What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem. SB Projects also continues to impact new verticals under its tech incubator, Silent Labs, which holds investments in Uber, Spotify, Songza, Casper, Waze, and Pinterest among others. As Braun continues to expand SB Projects, he remains committed to the company’s founding philosophy of giving back and designs a philanthropic element for each new initiative. The organization has helped to build more than 400 schools in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He is also on the board of Fuck Cancer, an organization focused on prevention and early detection of cancer, which his wife Yael Braun co-founded. Have you ever had an emotional freak out over a breakup with a partner, fight with a family member, huge financial pressures or simply feel like everything is crashing down on you? This can cause you to feel stuck in your emotional turmoil and leave you paralysed from not being able to control your situation. After much trial and error, I have discovered 8 powerful methods to move you quickly from your negative state and get you attracting solutions and better outcomes. Most of the methods I learned are what some men do naturally. Men seem to be more stable in difficult times as they don’t invest as much emotion in them as women. I read an insightful quote from a blogger named Patrick Allen “ ...accepting failure, being okay with not getting what you want right now, is one of the best, best success strategies, but it takes mental toughness…” and “Learn to delay gratification and let things go” It’s human nature to try and fix things or take control over people and situations to make you feel safe and secure. It feels uncomfortable to allow things to be and not feel panic. It may be hard, but resist reacting to situations until the time is right for you to respond. I have come to realise that all my painful experiences have pushed me to be more in every way. I now choose to never waste an opportunity to grow as my pain tells me I need to change. So now, I cut to the chase and just get working on myself. It has taken me years to even realise there are shortcuts to overcoming emotional stress. It is all about working on yourself instead of what is happening around you.

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) In this lecture, Professor Blight begins his engagement with Reconstruction. Reconstruction, Blight suggests, might best be understood as an extended referendum on the meaning of the Civil War. Even before the war's end, various constituencies in the North attempted to control the shape of the post-war Reconstruction of the South. In late 1863, President Abraham Lincoln offered his lenient "Ten Percent Plan." Six months later, Congressional Republicans concerned by Lincoln's charity rallied behind the more radical provisions of the Wade-Davis Bill. Despite their struggle for control over Reconstruction, Congressional Radicals and President Lincoln managed to work together on two vital pieces of Reconstruction legislation in the first months of 1865--the 13th Amendment, which outlawed slavery in the United States, and the Freedmen's Bureau bill. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction to Reconstruction 05:11 - Chapter 2. Reconstruction as a Forum to Understand the Civil War 13:37 - Chapter 3. The Early Debates on Reconstruction and Lincoln's Ten-Percent Plan 24:49 - Chapter 4. The Development of the Wade-Davis Manifesto 36:04 - Chapter 5. This third instalment in our series on social paediatrics will take a more focussed look at vulnerable populations, including inner city and aboriginal children and youth. The panel will provide an overview of the vulnerabilities of inner city youth who are at greater risk of school failure, substance use, adjudication, parenthood, and poor mental health as compared to their non-urban counterparts. We will also discuss mechanisms to foster resilience among youth living in the inner city, and will look at some of the aspects of these issues that might uniquely affect Canada's aboriginal population as well. The discussion will finish by asking whether it is time to develop a curriculum that covers the various issues of social paediatrics, and embed this in the education of paediatricians and other healthcare providers.
chapter 15: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn. ~ Chapter 15, "Self-Help in Hard Times" covers the government's campaign to destroy the IWW, and the factors leading to the Great Depression. Zinn states that, despite popular belief, the 1920s were not a time of prosperity, and the problems of the Depression were simply the chronic problems of the poor extended to the rest of the society. Also covered is the Communist Party's attempts to help the poor during the Depression.

In which John Green teaches you about the Mexican-American War in the late 1840s, and the expansion of the United States into the western end of North America. In this episode of Crash Course, US territory finally reaches from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. After Oregon was secured from the UK and the southwest was ceded by Mexico, that is. Famous Americans abound in this episode, including James K Polk (Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump), Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, and Winfield Scott. You'll also learn about the California Gold Rush of 1848, and California's admission as a state, which necessitated the Compromise of 1850. Once more slavery is a crucial issue. Something is going to have to be done about slavery, I think. Maybe it will come to a head next week. Does the Left Have a Future? 2017–2018 Dean's Lecture in the Social Sciences Nearly everywhere in Europe and the United States, the left is mired in crisis: its intellectuals and activists strike defensive poses and debate how to revive the fortunes of a cause whose adherents once believed they could and would shape the future. Michael Kazin, a professor of history at Georgetown University and expert in US politics and social movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, discusses how this crisis occurred and reflects on how the left—both radical and liberal—might move forward again. Synopsis Jordan's Principle is a child-first principle intended to ensure that status First Nations children living on-reserve do not experience delay or disruption of services as a result of jurisdictional disputes between governments or government departments over payment for services. It is named in honour of Jordan River Anderson, a child from Norway House First Nation, who died in hospital after Federal and Provincial governments spent over two years arguing over payment for his at-home care. Jordan's Principle was unanimously passed in the House of Commons in 2007, but the Canadian Paediatric Society reports that neither the Federal government nor any of the Provinces/Territories have fully implemented Jordan's Principle. Moreover, while service providers and First Nations advocates provide anecdotal evidence to suggest there may be many situations in which First Nations children living on-reserve experience delay, disruption, or denial of services normally available to other children, the Federal government indicated in both 2011 and 2012 that it knew of no Jordan's Principles cases. To date, there has been no systematic documentation of the number or nature of cases in which First Nations children living on-reserve experience delay, disruption, or denial of services normally available to other children. Nor has there been any systematic documentation of the structural differences, in processes for accessing or providing services, which might contribute to disparities in services for First Nations children living on-reserve and for other children. In this webinar, we will provide an overview and update on the implementation of Jordan's Principle in Canada. We will discuss the narrow operational definition of Jordan's Principle adopted by the Federal government, review the Canadian Pediatric Society's report card on Jordan's Principle implementation, and assess the implications of a recent court ruling (the Pictou Landing Band Council & Maurina Beadle v. Canada) for the implementation of Jordan's Principle. In addition, we will introduce a research study being conducted by researchers at McGill University, working in partnership with the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres, the Assembly of First Nations, UNICEF Canada, and the Canadian Paediatric Society. The goal of the study is to systematically document differences in processes for accessing or providing health and social services for First Nations children living on-reserve and for other children. Webinar participants will be invited to give feedback on the study design, to consider participating in the study, and to attend a follow-up webinar presenting preliminary research findings. Presenter Bios Vandna Sinha is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at McGill University. Her research explores the ways that minority and marginalized communities support and care for their members in light of resource limitations, restrictions imposed by social policies and other factors which limit members' quality of life and access to opportunity. She conducts community-engaged research which supports efforts to develop and improve community based health and social services for children and families. Dr. Sinha is principal investigator for the First Nations component of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2008), working closely with a First Nations advisory committee to oversee the most comprehensive national level study of First Nations child welfare investigations ever completed in Canada. She also collaborates with representatives of diverse minority communities on a number of projects supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of services for families and children. Lucyna Lach is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, McGill University and an Associate Member of the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology/Neurosurgery in the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. She has a special interest in health-related quality of life and parenting of children with chronic health conditions and disabilities. Dr. Lach is principal investigator for the Quebec subsample of the pan-Canadian study on Outcome Trajectories in Children with Epilepsy, a study examining determinants of health related quality of life in this population. She is also co-principal investigator of the CIHR Team in PARENTING MATTERS! The Biopsychosocial Context Of Parenting Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders In Canada. Working closely with parents, clinical and institutional leaders, and policy makers, Dr. Lach hopes to increase awareness of what constitutes parenting, what makes a difference to how parents parent their child, and what difference parenting makes to child outcomes.
Tony Robbins: FOCUS ON WHAT YOU HAVE Do you tend to focus on what you have or what’s missing? We’ve all had some area in our life that we said we are going to change. Whether it’s our relationship, our business, finances, career, health — we all have something that we want to take to the next level, but for one reason or another, we just never made it happen. Maybe we pulled back too soon, or didn’t follow through. Maybe we made an excuse or even sabotaged it before we had a chance to start. Whatever the reason, we just couldn’t break through. Tony delves into the three key components to creating a breakthrough: strategy, story and state. The way you approach a goal, your beliefs about your life, and your mental game form the foundation for any success or failure. But by learning how to take control of these forces, you can take massive action and can create the quality of life that you’ve always wanted. *CREDIT Tony Robbins Visit Tony Robbins' websites: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ http://www.unshakeable.com/ Follow Tony Robbins @: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TonyRobbins Twitter: https://twitter.com/tonyrobbins LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ajrobbins Google+: https://plus.google.com/+TonyRobbins Instagram: https://instagram.com/tonyrobbins/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/TonyRobbinsLive FAIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER * Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Django Unchained: Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago. Django and Schultz's search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of "Candyland," an infamous plantation. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave. -- (C) Weinstein The Cabin in the Woods: Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen. If you think you know this story, think again. From fan favorites Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard comes The Cabin in the Woods, a mind blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out. Silver Linings Playbook: Life doesn't always go according to plan. Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) has lost everything -- his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert DeNiro) after spending eight months is a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat's parents want is for him to get back on his feet-and to share their family's obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he'll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives. Seven Psychopaths: Marty (Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay, "Seven Psychopaths". Billy (Rockwell) is Marty's best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Hans (Walken) is Billy's partner in crime. A religious man with a violent past. Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathetic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie's unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn't think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale. Lincoln: Steven Spielberg directs Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President's tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come. Argo: Based on true events, Argo chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis-the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA "exfiltration" specialist named Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

chapter 17: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn. ~ Chapter 17, "'Or Does It Explode?'" (named after a line from Langston Hughes's poem "Harlem" from "Montage of a Dream Deferred", referred to as "Lenox Avenue Mural" by Zinn), covers the Civil Rights movement. Zinn argues that the government began making reforms against discrimination (although without making fundamental changes) for the sake of changing its international image, but often did not enforce the laws that it passed. Zinn also argues that while nonviolent tactics may have been required for Southern civil rights activists, militant actions (such as those proposed by Malcolm X) were needed to solve the problems of black ghettos. Also covered is the involvement of the Communist Party in the movement, the Congress of Racial Equality, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Freedom Riders, COINTELPRO, and the Black Panther Party.

Patricia Kelly, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Critical Studies at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada Measuring Here and There, or the Decentralization of American Art When influential art critic and curator Lucy Lippard staged 955,000 in Vancouver, BC in January 1970, she was acknowledging the international aspirations and interconnectivity of much American conceptual art. Participating artists such as Robert Smithson, Douglas Huebler, and Sol LeWitt, had, by this time, well established practices concerned with mapping and relationality. Lippard's push towards decentralization signaled a broader desire among contemporary artists and critics to increase opportunities for sustained intellectual and creative inquiry, to understand art practice from a global (rather than regional) perspective, and to expand networks of like-minded artists across national borders in often unexpected and creative ways. Using this exhibition as a point of departure, this paper will explore the circulation of artists between the US and the West Coast of Canada in the late 60s and early 70s, and its potentially destabilizing effect on American art history. Conversation with James Luna & Michael Hatt, Ph.D. Dr. Hatt is Professor in the History of Art at the University of Warwick, England Wang Dang Doodle Encounters, or Representing the Indian, Then and Now James Luna's practice has focused on cross-cultural, multicultural, and current cultural issues in contemporary American Indian society. He will present his most recent installation, which opened last month at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Luna will be joined by Michael Hatt to discuss his work in relation to art history, the representation of Native Americans in the past, and the ways in which that history is presented to the public. Deborah Butterfield Deborah Butterfield is a major American sculptor whose subject since the 1970s has been the horse. Butterfield earned an MFA from the University of California, Davis, and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, from such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts. In this presentation, Butterfield will overview much of her career, from her college works to her current studio practice. Derrick Cartwright, Ph.D. Director of University Galleries and Professor of Practice, Art History at the University of San Diego Proliferating Participation: American Art Displays in Eras of Crisis Contemporary American museum culture is fraught with challenges. In the face of weakening public support, institutions today claim that they seek audience engagement as a key to maintaining relevance and achieving sustainability. This talk explores the ways that "participation" has often been held up as a virtue by American art exhibitions past and present. From Robert Henri's 1915 exhibition of Modern American Painting at the Panama California Exposition to ambitious projects, like Behold, America!, the stakes of encouraging new participatory practices have at once evolved and grown more urgent across the United States. www.TheSanDiegoMuseumofArt.org Video produced by Balboa Park Online Collaborative

Children and youth are among the most vulnerable of society's citizens, with those in government care having a further series of risks. In Canada, our Aboriginal children and youth are among the most at risk. More Aboriginal children are in government care in comparison to other children. Fewer Aboriginal children graduate from high school than their non-Aboriginal counterparts. And, too many Aboriginal children live in poverty, become involved with the youth justice system and suffer from intergenerational impacts of residential schools. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond's goal is that all young people in British Columbia have the same opportunities for success. Her Big Thinking presentation will examine how Aboriginal children, youth and their families have become marginalized, and look at what can be done to ensure that this population @ the edge is heard and this inequality addressed. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond is President of the Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates, an alliance of provincial advocates from across the country who champion the voice and rights of children. She was appointed B.C.'s first Representative for Children and Youth in November 2006 and has worked as a criminal law judge in youth and adult courts, with an emphasis on developing partnerships to better serve the needs of young people in the justice system, particularly sexually exploited children and youth and those with disabilities.

Free News Sharing and On-Line Art Gallery http://www.ciactivist.org FEATURE: The 2016 Fire and Rain art project that began in early January was inspired by news stories on wildfires that burned throughout Western Canada in 2015. Paintings were displayed outdoors publicly throughout Edmonton and their stories shared on YouTube. I used art from the beginning to defend freedom of expression on the Alberta Legislature grounds when it was verbally banned 3 times by Legislature officials. Some of the YouTubes published shared how the wildfires and flooding that followed affected Albertans, their communities and the environment. I hope my art and the stories shared will inspire us to contemplate the calamities in Alberta of 2016 as a collective and together help each other find ways and better solutions to save our planet and our children's future. http://buddyhuggins.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-big-short-2015-is-must-see-movie.html The Big Short' is a winner. Right on the Money and on the Fraud Storyline Three separate but parallel stories of the U.S mortgage housing crisis of 2005 are told. Michael Burry, an eccentric ex-physician turned one-eyed Scion Capital hedge fund manager, has traded traditional office attire for shorts, bare feet and a Supercuts haircut. He believes that the US housing market is built on a bubble that will burst within the next few years. In Video Review - Author: jakob13 from United States 13 December 2015 'The Big Short' is a winner. Based on Michael Lewis book of the same title, it tells the sorry story of the fraud and deceit practiced on the American people, nay, on the world by Wall Streets finance capitalism. We know the culprits: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Lehman Bros., Morgan Stanley, Citibank, Wachovia, Credit Suisse, UBS and on and on who invented financial instruments such as CDO, credit swaps and other fancy unintelligible names, based on mortgages, with the connivance of the credit agencies--Dow Jone, Standard and Poor's and Fitch. 'The Big Short' with a light seriousness is a crash course on the duplicity of Wall Street investment bankers who earned large fees on junk bonds with triple A ratings; who bundled junk to palm off on an unsuspecting public looking for big gains by pandering to the snake oil elixir of getting rich quickly; and who feed on the naivety of the broad American have-nots with the dream of owning a home of their own. And so with some humor but much sadness are we lead through the byways of four different groups of bankers who saw the hoax for what it was and its impending implosion that would bring down the deck of cards of capitalism. And the took out bets on the market, by buying short. And they won big time! But the banks are still around, and the ratepayers footed the bailout, but at what cost! And we see this in the turmoil of the Republican party: for the discontent abroad in the US has thrown more than 25 percent of the population into poverty, loss of jobs, home, into heavy debt and no future for their children. And these banks have not reformed their ways...now they've come up with the same of gimmicks with a fancy name--something like beneficial financial tranche--as the play the same old mug's game. And like the Bourbons, t The cast is stellar--especially Christian Bale and Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling as well as the minor players. And like the Bourbons, in the words of Talleyrand, 'they learned nothing and forgot nothing', but the contempt they have for all of us. And to make the case stronger, the fools on the Supreme Court have strengthened the hands of big money and the oligopoly and the fat cats of Wall Street and the coupon clippers and the devil take the rest of us! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Road to the Ironman Triathlon - ONE MILE AT A TIME http://astore.amazon.com/road_to_the_ironman_triathlon-20 My Social Media links: https://plus.google.com/+BuddyHuggins/ https://www.youtube.com/user/iambuddyhuggins http://buddyhuggins.blogspot.com/ https://www.buddyhuggins.com https://www.facebook.com/buddyhuggins http://pinterest.com/buddyhuggins/pins/ Pinterest https://twitter.com/buddyhuggins Twitter http://www.tripadvisor.com/members/Buddyhuggins http://www.twitter.com/#!/buddyhuggins twitter.com/#!/buddyhuggins http://dyslexiathegift.blogspot.com/ Dyslexia A Gift Store https://plus.google.com/105870029002256719797 Google+ Running, Cycling, Swimming, Triathlon, Cross Training, Weight Training. In recent years, environmental justice scholarship has exploded. But virtually every relevant piece of work has understood the history of environmental justice as dating only to the late 20th century. This talk goes back to the 17th century, seeking to trace and analyze the evolution of a positive environmental rights discourse in European and American history. Having established our opposition to environmental injustice, we might want to ask: what exactly are we aiming for, in positive terms? What are the components of environmental justice? Is there any common ground left to stand on? And how might a deeper historical perspective help us answer these questions? Aaron Sachs (AB ’92) is Professor of History and American Studies at Cornell University, where he has taught since 2004. In 2006, he published The Humboldt Current: Nineteenth-Century Exploration and the Roots of American Environmentalism (Viking), which won Honorable Mention for the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, given to the best first book in the field of U.S. history by the Organization of American Historians (OAH). In 2013, he published Arcadian America: The Death and Life of an Environmental Tradition (Yale U. Press), which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction. Sachs has also published articles in such journals as Environmental History, Rethinking History, American Quarterly, and History and Theory. In his graduate teaching, he works with students not only in History but also in English, Science and Technology Studies, History of Architecture, City and Regional Planning, Anthropology, and Natural Resources. At Cornell, Sachs is the faculty sponsor of a radical underground organization called Historians Are Writers, which brings together graduate students who believe that academic writing can be moving on a deeply human level. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Cornell Roundtable on Environmental Studies Topics (CREST). Sachs is currently at work on book projects focusing on environmental modernity; environmental justice; and environmental humor.
