You can see more of our work and about us at http://www.Gravitas.us and purchase our plans off the shelf at http://www.wholesalehouseplans.com The Bear Creek is an expansive lodge style log home. From the tall covered entry with its queen post truss and into the foyer you are greeted with large, impressive log work. The spiral stair case is a work of art with a huge diameter central post and massive slabbed log treads. The house logs in this home 14" in diameter, uncommon for a milled log home. This home has a comfortable main level owner's suite with attached office and its own fireplace and private deck. An open living plan incorporates the gathering room, kitchen, and dining with room for twelve, and expandable to twice that. A smaller dining area is to the side in a screened porch area. The large, commercial kitchen is where all the activity will be, with island and peninsula seating for six. At the top of the spiral stair a catwalk leads each way to full suites with private balconies and great views. Also upstairs, but accessible by a second stair past the kitchen, is a huge bonus room above the three car garage that could be turned into a separate studio, more guest accommodations, or an in home gym. All the way down on the lower level is another world. This is where it shows you that every home is tailored to each individual client. This owner had an extensive gun collection and gun room for reloading, building, and cleaning his guns. Maybe this area is better suited for you as a craft room, artist's studio, or an in-home theater. Regardless, we work with your wants and needs list to modify one of our existing plans, or create a home that is specifically tailored to you.

Following the 2006 housing market crash in the United States, Revelations Architects/Builders set out to design a small house alternative to the bloated McMansion that had become so prevalent there. They aimed to distill housing down to the basics of providing space for eating, sleeping, bathing and socializing, while making efficient use of resources. The result was the E.D.G.E. (Experimental Dwelling for a Greener Environment). It consists of two modules containing the service areas of the house, with the kitchen in one and the bathroom in the other. The modules are intended to be prefabricated, ensuring that the plumbing, mechanical and cabinetry work is done in a controlled setting. Once those modules have been put in place, the space between is filled in with walls of glass to enclose the living/dining area. The whole structure is covered by a butterfly roof (one that slopes towards the center), facilitating rain-water collection. Utilities are housed in a small bump-out at one end of the house. The large glass areas provide natural lighting and solar heat gain during the day. Insulated barn-style doors can be closed to keep the heat in at night. The sliding doors also offer security when the home is unoccupied. The small home has 358 ft2 (33.2 m2) on the ground floor plus two loft bedrooms of 80 ft2 (7.4 m2) each over the kitchen and bath areas. The lofts are accessed by alternating tread stairs. A translucent panel behind one stair allows light from the adjacent window to reach the bathroom. The relatively low ceilings in the service and sleeping areas are balanced by the high ceiling of the central living space. The architects made extensive use of plywood on the inside, using it for the wall and ceiling finish and also for the built-in cabinetry and matching custom furniture. The plywood pieces were precut on computer-controlled machinery to ensure accuracy and to enable speedy construction. The E.D.G.E. was the recipient of a 2010 AIA (American Institute of Architects) Wisconsin Design Honor Award for overall design excellence and a 2011 National AIA Small Project Award. In this video we tour a traditional Icelandic turf house at the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum (http://islenskibaerinn.is/english/). Turf houses are the original green buildings because they were built using local and natural materials. In Southern Iceland they used turf from the local wetlands and lava stones to build thick walls that would insulate the houses against wind and cold weather. They imported small amounts of wood, or used driftwood. Most turf houses in Iceland were torn down after World War II when people were encouraged to modernize their homes which means there are almost no turf houses left. So we felt really lucky to visit the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum in Southern Iceland and meet with Hannes who runs the museum and whose grandparents and great grandparents used to live on, and run, the farm. Traditional turf houses, and especially turf houses on farms were built in clusters so you'll see there's many houses all linked together. Only one of them is actually the living space where you'll find the beds. And then in the other houses you would find things like a horse stable or a food processing area, and they did this to take advantage of insulation from shared walls. Each house is joined together with hallways so that people could go from one area of the house to the other without having to go outside. Inside the main home you can see that all of the beds were in one room and this was where everyone did all of their work, where they slept, where they ate, where they gave birth. Everything in an Icelanders life happened in this main living space and it really was communal living. In addition to having really thick walls made with the lava stones and the turf, the houses are also dug and built into the back of a hill so that they're protected from the cold Northerly winds. Hannes completely restored this old farmstead with his wife and mother, and while he continued to use the traditional methods using the turf and the lava stones for the walls, he did use corrugated iron for some of the outer walls and some of the newer roofs. It's really incredible to see how cozy and liveable these small spaces are even though they're built with such basic natural materials. If you're interested in turf houses and green buildings (and if you're planning a visit to Iceland!), we would definitely recommend visiting the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum - it was probably our favourite part of our trip!!! They have a website here if you want to learn more: http://islenskibaerinn.is/english/ You can also follow them on Facebook, and Instagram: https://www.facebook.com/islenskibaerinn https://www.instagram.com/islenski_baerinn/ We also want to say a big thank you to Eyvi (Eyjólfur Eyjólfsson) who we met at the Vöðlakot cafe at the Islenski Baerinn Turf House Museum who fed us delicious coffee & home made pancakes, and who took the time to play his beautiful langspil instrument that you see and hear at the beginning of the video. A meandering path leads to Eagle Point Cabin where it sits nestled between a rock outcrop and a thicket on the windswept west coast of Washington’s San Juan Island. The semi-sheltered building location was chosen to provide some protection from the winter winds and to block out views of the neighboring houses. Designed by Prentiss Architects, Eagle Point Cabin is a squat rectangular building with unfinished wood siding and a sod roof that merge with the natural landscape. From a distance, it almost passes for a simple homesteader’s cabin. However the interior is anything but basic, with extensive wood windows, custom cabinetry and high-end finishes. The small cabin has a nice layout that looks bigger than its actual 688 ft2 (63.9 m2) size. The kitchen along the back wall doubles as a passageway to the spacious bedroom and four-piece bath. The living room, bedroom and bathroom all have large corner windows, with the living room offering views of the ocean and Olympic mountains while the bedroom and bath focus on the nearby vegetation. The cabin is well-insulated with its green roof, 8″ of insulation in the walls, and triple-glazed windows on the north side. Because it also gets good winter sun exposure, there is little need to use the radiant heaters or the small woodstove in the living room. The chosen finishing materials probably made this cabin quite expensive, but substituting standard-sized windows or sliding doors and flat-pack cabinets would turn it into a fairly economical home. With a simple rectangular floor plan and single-slope roof, it could be relatively easy and inexpensive to build. Have a wonderful weekend! Eagle Point Cabin is currently listed for sale with Coldwell Banker San Juan Islands Inc. If you are susceptible to sticker shock, you might not want to click that link. Otherwise bear in mind that even with such a nicely finished cabin, the listing agent states that the value is in the land. Renaissance artist and craftsman Michael Ostaski gives a tour of the house truck he built in the 60's. To build his Land Yacht Michael started with a stripped down truck cab with a simple bare chassis behind and built EVERYTHING you see with his own hands (by himself). This includes: welding the foundational framework to the truck, complete skeletal system, extensive woodworking details, skylights, siding, roofing, electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, stained glass windows, upholstery, tile work, airbrush, etc (not to mention the design itself). A unique cabin stands in the Australian bush a couple hours drive from Melbourne. “Trunk House” is named for the stringybark tree trunks that encircle it, supporting the roof. They were the castoffs of logging operations, left behind in the surrounding woods due to the limited commercial value of forked trees. However Melbourne-based Paul Morgan Architects realized that it was possible to utilize the natural strength of the Y-shaped trunks by joining them to create what is effectively a large triangulated truss. The trunks were carefully fitted together at their tops and connected by hidden fasteners, giving the appearance of a single continuous piece of wood zig-zagging around the cabin. The trunks carry the outer ends of log rafters which radiate out from a central post. The single-slope roof projects out over a deck on one side of the cabin. On the opposite side, it extends over a carport before folding down into the ground. The cabin’s floor plan has two small bedroom in 85 m2 (915 ft2). The bedrooms and a bathroom are lined up on the carport side of the cabin. From the entrance door in the carport, a short hallway takes you past the private spaces and into the main living area. The first thing you see is a sweeping view of the forest, visible through a faceted semi-circular glass wall. With the roof supported by the log rafters and tree trunks, the outer wall is non-structural, allowing for the extensive glass. Looking out, the tree trunks create the illusion that the woods come right up to the cabin walls. To further integrate the cabin with the forest, the interior is lined with stringybark planks. The wood was milled on-site from the trees that had to be removed to make room for the cabin. It has a clear finish, retaining the natural color variations. The stringybark wood was also used to build the kitchen cabinets and a built-in seating and storage unit. Photographs by Peter Bennetts, courtesy of Paul Morgan Architects. http://www.archwaypress.com/house-plans.html Bungalow house plans are designed to hold simplicity, creativity, and natural materials with laid-back and convenient living as the key considerations. These are usually single level homes with a wide welcoming front and a relaxing rear porch to unwind with family, friends and neighbors. Also known as the California bungalow due to their extensive use of wood, open spaces and garden areas, these home designs are quite popular, affordable and most suitable for small families. The interiors are less formal and cozier. Because bungalow house designs are more in length and relatively less wide, they look pretty compact in size even though they use a lot of space.

The All Terrain Cabin (ATC) comes from BC-based design and local business collective, BARK, who developed the cargo home as a representation of the diversity and possibility in contemporary Canadian design culture. The ATC is a 480-sq-ft cabin, fully equipped for self-sustained, off-grid living. The container has been made ultra-modern with aluminum, wood and glass. It’s a product of what appears to be extensive collaboration, and is now on tour to let the world see what Canada’s got going on. BARK was founded in recognition “that Canada is being short-changed by the widespread, limited stereotypes of what our country is and has to offer – maple syrup, raw logs, and handsome Mounties. BARK’s Founders dedicated themselves to expanding those perceptions by showcasing Canada’s innovative design talent.” Info & Photo: http://dwellboxes.com/ Music: Walk In The Park by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com/ Thank you for watching!

Timber framing is the method of creating framed structures of heavy timber jointed together with various joints, but most commonly originally via lap jointing, and then later pegged mortise and tenon joints. Lengthening scarf joints. Diagonal bracing is used to prevent "racking", or movement of structural vertical beams or posts. Originally, German (and other) master carpenter would peg the joints with allowance of approximately an inch, enough room for the wood to move as it seasoned, then cut the pegs and drive the beam home fully into its socket. To cope with variable sizes and shapes of hewn (via adze or axe) and sawn timbers, two main carpentry methods were employed: scribe carpentry and square rule carpentry. Scribing was used throughout Europe, especially from the 12th century to the 19th century and subsequently imported to North America where it was common into the early 19th century. In a scribe frame, timber sockets are fashioned or "tailor-made" to fit its corresponding timber; thus each timber piece must be numbered (or "scribed"). Square-rule carpentry was developed in New England in the 18th century. It used housed joints in main timbers to allow for interchangeable braces and girts. Today, standardised timber sizing mean that timber framing can be treated incorporated into mass-production methods as per the joinery industry, especially where timber is cut by precision CNC machinery. To finish the walls, the spaces between the timbers (in German called Fächer) were often infilled with wattle and daub, loam, brick, or rubble. Plastered faces on the exterior and interior were often "ceiled" with wainscoting for insulation and warmth. This juxtaposition of exposed timbered beams and infilled spaces created the distinctive "half-timbered", or occasionally termed "Tudor" style. Jetties For more details on this topic, see Jettying. A jetty is an upper floor which requires a structural cantilevered horizontal beam called a jetty bressummer to bear the weight of the new wall, projecting outward from the preceding floor or storey. In an era where houses were taxed with respect to ground-floor area (square footage) extensive jettying was employed to create higher storeys of greater area. In the city of York in the UK, the famous street known as The Shambles exemplifies this, where jettied houses seem to almost touch above the street. Timbers Historically, the timbers would have been hewn square using a felling axe and then surface finished with a broad axe. If required, smaller timbers were ripsawn from the hewn baulks using pitsaws or frame saws. Today it is more common for timbers to be bandsawn, and the timbers may sometimes be machine planed on all four sides. The vertical timbers include * posts (main supports at corners and other major uprights), * Wall studs (subsidiary upright limbs in framed walls), for example, close studding. The horizontal timbers include * sill-beams (also called ground-sills or sole-pieces, at the bottom of a wall into which posts and studs are fitted using tenons), * noggin-pieces (the horizontal timbers forming the tops and bottoms of the frames of infill-panels), * wall-plates (at the top of timber-framed walls that support the trusses and joists of the roof). When jettying, horizontal elements can include: * the jetty bressummer (or breastsummer): the main sill (horizontal piece) on which the projecting wall above rests and which stretches across the whole width of the jetty wall. The bressummer is itself cantilevered forward, beyond the wall below it. * the dragon-beam which runs diagonally from one corner to another, and supports the corner posts above and supported by the corner posts below. * the jetty beams or joists which conform floor dimensions above but are at right angles to the jetty-plates that conform to the shorter dimensions of "roof" of the floor below. Jetty beams are morticed at 45° into the sides of the dragon beams. They are the main constituents of the cantilever system and determine how far the jetty projects * the jetty-plates, designed to carry the jetty beams. The jetty plates themselves are supported by the corner posts of the recessed floor below. The sloping timbers include * trusses (the slanting timbers forming the triangular framework at gables and roof), * braces (slanting beams giving extra support between horizontal or vertical members of the timber frame), * herringbone bracing (a decorative and supporting style of frame, usually at 45 ° to the upright and horizontal directions of the frame). MORE INFO: http://www.parts-express.com/solstice-mltl-reference-tower-speaker-kit--300-708 Parts Express is proud to introduce the Solstice, a reference quality 2-way speaker kit designed exclusively for us by Jeff Bagby. The Solstice kit is a no compromise speaker using all Morel drivers in a MMT tower configuration. The TiCW 638Nd woofers, from Morel's Titanium series, feature some of the most advanced designs on the market with a 3" Hexatech™ voice coil on a titanium former, Hybrid™ neodymium/ferrite motor, and Uniflow™ aluminum frame. A CAT 308 tweeter, an updated version of Morel's classic MDT-30, handles the top octaves delivering an extremely dynamic and natural sound. The solid MDF enclosure panels are all CNC milled to tight tolerances ensuring easy assembly. The finished cabinet has extensive bracing, double thick front baffle, and a rear firing slot port creating a very solid enclosure tuned to extend low frequency response down to 30 Hz. Measuring at 38" tall the enclosure places the tweeter near optimum listening height, making this a small floor standing speaker with no need for speaker stands. Jeff Bagby on the drivers," These drivers are exceptional sounding, as well as possessing excellent design and build quality. The tweeter is so smooth that it is very simple to cross over, and I really like the motor design and cone on these woofers. The vocal reproduction is truly high-end …These are making me rethink what I should use as a reference system." Jeff says," This is honestly one of the best two-way designs I have ever done. I can find very little to fault. Not only is the response exceptionally flat, but it sounds very balanced, with fantastic resolution and detail. Vocals are beautiful, as are instruments. Bass is full, extended, and very impressive. Nothing stands out, it is just sound honest and accurate… It is really a high-end speaker worthy to be compared with systems that cost several thousand dollars." This kit includes parts to build one speaker. Binding posts, speaker wire and cabinet feet are not included. This small forest home in Norway was designed by Huus og Heim Arkitektur. The client asked that the house be designed to preserve and respect the natural character of the site. It mixes the clean lines of modern design with a traditional timber frame and extensive use of wood as requested by the client. As with most timber framed houses, the placement of the posts influenced the room sizes and layout. In this home, the timber frame is based on a grid of roughly 3 m by 3 m (10′ by 10′). The compact living area is arranged in an L shape with an eat-in kitchen at one end and a sitting area at the other. Half the living area is open to the roof and the mezzanine loft above, which the owner uses for an office and studio. Large windows to the south and west take advantage of the available views and sun, while tall narrow windows to the east allow views of the nearby trees. Most of the interior walls are paneled in wood as per the owner’s wish, but the wood is balanced by the white ceiling and floors. The 85 m2 (915 ft2) house has two bedrooms in addition to the loft. The ground floor bedroom is the smaller of the two but it has almost direct access to the bathroom. The upstairs bedroom was probably intended for only occasional guest use. Getting from the upstairs bedroom to the bathroom requires following a circuitous route through most of the house, so it doesn’t seem very convenient for regular use. Join the 'Online Cob Workshop' today: http://www.members.thiscobhouse.com/online-cob-house-workshop/ For the bonus ebooks and Tiny Cob House Plans, after purchasing email me for them to alex AT thiscobhouse DOT com If you really think about it, most people can’t go to attend a Cob and Natural Building workshop. There are various reasons for this, but usually its one of these: - You just don’t have enough time available - You can’t get vacation days off - You can’t afford the high workshop fees and travel expenses I recognized this as a big problem facing the natural building movement. How are people ever going to be empowered with these skills and make a difference in the way we build if most people are barred from taking workshops for these sorts of reasons? For a solution to this problem, I wanted to completely eliminate the reasons people usually have for not being able to take a cob workshop. So, this is what I did in a nutshell… I took the traditional cob workshop and made it virtual. Yes, I made a comprehensive cob workshop that can be taken via the internet. This is what that means for you: You can learn from home at your own pace You don’t need to ever take vacation days off No travel required You only pay a fraction of the cost! As a teacher who’s goal is to deliver my students with a pathway to success, I have made it my task to over-deliver with this course. I guarantee that you will learn more in this online course than any other comprehensive workshop you could actually go and attend. Live workshops are great and very important, but with most of them they just don’t cover all of the important topics. Even though workshops can be for a week or more, most of that time is usually not spent efficiently learning all the aspects of building really needed. A standard week-long cob workshop is usually focused so much on mixing large quantities of cob and building cob walls that a whole list of other important topics is passed right over. Again, in my attempt to solve problems I’ve made the online cob workshop comprehensive in its scope. You don’t get the hands on aspect of a live workshop, but you get everything else and then some more! Here’s a snippet of what you’ll learn in the online Cob Workshop Classroom during the first 3 months. The lessons are comprised of videos and downloadable PDF readings. Off-the-grid English home nestled on a secluded lagoon Designed by Platform 5 Architects, this unique home is nestled on a secluded lagoon in the heart of the Norfolk Broads in Wroxham, a village in England. The exterior facade presents a more contemporary design from the neighboring properties, yet respects the tranquility of its natural setting. The residence features water on three sides, while a series of pitched roofs emulate nearby boat sheds. The exterior is clad in western red cedar shingles, punctuated by extensive windows, perfectly framing the waterfront views. A deep roof overhang shades an outdoor living area where one can sit back and enjoy the natural surrounding environment. Raised above the waterline, this helps to encourage floodwaters to flow underneath the home’s landscaped timber deck. The house sits on a small promontory in a secluded lagoon in the Norfolk. Broads and offers a contemporary counterpoint to more traditionally designed neighbouring houses, while respecting the peaceful natural setting. It is arranged as three low rise bays beneath a series of pitched roofs, which are reminiscent of nearby boat sheds. The house is clad in black-stained timber shingles, a traditional material forming a unifying ribbon element that emphasises its classic Broads silhouette. On the lagoon elevation, extensive glazing gives a more transparent appearance from the waterfront, and a deep canopy creates a sheltered outdoor area where you can enjoy the setting and the elements. The house is raised above the waterline, allowing floodwater to flow beneath a landscaped timber deck. Its remote, largely off-grid location requires on-site sewage treatment and a water borehole whilst solar panels and timber stove provide power and heating. The limited access has resulted in the design being developed as a lightweight timber frame sitting on a piled ground structure as construction materials will need to be brought in by barge. Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home (Paul’s ebook: www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com) Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle (“there weren’t even any trails for walking”, explains Sarah). So they sold their home and moved with Paul’s “project”: two shipping containers he’d been transforming into a kitchen/bathroom + bedroom/living room. They found someone willing to let them park their new home on their rural property in exchange for making improvements to the land. When the couple first moved onto the property, the home was a very simple shelter and over the following three years, they built the containers into a proper home. Their home is completely off the electric and water grids. When they first moved to the bush they used a 3kw Honda generator, but they’ve since installed 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries and phased out the generator. They have enough energy to power their home with all its conventional appliances, including a standard fridge/freezer. For heating, they rely on firewood (collected from fallen trees on the property; they have “not cut down a single tree”). For air conditioning, they use fans and AC “during really hot days”. In the beginning they had to rely on water deliveries, but Paul has since installed an extensive rainwater capture setup- both on the roof and gutters beneath the home- which provides for all their water needs: 65 square metres of rain water collection in 10,000 liters of storage. The indoor bathroom includes a shower, but Paul built an outdoor, open air bathtub which they heat with solar in the summertime. They’ve also created an extensive vegetable garden inside a netted garden cage (after the animals and hot sun destroyed their first attempts). For eggs, they have two hen houses. Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs.
