Getting to know Jodie A. Armstrong, M.D., F.A.C.S., a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, diseases and surgery of the anterior segment at Ocala Eye. “Hi, I'm Jodie Armstrong, and I’m an ophthalmologist here at Ocala Eye,” says Dr. Armstrong. “I’ve been here for twelve years, and I specialize in cataract surgery and diseases of the anterior segment.” “I was born and raised in Ocala. When I was fourteen, I visited Ocala Eye for the first time, and I toured with Dr. Schwenk, who has since retired. I graduated from Forest High School, and then I went away to college and kept in touch with the guys at Ocala Eye. I would come back during (school) breaks, just to see what they were up to. I would go into surgery with them and see patients with them.” “I trained at Georgetown, graduated from Georgetown, and I also did my internship there,” Dr. Armstrong continues. “I did my residency at UT San Antonio in Texas. Doctors Jank and Deaton both graduated from that program. After a little bit of time, we decided we wanted to move up to Central Florida and get back to family. I approached the guys here at Ocala Eye, and they brought me up, and then they hired me.” “When you come to see me at Ocala Eye, I do general eye exams, look at the general health of the eye and screen for diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, cataract, and refractive error. I have been doing cataract surgery here for about twelve years, and I've been doing cataract surgery in general for about fifteen years. We also do special testing to look at the focus of the eye to help us determine the best way to correct your vision whether it be glasses or contacts, or surgery. And we provide the ability to correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, in addition to correcting cataracts.” “Thanks for watching. I'm Dr. Armstrong. Come to see me at Ocala Eye soon.” For more visit https://ocalaeye.com/ To learn about the services we offer visit https://ocalaeye.com/services/ To learn more about Dr. Armstrong visit https://ocalaeye.com/jodie-armstrong-md/ For more patient resources visit https://ocalaeye.com/patient-resources/ Jodie A. This lecture is part of the IHMC Evening Lecture series. https://www.ihmc.us/life/evening_lectures/ For the past 60 years there has been a concerted effort to demonize saturated fats, found in animal products and tropical oils, and cholesterol, in our food and blood. Despite the well-established health benefits of diets rich in cholesterol and saturated fat, flawed, deceptive and biased research has created the myth that a low fat, plant-based diet is ideal for good health. I will deliver an update on a talk I gave 2 years ago at the IHMC in Ocala, which will provide a historical perspective on how poorly conducted epidemiological research, U.S. government intervention and misinformation conveyed by contemporary lifestyle researchers have contributed to the current state of confusion on dietary influences on health. In addition, I will discuss how biased research has created the false appearance that high levels of serum cholesterol cause heart disease. I will describe how researchers have used deceptive statistics to give health care providers and the public the false impression that statins produce a dramatic reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality. I will point out that the miniscule benefits of statins are offset by their well-documented adverse effects, such as promoting the development of type 2 diabetes, cognitive impairments, cataracts, muscle pain and wasting, and increased incidence of cancer. This talk will serve as a wake-up call for the public to educate themselves as to how to optimize their diet and cardiovascular health. David. M. Diamond received his Ph.D. in Biology in 1985, with a specialization in Behavioral Neuroscience, from the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine. He is a professor in the Departments of Psychology and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida, where he has directed his research program on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Diamond has served on federal government study sections and committees evaluating research on the neurobiology of stress and memory, and has over 100 publications, reviews and book chapters on the brain and memory. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals and has received 30 years of federally funded support for his research. In the past decade, Dr. Diamond has expanded his research program to include cardiovascular disease and nutrition. His controversial research is an extension of an advanced seminar he directs at the University of South Florida entitled “Myths and Deception in Medical Research”, which emphasizes the critical evaluation of methods and conflicts of interest in health-related research. In recent years he added to his list of publications controversial papers on diet, cholesterol and statins, including one paper published in the peer-reviewed medical journal “Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology”, which described the deceptive practices employed by researchers promoting statins for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Diamond has been invited to present his myth-busting views on nutrition and cholesterol to lay people and physicians at nutrition, cardiology, obesity and diabetes conferences all over the world.

HeartMath announces the HeartMath Caritas National Pilot Program. Partnering with distinguished professor Dr. Jean Watson and the Watson Caring Science Institute, the program aims to restore the "care" in healthcare by transforming current healing models beyond the "fix it" approach where healthcare solutions can overly focus on drugs and surgery as the sole answer. The HeartMath Caritas model emphasizes the positive impact that human care brings to the healing process of the patient. The model does not exclude the importance of current practices but rather honors "true care" as a critical component in wholeness healing. The emphasis on care benefits the overall healthcare environment, uniting staff in a shared and focused commitment to improve and care for the lives of others. Many healthcare sites around the country are participating in this pilot program including, Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center in California, Samaritan Medical Center in Verona, New York, Baptist Health Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Aimee Schubert, a registered nurse at Bon Secours, St. Mary's Hospital of Richmond, Virginia talks about her experience using HeartMath's applications and Dr. Jean Watson's theory on "caring science." To learn more about the HeartMath's scientifically validated programs, applications and emWave technologies for healthcare organizations as well as the HeartMath Caritas National Pilot Program go to www.heartmath.com. To Audrey Boyles, being a mom has been one of the most amazing experiences. But just two weeks after her second child was born, Audrey needed gall bladder surgery—but Audrey was nursing a newborn at the time. "I actually had a nurse climb up in the bed with me helping me try to figure out how to nurse this newborn baby after surgery." Audrey calls it a "Munroe Moment." We call it a typical day at Munroe Regional. "I saw just how much these people truly care about their jobs. And it's not just a job to them. e sincerity of the people who work there is just phenomenal! I can still remember every one of their names. And that's why Munroe Regional is my hospital." Audrey's story is just one more reason why there is a real difference in the quality of care at Munroe Regional. But it's no surprise. After all, as the only community owned hospital in Marion County, we believe that every one of our patients, every citizen of Marion County—anyone who entrusts their care, their family, their children and their life to Munroe Regional— deserves the best. We believe that you deserve a hospital this good.

Marion County Sheriff's Office 1 hr · MCSO K9 DEPUTY SAVES BABY'S LIFE At approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Marion County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) K9 Deputy Jeremie Nix was on his way home from his shift when he was flagged down by a motorist as he was stopped at a red light at the intersection of SE Lake Weir Avenue and SE 17th Street. The motorist told Deputy Nix that her 3-month old baby boy named Kingston was completely unresponsive and that she needed help. Deputy Nix turned his patrol car around and pulled off the side of the road to assist with the medical emergency. After performing several life-saving measures on the child and not seeing any improvement, Deputy Nix decided to put the child in his own patrol car and rush him to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Deputy Nix delivered the child to medical personnel, who then began treating the child. We are happy to report that Baby Kingston is doing very well and doctors say he will make a full recovery!! Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix's actions, Baby Kingston is alive today.
