Li'l Larikkins - Preparing for an Emergency
Students explore the importance of having a box or bag prepared with items of significant or emotional value in the case of a bushfire threat. This box doesn’t need to contain emergency items (like the emergency kit) but rather items such as photos, important documents or anything of significant personal value that wouldn’t be safe in the home. This lesson is an opportunity to discuss the home bush fire survival plan and the importance of leaving early. Dr. Frank Field, a retired WCBS weather and science reporter, wants kids to know what it really looks like in a fire so he produced a video series called "Fire is Black." The series is being offered for free to schools across New Jersey. Leading w/ Liberty: Lessons in Self-Organization from the Fire Ground | Tim Moen | TEDxFortMcMurray
While working on his graduate thesis and studying teams of self-organized fire fighters, Tim uncovered some powerful insights about leadership that he has applied to his life with amazing results. In his TEDx talk, Tim shows us how he pioneered uncharted territory in his own organizational life by letting go of the illusion of command and control, and embracing the reality of a bottom-up universe. Tim is a Fire Captain with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. When he is not working as a firefighter/paramedic, he is engaging in many activities; filmmaking, serial entrepreneurship, blog writing for the Huffington Post, being a human rights activist and, most recently, leading a Canadian federal political party. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

If an office makes fire extinguishers available for employee use, employees need to educate employees on the principles and practices of using a fire extinguisher and the hazards associated with fighting small or developing fires. Office workers who have been designated to use fire extinguishers as part of the emergency action plan, must be trained on how to use the fire extinguishers appropriately in the workplace. Fire Stories - a lesson in time
Want to learn more about the film, check out the website behind the movie. www.fire.bmwhi.org.au This film captures the human stories surrounding the devastating 1957 bush fires which tore through Leura and Wentworth Falls in the summer of 1957-58. The film documents the fire and its toll by tracing the stories behind an ill-prepared yet heroic community who faced these fires and then coped with the tragic aftermath. The lessons from 55 years ago will help us to better prepare the Blue Mountains community to deal with fire in 2013.

Church Staff and First Responders Get Lesson on Safety and Security at Seminar
July 31. 2016 NORTH CHARLESTON - (WCSC) - The Christian Security Network reports 75 percent of churches do not have a safety and security plan. A safety conference is working to change that worldwide. Threat Suppression, Incorporated is teaching people how to make their place of worship more secure. Church staff across the area came together for the seminar at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Keith Hale is the Family Life Center director at the church. "Everybody believes you know entrust in God and he'll protect us, however he also said be wise," Hale said. Threat Suppression, Incorporated hosted two Active Shooter Seminars. One for first responders and another for church staff. Dr. Mike Clumpner is the CEO of the company and he teaches about 40,000 thousand people on safety worldwide. "I'm not here to spread a message of fear, it's a message of preparation and resilience," Dr. Clumpner said. He presents incidents that could arise in churches like robberies, personal conflicts, and gang-related crimes. It's important for church leaders to know about recent church crimes. "So watch the news, just do Google searches of church crimes an see what's happening and see if your church is prepared to counteract one of those crimes," Clumpner said. Locking side doors during services, having a high visibility of church staff and installing cameras both hidden and visible are just a few safety precautions. Clumpner also recommends having law enforcement officers at service and inventory of equipment. "If someone stole a laptop from your church or a TV from your church, how long would it take you to even recognize that," Clumpner said. Many church staff at the seminar see an opportunity where they can improve their current safety plans. "I do feel like after what happened downtown with the Emanuel 9 it was an eye opener and a lot of churches now looking into effective strategies," Hale said. Safety Team member at NewSpring Church, Jeremy Buchanan says it was informative to hear about the liabilities of the church in ensuring safety on mission trips or with kid camps. "It's really nice to see we have programs like this available to help in today's society to make sure we can go to church and be safe," Buchanan said. The event was hosted by the Mount Pleasant and North Charleston Fire Departments.

PSYCH 101 - Lesson 2 - Hand on the Fire
Average people are like hamsters, unable to maintain control over their fleeting emotions for long enough to accomplish anything of significance. To continue to invest work in a venture before you see the results is very hard, it's like fighting the urge to retract your hand from a fire. This ability must be developed gradually. This lesson teaches how to conceptualize this "volition/execution horizon" and how to go about extending it.
Li'l Larikkins - What's a spot fire?
The ‘What is a spot fire?’ safety message explores the issues of spot fires being created by flying embers and sparks. Spot fires can cause major damage to properties. 7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters
How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places. Dedication of Fire Safety House
In December 2009, the Friends of Safety City board donated the 2,000 square-foot building to the City of Abilene. The board raised approximately $160,000 for the Fire Safety Houses construction. The Fire Safety House replaces an 8 foot by 30 foot Fire Safety Trailer which served as a teaching classroom, only accommodating 20 students at a time. The new facility is modeled after the former #2 Fire Station on South 5th and Butternut Streets. It features an engine room, a classroom with bleacher style seating for up to 60 students; a room that has a realistic kitchen where kitchen safety will be taught; and a bedroom setting where students will learn survival tactics to utilize in case of a house fire.
