Previous E-bike Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYXreeuv3Jw in this video i build the second 24v 24ah lithium battery block for my 48v 24ah bicycle battery. i built this pack from low quality 18650 cells. each 6 cell pack cost 4.99$ so thats only about 85 cents per cell. even if they are low quality that is wonderfully useful. in this video when i say a cell is "unstable" i mean it is more likely to short out when it's voltage is dropped due to metal buildup on the plates. the main differances between good quality cells and poor quality cells such as these are due to the cheep cells being made of lower quality materials. some of the differances include 1: lower chemical-electrical conversion efficiency 2: lower capacity 3: faster self-discharge rate 4: shorter life span these characteristics dont ruin their functionality though, they are wonderfully useful even at the worst quality. ~~music used~~ Zelda Wind Waker: departure Scrapheap Challenge (junkyard wars) background music several songs from Jersey Devil for playstation 1

Well most people know that you need a deep cycle battery for your second battery, something that has depth of charge so that it can go up and down and hold the load of what you are trying to carry. Now there are all sorts of different ones, there is AGM, there is Gell, there is Lead Crystal, there is Silver Calcium, there is Lead Acid. There is a lot to choose from. Now we are going to work on three main batteries. We are going to talk about the Lithium, the Lead Crystal and the AGM. The Lithium is a lot lighter and I can pick it up really really easy, if you have got a weight issue that is the one you are probably going to use. Now just keep in mind they come in at nearly three times the price of the other batteries. Now the old AGM, the batteries that i have used probably for the last 14 years, I know it's load bearing so it can handle pretty much any kind of fridge, and C-PAP machine and this is an important thing that you need and it lasts for years. Then you have the latest technology and that is the lead crystal no again it is a heavier battery, not as heavy as the agm at 38 kilos, this comes in at around the 34 kilos so they are still very heavy, but I can flatten this i can bring it back up, i can flatten it. We get a ton of questions regarding batteries, so we scoured the world, did a little digging, and researched the topic. Now you'll have some real answers on battery recharging cycles, whether you'll need to unplug your device once it's fully charged or not, if you need to condition your battery to avoid the memory effect, and even some information on who and when current rechargeable batteries came into existence. Please add to the discussion if you have any REAL information - leave the old wives' tales on Kim Komando's channel. Thanks. Lithium batteries were proposed by M. S. Whittingham while working for Exxon in the 1970s. However, Whittingham’s rechargeable lithium battery was extremely expensive and smelly. In 1983, Michael Thackeray, John Goodenough, and coworkers further developed a lower-cost alternative that worked better and didn’t smell. Two years later, Akira Yoshino improved the design, enabling industrial-scale production. In 1989, Goodenough and the University of Texas at Austin figured out how to make the design even better and more powerful, and that lead to the rechargeable lithium ion batteries we use today. There is no “memory effect” as there was with older rechargeables, and battery calibration software is unnecessary nonsense. The lithium ion battery does have a few weaknesses. First, they hate extreme cold, or extreme heat. Fortunately, they work really well in temperatures that work for humans. So keep them out of the freezer and away from a hot car, and you’ll be golden. Secondly, all batteries die eventually. First, they’ll lose their capacity to hold a full charge, so you’ll notice them dying faster and requiring more plugging in. Then, they’ll refuse to charge at all. Most lithium-ion batteries have a rated lifetime of somewhere between 300 and 1,000 charge cycles. Drops and falls can damage the internal components, causing dangerous leaks, so be careful. Finally, lithium ion batteries are expensive and often not easy or nearly impossible to replace. Apple devices especially do not want you to open their devices, using gobs of Chinese glue and freakishly weird screws to make it as difficult as possible.

I’ve upgraded from a single battery to a 4-Battery battery bank. The 12v drop-in lithium battery would have been fine, but we have been eyeing up more boondocking to free us from RV parks! Our first true test is in a couple of weeks for 2 weeks of dry camping at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival, so check back for a post mortem on how we did. I went from a single 12v flooded lead deep cycle battery to a set of 4 lithium 100amp hour drop-in replacements from Battle Born Batteries. In addition, I’ve added a 1000 watt inverter from Xantrex and also added a Victron BMV-702 battery monitor with Bluetooth connection. Here I show the 4 batteries wired in parallel, the big “oh crap” fuse, the battery disconnect, and a circuit breaker for the inverter so I can isolate it. I also had to expand the battery box of my Palomino/Forest River Sabre 36QBOK in order to accommodate all 4 batteries. Discharging During the first stage of discharge lithium atoms oxidize by forming Li+ ions and electrons, whereas Li+ ions move to the positive electrode diffusing through the electrolyte and the separator. The electrons flow from the negative electrode to the positive on the external circuitry, where the resulting current flow can be used for an application. At the positive electrode the electrons recombine with the Li+ ions and are stored in the molecular structure of the active material. Charging: If an external voltage with the same polarity is applied between the current collectors, the charge process will start. The lithium atoms leave the metal oxid structure and ionize into Li+ ions under the release of an electron of each one. In analogy with the discharge process Li+ ions diffuse to the negative electrode. At the surface of the graphite particles the Li+ ions and electrons recombine with each other forming neutral lithium atoms and are reintercalated into the molecular structure of the graphite particles.

The success of electric vehicles depends largely on their energy storage system. Lithium-ion batteries currently feature the best properties to meet the wide range of requirements specific to automotive applications – high energy density, long lifetime, good power capabilities and low cost. However, the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries can be problematic if they are not handled appropriately. Exposing lithium ion batteries to extremely high or low temperatures, voltages or excessive currents results in accelerated battery degradation and in the worst case, battery failure. There is a range of chemistry used in lithium ion batteries but the best chemistries for electric bicycles are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and lithium manganese. LiFePO4 has advantages of being the safest and longest lasting, while LiMn has a higher power to weight ratio, and also very high life time. It is important to use a lithium ion battery designed for an electric bike as they have battery management systems inside them to limit excessive discharge, control maximum discharge rate and balance charge between cells when charging. Lithium ion batteries must be specifically designed due to the presence of a battery management system (BMS) within the pack. This piece of circuitry must be set appropriately to control the amount of current draw required by the motor and to limit excessive discharge capacity. The BMS is also important for balancing cell charge between the individual cells within the battery to maintain battery life over time Not all batteries are created equal even though the voltage and Amp hour ratings are. So what does the C rating on a battery mean? the C stands for capacity. The C rating is the maximum safe continuous discharge rate of a battery pack. If you see 2C on your battery, it means it can be discharged at 2 times that pack’s capacity. Capacity refers to the Amp-hour rating of the battery. Calculating a battery's capacity. Here’s an example, using a 10Ah 5C rated battery. 10Ah – 5C. 10 Amps (Ah capacity) x 5 (C-rating) = 50 amps continuous discharge. This means that you can safely draw up to 50 amps continuously from that 36V 10Ah 5C battery without doing damage to your battery. Though often more expensive than the lower-grade lithium chemical compounds that can be sourced from China and other areas, some cell manufacturers sources its raw materials from Japanese suppliers, the best in the world. This pays off in overall higher quality control, cell stability, and safety in the end products. How to build a lithium ion electric bike battery pack from recovered used laptop batteries. Save hundreds of dollars by salvaging 18650 li-ion cells from used or even dead laptop batteries bought off eBay. My pack is 24 volt 20AH which should hopefully provide a 30-45 mile range per charge on my ebike (and cost less than $150 dollars). In the video I show you how to calculate the capacity, then wire and test the completed battery. UPDATE: The battery had a total capacity of 19aH. The groups of cells were slightly out of balance (3.3v, 2.5v, 2.9v, 2.5v, 3.1v, 2.9v) so I could rearrange some cells and get a few extra miles, but I'm happy enough with the results. Here is our initial reaction to the first test of the Relion RB100 battery. We've been selling a lot of these with great results. Discharge rate is everything and we've measured up to 129 Amps output, which is outstanding for a battery of this size and weight (Manufacturers maximum output rating is 100 Amps). We were able to pull about 100 Amps out for about an hour which makes this a whole new ball game. Lithium vs Lead acid is like an airplane vs. a horse and buggy! We just did a Sprinter conversion with 2 of these and a 2500W Cotek Pure Sine inverter and were able to run an air conditioner and a heat gun at the same time! A setup like this means we can easily run the stuff that takes a lot of power, like microwaves, hot water heaters, induction cook tops, toasters, hairdryers, big tools, etc. With the right solar panels charging a system like this, we can start to look at making the propane systems obsolete. These are game changers for portable power, the death of the generator has begun. This year at the Intersolar trade show we saw a 2KW 48 volt battery capable of 12,000 Watt discharge rate! Virtually undoable with Lead Acid, and it was a tiny battery. Get ready for the future. Lithium ion batteries are all around us. In our homes, our cars, even on our person at nearly all times. And so when a cell phone, laptop, or car battery explodes it can rightfully be a cause for concern. However, there’s a lot that goes into the creation of any single lithium ion cell and even a small error at a given point in that process could lead to big problems during the battery’s life cycle. Greg Less, Michigan Engineering’s Battery User Facility’s Manager discusses not only why and how the lithium ion batteries that we all use so frequently might explode, but how researchers at the University of Michigan are trying to change the way batteries are made for a safer and more efficient future. ABOUT THE PROFESSOR Greg Less is the Senior Laboratory Manager at the UMEI Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
