For additional information visit http://www.cancerquest.org/david-flockhart-interview. Dr. David Flockhart, Harry and Edith Gladstein Chair in Cancer Genomics and Professor of Medicine in Medical Genetics and Pharmacology at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Flockhart's research focuses on the individual ways that different people respond to cancer treatments.  The differences are important in predicting the outcome of the treatment and is based, in part, on their genetic make-up.  Pharmacogenomics is a field that studies this relationship and Dr. Flockhart is developing new tools to study this interaction.  Ultimately his work could yield new treatments or better ways to use existing treatments.  In the interview he discusses the evolution of treatment in breast cancer. Breast Care Center of Indiana - SAVI® applicator for early-stage breast cancer

01:24
The SAVI® applicator is an evolution in radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer. Delivering treatment from inside the breast, SAVI uses multiple catheters to direct radiation where it is needed most. This unique design allows for unparalleled dose sculpting ability that minimizes exposure to healthy tissue and reduces complications, making the benefits of breast brachytherapy available to more women. The SAVI applicator was designed to treat the tissue closest to the removed tumor by fitting into the lumpectomy cavity and delivering targeted radiation through multiple catheters. Prior to expansion, the physician places the applicator into the lumpectomy cavity through a small incision. The physician expands the catheter bundle to conform to the inside of the cavity. Each catheter independently delivers radiation to the tissue which allows the physician to customize the radiation dose. This customized approach minimizes the amount of radiation exposure while targeting the tissue most at risk for recurrence. After delivery of the prescribed radiation dose, the physician closes the catheter bundle and removes the SAVI applicator.

Kiwi Simone from New Zealand had been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2013 and after surgery, palliative radiation and various other treatments, little had changed. Indeed, they’d only got worse as her tumour cells continued relentlessly and metastasised to the bone marrow. Simone’s journey has been made a little easier through encountering a fellow New Zealander at SPDT 4 LIFE who had a similar diagnosis, had trodden a similar and largely ineffective medical path back home and was about to return to #NewZealand after highly successful #SPDT treatment.
