ESL Teaching Tips: A Lesson Plan for Your Very First Day

04:05
Here are some quick tips for new ESL teachers. This video focuses on developing a workable lesson plan, in this case, I present a plan for what I found to be a fairly successful introductory lesson for both elementary and middle school. At first, you might be tempted to write out elaborate and detailed plans for your ESL classes, where the lesson plan almost becomes a script to be read, rather than a rough guide. This kind of lesson plan is nearly certain to fail miserably. Flexibility is critical to a good lesson plan. Repetition and variation is needed to help the students retain the information covered in class. Try to design a lesson plan in modules, with each chunk being 5-25 minutes. The most important one should come first, and, with a flexible modular design, if the important lesson runs long, one of the latter modules can be eliminated, or covered during the next class. And remember: languages are not learned by listening to a lecture given in that language; language is acquired by engaging with it, by actively using it. If you only remember one thing, remember this: Your students should be talking far more than you are. ~Kyle Clements

Fraction kits have been around for a while and many effective math teachers use them to help their students gain a stronger grasp of fractions. This video demonstrates my approach to creating a fraction kit and was designed to serve as a follow-along activity. Unlike our animated math lessons, this VLOG will walk you through a hands on, real world math activity that explores fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, number sense, and even as a decimals introduction activity later on. This fun math activity is perfect for homeschool, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and middle school and even high school as well. The required materials for such math activities include construction paper, markers, scissors, and a ruler. Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students. This lesson is aligned with the common core learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event. 7.SP.C.7 Develop a probability model and use it to find probabilities of events. The only way you will ever need to teach theme

07:00
More on my blog: http://guidingontheside.blogspot.com/ Broken down into the cognitive steps, students can determine theme with the support of modeling and collaboration. This video shows the strategy for introducing the concept (even though kids in 8th grade were exposed WHAT theme is in prior years, I never assume they were taught HOW to figure it out). After doing this strategy with passing the paper and creating multiple themes, it is simply a matter of reminding students throughout the school year that in order to determine theme you just need to follow these basic steps.

Steven's Five Minute TFA Lesson Plan

06:12
*Edit: This is the first rough draft of my TFA Five Minute Lesson Plan which I revised to include a second visual aid, and polished language. I was accepted as a 2013 corps member and will do my best to answer any questions potential corps members may have as you prepare for final interviews.* This is my five minute lesson plan which I am practicing for my final interview for TFA on Tuesday. I would love any and all feedback on how to make my plan more effective. I know I made a mistake when I was speaking in my example sentence, "Sammie dunked on LeBron," but I'm confident I will be more aware in my following practice sessions. The two most important aspects of the lesson are: 1) That by the end of the lesson, students should fully understand the objective. 2) That I am prepared, focused and all of my actions support student learning of the objective. My objective: Students will be able to recognize and revise simple sentences written in the passive voice. Subject: Ninth Grade English My final interview is on Tuesday, so I have time to make small revisions based on feedback. Thanks for all your help!

Empower adolescents and teens to make better food choices and improve their health with this five-lesson online nutrition program. Key concepts covered in the Eat Move Win program include: what is a healthy weight/BMI, the importance of eating breakfast and getting enough sleep, what macronutrients and micronutrients we need to function best, and how to set SMART goals. This video explains the benefits of eating a breakfast that is made up of three specific food groups from the five food groups, so you can have hours of energy for learning and physical activity (Lesson 4). Research shows that students who eat breakfast perform better on standardized tests, have more energy for learning and physical activity, eat more nutritious diets in general and snack less late at night. Eat Move Win is an online nutrition curriculum for middle and high school students from Dairy Council of California. Additional information can be found at http://www.healthyeating.org/EMW.
