What does make a big difference is lowering sugar in your diet and more specifically, “high fructose corn syrup” In a recent study in the journal Open Heart (2), the authors write: “Evidence from epidemiological studies and experimental trials in animals and humans suggests that added sugars, particularly fructose, may increase blood pressure and blood pressure variability, increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand, and contribute to inflammation, insulin resistance and broader metabolic dysfunction. Thus, while there is no argument that recommendations to reduce consumption of processed foods are highly appropriate and advisable, the arguments in this review are that the benefits of such recommendations have less to do with sodium—minimally related to blood pressure and perhaps even inversely related to cardiovascular risk—and more to do with highly-refined carbohydrates and sugars." The Problem Started In The 1970s Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was far cheaper to use in their products. In fact, HFCS is the #1 source of calories in America!!!( 3) It’s found in almost everything you can think of. More specifically, in sodas and fruit juices. But also in many pre-packaged foods. This also includes “healthy sugars” sweetened with agave. My Proven “Prescription” and Recommendation For You You must do your best to limit and eliminate all HFCS and to do this, make sure you read labels. Again, the LESS pre-packaged the food, the better. Limit your TOTAL fructose to 25 grams or less, that’s about 100 calories daily. This includes the natural fructose found in fruits. If you are already suffering from high blood pressure or signs of insulin resistance like diabetes, overweight and high cholesterol, you should be particularly careful to limit your fructose, including that from whole fruits, to 15 grams per day or less. That’s about 60 calories daily. So there you have it. Focus more on limiting your sugars, this includes fruit sugar, fructose … and especially “high fructose corn syrup” which is found in most pre-packaged foods, especially sodas and fruit juices. How do we manage good health if you have any disease? It is important that we understand the do’s and don’ts of any disease for that. So let us take the three most common diseases that we commonly come across, one is diabetes, second is hypertension, third is asthma. We need to understand that top avoid things that worsen the condition we need to avoid certain things. Asthma is usually triggered by some allergy factor. So it can be related to food or it can be related to anything in the nature from dust or pollen grains or sometimes season. So whenever somebody has asthma, he needs to avoid these foods that can cause asthmatic worsening in the previous few months, whenever he has had an abnormal worsening. Second he needs to ensure that he is adequately dressed, closed and doesn’t expose himself to cold and also ensure that he takes his medicines along with him, so that he can immediately use the inhalers whenever required. So these are the thing that any person with asthma must do and you should also be aware of taking healthy foods which are rich in chemicals and vitamins so that his immunity is good and he can also get himself immunized for influenza and pneumococcal vaccine, yearly for influenza and once in 5 years for pneumococcal vaccine, to prevent the risk of admission to the hospital because of a viral infection that can occur at anytime during this season. These people can also have steroids, so somebody with diabetes and asthma can have sudden worsening of his glucose levels due to the steroid injection or due to the steroid tables that are given for reducing the intensity of the asthma. During that period it is important that the respiratory physician and the main physician or the endocrinologist work together and for a short period of time, the person may require insulin and then the insulin can be stopped or the medicines have to be increased in dose and they can be reduced after the removal of steroids. So we need to be aware of this problem and those with asthma, sometimes take native medicines that can contain steroids and if they take them continuously for a longer period of time, it can affect the bone health, it can affect that muscle strength and it can worsen the glucose levels. So it is important that we understand the medicines that we are taking and what are the side effects of those medicines because those can worsen the diabetes and hypertension if they exist together. So those with hypertension they can understand that they have to take less salt an do regular walking, latest half an hour every day, and spend sometimes in the nature especially in the morning hours if the season is fine or in the early hours if they are not comfortable in the morning. Those with diabetes have to understand that two most important problems of diabetes is just that the sugar is going up or the sugar is going down. So the best way to find out that is to check your sugars. So you always look at your sugars and look at what you have eaten before. Certain foods increase the sugars, especially rice, potato, fruit juices, anything that is sweet, japery, also honey. So that is very very rich ripe fruit and also cause the sugars to go up. So we need to avoid those foods and consume foods rich in vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates so that the sugar levels don’t go up understand that we need to take the medicine and eat at the right time, otherwise the sugars will go low and cause hypoglycemia. So these things we need to remember and all 3 yearly visits or once in three months visits depending on the symptoms and severity so that you go and check your lipid profile and kidney function and eye function, heart function and whether you have any weakness in the limbs and whether your chest and lung expansion is good and you functioning is good. So yearly a comprehensive checkup of the heart, lungs, blood pressure and blood glucose levels and HbA1c and liver function and kidney function will be in an excellent way in order to assess the condition where you are and to take remedial measures immediately. So those people with diabetes and hypertension have to follow a good healthy diet with all people who should try and strive to be healthy with exercise regimen and daily physical activity that keeps them fit and avoid those things that can avoid asthma, diabetes or hypertension in consultation with a good physician who can take care of their overall health.
