Colorectal cancer is a common form of cancer, which can be caused due to inflammation in the body. According to researchers, a diet high in foods with the potential to cause inflammation, including meats, refined grains and high-calorie beverages, was associated with increased risk of developing colorectal cancer for men and women. The findings indicated that the risk appeared to be higher among overweight or obese men and lean women. What people eat can influence inflammation in the body as measured by inflammatory biomarkers, so diet may be a modifiable risk factor to prevent colorectal cancer. The team analysed 1,21,050 male and female health care professionals, who were followed for 26 years in long-term studies. The researchers completed the food questionnaires about what they ate, on the basis of which data analysis was done last year. The scores were based on 18 food groups characterised for their inflammatory potential and were then calculated from the questionnaires given to participants every four years. According to Valerie Butram, an oncology dietitian with the Regional Cancer Center, during cancer treatment it’s common for patients to have trouble eating. “It really does affect your appetite. It can affect your taste alteration. They may have some mouth inflammation, they may have some GI upset, and they may have some elimination problems.” Butram says maintaining the patient’s weight is important during cancer treatment. Protein needs to be a big part of their diet, as it helps with growth replacement during cancer treatment. Some choices to keep on hand are fish, chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, even hummus and peanut butter. “It’s so important for them to have that nutrition to keep them strong to decrease any chance for an infection and to keep their weight stable” said Butrum. She suggested smaller, more frequent meals that are easily absorbed in the stomach like pudding, ice cream, or smoothies. Also, keeping high calorie snacks on hand and scheduling meals can help the cancer patient stay nourished. “If we can nourish and hydrate them through treatment they are going to come around and recover a lot faster” said Butrum. This may be secondary to nausea and vomiting, mouth ulcers that prevent eating or swallowing, depression, changes in taste and/or dry mouth. It is vital that a patient receiving chemotherapy remain hydrated and eat nutrient-dense foods during treatment. Scroll down to Step 1 below to help the patient stay as healthy as possible while receiving chemotherapy. 1 Find high-calorie foods that appeal to the patient. Cravings are often the body’s subliminal attempt to signal a person to eat substances and nutrients in which they are deficient. What does he or she particularly enjoy? Keep the foods they crave around the house and easily accessible. Some examples of calorie and protein dense foods are milk shakes, cheese, smoothies, pudding, chicken, eggs, lean red meat, fish, yogurt, ice cream, peanut butter, almond butter, whole grain toast, lentils, spinach and garlic. 2 Keep snacks around to munch on throughout the day. Examples of high-calorie and protein snacks include: Half a cup of nuts and a fruit 2 graham crackers or a slice of whole grain bread with natural peanut or almond butter A mix of carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumber or celery sticks with canola or olive oil based dressing Popcorn trail mix consisting of 1 cup of popcorn made with canola oil and missed with quarter cup of nuts and 2 tablespoons of raisins Low-fat yogurt with 2-3 tablespoons chopped nuts 1 cup of whole grain cereal with skim milk Fruit smoothie consisting of 6 ounces of low fat vanilla yogurt, half a cup of skim milk, a cup of berries 3 Drink plenty of fluids that are not caffeinated or alcohol based. A major symptom of chemotherapy is having a dry mouth (xerostomia). Aside from it being important to hydrate, constantly drinking healthy fluids combats this symptom, too. Water, flavored water, coconut water, smoothies, liquid nutrition supplements, ice cream, sorbet, sherbet, pudding, fruit based popsicles, crushed ice, herbal teas, decaffeinated coffee and teas are all good examples of non-caffeinated beverages. Today I’d like to talk with you about managing a healthy weight during and after cancer treatment, specifically addressing unwanted weight loss. Weight loss is a common side effect during cancer treatment. It can come from a number of factors that may all be occurring at the same time. It’s common to experience a loss of appetite, taste changes, or other symptoms that may make it difficult or less desirable to eat—things like nausea, fatigue, and bowel changes. At the same time, your metabolism tends to be less efficient or a bit revved up during cancer treatment, so we can see how easy it is to experience unwanted weight loss when we want less but need more. But don’t worry—we’re here today to talk with you about some simple, easy tips and tricks to help prevent some of that weight loss. One of the most important things is to eat and drink often in small amounts throughout the day, to set yourself up for success by being prepared. Asking someone to help with the food shopping and preparation can help you save your energy for eating. Having somebody help with cooking is also beneficial, because often the smell of food can be a bit of a turn-off for the appetite when it’s cooking. They could even pack you a cooler you can keep with you at your bedside or if you're sitting in resting or to take with you on the go full of quick and easy meals and healthy snacks and fluids. In addition to needing more calories during treatment, we also need more nutrients and also more protein. Protein is really important for the immune system, for energy, for blood cells throughout your entire body, and of course for maintaining muscle mass. So, a few things that can be really helpful are to make smoothies and soups. When it comes to smoothies, they’re a great way to pack in extra vitamins, minerals, fluids, protein, and calories. You can even get addicted to it and suffer withdrawal symptoms because sugar causes a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain. Not to mention that it is extremely bad for you teeth. So what can you when you get the sweet tooth? Raw honey is a great substitute that won’t spike your insulin and actually has a ton of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. 2. Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. One study found that eating just two slices of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25335643/). In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. All sodas and sugary drinks, diet or not What goes for sugar goes for sugary drinks as well. If sugar is just empty calories, then sugary drinks are liquid calories. The problem with these is that we don’t really detect them. You can drink a whole meal’s worth of calories and still be hungry. A single bottle of Coca-Cola “only” has 184 calories, but even if you just have one or two a day, they add up quickly. The best solution is to simply cut them out completely and drink water. 4. Alcohol Alcohol has more calories per gram than carbs or protein - 7. That means it is easy to go over your week’s calories on a Friday night out. But it’s not just the calories. Alcohol is a poison to the body. When you drink it, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat - stopping your fat burning for several hours. For example, a regular beer has 150 calories. A few of those, and some fast food at the end of the night can quickly come out to over 1000 in calories. If you want to drink, do it in moderation. 5. Salt Unlike most of this list, salt is the one thing you shouldn’t give up on. The two minerals found in it - sodium and chloride - are both necessary for optimal function of the body. Going too low leads to higher LDL levels, increased insulin resistance, increased risk of death from heart disease, heart failure and type II diabetes. However, too much salt has been linked to stomach cancer. In fact, people with high salt intake have a 68% higher risk of stomach cancer. The INDI AGM saw the launch of ‘Good Nutrition for Cancer Recovery’, a high-protein high-calorie cookbook developed specifically for cancer patients with involuntary weight loss. The book, which was funded by a Health Research Board (HRB) Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme (KEDS) awarded to Dr Aoife Ryan in UCC, allowed for the development and printing of 19,000 copies which will be available to cancer patients throughout Ireland free of charge. International data has shown that cancer patients who lose more than 10% of their pre-illness weight have death rates that are significantly higher than weight-stable cancer patients. Recent research from UCC also has highlighted the increased toxicity to chemotherapy cancer patients experience if they are malnourished (Cushen et al, Am J Clin Oncol, 2014 in press).

New Delhi, Jan 21 (ANI): Beware! Heavy diet like meats, refined grains and high-calorie beverages may cause cancer in both men and women. Colorectal cancer is a common form of cancer, which can be caused due to inflammation in the body. According to researchers, a diet high in foods with the potential to cause inflammation, including meats, refined grains and high-calorie beverages, was associated with increased risk of developing colorectal cancer for men and women. The findings indicated that the risk appeared to be higher among overweight or obese men and lean women. What people eat can influence inflammation in the body as measured by inflammatory biomarkers, so diet may be a modifiable risk factor to prevent colorectal cancer. The team analysed 1,21,050 male and female health care professionals, who were followed for 26 years in long-term studies. The researchers completed the food questionnaires about what they ate, on the basis of which data analysis was done last year.
