dark hair, which they say is a rare thing with newborns. When she was growing up, it got even darker and even more beautiful. Karen stood out in all her pictures right from when she was a small child, as her mom enjoyed giving her different complicated hairstyles every day. The truth is, Karen wasn’t particularly beautiful, so her hair was the thing that made her feel pretty and confident. Every time someone met her for the first time, their first reaction was: “Oh what beautiful hair! Can I touch it?” There are some people who have something unusual about their appearance and who get irritated by this kind of constant touching, but Karen really liked it. As she grew older, Karen started getting a lot of attention from boys. She prefers to think that this was because of her wonderful personality, but she was honest enough to admit that her hair was the reason why they found her attractive. You see, she had never really cut it and it was really, really long. This is why she had always taken good care of it, and at some point, started being too cautious about the health of her hair. For Karen, every hair that was lost was a reason for panic, even if she understood quite well that she was exaggerating the problem. She was so paranoid about it that she started having nightmares about losing her hair lock by lock. She would wake up all scared and sweaty. But don’t think that Karen’s hair was all that she cared about in her life. No one could have called her a shallow person – she did well in her studies and had a lot of hobbies, including sports. And it was because of sports that she started noticing that something was wrong. She was getting tired very quickly; she started losing a lot of weight even though she would eat a lot. Even worse, she got these bumps on her neck that alarmed her mom a lot, so much so that she took her to the ER at once. And after several tests, some of which were pretty painful, she was taken into hospital with a horrible diagnosis. Karen had acute leukemia. You know, that kind of diagnosis that straightaway makes you calculate how much time you have left. She was in a state of shock and didn’t know how she was supposed to feel. The funny thing is, if there was anything funny about this situation, it was the idea that she was going to lose her perfect hair that made her emotional. She would look at the bald heads of other kids in the department and just cry her eyes out. It’s silly, of course, but this was some kind of protective reaction towards the stress she felt. And for Karen, her hair was a symbol of her happy, healthy life that she had now lost. When she was preparing for chemotherapy she didn’t even think about the process or results; instead she could focus only on looking for ways to save her hair. She understood that this was foolish, that she was supposed to be concentrating on keeping her spirits up and fighting the disease, but she just couldn’t help it. Then suddenly help came when she least expected it. Her doctor suggested that she try a new hair loss prevention therapy that essentially meant freezing her scalp during the chemo. It was still undergoing trials, but due to her unusual hair the doctors were interested in how she would react. They said that it was the only credible hope to save her hair, or at least a big part of it. Of course, Karen agreed! So Karen started her chemo more focused and more positive – if you can call yourself positive in such a situation. What’s more important, she now had hope. The hope of saving her hair was closely connected in her mind to the hope of getting better, which is an enormous deal when we are talking about leukemia. She would sit wearing that funny freezing hat getting her therapy and pray that it would go alright. And her prayers were heard. Some time has passed and now she’s in remission, slowly returning to her normal life. And what about her hair? Well, she’s lost some of it, but it still looks good after all the treatment. More importantly, now that she’s a bit older Karen has developed a calmer attitude towards her hair, and she’s not as scared to lose it as much, as she has now knows that when she loses it nothing horrible happens. But she’s convinced that focusing on keeping her hair as a symbol of her healthy life has helped her to fight the disease. She’s glad that’s she still able to tell you this story and thankful to her hair for this. Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com

Hi everyone! Apologies for not uploading anything sooner, to be honest it's because I haven't had much cancerous stuff to talk about over the last year (which is a good thing!) but I wanted to make a video which focused on something which, although a key "feature" in a person's cancer journey during treatment, also continues to be a significant component of a patient's recovery...the hair! It's the most obvious thing that people point out to you during and after treatment; how good you look as a baldy, how soft the little squiggly bits are, how jealous they are of your super soft angel curls, the list goes on! It can be a visual way of representing where you're at in your journey....which can be irritating sometimes, especially when you're not taken seriously with the whole "the chemo can't be that bad, you still have hair", or worse "your cancer can't be that bad, you STILL have hair" comments... but on the other side of treatment, to hear "oh wow your hair is getting so long!" and "look at your hair, you look so healthy!" can be so uplifting :D My hair started growing back on 5th April 2012 after my autograft stem cell transplant 2 months earlier, and since then I haven't had a single hair cut until now, 3 years later! I felt that getting my hair cut before then would be like cutting away the progress; that every extra millimetre of growth meant another extra leap further away from being ill. It sounds silly and I was actually getting fed up of having such a long, frizzy, split ended mess of a mop, but I just kept letting it grow. It came back curly, but before I was diagnosed my hair was only very slightly wavy. I thought the curls might straighten out as the hair got older and heavier from the added growth but I was wrong! It looks like the curls may have stopped as my hair is quite straight until about half way down now, but again that might be due to it being weighed down...I guess we shall see after the cut! Either way, my hair is still SO SOFT as it is essentially brand new hair, I haven't dyed it, I don't blow dry or straighten it very often at all and I drown it in conditioner...so that's a plus! For those who are interested in how long it will take for their hair to grow back, my hair after 3 years with no hair cut was 45 cm (18 inches) long! This is about average according to the internet, which says hair grows about 15 cm a year. I'm sure other factors would affect growth speed such as climate (my hair grows faster in summer, which doesn't last long in the UK!), diet, medication, products and things like using hair dye or a lot of heat styling, but roughly 3 years of growth will result in hair which is past the shoulders :) I got it cut last week and I'm glad I did, finally my hair has a style rather than ridiculous layers from each hair being the exact same length, and the split ends are gone so it looks less messy, yay! If you're interested in donating your hair or learning more about the Little Princess Trust, check them out here: http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/ Hope everyone is doing well, keep me posted on where you're at in your cancer journey :) Lots of love!! 3 1/2 years ago I was inspired to grow my hair out to donate it to a child with cancer. Over this period of time it brought me close to the brave children who go out to battle every single day with their head held high and take on challenges way beyond any human being should have to. I hope through this video it will inspire others to go and do what they can, whether it's donating their own hair, visiting a child in the hospital or volunteer for a local organization. HEYYYYY! UPDATE FROM MIGHTY MO ON OCT 5, 2018: Today I received the results from my latest blood work. The tumor markers are down sightly, so that's good. Since my platelets were getting pounded by the chemo, we've gone to an every-other-week infusion schedule. While that will definitely give my blood and immune system time to repair, we're hopeful that it will NOT give the tumors time to grow. I guess we'll know after this series is finished and another CT is done. I sure this works, since having a week off between infusions is AWESOME! I can enjoy a whole weekend with ENERGY. WOW. ~ Mighty Mo CANCER INFO: In 2011 I was diagnosed with Granulosa Cell Tumors - a very rare form of Ovarian Cancer. In 2015, after two surgeries to remove large tumors, I was put on chemo. After two years of standard high-dose chemo, horrible nausea, and painful chemical burns on my hands and feet - I quit. My twin sister (who is in the video!) wasn't ready to lose me yet, so she went online and found a clinic that uses low dose approach (Seattle Integrative Cancer Center) along with naturopathic methods to improve the strength of the immune system. Although we can't get rid of the tumors (they re-seed themselves) we are keeping them small -- which means avoiding surgeries. That's our goal. I will be on chemo the rest of my life, but I'm alive -- and able to encourage others with this devastating disease!

Why Do Cancer Patients Lose Hair http://drthomaslodi.com/ The question of why do cancer patients lose hair is actually not a valid one. The reason being is that cancer does not cause hair loss. The only exception would be is if you were in the late stages of cancer and were in a state of severe malnutrition for a long period of time. When we see hair loss it’s always due to chemotherapy or radiation but the vast majority is due to the chemo treatments. What chemotherapy does is go after the rapidly dividing cells and it’s more toxic to those cells. Now, our skin is also rapidly dividing as we have new skin over our entire body in about 6 weeks. What is in our skin and part of our skin is what’s called appendages such as hair, hair follicles and glands. So, our hair is also rapidly dividing as it naturally grows and is the reason we need haircuts. The other rapidly dividing cells are in our gastro intestinal cells. We have new linings to our stomach, small intestines and large intestines every 3 days as new cells are rapidly dividing. Any place in the human body that has rapidly dividing cells will be affected by chemotherapy. That’s why we often see people who have started chemo treatments and within a week they have no hair left or have just patches of hair left. And, some people might feel fine even while losing their hair but what happens is once their “toxic cup” is full and more is added, every little bit will cause a problem. Again, hair loss is not caused by cancer it is caused by the conventional therapies and treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Hair Donation: Anna wanted a haircut. Her sole purpose was donating hair to someone in need. She called me because I offer this free service and donate hair to charities that makes wigs for cancer patients, and wigs for kids. Anna has natural hair that has never been colored with chemicals. Her hair is very healthy and beautiful. Anna's hair was 22 inches long. This was not a big chop because I cut her hair into a bob hair style. The big chop would be a hair cut that would leave about 2 inches of hair. Thank you Anna for caring about others. If you would like to donate your hair for a cause.
