I use to have to wait until May after last frost to grow outside and plants died by early October. After making this greenhouse I was able to start seedlings in the greenhouse in March and the extra warmth & protection the greenhouse provides made the plants grow stronger, healthier and more bountiful for transplant earlier, and I was able to start another cycle of cool weather crops in September and harvest in late November! We live in Downeast Maine: That's along the seacoast, way up near the Canadian border. Strong "Nor'easters" and heavy snowfall during the winter (most of the year) necessitate a heavy-duty design for any sort of greenhouse. Standard designs work to various degrees, but seem to ultimately fail when we get our most powerful storms. I searched for stronger greenhouse design ideas on the internet and discovered a Youtube contributor; "LDSPrepper." He had been influenced by someone else and shared a heavy duty greenhouse design he modified to fit his needs. I simply did the same. My design uses many of the concepts from LDSPrepper's design, but modified to match our unique weather conditions. Our greenhouse is 10' x 20' and has doors at each end. There is a walkway straight down the middle with beds on each side. The roof ribs are 3/4" PVC electrical conduit, spaced 12" apart on center. The garden beds are not typical beds, but are actually "Hugelkulturs" (You can "Google" this to see what they are all about). We discovered the combination of greenhouse and hugelkultur here in Downeast Maine where there is a very short growing season, made our vegetables grow like they were on steroids! We've had this greenhouse up now for the past couple of growing seasons and it has exceeded our expectations; in standing up to weather, and in it's performance of growing veggies & extending our growing season. The drawing I used as a guide while building our greenhouse is now available as a free download in pdf format on my web site. You can also visit my wife's blog to see more pictures of this greenhouse, and of some veggies she's grown in it. My website is http://www.downeastthunder.com and you will find a number of free downloadable plans/drawings in pdf format for a variety of DIY projects, including FREE PLANS for the framework of this greenhouse! Just go to "Projects" and then "Farm & Homestead" or "Building Projects" and you'll find the link to the drawing. My wife's blog is http://www.downeastthunderfarm.com where you can find more pictures of this greenhouse, and many more photos of our farm/homestead. She also provides free downloadable patterns with instruction for felt birds/animals for crafters - very popular. LATEST UPDATE!!!!! Just posted (10/13/2017) - another video about this greenhouse. These cattle panel greenhouses or hoop houses are very versatile and extremely easy to build for less than $150 or so depending on what you cover it will. We use shade cloth in the summer to protect young cuttings we've propagated and in the fall we switch to plastic sheeting to provide some protection over winter and for spring seeding. Learn how to extend your growing season by building an easy, inexpensive, and effective hoophouse. We use four of these on our farm and move each one to two locations during the growing season. In the early spring we grow lettuce, broccoli, greens and potatoes in them and in the summer we grow tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers in them. These are a huge benefit to our farm in our cool climate! For a materials list and written instructions visit our blog: http://simplegiftsfarm.net/how-to-build-a-hoophouse/

Sign up for Marjory's FREE Weekly Newsletter at: http://try.thegrownetwork.com/free-membership/ My DIY Hoop House Plan This is Marjory Wildcraft. On this edition of Homesteading Basics, I’m going to talk about the lessons I’ve learned from several years of operating a hoop house. The Easy Greenhouse Alternative This is a hoop house that’s about 12-feet wide by 48-feet long. If you need a big greenhouse quickly and economically, a hoop house is definitely the way to go. In fact, for me, it was super easy. I actually built this thing with one finger. Yeah, I said to my husband, “Hon, I want a hoop house right there.” He built it. He’s really handy, and he loves it. Actually, I did help some. Anyway, it really is pretty quick to put up, and it’s very cost effective. Growing With A Hoop House In The Summer There are a couple of things we’ve learned about it. We’re growing here in Central Texas, and we get extremes of heat and cold. In the summer, we get a lot of intense sun here. What we found works really well is using a 70 percent shade mesh in the summer months. It provides a good amount of shade, yet allows a breeze to go through. We are able to grow things really well inside the mesh-only greenhouse. In the winter, just taking the mesh off and having plastic on is the best way to go. The plastic definitely keeps the greenhouse nice and warm. We are able to grow fabulous plants all winter long. The main thing about this is it creates a pretty big maintenance issue twice a year. In the spring, we’re taking the plastic off and putting the mesh on. Then, in the fall, we’re taking the mesh off and putting the plastic on. We did operate it for a while with both the plastic and mesh on in winter, and we found that it just doesn’t work that well. That maintenance chore twice a year is going to take about four people for a greenhouse this size. That means we get the whole family involved with that chore. But you can use a greenhouse for all seasons if you’re willing to do that kind of work. Plans For A Summer vs. Winter Hoop House My other concern is that the mesh seems to be holding up really well, but I’m not sure what the lifetime of the plastic is going to be. I think taking it off and putting it back on adds extra wear and tear to it, and it may not last as long as it would if we just kept it in place throughout the whole year. I’ve spoken with different operators of commercial greenhouses, and it seems the plastic lasts anywhere from one to three years according to the different farmers you talk to. Personally, I feel that that’s a lot of waste. But it does seem to be effective, and that’s the way it is. This is Marjory Wildcraft on operating a hoop house. Again, if you need a big greenhouse really quickly and fairly inexpensively, this is a good way to go. We’re going to be doing a lot more about greenhouses and growing in greenhouses on future episodes of Homesteading Basics. Subscribe. Stay tuned. I’ll see you on another one.

#1 Our homestead came with pipes in the ground for a 16' x 50' greenhouse. It also had water lines run from the farm well (which also needed to be restored) and a 60 amp electric service. In this video we're installing the 1.25" EMT conduit that will serve as the frame. In future videos we'll frame the end walls, run electric, and get the plastic cover on in time for winter. 10' pipes, no cutting. The two outer angles are 117.3. The ridge angle is 125.4. Sides are 6' tall. Just over 10' to the ridge. 16' wide. +AMDG #greenhouse #emtconduitgreenhouse #doityourself #homesteading #farming

HOW TO MAKE A GREENHOUSE! Homesteading greenhouse / green house ( DIY ) do it yourself plans, cheap, plastic greenhouse with mostly left over materials for gardening and economy. You can do it yourself! This is how to build a homemade greenhouse for your homestead or just your back yard. I'm Hoping to grow all organic food and become self sufficient eventually. It only took me about a day to construct once I gathered all materials. I hope you can apply these ideas and your own to build a nice, cheap, plastic greenhouse! Here is the link for my follow up video to show updates to this greenhouse! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmJMe85_pfM Like my content? Subscribe for more awesome ! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYCmal9NJFAJqPzJXkPkcpQ?sub_confirmation=1 To do this greenhouse even cheaper, you could skip the wood on the ends, and just cover it in plastic or use pallets that you can many times get for free. You could also forgo the metal frames, and use 1" PVC that would make it lighter and more mobile if you wish to make a portable greenhouse. I hope to grow majority of my own food int his greenhouse. It is healthier and cheaper. The food will have no pesticides or preservatives; organic. I can also eat it fresh, meaning the day its picked vs weeks or months old (supermarket). Fresh food has more life energy. This is just another piece in the puzzle on the road to self sufficiency. Make a video of the greenhouse you build! Thanks for watching and please comment! http://backyardgreenhouseplans.com Use backyard greenhouse plans to build your own greenhouse. You can grow anything that you want under any outside weather conditions in the comfort of your own greenhouse. There are numerous reasons why you should have a greenhouse for yourself. The very first reason is to grow plants to use in the winter. The top motive is to be able to have living plants over the cold part of the year. As an example, small vegetables can be grown much more easily than larger-sized ones. Utilizing a greenhouse, you'll be able to give starter plants a better likelihood of becoming full-grown as they grow in a more controlled temperature. Being able to use a greenhouse for your own trials makes it an attractive possibility. It may be a wonderful hobby dealing with different plants, and developing new varieties. If you decide to build your own greenhouse, you need to consider various factors in choosing a spot. You should locate it where it is going to receive a lot of sunlight. The whole day sunlight would be best, but for plants, ideally they need morning sun. There are a pair of reasons why you should face the long side of your garden greenhouse to the south.|The lengthier side of your greenhouse will need to face the south for two purposes.|You will find 2 reasons why you need to construct your greenhouse with the much longer side facing to the south.First would be to have the angle of the roof designed to catch the rays of the sun in the greatest amount. An additional reason is the fact that when you use a shade cloth you will be only required to shade a single side and not both. You can utilize maple trees, in addition to oak for keeping the daytime sun away from your greenhouse. It is important to keep in mind, however, that these trees should never shade the greenhouse in the morning as the plants require morning sunlight. It is essential that you have a reliable water supply with regard to your greenhouse. You can do this by having a water process that is entirely separate or just by using a hose that reaches the whole length of the greenhouse. Then of course you'll need some means of drainage to use along with the water source. One easy way to accomplish this is to put together the greenhouse on a higher elevation so that all water and liquid precipitation will easily drain away. You have several alternatives when it comes to choosing the appearance and structure of your greenhouse. One uncomplicated option is to construct a lean-to greenhouse on the side wall structure of your house or garage. This is cost-effective, because one wall is presently built, but that wall needs to be facing in the right direction for the proper sunlight. Another one that is also low-cost would be the hoop greenhouse. With their dome design, they usually are heated up without difficulty. Yet another option is the Gothic Arch greenhouse which is similar to a hoop greenhouse but has straighter sides and a pointed top on the roof. Next, you will have the victorian greenhouse which is going to be more efficient to heat and cool because of its gable roof. It is possible to also build greenhouses that resemble barns with their straight walls and plenty of space. Using backyard greenhouse plans you can build a greenhouse that you can be proud of. Grow anything you want all year round. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh_rbj32mOw

1: Barn Greenhouse If you want to build a mini greenhouse, this wooden barn greenhouse plan would work best for you. Get started by working on the idea given below: Cut the wall framing from the boards (wood) you have available – you can even purchase it for a few dollars easily.for the side paneling you can use roofing tin, it would provide strength to the house as well. You can use metal flashing to trim the corners of the panels. Also, this type of greenhouse’s entire structure is covered with corrugated roofing. 2: Lumber Frame Greenhouse You can make a smart 8ft in height greenhouse with a beautiful garden – all you need is a lumber frame for the foundation, big window frames for ventilation, and a door of course. You can nail the frame and fix it in the garden with stakes. 3: Hoop Style Greenhouse Plan Wood for laying out the basic foundation – measurements solely depend upon the area you want to cover. Rebar for making the hoop stand – take the open ended PVC pipes and fix them on the hoop stands. For the better grip, you can simply use screws to tight the PVC pipe and the stand. In order to provide strength to the circular frame, insert strong PVC pipe at the top. Cover the entire naked greenhouse with plastic sheet and attach it with the lathe. Lastly, do not forget to add the door, the basic wood frame which has plastic covering all around; and you are done. hoop style green house 4: Small Greenhouse The first step is to build the side frames – also, you must cut the ends of the studs keeping 8 inch difference. After that you must drill pilot holes in the frames and fix them with the screws. Likewise you can make the front and the back of the greenhouse – place the horizontal plates of this structure and in the similar manner, fix them with screws; you will find it an easier process. Lastly, make the door with basic wooden frame and place it on the front side – in order to provide the perfect professional touch, you can coat the entire joint area with the paint of your choice. 5: $50 Greenhouse Plan Hoop like greenhouse are very popular – here is another plan for getting a tunnel type greenhouse, these are ideal to have a small greenhouse garden too. You can construct the basic frame from pressure or compressed lumber. They last for at least 3 years even if the weather it at worst. You can leave the door open while making the structure – for the covering or top, you can use clear sheets or plastic. In the market you can easily find a special type of greenhouse sheets too. Last but not the least, insert or attach PVC pipes at the sides of the wooden structure so that it maintains the shape of the hoop. For details just go through this 50$ green house plan. 6: Dome Shaped Greenhouse If you love assembling the broken triangles, you must construct this kind of a greenhouse – it’s beautiful. You would not see this normally everywhere because it requires time to get completed. You can simply lay the foundations by fixing it in the ground with stakes. The tough part comes in when you have to get the wood cut in equal length and width – moreover, assembling takes time. You need to have proper measurement and a diagram to get a perfect shape. However, it is fun – you can cover the entire structure with a special kind of greenhouse sheet so get the perfect desired look. 7: Scrap Window Greenhouse This kind of project just requires you to make the most of the old and unwanted window frames that are lying in your junkyard. Simply make the basic wooden structure (foundation) and with the help of screws adjust and assemble the windows on it. You can add tin roofing and add glass to the windows which have broken ones. Simply add flowers to it so that beauty can be enhanced. 8: Scrap Door Greenhouse You must be having some old doors in your storeroom – it is the perfect time to take them out and make most of them. Follow the idea of simplest greenhouse and instead of side paneling, simply use the old doors – add tin roofing or plastic sheets to make a gorgeous and effective greenhouse for your west garden. 9: Pyramid Shape Greenhouse You can also make a greenhouse, a stylish one by doing: Take two doors and attach them from the hinges – place them on the ground in such a way that it looks like an inverted “V” – you can simply keep your plants under this – enjoy gardening! 10: Plastic Bottle Greenhouse I am not sure whether you would be able to collect a 1000 bottle – it is very interesting though! Within the simplest greenhouse structure made from wood, you can insert the collected plastic bottles to get the desired kind of greenhouse. I think this idea can work best for smaller space; you would need to add fewer bottles and get the task done easily.

LDS Prepper realizes walipini might not be a good design for northern areas because it was designed for equatorial areas. So he used his ingenuity to figure out what would address the problems that walipinis could address. We wait to see if his geothermal design can handle our -30F cold and high winds. For my Retractable Hoop-house project, I re-purposed as many materials possible for this project. The plastic is clamped on with black poly pipe that has been cut (there are plenty of how-to's). The pvc tees were marked down a 5 cents each at Lowe's, though ended up spending $20 in steel nipples and fittings as the original threaded couplers are too weak as I discovered. An easy way around that would be to just buy non-threaded tee's. As the summer sun gets intense in Denver, I change the plastic out for a shade cloth.. I don't mind that the sides are short as it provides ventilation on days that I don't take time to retract the green house covering. I recall seeing someone's drawing on how to do this. The parts were more complicated and this idea came to mind - nearly anyone should be able to do this type of DIY Project. music by: https://soundcloud.com/joakimkarud "Dreams" https://soundcloud.com/deetunez "Ocean"
