There are metabolic pathways that are dysregulated in cancer, like the mTOR pathway. 19:26 The ketogenic diet is a systems approach. 20:24 Limiting protein is essential to a successful ketogenic diet for cancer. If protein is not limited, mTOR is stimulated throughout the system. With cancer treatment, keep mTOR upregulation specific to muscle tissue. 24:28 There is room for eating seasonal fruit, berries and vegetables on the ketogenic diet. 25:30 Miriam has seen the worst cancer outcomes in people who eat 10 to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. 28:51 There is more thermogenesis when you burn fat. 30:54 1.0 grams per kilogram of body weight is sufficient protein. 32:48 Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need to work with a specialist if they are doing a ketogenic diet for any reason. 36:30 High fat diet studies do not use ketogenic diets. 43:43 There is a short comment period for the government dietary guidelines that ends that the end of March. Comment! 44:54 The brain needs the energy equivalent of 130 grams of sugar, not 130 grams of carbohydrates. Sixty to 70 percent of this need can be met with ketones. Our bodies make the needed glucose. 46:50 A modified Atkins or a more liberalized ketogenic diet, is about 12 milligrams per deciliter higher in glucose on the average, which may mean the difference between a tumor growing or not growing. 47:21 Cancer robs glutamine from its neighbors. 49:45 Press Pulse Therapy is being researched for management of glutamine. 52:42 Keto is not the cure for cancer. It is an adjunct therapy. 53:06 In brain cancer, the results of ketogenic diet therapy is dramatic and people live many years past the initial prognosis. 54:36 You change the terrain to be inhospitable to cancer growth. It is not just about doing the ketogenic diet, but changing the lifestyle. 56:53 The ketogenic diet brought Miriam and her husband 6 ½ years of good quality of life time with their son before he died. 58:28 There may be cancers that do not respond to the ketogenic diet. 01:00:38 Drug therapies cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. 01:03:33 Fasting helps with housekeeping, clearing out dead cells. 01:05:01 In a case study in Egypt of glioblastoma multiforme and Keto 01:07:23 Temozolomide (Temodar) may give methylating patients 2 ½ months. 01:15:00 A Diet Skeptics and Saboteur presentation is on Miriam’s website. 01:15:58 A ketogenic diet has potential for improving quality of ageing. 01:22:18 Strong abs or a daily walk makes for less constipation. 01:25:22 How you sit on the toilet makes a difference in defecation. 01:26:25 The advised morning routine for someone with cancer. 01:33:28 Miriam’s favorite herbs or nutrients 01:35:04 Miriam’s elevator pitch

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’m making a few videos that are breast related during the month of October. This week, I thought I’d start with a personal story that I’ve never shared in detail before. About 15 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. I was 14 at the time and from that point on, my life was never the same. Breast cancer is a disease that not only affects the person who is diagnosed, but all the people around them as well. Growing up with a sick parent is incredibly painful, confusing, complex and isolating. For so many years it felt like I was alone in my story, but now I know that I’m not. Finding the path to healing is possible and as someone who has been on this path for half of my existence, I can tell you that true healing reveals the most vibrant colors this life has to offer. A note about this video: This is intentionally focused on my story and I've only incorporated elements of my mom's experience when the details were necessary. I believe that our stories are ours to tell and we should honor that for others as well. I’m in the process of slowly decorating and putting my place together. I’ll be sharing updates in real-time on Instagram, so make sure you’re following me if you’d like to see everything! http://www.instagram.com/ingridnilsen WEEKLY UPDATE: The thing that’s top of mind for me right now: this video is incredibly scary for me to publish. My heart is racing as I type this, but my soul knows *this* is what I’m meant to be making right now. As a creative, that’s probably the most enriching and invigorating combination I could ask for. ❤️ ---------- OTHER PLACES TO FIND ME: Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ingridnilsen Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/ingridnilsen Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/heyingridnilsen ---------- MISSED MY LAST VIDEO? Watch more Cancer & Disease Prevention videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/395408-How-to-Cope-with-a-Family-Members-Cancer-Diagnosis Learning that a loved one has cancer is devastating. But it's important that you remain strong so you can support them through their treatment. Step 1: Keep things simple Keep your reaction simple: tell them you love them and that you'll help them through this. Don't admonish them to "stay positive" or patronize them by downplaying a dire prognosis. Step 2: Expect changes Be prepared for personality changes: Many cancer patients go through periods of anger and withdrawal, and experience mood swings. Try not to take it personally if they lash out at you Step 3: Do some research Research their illness so you have a better understanding of what to expect. Encourage them to take a holistic approach to their healing by eating a healthy diet, learning ways to manage their stress, and doing whatever exercise they can manage -- in addition to their medical treatment. Tip One study showed that chemotherapy patients who combined resistance training and aerobics with relaxation techniques were likely to have less fatigue and feel better in general. Step 4: Talk about it Look for a balance between avoiding reality and dwelling on the diagnosis. Don't be afraid to tell the cancer sufferer what you're feeling, and encourage them to do the same. One study found that cancer patients and family members who bottled things up in an attempt to spare each other's feelings ended up feeling isolated. Step 5: Keep things as normal as possible Try to stick to established family routines as much as possible. A study of families living with a cancer diagnosis found that maintaining routines helped families cope with the situation. Step 6: Take care of yourself Take care of yourself, especially if you are the primary caregiver. Stay connected with your friends, get loved ones to pitch in so you get regular breaks, and eat well. Consider individual counseling, joining a support group, or seeking solace in your faith community. The best way you can help your family member is to keep yourself mentally and physically sound. Did You Know? Cancer patients who received massages from family members experienced a reduction in their stress, pain, fatigue, depression, and nausea.

A common default emotion for both patients and their loved ones is to stay positive throughout cancer treatment. It's a comforting survival tactic to get through one of the most difficult times in a person's life. Though there's no scientific evidence to support that a good attitude can help a patient fight the disease, keeping a healthy emotional well-being couldn't hurt. It's definitely better than letting negative feelings result in depression, which can make recovery from cancer much harder, reports a new study published in the journal PLOS ONE in May. But of course, being upbeat when you're consumed with fear and uncertainty is easier said than done. Meditation can help disempower some of these scary, unproductive thoughts as you fight for your life. Seeing a destructive thinking process for what is—a stream of thoughts, not facts—can stop them from weighing you down or holding you back. Hypnosis and cognitive behavioral therapy are two other mental techniques that work in a similar way—though they're less about taming intrusive thoughts and more about restructuring them. All three strategies are particularly helpful for cancer patients who may need to reframe their outlook before going into chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. “Not only are these strategies helping them deal with a very big problem in the moment, but also once they've learned them, they can [use these techniques] on their own in the future,” says Guy Montgomery, director of Psychological Services at Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center in New York City. In this video interview with Sonima.com founder, Sonia Jones, Montgomery further explains how each mental plan of action works, especially in the face of cancer.

Eight months after undergoing a successful surgery for colon cancer, Delaware resident Thelma Klase, was diagnosed with a large cancerous tumor in her liver, thought to be metastatic colon cancer. After an initial attempt at surgery failed and months of chemotherapy targeting her presumed colon cancer, Thelma and her family sought a second opinion from Matthew Weiss, a liver surgeon and surgical director of the Johns Hopkins Liver and Pancreatic Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinics. Dr. Weiss reassured his new patient that another approach offered good odds for success. He used a portal vein embolization procedure to grow the portion of her liver that was to remain. Then he removed the tumor, which turned out not to be metastatic colon cancer, but a completely different liver cancer. The surgery was successful, allowing Thelma a new lease on life. Sugar causes cancer - Sugar Doesn’t Just Feed Cancer Cells, It Produces Them !! Sugar cancer link. Sugar has been related to a multitude of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, immobility, elevated triglycerides and high blood pressure. High refined sugar intake has always had a strong correlation to tumor development in cancer patients, but now there is evidence that suggests that a high sugar diet can actually cause cancer. Cancer cells uptake sugar at 10-12 times the rate of healthy cells. The 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, German Otto Warburg developed a hypothesis that, cancer cells have a different energy metabolism compared to healthy cells. According to Otto Warburg, malignant tumors exhibit increased glycolysis, in contrast to healthy human cells. The 2013-2014 Journal of Clinic Investigation released the results of an in-vitro study, that analyzed the results of increased sugar uptake and oncogenesis (cancer creation). The results demonstrated that, increased glucose uptake had a direct and positive correlation to the early phases of cancer cell production. Moreover, a 1985 study on sugar and the risk of large bowel cancer found that, patients with high intakes of sugar were more predisposed to the development of cancer, than patients with lower intakes of sugar. The study takes into account the difference between refined sugar and naturally occurring sugars. Refined sugars include table sugar and high fructose corn syrup, that are absorbed by the body when consuming processed foods, sodas, and baked desserts. Naturally occurring sugars in fruits are deemed less harmful, regardless of their glycemic index.

In this video, I'll show you how to lose weight in a week. The tips you're about to hear are so effective that your body will have no other choice but to discard the extra ounces of fat it has been holding on to "in case of an emergency". And the best part is, this advice is not only harmless but it will actually help you improve your health. Let's get right down to it... How can you lose weight in a week? First things first. It's very likely you are currently retaining 4 pounds or more of water weight -- you need to get rid of this extra weight. To do it, you need to know what the deal with this unwanted weight is. When your body is not supplied with the amount of water it needs, it goes into "alert mode" and starts accumulating more and more water. In other words, the body goes back to working like it did thousands of years ago, when water was scarce. Back then, extra water weight helped people survive the rough conditions; today, it just makes people feel fat and with swollen bellies. To fight a bloated stomach, you need to trick your body into making it believe there's plenty of water available, and that there's no need to carry the extra water weight. The simplest way of achieving this it to drink lots of water all the time. Once you start, you'll body will realize it doesn't need the stored water any longer, and will trigger a signal to release it from the body. The elimination process will happen pretty quickly. If you drink more than 3 liters of water per day -4 or 5 if you weight more than 175 pounds-- you can lose 4 ½ pounds of water weight in 3-4 days. An extra benefit is that drinking a lot of water speeds up the metabolism, making it burn more calories and fat. Listen, I know that the prospect of drinking a lot of water is not very exciting, but it really works, so do it. To wrap up the water subject, prepare yourself to go to the bathroom more often. The increase will be a sign that you're on the right path towards eliminating retained water weight. Are you still following? Glad to hear you are! The next thing you need to know about are the 6-9 pounds of decomposing matter and feces that you are carrying at the moment, and that are hindering your body from working correctly. In fact, as from 26 pounds of overweight, the amount is probably even more. Carrying accumulated human waste in the intestines not only affects your overweight, it can also lead to hemorrhoids, harmful colon bacteria, sudden mood swings, fatigue, sleep disorders, etc. Think about it, it's very important that you understand that you do not want to carry undigested waste in your body. So, how can you fix this problem? It's simple: with a big fiber intake of at least 1 ½ oz. a day. I recommend beans, black beans, apples, and bananas. A can of black beans a day provides 25 grams of fiber; combine it with 3 bananas or apples to add 15 more grams to your daily intake. Fiber will help you eliminate accumulated waste, but it may take a while because, in most cases, the long years of eating junk food and other empty carbohydrates has made this decomposed matter settle in your system. As soon as you consistently incorporate 40 grams of fiber a day, or more, the settled waste will begin to loosen up be expelled from your system. Your metabolism will speed up even more as a result, enabling your body to burn fat more easily. Some truly powerful extra pieces of advice to lose weight in just a week: • Eliminate all beverages from your diet except for water, including sodas, energy drinks, juice, etc. These drinks are packed with calories and preservatives that make it more difficult to achieve weight loss. • Eliminate white flour and sugary foods, such as bread, pasta, cake, candy bars, etc. • Reduce your serving sizes, and eat 5-6 regular-sized meals a day. • Add boiled eggs, chicken breast and lots of fruit and vegetables into your diet. Follow these tips to lose weight in a week easily, and change your metabolism without doing anything crazy. This is all for now; if you wish to receive mo

http://www.healthy-today.net/diseases-and-conditions/cancer/how-to-support-someone-with-cancer/ -- A comprehensive guide on cancer support for families. What can you do to help the one you love fight his or her cancer diagnosis? This guide is aimed at caregivers, family and friends who want to know how to best support your loved one. If getting diagnosed with cancer is the worst possible news a person could get, the second worst news has to be that someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer. While the disease is of course hardest on the actual patient, family and friends are in for a rough ride to. Particularly the caregivers will need a lot of information and cancer support in order to be able to help their loved one - and to cope with the related grief and stress themselves. The very first thing to do is to let the patient know that you will be there for them, that you will help him or her in whatever way you can. Don't be afraid to talk about your feelings either. Don't let the cancer patient feel like he is the elephant in the room. While you definitely want to be "a rock" for the cancer patient you shouldn't feel that you have to solve every problem yourself. You have to accept the fact that you are going to need help too, and that it is okay to ask others for assistance. A support network of several persons, each contributing with whatever they can, is always a great idea. Because after all, who will care for the cancer patient if you are overwhelmed and stressed out? A big part of becoming a great cancer caregiver and/or support person is also to find out as much as you can about the disease. What type of cancer are you dealing with and in what stage? What types of treatment are available? Will your insurance cover the needed therapy? And so on. It is quite daunting to deal with cancer. But you must remember to have fun. Having a loved one diagnosed with cancer does not mean that you must change how you choose to live your life completely. Keep doing the things that give you pleasure, such as reading, seeing movies at the theater, and attending your favorite sporting events. You may need to plan a little more carefully to ensure that these events do not take an unnecessary toll on you, but not enough to where you are not enjoying yourself. cancer support cancer caregiver support cancer support for families cancer and families cancer families cancers effects on family families struggling with cancer cancer what now support and care to patients psychological help for families of people with cancer caring for a cancer patient caring for cancer caring for cancer patients caring for chemo patient Make no mistake though, no matter your situation cancer is difficult to manage. New Delhi, Nov 28 (ANI): Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. There are two major types of lung cancers, Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). Knowing which type you have is important because it affects your treatment options and your outlook. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted treatments and immunotherapy alone or in combination are used to treat lung cancer patients. Use of individual treatment options would be based on the stage of cancer and symptoms. Surgery: Most stage 1 and stage 2 lung cancer patients are treated with surgery to remove the tumor if the patient is very fit. As most of the lung cancer patients are not very fit and suffer from poor lung and heart condition, up to 10% of patients only can undergo curative lung surgery. Radiation: Patients with early lung cancer, but not suitable for surgery (stage 1& 2), or advanced lung cancer (stage 3) are treated with radiation with the intention to cure. Sometimes both radiation and chemotherapy given together. Chemotherapy: For most advanced cancer patient chemotherapy is used to control the tumor growth. Chemotherapy generally has some side effects and is only given to fit patients. In some situations, chemotherapy is used after surgery to improve the cure rate. Targeted therapy: One of the most exciting developments in oncology field, many of these medicines are oral tablets which can be taken at home with minimum supervision. These medicines tend to have fewer side effects as compared to chemotherapy. Immunotherapy: This has recently emerged as a new treatment option. This class of drug seems to have even less side effects. Immune check point inhibitors (PD-L1) targeted drugs have already shown a promising role, and are likely to emerge as main therapy for lung cancers in future. Newer treatment options particularly targeted therapy and immunotherapy have changed the treatment paradigm in lung cancer and hold great promise. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ☛ Subscribe to our Youtube Channel - https://goo.gl/k1Aee1 ☛ Visit our Official website: https://www.aninews.in/ Enjoy and stay connected with us!! ☛ Like us: https://www.facebook.com/ANINEWS.IN ☛Follow us : https://twitter.com/ANI ☛ Circle us : https://goo.gl/QN5kXy ☛ Contact us : email@example.com

Many people wish to prevent pancreatic cancer, it is a type of cancer that is not usually young and adult, but as a preventive system we must understand the systems that help not have pancreatic cancer. It should be borne in mind that cancer is directly linked to toxins, or free radicals acting in some place in the body. So the better the body works, and the fewer harmful actions it takes on the body, the more likely it is that you will not get cancer. Therefore, it is important to seek a complete healthy life, not to try specific methods of care. In the case of pancreas, deleterious factors are mainly related to alcohol, alcohol consumption tends to harm the pancreas and liver, another related factor is the amount of fat and its metabolism. In the case the major factor is alcohol that is also linked to liver cancer. But remember, the goal is not to have cancer anywhere, not just to prevent pancreatic cancer. So a non-sedentary life and healthy eating. They involve the best rules for not only the pancreas but for every body to be healthy. But what about the minimum amount of alcohol you can drink so you do not have the risk of pancreatic cancer? The answer is the minimum amount that can be taken of alcohol, the lesser possible it is better in the biological scope. Now, ethyl alcohol is not food, so it is not necessary for the body. No one has health problems because they stop drinking ethyl alcohol, so the minimum amount of alcohol for the better body is nothing. Well, what's the biggest chance a person gets drunk? A person who does not drink or a person who drinks? The answer is simple. Therefore, people do not need ethyl alcohol. Alcohol is a custom created in an irrational way, because if something causes problems or makes itself at risk of problems, what is the use? After all ... for nothing. Remember health is for the whole body and not for specific parts.

Psychology major Branden Abushanab and Professor Anthony Bishara conducted a study to determine if the order of practicing music impacts retention. They considered two practice orders: fixed-order in which a person practices a particular task before switching to the next task and random-order in which a person randomly alternates two or more tasks. The purpose of this project was to determine whether fixed-order or random-order practice leads to better memory retention for piano playing and whether or not participants' judgment of learning during acquisition accurately predicts their retention 2 days later. More than 30 teams of College of Charleston students and faculty mentors conducted research this past summer as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) grant program. Teams investigated everything from pollution effects on the Lowcountry ecosystem to the revitalization of arts and finding an anti-cancer agent for prostate cancer. Every summer, the College awards up to $6,500 to SURF grant recipients, and the student is expected to work 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. The culmination of the research is participation in the college-wide "Celebration of Summer Engagement", which will is held annually in August. They are also required to submit a written project summary for public dissemination and are encouraged to submit results to regional, national and international publications.

While not as prevalent as other cancer diseases, every day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. Children’s cancer affects all ethnic, gender and socio-economic groups and more than 40,000 children undergo treatment for cancer each year. 12% of children diagnosed with cancer do not survive, while 60% of children who do survive cancer suffer effects in later life, such as infertility, heart failure and secondary cancers. Recurrence rates and secondary complications also occur with pediatric cancer patients - with no current clinically accepted route of testing for these complications, we’ve set out with institutes in Southeast Asia and Taiwan in hopes of identifying fusion gene and microRNA expression biomarkers that can indicate the patient’s risk of recurrence or risk of secondary complications for early intervention and better treatment selection. Through QuarkBio's PanelChip™ Analysis System, we hope that our joint research project can contribute to the ongoing clinical research for pediatric cancer and one day bring better healthcare tools to pediatric cancer patients.

Patience. That's Dixie Frantz's main advice for anyone undergoing cancer treatment. Dixie's husband Rick was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer. There was a large tumor on his left kidney and smaller tumors in both lungs, liver, chest area and several areas in the bone. Rick received his treatment at MD Anderson, including a promising immunotherapy clinical trial. Through all the treatments, Dixie had to remind herself to be patient. Appointments, blood work, therapy...it all takes time, so you must have faith in the doctors and the staff that they have your best interest at heart. It's been an unlikely road for 49-year-old powerlifter Lisa Johnson. After lifting for less than a year, Johnson was able compete in and win five trophies at a powerlifting competition in Wisconsin. The Minneapolis paralegal said she first started getting serious about powerlifting last year, not long after she beat breast cancer. "I had a double mastectomy, 15 lymph nodes removed because the cancer was spreading."
