DIY: How to revive a dead 18650 (or any) Li-ion battery cell

04:37
Today I will show you how to revive a dead 18650 Li-ion cell that's being refused by the chargers. This method will work with any Li-ion battery, not just the 18650 cells. Here's my follow-up video:https://youtu.be/vFmbG8GpS4A if you wonder how much current (Amps) goes through the wire. Note: this is not a permanent way to charge an 18650 cell. The point of this method is just to bring up the voltage of the dead cell to a point that is enough for a real 18650 charger to accept it and charge it properly. When a Li-ion battery does not have high enough voltage, the charger would not charge it. I think the reason is safety because if the voltage is too low, it might take a risk of charging a NiMH or NiCad cell which are only 1.2 volts each. And if you put a NiMH or NiCad cell (at 1.2 Volts) in a Li-ion charger that charges up to 4.2 volts, all hell will break loose. Also: don't overdischarge a Li-ion cells down to below 3V especially below the threshold recognized by the charger. Otherwise, it will not live long. The "Goldilocks" zone for a long and healthy Li-ion cell life is between 30% and 90% charge. Too much charge or discharge would be bad for the cell.

Li-Ion cell charger with (too) simple design. With schematic. Charges to 4.45V!

09:04
A very simple Li-Ion battery charger from China. It contains a very simple 2-transistor switching power supply and a voltage regulation with just a Zener diode. There's also an indication circuitry to indicate charging / fully charged using a red / green LED. This is done using only a 3-pin LED and resistors, without any active components. This power supply has no fuse and a questionable mains separation, so it may be dangerous The output voltage is very poorly regulated and in this case it was 4.45V, enough to make a Li-Ion battery catch fire or explode. DIY: How to Revive a dead Li-ion power tool battery

08:15
Fix your dead battery by using a DC power source to raise its voltage. Note: do NOT use a DC power source with more voltage than the maximum rated voltage of the dead battery. If you have a regular 18V or 20V battery pack, that's 21V max (4.2V x5). Do not use a DC power source more than 21V to revive the dead 21V battery. About the wires with alligator clips: make sure you use heavy gauge wires size AWG 14 or bigger. The alligator clips with attached wires from Harbor Freight are not going to make it as the wires are too thin and they will heat up and just melt or burn the insulation right away. And make sure to monitor closely what you're doing cause it might heat up things quickly. As soon as you get the desired voltage (about 16V or more for this kind of batteries), just remove the alligator clips and put the battery in the charger. In other words, just do the parallel charging as minimal as possible and just enough for your charger to recognize the dead battery.

How to charge A DEAD 18V Lithium Battery Pack!

05:08
I just wanted to make a quick video to show how I was able to get my 18V Ryobi cordless drill batteries to take a charge again. This is actually the second battery I did. Well the 2 batteries that came with the tool kit stopped taking a charge and just blinking red in the "smart charger" after only about a month. I was not shocked (pun intended) since they felt a bit lighter than the more expensive ones I already had from this manufacturer. I don't know if the 12V DC I used is the only method, but it worked twice in a row for me. I said 2 seconds in the video, but I don't know if it was even that long. If it didn't work the first time I would have gone back and tapped the positive for a few more seconds. In summary, both batteries that I fixed have now been fully cycled multiple times in the charger and have worked like new in all my tools. After I let the one charge fully that is shown in the video I put it in the flashlight to test it and ended up turning it off after 3hrs. Bottom line, I couldn't be happier that it worked and saved a bunch of money by not having to get new batteries. Lastly, if my batteries had been old and well used I would not have tried this due to the dangers of lithium batteries, I would have just gotten new ones. In my case, I knew they were only a month or so old and had somehow dropped below the "smart charger" built-in voltage threshold, which I think is around 3V for most lithium chargers. That is all I believe really happened, is that I simply raised the voltage just enough so that the smart charger would recognize the battery and allow it to receive a charge. The output specs on the adapter were: 12VDC, 500mA I needed a T-10 security bit to remove the screws for the battery case.

If you have a variety of cordless tools, it's impossible to have too many different kind of chargers. In this video I'll show you how to charge any cordless tool battery with a Turnigy Accucell charger (which is usually used for charging RC batteries). Save your money on the original chargers and the clutters of keeping them around. This charger will need a 12V power source. Here's how to power it with a computer Power Supply: https://youtu.be/ibWBglrGYsE

Black & Decker LDX120c Review - 20 Volt Lithium-ion Cordless Drill/driver

04:23
Black & Decker LDX120C 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill/Driver Review Black and Decker LDX120c: http://amzn.to/1Xogdx8 Dewalt DCD771C2: http://amzn.to/2236QDM Drill Bits for the LDX120c: http://amzn.to/1NsDDPW Extended Battery for LDX120c: http://amzn.to/1NsE3py Today we’re reviewing the Black and Decker LDX120C 20Volt Cordless Drill. This is probably the most popular cordless drill on the market and is built to use around the house. The first thing that struck me was how compact this drill is. Its barrel measures about 7.5” and its about 8” tall. That’s pretty compact for a drill with a 20V battery. It weighs about 2.5lbs and what I absolutely love, is how well balanced it feels. They designed the drill such that most of its mass is centered around where you grip the drill and this gives you a very balanced grip. And this is important because having an unbalanced tool will put a lot of undue stress on your hand and you’ll tire out pretty fast. The grip on this one though, is almost perfect. The base kit comes with the drill itself, one battery and an ac charger. The 20V lithium ion battery slides and locks into place. Pushing the orange button on the front pops the battery out, so you can plug into the charger. The charger flashes a green led when the battery is charging and a solid green when its fully charged. It’ll flash a rapid red, if the battery has a serious issue and a slower red if the battery is overheating. The drill has a ⅜” chuck. So if you want to drill holes larger than ⅜”, you’ll need to either use a reduced shank drill bit, step drill or a hole saw. I’ll leave links to a few that’ll work with this drill in the description below. The speed can be controlled reasonably precisely using the squeeze trigger, and the drill’s direction can be reversed using the reversing switch. The switch isn’t as heavy duty as something you’d find on a dewalt, but it should work just fine for household use. The ldx120 also has 11 settings on its torque clutch. It has 10 torque settings for driving torque and one for drilling. For household use, I’d recommend just leaving it in the drill setting, even if you’re just driving screws. It has an extremely handy led light which turns on when you gently squeeze the trigger and this is very helpful for when you’re working in poorly lit places. It comes with one driver bit which stores in the base of the drill. And in case you need other driver sizes, it’ll work with any standard set of driver bits. To test the drill, I charged the drill up to a 100% and started off by drilling holes in a pine 2x4 using a ⅜” drill bit. With this bit though, it struggled a bit to break through towards the end. So I changed the bit out to a 5/16” dewalt drill bit and this time, it was able to drill through, without any issue at all. So with thicker materials like a 2x4, I wouldn’t recommend drilling through with a drill bit larger than 5/16”. Next, I wanted to see how well it would drive 2” drywall screws and as you can see, it did this without any serious hesitation. It also unscrewed those drywall screws very easily, using the provided driver bit. And lastly, I tested it with a step drill, to see how large a hole it would cut. It went pretty smoothly till about ¾” but hit a bit of resistance after that. So I wouldn’t recommend drilling holes using hole saws or spade bits, in thicker materials, that are any larger than ¾”. Now you can obviously cut larger holes in thinner materials like plexiglass or mild steel. The battery life is pretty decent and if you’re using it around the house occasionally, you might not even need a spare battery. However, if you plan to use it for longer periods of time, black and decker sells the extended battery which will almost double your run time. I’ll leave a link to that below.

D.I.Y Milwaukee Battery won't charge How to Jump Start

01:53
In this video I show how I was able to get a Milwaukee battery that had be sitting a long time and as a result would not charge, to accept a full charge again. This was done on 3 Milwaukee 2.4 Ah 18 volt batteries and all 3 are able to complete the full charge cycle. Using a standard 9 volt household battery to transfer power to the 18 volt battery I made a connection and the 9 volt battery gave a small amount of power to the battery pack so that the charger was able to function properly. I don't know if this will work with other brands like DeWalt Ryobi Makita Black and Decker Craftsman Ridgid Bosch Hitachi Porter-Cable skil but it might be worth a try.

Size and weight of battery operated nailers is what has kept them from taking over the market in this category, leaving pneumatic nails still in the game. The Hitachi NT1850DE 18V lithium-ion brad nailer is designed to drive 18 gauge brad nails from 5/8" to 2" in length. Hitachi controls most features with a unique push button and LED light configuration. In the nailers case, a selective actuation button, allows a user to choose between bump or sequential firing modes. Additional features include a tool-less depth of drive adjustment, quick clear nose with tool-less jam release, on-tool battery indicator, LED light, integrated pivoting belt hook, side trigger lock switch, and a rubber over-molded shell to reduce accidental damage from setting the tool down. Hitachi's nailers have zero ramp up time with a very nice trigger and a smooth fire. The nailer is ready to fire again instantly and there is little to no feedback or kick from the fire. Unfortunately, there is no dryfire lockout, so you have to watch the magazine to make sure there are nails loaded, otherwise the unit will put a divot in your wood without placing a nail. All Hitachi's battery powered tools come with a limited lifetime tool warranty on non-wearable parts. The Hitachi 18V lithium-ion battery comes with a two-year warranty. Specifications Weight (w/ battery): 7.3 lbs. Magazine Capacity: 100 Nails Magazine Type: Side Loading Driving Speed: 2-3 Nails Per Second Fasteners Per Charge: Up To 1,650 Nails Fasteners: 5/8" to 2" 18 Gauge Straight Brad Nails Battery Type: 18V Lithium Ion Battery Amp Hour: 3.0Ah (compact) Number of Batteries: 1 Motor Type: Brushless Impressive Hitachi's 18 gauge brad nailer is powered by their new compact 3.0Ah compact lithium-ion battery, which is also compatible with all other Hitachi 18V Li-Ion slide-type, battery-powered tools. This small, compact battery delivers enough power for this tool to sink 1,577 nails on one battery charge. In testing, the holes left from the nailer were excellent. There was no push or additional indentations left from the feedback after the fire. The trigger and firing process are fast, quiet and incredibly smooth. The only issue we found with this nailer was that it was not capable of sinking a 2" brad nail in solid oak. For some trim carpenters and woodworkers, that could be an issue. It could however easily and consistently sink a 1-1/2" brad nail in the same material. Hitachi has made some great improvements to this nailer and created one of the top nailers for ergonomics and smooth firing. In testing, we did not have any jams or issues with any nail placements, even in tight spots. The battery platform and chargers are very solid and this would be a great platform to invest in! The Hitachi Triple Hammer Impact Driver is probably one of the best on the market!

Lithium ion batteries that seemingly won't recharge

06:34
I bought some lithium ion batteries but two of the nine were at .1 volt and won't recharge using my generic 18650 charger. I tried a different charger which is essentially a one amp lithium USB charging board that you can buy off ebay for less than $2. Using this particular board, I was able to recharge the seemingly dead lithium ion battery. You have to, of course, wire it up and use a 18650 battery holder. I brought the voltage back up to 3.88v using the one amp charging board and I reinserted the battery back into the charger that wouldn't charge it before. This time, the red light goes on, meaning it is charging. I suppose this process is what battery reconditioners do with weak batteries. They "wake" up the discharged battery and allow the battery to work again. Do not continue to charge the battery if it does not wake up as permanent battery might already been done to the battery. Do this at your own risk as mishandling of the lithium ion battery can lead to fire or explosion. Click here to subscribe to this channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=wtam69

How to revive a dead rechargeable power tool battery easily

03:24
How to revive a dead rechargeable power tool battery easily Rechargeable batteries for power tools sometimes will no longer charge but often these can be easily restored back to life with this simple method. The problem: You have a drill or other power tool with rechargeable batteries but one of the batteries is completely dead and when you plug it into the recharger unit it won't recharge at all. The manufacturers would tell you that you need to buy a new battery. When you look into it you find that the cost a new battery is so high that you may as well just buy a new drill that comes with a couple of new batteries. Well all is not lost! A friend in the UK told me about this method to revive a dead drill battery many years ago and I have used it successfully a number of times since. Basically, it seems that when a battery becomes completely discharged the charger unit effectively does not recognise that a battery has been inserted. This method puts enough charge into the battery so that it is not recognised by the charger and it gets recharged. I take the dead Dewalt battery and a good fully-charged battery and place them side by side. I then use a couple of pairs of scissors to connect the terminals together (plus to plus and negative to negative). I keep them connected for a minute or so and by then the dead battery has sufficient charge to be fully recharged by the charger unit. Of course you can use two pieces of wire or something else to connect the batteries together but I have found scissors work well when doing it by yourself with only one pair of hands. Although I have fix a Dewalt battery here I have used this method to fix other makes when the battery will not charge. So, in future, if you have a dead Nicd power tool battery try this power tool battery fix first before buying new. How to revive dead NiCd battery from cordless power tools

05:21
In this video I'll show you how to bring to life dead NiCd battery from cordless power tools. Nicd batteries often die in such a way that they won't take a charge and have zero voltage. This usually means they're shorted out by crystal dendrite growth inside Nicd cells. There's a method of bringing them back to life by zapping those shorted crystal dendrites away with too much current and voltage. Hitachi NR1890DR 3-1/2" 18V Cordless Plastic Strip Framing Nailer Review

05:58
Cordless, Gasless framing nailers are on the market today, but many of them lack power and runtime.  Hitachi claims their new version will have all the power needed to drive 3-1/2” nails into even the toughest of engineered lumber.  We can tell you from our use that it can drive those large nails without a problem!  Here is the scoop. When you place a charge 3.0 compact battery in the Hitachi cordless framing nailer, the unit feels pretty balanced, but it is still 11 pounds and quite large.  It is a framing nailer and the size is fairly comparable to other models.  We felt that the magazine was slightly shorter than the 2 other pneumatic framing nailers we have in the shop.  Our round head 3" ring shank nails came in strips of 28.  Hitachi says this unit can hold 37 nails in the magazine.  Loading the magazine is simple with a slide mechanism to go over the nails then catch them to apply pressure. Once you are ready to use the nailer, you must push the power button tucked away under the handle.  This is the place where you turn the machine on, check the battery and also select the actuation.  This area is a bit cramped for use with gloves and in some cases hard to see in bright light.  With the unit turned on, the nailer works just like a pneumatic framing nailer.  The claw tip must be depressed for the unit to fire and the recoil is very similar to a pneumatic framing nailer. Hitachi NR1890DR Features Unique Air Spring Drive System that uses compressed air to drive each nail resulting in zero ramp up time Brushless motor Powered by a Compact 3.0Ah Lithium Ion battery Drives up to 400 nails per charge ( 3.0Ah battery ) Tool-less depth of drive adjustment Power switch located on control panel must be depressed for 1 second to activate the nailer and automatically switches off after 30 minutes of inactivity Selective actuation on the control panel Battery charge indicator located on tool control panel Ergonomically formed soft grip handle Dry fire lock out system Side lock trigger switch Pivoting rafter hook 21° magazine holds approximately 37 plastic strip collated fasteners from 2" up to 3-1/2" in length Drives 3-1/2” nails into even the toughest of engineered lumber Hardened claw tip 10.8 lbs and well balanced for easy maneuverability Covered by Hitachi's Lifetime Lithium Ion tool warranty & 2-Year Lithium Ion battery warranty Battery Usage First, while building a few small deer stands, we found that the 28 nail strips were a bit frustrating as we felt we were running out of nails all the time.  The dry fire lock out was great and the feel of it allowed us to know we were out of nails over and over again.  As we counted the nails and watched the battery life the best we could, we finally started to hear the unit slow at around 270 nails.  The nailer would still fire and drive the nails deep, the compressor just sounded slower although it still kept up with our pace.  The first run, we ran out of power at 302 3" nails.  We popped in another 3.0 Ah battery and it died at 311 nails.  The next run was 298 nails.  At that point, we were out of compact batteries and we loaded a 6.0 ah battery to finish.  That larger battery added a lot of weight to the unit and made it a bit more of a load on your wrist. The Control Panel The heart and soul of the Hitachi Framing Nailer are tucked away at the base of the nailer.  There are small buttons and LED lights that let you know how the unit is set to fire and the battery life.  These buttons are smaller and working with them in the cold with gloves is not ideal.  The LED lights are small but fairly visible.  In direct sunlight, they can be hard to decipher.  The battery fuel gauge is only two lights and we want more info from that gauge, but one can tell from the sound of the nailer when you are low on battery. Sealed Unit Hitachi uses a brushless motor and air pump to build a charge of air in order to fire a nail.  There is a shut off limit if the unit is below 23 degrees Fahrenheit or if the unit gets too hot.  Hitachi has inserted sensors in an effort to protect this framing nailer.   Similar to many air ride systems on cars, the compressed air used is a sealed system.  There is no chance of dust or dirt getting into the air chamber.  There is, however, exhaust ports that allow the air to rush out from underneath the piston as it fires.  Without those ports, there would be a vacuum effect and the gun would work against itself.

How To: Cordless Tool Battery Maintenance - 18 Volt NiCad

11:18
I have a 18volt Black and Decker cordless power tool set, it consists of a reciprocating saw, skillsaw, drill, flashlight, quick charger. The batteries on mine are 4 to 5 years old - they are near end of life but there are still things you can try to resurrect them. Exercising them for example is good to an extent and it can be tried to get a bit more run time out of your older batteries. Tip #1 is to get a quick charger, its a smart charger and really helps to correctly charge and not over charge your battery. I unbox and review it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKT2EBXCnCY Tip #2 Exercise it by using your flashlight to drain the battery - good for nicads that may get battery memory after years of not fully draining them Tip #3 measure the voltage on them, if they register below 18 volts hot off the charger - you know you have bad cells and there won't be much that can be done to those batteries, time to go purchase new ones! I love my combo set and for the price of new batteries which will make this set run like its brand new, its still $100 cheaper than getting a new lithium Ion set which causes minimum $200 just for the drill / driver combo. The XCV05Z is powered by two 18V Lithium-Ion batteries, giving users the extended run-time of 36V but without leaving the 18V battery platform. The cordless backpack design and efficient HEPA filtration system makes it ideal for cleaning crews, as well as for contractors when used as part of a dust extraction system (tool connecting adapters sold separately). Powerful and Portable  “For cleaning crews on airlines and in schools, hotels, offices, or any other jan-san application, this is a powerful and portable solution that eliminates long and hazardous extension cords that trail a corded backpack vacuum,” said Carlos Quintana, Senior Product Manager, Cordless Products, Makita USA. “It’s also a great dust extraction tool for contractors, bridging the gap between low-capacity on-board dust extraction systems and larger-capacity but less portable wheeled-canister job site vacuums. For applications like overhead concrete drilling from a scissor lift, the XCV05Z is a portable vacuum system with no extension cord, fewer obstructions and greater ease-of-use”. Makita 18V X2 tools allow contractors to use two 18V batteries to take on the most demanding applications, delivering the watt-hours and amp-hours of a 36V battery – but without having to manage multiple battery platforms or investing in larger, heavier higher-voltage batteries. The 18V LXT® batteries used in the XCV05Z are the same 18V batteries a contractor can use on their Makita drill, impact driver, and over 125 other Makita cordless tools. World’s Largest Cordless Tool Line-Up The XCV05Z is part of Makita’s expanding 18V Lithium-Ion series. With over 125 tools it is the world’s largest cordless tool line-up powered by 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. As part of the expanding 18V LXT® Series, Makita offers eleven 18V X2 LXT® (36V) tools powered by two 18V batteries including the new XCV05Z as well as a 2.1 gallon vacuum, recipro saw, dual slide compound miter saw, rotary hammer, circular saw, hedge trimmer, string trimmer, chain saw and two blowers. Efficient BL™ Brushless Motor The XCV05Z delivers up to 90 minutes of continuous operation on low setting and 60 minutes on the high setting when using two 18V LXT® 5.0Ah batteries (BL1850B, sold separately). The efficient BL™ Brushless Motor generates 53 CFM of suction power and 28.5” of static water lift. The HEPA filter combined with the filter bag captures large, small and micro-dust particulates, and the half-gallon dust collection container is easily removed for dust disposal. Performance and Ease-of-Use The XCV05Z has a flexible 39” hose, with a telescoping extension wand that provides 20” to 34” of additional reach. The push button power selection controller has high and low settings and attaches to the waist belt of the harness, with an L.E.D. light for improved visibility. The vacuum has a compact design and weighs only 9.4 lbs. (with empty dust bag and two 18V 5.0Ah batteries, batteries sold separately). The padded shoulder straps and waist belt have multiple adjustments for a comfortable fit. Star Protection Computer Controls™ For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita 18V LXT® tools features Star Protection Computer Controls™. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the XCV05Z can be powered by Makita 18V LXT® and Compact Lithium-Ion batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside, including 18V Lithium-Ion 2.0Ah, 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, and 5.0Ah batteries, as well as the upcoming 18V 6.0Ah battery (available August 2016).
