We will discuss first the effect of vitamin D supplementation on asthma and recurrent wheeze outcomes in the 3-year old offspring. We will then discuss our findings of the effect of vitamin D on the occurrence of pre-eclampsia, including results of the gene expression analysis in a subset of the participants. These results will highlight the importance of adequate vitamin D status in pregnancy and in the prenatal programming of childhood outcomes.

I went to the doctor last week to test my vitamin d levels, and I am at 38.3! This is there first test I have done in a year and a half. I am going to continue supplementing with about 20,000 iu/week My menstrual cycle has still been irregular although I have been able to menstruate since I started increasing my vitamin d levels. Acupuncture 100% helps my body to get my period because when I go to acupuncture for that reason, I get my period like a week after. But back to my period irregularity – I am at risk for unexpected pregnancy because of not knowing when I am ovulating. My gyn recommended that I take a prenatal vitamin because when we conceive and later find out that we are pregnant, the fetus is already developing the neural tube so we want to have the nutrients available before that point. Calcium is necessary for development of baby’s bones and teeth. Calcium also for healthy heart, muscles, normal heart activity and blood clotting ability. Intake of Calcium reduces the risk of hypertension, pre ecclampsia, low birth weight babies. If you do not take enough calcium, the baby will draw enough calcium from the bones causing you osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Therefor 1 gram of calcium per day is necessary. Calcium is available as calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium oratate ,along with added Vitamin D3. When you are buying calcium, it is to be done under a doctor’s supervision. Note the company from which you are buying calcium, what is its composition what components are there in it. Do not take calcium, if they contain bone meat, dolomite, oyster calcium as it can be contaminated with lead. Another point to be noted, intake of too much calcium can also cause renal stones, constipation, acidity and also can hinder the iron absorption and the zinc absorption. Therefore calcium has to be taken in pregnancy under doctor’s supervision.
