The brain and ovarian hormones | Marwa Azab | TEDxMontrealWomen
Brain chemicals covertly direct female hormones, but their effects on behaviors, emotions, cognitive abilities and relationships can make us vulnerable. The more we become aware and understand these vulnerabilities, the more we can transform them to actually empower us… Marwa Azab has been interested in human behavior and why we do what we do since she was a child. Her interest compelled her to complete two advanced degrees in Psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience. She has been teaching in the Psychology, Biology and Human Development departments, presenting to various audiences ranging from first graders to seniors and is a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post. Her approach to understanding any human behavior—or misbehavior—is unique because it is Gestalt. This interdisciplinary background allows her to intersect fields and come up with innovative ways to understand “why we do what we do”. She is a firm believer that it is at these intersection foci that creativity and novelty find fertile grounds. She practices this holistic approach in individual and group life-coaching. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Female Hormone Imbalance - Hormonal Causes, Symptoms & Natural Treatment for Women
http://getleantoday.com - Dr. Raj Banerjee shares details about the causes of female hormone imbalance. The major reason why these cosmic cycles become disrupted is due to stress. The daily living pattern is disrupted, that influences the monthly rhythm. There are three major types of stress: emotional stress, dietary stress and the stress of pain and hidden inflammation, which are the 3 major triggers. Now when cortisol levels go up. it is important to realize that cortisol is responsible of three things: blood sugar control, fat burning metabolism, and also an anti-inflammatory hormone, which helps to control pain and inflammation. And it’s a mood stabilizer. It helps us keep happy and have a stable mood. So anything that is going to affect your cortisol is going to get you to store fat, put on weight, its going to cause you to get depressed and have a low mood. And its going to cause you to have difficulties in controlling pain and inflammation. And can lead to chronic pain and inflammation. And when the adrenal glands are burned out, or used up, or exhausted we become very fatigued. That could lead to chronic fatigue symptoms. So anyone that has any level of chronic fatigue or excessive fatigue by definition has adrenal exhaustion going on. Anyone that has any level of chronic pain or inflammation in their body is going through a lot of stress in their cortisol. And anyone that is overweight is going to have a problem with there cortisol levels. So stabilizing cortisol and DHEA levels helps people burn body fat, reduces pain and inflammation and improves mood and energy levels. Dr Raj wants you to know ovarian hormones and female hormones do not spontaneously malfunction by themselves. They are responding to stress as a stress hormone called cortisol. Every molecule of cortisol that you produce comes from progesterone. When you under stress guess what happens? Your cortisol goes up and your progesterone drops. Dr Raj can test your cortisol and fix it. He can test your female hormones and fix your whole hormonal system at the same time and eliminate all your symptoms. This will help eliminate depression and fatigue, night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings and it will improve your metabolism so you will able to start losing weight effectively. Dealing with Menopause, Naturally
It may be a natural part of life, but many women find menopause to be an unwelcome life-change; with symptoms that make them feel un-natural. “It starts from the head, with foggy thinking, mood changes, inability to sleep, arthritis, lack of libido. They notice that their skin gets thin, they feel like they age more rapidly, the wrinkles come on quicker,” says Dr. Heather Auld. It’s no wonder many are exploring alternatives, including hormone replacement. Women who come to Dr. Heather Auld, an integrative specialist with Lee Memorial Health System, are looking for a wholesome approach. “Bioidentical hormones are what your body naturally produces,” says Dr. Auld. Interest in bioidentical hormones is high. Derived from plant sources, they are individually matched to each patient, based on their personal makeup and needs. There are limitations on its natural state. “Bioidentical hormones still have to be synthesized in the laboratory. But what makes them bioidentical is that they are the same compound that your body produced when your ovaries were producing hormones,” says Dr. Auld. Non-hormonal approaches are another option. A more holistic way to manage symptoms, it relies on diet tweaks and healthy changes. Using methods that have been practiced around the world- for hundreds of years. “There are many herbal substances that don't have any hormones in it, that actually achieve the same results in many women. And so that and lifestyle changes relieve some of those symptoms. And that would be a hallmark starting day one,” says Dr. Auld. The end game is that women don’t need to suffer through the change of life. And if they choose, they can deal with menopause, naturally. How Do You Know When Menopause is Here and Natural Remedies
This is a great question!! The first sign is that you have abnormal menstrual cycles; and the most obvious sign is when you don't have your menstrual cycle at all. There is a difference between perimenopause and actual menopause. Perimenopause the process in which your body is starting to decline in estrogen and progesterone production. But menopause is complete - your body is not producing estrogen and progesterone. There are a lot of symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, including hot flashes, fatigue, foggy brain, and moodiness similar to when you are having premenstrual syndrome (but just a little bit different). So what are some natural remedies for perimenopause symptoms such as hot flashes. There are a couple ways to answer that. First, if you are going to do herbal remedies, you want to focus on phytoestrogen or plant based estrogen, such as black cohosh or soybean-type. I recommend using your food as medicine first. So look for things that have phytoestrogens naturally. My favorite - edamame. You can go to any Japanese restaurant, farmer's market or grocery store and buy it frozen. All you need to do is steam it, add a little sea salt and you can eat them right out of the pods. Now if you want a supplement, black cohosh, red clover and evening primrose are some great natural supplements that you can use to combat hot flashes. I personally prefer evening primrose oil or you can do red clover tea. You want to be careful about supplementing too many estrogens because they can actually have a negative effect. If you happen to have a history of breast cancer, or a family history of breast cancer, I'd highly recommend against too much phytoestrogen. The other thing you might want to take a look at is going to your local integrative medicine, or holistic doctor, and getting a full panel of your hormones done - because it's not just estrogen and progesterone that contribute to hot flashes, but also testosterone. So go and get a full panel of blood tests including your thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and have them check on your adrenal glands. That way, they can look at a 3D view of you and not just assume that it's your estrogen and progesterone that's low and causing your hot flashes. Namaste! The body relies on key nutrients and pathways to maintain hormone balance. Oxidative stress and impaired methylation are significant pathways that can help regulate hormones. A comprehensive nutrition assessment and targeted therapeutic interventions can help support these and other essential pathways. In this presentation, Dr. Owen will review nutritional testing and clinical recommendations based on the science behind these tests. The information will help support clinicians in their ability to easily incorporate these recommendations into practice, thereby providing better clinical results when balancing hormones as well as help to promote safer use of hormone therapies. In this webinar you will learn: – The latest scientific aspects of how nutritional status plays a role in hormone balance – Effective use of nutritional testing to identify key nutritional imbalances relating to hormone function – How to integrate the use of nutritional testing to provide better clinical outcomes for hormone balancing and hormone replacement ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Presented by Marion Owen, MD Marion Owen is a resident of Decatur, where she lives with her husband and two children. Alternative Medicine, Holistic Medicine, Bio-Identical Hormones - Dr. Jerome Block MD
http://www.docblock.com, There is little question that hormonal replacement benefits definitely outweigh the risks of other diseases, particularly when bio-identical hormones are used. These are exactly like the hormones made in the ovaries. The human body knows no difference from these and what is produced genetically. The bio-identicals are derived initially from plant sources and crafted to be the same composition that is naturally produced by your body. Thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones are available also bio-identically. Unfortunately, too many women in our country are not taking hormones because of the false concern that they may cause cancer. Medical doctors were hoodwinked by the media in 2006 to believe that taking hormones is risky. Three reports that show a minimal increase of breast and uterine cancer contradict the previous forty years of benignity in over 1,000 studies. Today, a woman who is age fifty and in good health could very well spend half her lifetime in a postmenopausal hormone imbalance and hence, the subject to increase of morbid problems. Female hormones are the only hormone abnormality in all of medicine that are not routinely replaced. If the patient has a low thyroid level, doctors prescribe thyroid. If she has low parathyroid output, doctors give her parathormone (Forteo). No physician would dare withhold insulin from a diabetic, but most physicians are not giving female hormones to those who need it most. Recent statistics show that less than 20 percent of postmenopausal women receive hormonal replacement and that most of them begged their physicians to prescribe them. Dr. Jerome Block, MD, PhD, FACP has an Integrative and Internal Medicine Practice in Tulsa, OK that breaks the medical mold. Medical doctors have really been letting patients down and Dr. Block has found a way to integrate all the best from traditional medicine and all the best from alternative medicine to treat people as a whole to restore their bodies to health. Menopause Hot Flashes: Is It Hot In Here Or Is It Just Me?
Hi, I'm Val with www.MenopauseReliefToday.com and today I'd like to Ask You a Question- Is It Hot In Here, Or Is It Just Me? You're sitting across from your friend having a casual conversation and suddenly, without warning, a rush of heat covers your chest, throat, and face, accompanied by heart palpitations, skin redness and beads of sweat dripping down your chest. You quickly take off your jacket, only to put it back on a few minutes later, just as suddenly feeling chilled. This episode is repeated anytime and anywhere, whether you are calm, anxious, excited or depressed. So What is happening? Welcome to menopause hot flashes, the most common symptom of menopause, affecting some 80 percent of all women. Hot flashes are the single most common symptom among women in menopause and perimenopause. In fact, three out of every four menopausal women report experiencing hot flashes. Hot flashes can happen at any time, with effects that range from uncomfortable to seriously debilitating. Some prescription antidepressants can offer relief from hot flashes, but are often associated with unpleasant side effects like nausea, dizziness, weight gain, or sexual dysfunction. Even with short-term use, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been known to cause dangerous side effects such as blood clots and gallbladder inflammation. Fortunately, these challenges need not prevent you from finding safe and effective relief from hot flashes. What works best for the majority of women is a holistic approach that combines a high quality menopause supplement, like my favorite ProFema, to address your symptoms and give you safe, effective menopause relief. Together with regular exercise, studies show that even a gentle daily walk for 20 minutes will go a long way towards preserving your muscle tone and bone density while helping smooth your menopause transition. And finally, diet modifications. You can stay younger looking, have better health and vitality if you eat real whole foods. Your hormones cannot do their job if you're putting junk in your trunk! It's important to understand that the quality of life ahead of us depends on how well we take care of our health today. During Menopause, we go through more dramatic physical transitions than at any other time in our lives since adolescence. The truth is, no one need be a helpless victim to this phase of life. With guidance and the right plan, every woman can turn menopause into an empowering experience where you can thrive physically, emotionally and spiritually as you blossom into your wisdom years!
