Kevin & Sully sat down with Vigilant Fire Training CEO Todd Smith. Todd is a seasoned Lieutenant with over 25 years of experience in the fire service. He created his company to give firefighters and fire departments an option when it comes to creating a custom training outline for fire departments. These training outlines relieve some of the stress that comes with creating, implementing and documenting training. Todd says, "Our primary goal at Vigilant is to provide your agency training officer with the necessary tools to produce firefighters who are trained to mitigate any given emergency in an effective, efficient and safe manner." Vigilant Fire Training Mission - At Vigilant we understand the hard work and the dedication it requires to create and maintain a great fire service training program. We also understand that today's environment requires more time and effort of the training officer than ever before. We understand, because this is exactly what our staff has done for the past 20 plus years. Our goal at Vigilant is to allow the training officer to focus on the delivery of training, rather than focusing their time and effort trying to meet ever changing requirements. We truly want every fire department in the nation to have a successful training program that creates a learning environment that is both enthusiastic and exciting. In our eyes a great training program is one that sparks passion, self motivates and creates an atmosphere where one is eager to learn and committed to continuing education. We understand that a great training program does not happen by accident. It requires hours of research, planning and development long before the execution process can take place. Furthermore, great training programs need to be based on proven methodology, strong curriculum and a principled evaluation process. Developing training programs of this caliber can be a daunting, time consuming task. Vigilant has the solution for your training needs. We have the tools and the knowledge necessary to build and create a successful training program. From complete custom training programs and annual training plans to individual lesson plans and presentations we have you covered. We pride ourselves on having the most up to date and current knowledge in fire service training. We are constantly developing new products and services to better serve you and your department. Presenter(s): Bdale Garbee URL: https://lca2014.linux.org.au/schedule/30055/view_talk The Black Forest Fire started on 11 June 2013 in Colorado, US, and quickly set a record for the most homes destroyed by a single forest fire in state history... 511 homes were completely destroyed, including Bdale's. Thanks to careful disaster recovery planning driven both by Bdale's history in the IT industry, and by the proximity of the Waldo Canyon fire less than a year prior, it was only a few days before the return of gag.com and related sites to the Internet began. But not everything went according to plan... This talk will review the plans made and state of gag.com resources at the time of the fire, what went right and wrong during mandatory evacuation, and how we put things back together after the abrupt and dramatic change in lifestyle mandated by the move to an apartment. http://lca2014.linux.org.au - http://www.linux.org.au CC BY-SA - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode.txt

Youngsters in Leicester were educated on fire safety yesterday with the help of furry mascot Lester Lion. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service visited Sparkenhoe Primary School to teach the pupils about the importance of fire safety, and how to spot fire risks in the home. This is part of a revamp in primary school educational resources across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, after the Fire Service received funding from the Electrical Safety Council. The Service hopes that the combination of fun with education will lead to memorable workshops that could potentially save lives. Helen Sutcliffe, the education manager with the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service commented that "We believe that by catching the children young, then it's a whole generation educated". As well as the sessions with Lester Lion, the children had the chance to become Junior Fire Safety Inspectors -- they were encouraged to discuss fire safety with their families, using a checklist they took home. By bringing the completed checklist back to school their names will be entered into a draw to win a Kindle Fire. The children behaved impeccably and really enjoyed the day's activities, and Assistant Head teacher Dan Cheetham said "They've learnt a lot from it".

Students explore the importance of having a box or bag prepared with items of significant or emotional value in the case of a bushfire threat. This box doesn’t need to contain emergency items (like the emergency kit) but rather items such as photos, important documents or anything of significant personal value that wouldn’t be safe in the home. This lesson is an opportunity to discuss the home bush fire survival plan and the importance of leaving early. In December 2009, the Friends of Safety City board donated the 2,000 square-foot building to the City of Abilene. The board raised approximately $160,000 for the Fire Safety Houses construction. The Fire Safety House replaces an 8 foot by 30 foot Fire Safety Trailer which served as a teaching classroom, only accommodating 20 students at a time. The new facility is modeled after the former #2 Fire Station on South 5th and Butternut Streets. It features an engine room, a classroom with bleacher style seating for up to 60 students; a room that has a realistic kitchen where kitchen safety will be taught; and a bedroom setting where students will learn survival tactics to utilize in case of a house fire.

October 20, 1991 - A brush fire ignites in the hills above Oakland, California. Winds spread the blaze and nearby homes are engulfed. The fire spreads further, crossing highways, engulfing homes and entire neighborhoods. Firefighters eventually control the inferno, and but not before over 3,000 homes are destroyed and 25 people killed. Do you know how to protect yourself from wildfires? Protect your home: Clear brush away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping and construction measures. Have emergency supplies in a safe place. Plan your family’s escape route. If you see a wildfire: Get away quickly, then call 911. Don’t approach it! Wildfires spread quickly and can change direction. Remove yourself from danger first, and then seek help. Wildfire smoke is a health risk (dust masks don’t help). It can: Sting your eyes. Irritate your respiratory system. Worsen chronic heart disease.
