Animal Protein The saturated fats and “marble fat” found in meat, pork, poultry and shell-fish is horrible for your health and cholesterol levels. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy. 10 High Cholesterol Foods You Must Avoid 1. Whole-Fat Dairy Products Go easy on milk products that have more than 1% milk fat, for instance cheeses (most of them), cream and nondairy coffee creamers. Fat-free milk, toned milk and non-fat dairy products are any day better than whole-fat dairy. 2. Egg Yolks Eggs are a high protein food with lots of health benefits. However the egg yolk is loaded with cholesterol and can cause lot of harm. It is advisable to have egg whites and eliminate that yellow part. 3. Fast Foods Fast foods like burgers, tacos, fries, packed chips and fried chicken are high in both total fat and saturated fat. You can replace these with healthier options like broiled sandwiches, salads with low fat dressing and foods that are not fried. 4. Meat, Poultry and Fish These products are good for health when taken in regulated quantity. Limit these to no more than 5 oz (140 g) a day. Also balance these out by consuming other low-cholesterol foods. 5. Ice-creams Apparently ice-creams are a high cholesterol food item. These have more fat than a deep-fried snack! You may turn to homemade fruit ice-creams to satiate those cravings. 6. Alcohol A limited amount of alcohol is not harmful; in fact it might have positive effects on your heart. However excessive drinking, especially hard liquor, can raise cholesterol levels to an unwanted degree. 7. Baked Food Items Yes, you need to cut down on those muffins, cakes, quick breads and croissants. This strawberry ice cream recipe does not require any special equipment as it does not need to churn. It gets it's creaminess from whipped evaporated milk and whipping cream. There are 2 very important secrets for the absolute success of this dessert. The first one is your evaporated milk and cream must be very, very cold. So go ahead and place them in the freezer for a good 20 minutes before you start making this. If possible place your bowl in the freezer as well. The processed meats like bacon, sausages, ham, beef sticks are high in cholesterol. These foods are very common and eaten with bread and hamburger. They are considered as a good choice for the busy people. But you should avoid these foods. For a healthier option, prepare skinless chicken breast by grilling or baking to minimize the fat content. 4. These unhealthy fats build up cholesterol in the arteries, causing damage to the body cells and your heart. Prepare your potatoes by boiling or baking, a healthier option for your body. 5. Ice Cream Some of the best-tasting desserts are actually some of the worst when it comes to raising your cholesterol levels. Ice cream is made by a mixture containing high-fat milk or cream, glucose-based sweeteners, and flavorings such as chocolate or vanilla. This is definitely not a good food option to eat regularly if you're concerned about your cholesterol. An average serving of vanilla ice cream contains almost 5 grams of saturated fat, which makes up for a quarter of the maximum recommended daily intake. 6. Processed Meat Food products such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs and cold cuts are generally classified as unhealthy. Daily consumption of processed meat raises LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease. There is also growing evidence that links processed meats to diabetes and several types of cancer, particularly colon cancer. 7. Microwave Popcorn Popcorn is low in calories and high in fiber, preparing it the right way is in fact a healthy snack. Once you are ready to build your ChipWhich set ups your work station. You will need your cookies, ice cream, chocolate chips, and plastic wrap ready to go. Scoop about 3 tablespoons of ice-cream on top of one cookie halve. Place another cookie on top and gently press the cookie down until the ice cream is spread evenly between the cookies and you have a sammie. Roll the edges of the ice-cream sandwich in the chocolate chips and then wrap in the plastic wrap. Then roll the wrapped sammie like a wheel to make sure the chips stick to the ice cream. Pop in the freezer and repeat until you have finished all your cookies. *Note: if your ice cream gets to soft, pop it back int he freezer for a few minutes until it has firmed up a bit and then continue. You will end up with 9 ChipWhich Sandwiches. When you are want to eat them, remove the plastic wrap and enjoy! Coconut Mango Ice Cream recipe is easy to prepare, no eggs are used and is made by using the base of heavy whipped cream and sweetened condensed milk, flavored with coconut extract and cream and then swirled with mango puree. It’s quick, delicious, refreshing, and much much better than store bought ice creams. Peel and dice the mangoes. Transfer into the bowl of a food processor and blend until puree is formed. 2. In a large bowl whip cream until stiff peaks are formed. 3. Add in the condensed milk,coconut cream and coconut extract and mix in gently with a spatula. 4. Pour ⅓ of coconut mixture in a 8 X 12 inch (20x30cm) container. 5. Pour ⅓ of mango puree. 6. I've been playing around with this recipe for awhile now and finally feel like I nailed it. It's got a great combination of sweet, savory and exotic flavors. The egg yolk gives it an almost ice cream like quality... the coconut milk... a nice smoothness, and the pecans add an element of homemade pie. Of course, the pumpkin and spices make up the earthy base where all the other flavors can dance around. It's an all around symphony of delight! (Can you tell I love this one, people?) Here's the recipe for an individual meal or two snack-sized portions: INGREDIENTS 1 cup frozen pumpkin puree (I put in ice cube trays) 1 frozen banana (be sure to unpeel before you freeze) 1 cup light coconut milk (While I'm usually all about the fat, in this instance, the full fat variety would tip this smoothie over the 700 calorie mark!) 1 raw egg yolk from fresh pastured eggs 5 pecan halves Dashes of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sea salt DIRECTIONS Pour 1 cup of light coconut milk into blender. Chop up your frozen banana and add to milk. Blend till smooth. Add in ½ of your frozen pumpkin with spices. Blend till smooth. Add other ½ of frozen pumpkin. Blend till smooth.
