In 2013, three in five of bankruptcies were due to the burden of medical bills. Health insurance coverage is especially important in the American Muslim community. Many Muslims do not have employer provided health insurance; in fact 20% are self-employed, 29% are under-employed and 17% are unemployed. In January 2014 , American Muslim Health Professionals AMHP launched the “Connecting Muslims to Coverage” campaign. In a span of 3 months, AMHP hired seven Community state leads and fostered relationships with 81 partner organizations that collectively hosted 119 enrollment events and reached over 27,000 individuals resulting in 1600 successful enrollments. AMHP created and shared numerous resources with organizations nationally. These resources included • Event planning guides • Outreach materials tailored to Muslim communities such as an ACA Jumu'ah Khutba Guide • An online events page where AMHP and partner organizations shared enrollment events in their communities • An email address dedicated to answering questions AMHP’s work has been recognized by the White House Office of Public Engagement and the Dept. of Health and Human Services Faith-Based Partnership Center. I have much more information on the way, but too much gets people bogged down. So, this is a five +minute presentation and I hope it helps anyone hurt at work in Illinois. If you are hurt at work while at the city of Chicago, I suggest you make sure you take an ambulance to the hospital. I hope you take every test you can to figure out what is wrong with you. I also suggest you take pictures when you get hurt, when you enter the ambulance, when you are at the hospital. Ask a friend to take pictures of everything. Pictures are your best friend and they will refresh your memory later. Most things after this are on cruise control. The city will ask you to go to Mercy Works for a doctor’s visit, the city will drug test you, the Mercy works doctors will make some recommendations for medical care. Many times, they will tell you take some pills and go back to work. Sometimes they recommend more tests and will give you some time off. If you do not cooperate with Mercy Works, they might say you have “conduct unbecoming a city worker.” As soon as you can, hire your own doctor to get the care you need. Many doctors do not want to deal with Chicago Workers Compensation cases because they wait years for their money. I strongly suggest you listen to your doctor and do what he says. Your health is important for the rest of your life. The City of Chicago does not give “light duty” unless you have Clout. Each week about 1.5 million Americans without paid sick leave go to work despite feeling ill. At least half of employees of restaurants and hospitals - two settings where disease is easily spread - go to work when they have a cold or the flu, according to a recent poll. To address that issue, Chipotle began offering paid sick leave to all its employees in the United States this year. The restaurant chain is hoping to reduce the spread of infectious disease - like the norovirus outbreaks traced to its restaurants last year and earlier this year. Though many other industrialized countries already require employers to offer paid sick leave to all employees, the United States does not. Shocked you are, I know.
