The idea of Hanging Gardens is as old as cities. There is a growing interest in the application of vertical gardens in the landscape arena as land becomes more valuable and house sections become smaller. Hanging Gardens is leading the way in NZ. Hanging Gardens offers an exciting range of environmentally friendly products, which allow the home owner to increase the amount of gardening space, turn ugly fences or balconies into beautiful living walls and create corridors of vegetation. Hanging Gardens are botanically superior to the vast majority of other products as they have interchangeable inner felt pockets. This unique feature helps with water retention and allows the plants to be sustainable over the long term. It also makes for easy maintenance and plant care, keeping the garden looking good throughout the year. If you would like to know about us please visit our website at: http/www.hanginggardens.co.nz

The tall, red sandstone columns of the Australian War Memorial, grouped and interspersed with red flowering eucalyptus trees, immediately calls to mind the red continent of our neighbour, while use of basalt represents New Zealand’s landform. Polished black basalt panels inserted within the columns reflect the sky and bring an ephemeral quality to the strongly rooted columns. Indigenous art engravings on the polished surfaces blends the essence of both countries with the many shared theatres of war that are engraved on the stone surfaces in a more traditional, commemorative manner. The location of the Memorial within the new Pukeahu Park, on the central axis with the Carillion and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, reinforces the central ceremonial space of the park. The 6 m tall columns respond to the Carillion tower, faced across the parade ground, providing a boundary to the plaza. The gum trees will shelter the area when grown, their lightness contrasting with the denser pohutukawa supporting the Carillion. This is an inspiring and emotionally telling piece of landscape design which both commemorates and celebrates the close relationship of these two ANZAC neighbours. Its beauty and strength are in its simplicity, while multiple messages are included for those who tarry in the shade of the trees. Its presence will resonate for generations to come.
When you are building new or renovating your existing property, there are a number of things that need to be considered ... one of why would be "when do I need to begin thinking about landscaping? Garden design (also known as garden landscaping) is something that should be considered at the beginning of both of these stages. Just like how you'd organise a building contractor at the beginning of the new building process, you'd need to organise a garden designer as well. There are a number of reasons for this, the general one being that this allows the architect and the garden designer to work together to arrange a property that best suits the clients needs. Talk to your garden designer today to arrange an onsite consultation. Visit http://www.gardensbydesign.co.nz/ to arrange a consultation with an experienced landscape designer today!

Fancy a picnic in Cathedral Square? On a lawn, by a stream, near wetlands with native vegetation and birdlife? Pack the thermos, that could be a future family outing if Regenerate Christchurch gets the green light for its Square revamp. Its draft proposal, released publically today, divides Cathedral Square into three inter-connecting places - Cathedral Gardens, the Library Plaza, and Post Office Place - each with its own unique flavour. There’s a nod to the history of the city’s most identifiable space, with the re-introduction of water. “We’re going to use water as a metaphor and as a narrative that weaves right through the space and round behind the Cathedral and out to the library,” says James Lunday, General Manager of Strategy and Regeneration Planning, and a key architect of the new plan. Lunday, a genial Scotsman who’s been working in Christchurch for 20 years, says many of the ideas put forward were generated by residents via Share an Idea, market research and consultation with an 18-member public focus group. The draft proposal shows a restored Cathedral, but Lunday is keen to stress it’s there “for the purpose of this exercise”. To the south of the Cathedral, bordered by the Millennium Hotel and the future Spark site, there are plans for a large green space - Cathedral Gardens. “There’ll be a lawn here for people to come for picnics, for children to play, the water will be a feature that they can enjoy and that water will have native landscape and wetlands with it,” says Lunday. The current diversion of Colombo Street around the Cathedral will be removed and the street re-aligned to run as it originally did, past the Cathedral itself, with traffic limited to trams and vehicles visiting the area. The new city library, currently under construction, gets its own Plaza, with a focus on attracting young people to the area and could be a “skateboard friendly” zone. With the Cenotaph also in the Plaza, the area will be able to host remembrance services. New buildings encroaching onto the public square are a significant addition. Lunday’s aware they could be a much-debated aspect of the new design. “Building in the square is controversial, I acknowledge that. If we build on public land we control what uses go in it. We’re suggesting that we create buildings here that have the ability to take cultural, arts, academic uses into them and bring activity to the events square during the day and night.” The purpose-built events square would be known as Post Office Place. Lunday says “this is the fiesta square - let’s get a bit of South American and Spanish in us and have fun.” From fun to funding - who would pay for this grand scheme and how much would it cost to deliver? There are no firm answers at this stage. Regenerate Christchurch’s Chief Executive, Ivan Iafeta, says a business case has yet to be developed. “Once we understand what people want to see in the centre of the city, then we’ll develop the business case that identifies the funding that will be required and those potential funding streams.” The public is now being asked to provide feedback to engage.regeneratechristchurch.nz Join James Lunday on a tour of the draft concept with Christchurch Dilemmas. www.chchdilemmas.co.nz

The Wellington Botanic Garden features 25 hectares of unique landscape, protected native forest, conifers, specialised plant collections, colourful floral displays, and views over Wellington city. It is classified as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and is an Historic Places Trust Heritage Area. In 1844, the New Zealand Company set aside a 5.26 hectare strip of land for a Botanic Garden reserve. At that time the land was covered in dense podocarp forest including rimu, totara and matai. The Garden was established in 1868 and managed by the New Zealand Institute. Trees growing today on Druid Hill and Magpie Spur grew from seedlings planted at this time, and are some of the oldest exotic trees in New Zealand. In the 1870s the fledgling garden was boosted with a further 21.85 hectares of reserve. Wellington City Council has managed the Botanic Garden since 1891.
