Child cancer hits almost 10,000 children in the UK

01:56
http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ What are the implications of these latest figures? Recent figures have revealed that almost 10,000 children in the UK have cancer. In today's video, we look at the importance of follow up care for children who survive cancer. Research conducted by Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Cancer Intelligence Network have shown there are almost 10,000 children aged 0-14 currently living with cancer in the UK, with almost half being diagnosed at least 5 years ago. It has been suggested that many children who survive cancer have a higher risk of health problems such as heart and lung conditions as well as problems with growth and development. Suggestions are made that experts believe children often do not receive timely and appropriate follow-up care and that there needs to be a greater understanding of the risks faced by those treated as children. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: The most commonly diagnosed cancer in children is leukaemia, which accounts for almost a third of new cases a year. It is encouraging to see that almost half of all under 14s diagnosed with cancer are still living five-years on, but a concern that many children will end up with an increased risk of other health conditions, including an increased risk of developing secondary cancers. It is important that Adult specialists and GPs need to know how to manage the side-effects and lifestyle changes that can affect those treated for cancer as children. Why have lung cancer survival rates have improved substantially?

01:43
http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ The good news on ling cancer survival rates It has recently been revealed that the one-year survival rate for lung cancer has improved substantially. We take a look at the figures in today's video. According to the National Cancer Intelligence Network, there are almost twice as many people alive a year after diagnosis of lung cancer now than there were in 1990. The figures show that in 2010, 29% of men patients and 33% of women patients were alive a year after lung cancer diagnosis. In comparison, only 17% of lung cancer patients were alive a year after being diagnosed in 1990. Suggestions have been made that these figures show that England is approaching the survival rate of other countries which in the past has been significantly better. We asked Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group for his thoughts on the survival rate of lung cancer patients: Lung cancer has often struggled to attract the same level of research funding as other common cancers such as prostate and breast cancer, perhaps because its seen as a 'self-inflicted' cancer, but almost 20% of lung cancer patients have never smoked and 100 people die from the disease every day in the UK alone, so there is an urgent need for more research in this area. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Please leave your interesting views and questions in the comments section below. ***DISCLAIMER*** I do not own the rights to this video. Matt Frei explores the poisoning of Russian Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, searching for clues to potential motives that could explain why the former British double agent was targeted. The search takes him into the murky world of espionage, politics and crime, examining whether the latest chapter in a number of suspicious deaths of Russians on British soil could all be linked. The Kremlin denies it, but were these simply tragic endings or brazen state-sponsored assassinations?

Lochlann Jain "Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us"

43:20
This event was held at the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine & Society at the University of California, Berkeley. "Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us" Thursday 06 Feb 2014 4:00 - 6:00 pm Lochlann Jain Associate Professor of Anthropology, Stanford University Professor Jain has written a book entitled Malignant: How Cancer Becomes Us, which is in many ways, not about cancer. This talk will visit the main themes and analytics of Malignant. Nearly half of all Americans will be diagnosed with an invasive cancer—an all-too ordinary aspect of daily life. Through a powerful combination of cultural analysis and memoir, this stunningly original book explores why cancer remains so confounding, despite the billions of dollars spent in the search for a cure. Amidst furious debates over its causes and treatments, scientists generate reams of data—information that ultimately obscures as much as it clarifies. Award-winning anthropologist S. Lochlann Jain deftly unscrambles the high stakes of the resulting confusion. Expertly reading across a range of material that includes history, oncology, law, economics, and literature, Jain explains how a national culture that simultaneously aims to deny, profit from, and cure cancer entraps us in a state of paradox—one that makes the world of cancer virtually impossible to navigate for doctors, patients, caretakers, and policy makers alike. This chronicle, burning with urgency and substance leavened with brio and wit, offers a lucid guide to understanding and navigating the quicksand of uncertainty at the heart of cancer. Malignant vitally shifts the terms of an epic battle we have been losing for decades: the war on cancer.

If that isn’t enough to let you know that there are secrets going on here, just wait! One incident that happened in 1968 led to the of 6000 sheep. No one really knew for sure what had happened, but it was thought this facility had something to do with it. As far as the percent of the US population, this is equivalent to over 60,000 dogs. It was denied for 30 years that the facility was involved in any way, but in 1998, it was revealed that the ground released a chemical nerve agent loose that the 6000 sheep. Another incident happened in 2011 when a soldier at the base went missing. Earlier that year, Dugway Proving Ground was placed on lockdown. They said that the employees were not allowed to leave, and those coming to work were not allowed in. It was said that there were no threats or injuries, but no explanation was given. There were about 1,300 people in lock down at the time. It was later stated that a vial containing VX nerve agent had gone missing…temporarily. Later that year, the soldier left to go to work, and called a friend saying he had run out of gas, and had lost his shoes. A rescue crew later found the car he’d been driving…which was mysteriously borrowed. Items of clothing, such as his hat and shoes were found as well. But the man…never was. It has also been reported that numerous UFOs have been sighted, and even stored in the area. But, chances are, unless something disastrous happens, we’ll never find out any of Dugway’s secrets. #8 Raven Rock, Site R Raven Rock Mountain Complex is a military installation bunker in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania. It has been described as an “underground Pentagon.” Many note cell phones and GPS devices do not work near Site R, which means there is likely a blocking device used to prevent hacking or communications. To take the secrecy to the next level, on May 25, 2007, a new policy declared “it is unlawful for any person entering in or on the property … to make any photograph, sketch, picture, drawing, map or graphical representation of the Raven Rock Mountain Complex without first obtaining the necessary permission.” This would include Google Maps. The site was, however, depicted in the video game “Fallout 3” as a base of operations for what was once the U.S. Government. It is known for being powered by a reactor and being one of the few places with fresh water. In the game, of course. #7 The Cheyenne Mountain Complex The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a military base and in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Built during the 1950’s as a defense against long-range Soviet, it is located inside the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. At one time, the complex was the base for the United States Space Command and NORAD. This is where they monitored the aircraft in space, as well as missiles and other space systems. In 2008, both the United States Space Command and NORAD were moved to a new location. Many thought Cheyenne Mountain was closed after that but the Cheyenne Mountain Complex is still NORAD and USNORTHCOM’s Alternate command center. There are over a dozen government and Department of Defense agencies inside that can’t be named publicly. The center is now also used as a place to train flight crews. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is built 2000ft under granite, and is made up of 15 three-story buildings. A thousand springs around the buildings prevent them from budging even one-inch. There are 5 lakes inside the mountain that can be used for drinking water or for firefighting, and as a backup heating and cooling system. The complex used to be open to tours, but since 9/11, all tours to the public have ceased. #6 Pine Gap Pine Gap is a satellite ground station in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. But it is operated by both Australia and the United States. It is officially known as the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap. It is run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The station controls and monitors United States spy satellites as they pass over the one third of the globe. Paul Davies - The eerie silence: Are we alone in the Universe?

01:07:14
Professor Paul Davies gives this public lecture entitled: The eerie silence: Are we alone in the Universe? on Friday, 18 May 2012 at The Australian National University. Paul Davies is a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, astrobiologist and best-selling author. He is Regents' Professor at Arizona State University, where he directs the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science -- a cosmic think tank that tackles the "big questions" of existence, from the origin of the universe to the origin of life and the nature of time. Davies also directs a National Cancer Institute research program that tackles cancer from a physics perspective. Among his research accomplishments, Davies helped explain how black holes radiate energy, what caused the ripples in the cosmic afterglow of the big bang, and why life on Earth may have come from Mars. Davies has written about 30 books, most recently The Eerie Silence: Are We Alone in the Universe? His preoccupation with deep conceptual problems and his fearless championing of bold new ideas earned Davies the epithet of 'The Disruptor' in a recent profile in Nature magazine. His many media projects include presenting two six-part series on The Big Questions for Australian television. He has awards from The Royal Society and the UK Institute of Physics, and also received the 1995 Templeton Prize. In 2007 he was named a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen's birthday honours list.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the United States is ready to impose more sanctions on Turkey if detained American pastor Andrew Brunson is not released from house arrest. Mnuchin made the statement during a cabinet meeting with President Trump on Thursday. "We have put sanctions on several of their cabinet members, working with you, we have more that we are planning to do if they don't release him quickly.” Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Turkey's ministers of Justice and Interior in response to Brunson's detention. Turkey accuses Brunson of espionage and is holding him under house arrest pending his trial. Hundreds of U.S. newspapers launched an unprecedented and coordinated defense of press freedom in response to President Donald Trump's frequent attacks on media organizations. An estimated 350 newspapers of all sizes across the country published a series of editorials in support of a free and vigorous press. The campaign comes as Trump has repeatedly accused the media of disseminating what he calls fake news and denounced it as the enemy of the American people. On Thursday, Trump tweeted "THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY.” This is VOA news. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has named Brian Hook, the top diplomats' senior policy adviser, as the special representative for Iran on Thursday. Pompeo said that Hook will lead the Iran Action Group, which was also announced Thursday and will coordinate the State Department's actions against Tehran. "Our new strategy addresses all manifestations of the Iranian threat, and the new Iran Action Group will be focused on implementing that strategy.” Washington announced earlier this year that it would withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and has once again imposed sanctions on Tehran, calling the country a destabilizing influence in the region. The United States has said it would only end the sanctions if Iran allowed the negotiation of a tougher deal. Gunmen launched an attack on a training center on the grounds of Afghanistan's intelligence service in Kabul, one day after dozens of people were killed in an assault on an education institution. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for both attacks. Bahar Mehr, an adviser to the minister of interior, told VOA that four suicide attackers were involved in Thursday's latest attack. He said one bomber exploded himself and three others were killed in fighting with security forces. He said three Afghan security personal were also wounded in cleanup operations but no civilians were harmed. Theresa May will unveil plans to use artificial intelligence to help prevent 22,000 cancer deaths a year by 2033.In a speech setting out how science can transform health, the prime minister will also say at least 50,000 people each year with prostate, ovarian, lung or bowel cancer will be diagnosed at an earlier stage than they would have been.Speaking in Macclesfield, Cheshire, Mrs May will say: "Late diagnosis of otherwise treatable illnesses is one of the biggest causes of avoidable deaths."And the development of smart technologies to analyse great quantities of data quickly and with a higher degree of accuracy than is possible by human beings opens up a whole new field of medical research and gives us a new weapon in our armoury in the fight against disease."Achieving this mission will not only save thousands of lives. It will incubate a whole new industry around AI-in-healthcare, creating high-skilled science jobs across the country, drawing on existing centres of excellence in places like Edinburgh, Oxford and Leeds - and helping to grow new ones." All of the data and technological advances needed to help cut cancer deaths are available but a system has not yet been set up to bring everything together.Medical records, along with information about patients' habits and genetics, will be cross-referenced with national data to spot those at an early stage of cancer.Mrs May will also announce another target to ensure that five more years of people's lives will be healthy, independent and active by 2035.Around £1.4bn has already been invested in research and development for the "grand challenges" programme the targets are being set under.Sir Harpal Kumar, chief executive officer of Cancer Research, said: "The government's mission to revolutionise healthcare using the power of artificial intelligence is pioneering.Advances in detection technologies depend on the intelligent use of data and have the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives every year."We need to ensure we have the right infrastructure, embedded in our health system, to make this possible.

Paul Affleck - international research collaboration

02:36
Malignant melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK (2011), accounting for 4% of all new cases. The BioGenoMEL project, established by Professor Julia Newton-Bishop (Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology), is based on patient data and statistics, and is testing the hypothesis that melanoma survival is determined by the tumour, the host, and the host’s environment. Paul Affleck, project manager for BioGenoMEL, talks about the value of international collaboration in this research.

Trump Goes Rogue Calls Out Islamists in Early Morning Tweetstor

04:26
Trump Breaking News Network - Trump Goes Rogue, Calls Out Islamists in Early-Morning Tweetstorm. BY MARTIN WALSH. Refusing to cower to political correctness, President Donald Trump went rogue Wednesday, taking dead aim at radical Islamic terrorists and the violence they sow. Trump retweeted three separate videos from Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of the right-wing U.K. party Britain First, that reportedly show Muslims attacking innocent people. At least one of the videos has been questioned about its authenticity, and whether the attacker portrayed really was Muslim, but White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday said the president’s intent was to spread the message of danger from abroad. The retweets, she said, did that. “Whether it’s a real video, the threat is real,” Sanders said, according to the Washington Examiner. “(Trump’s) goal is to promote strong border security and strong national security.” In the first video — the one questioned by critics — Fransen said a Muslim migrant was depicted attacking a Dutch boy who uses a crutch. TRENDING: CNN Boycotts WH Christmas Party, But Sarah’s Priceless Comeback Is the Real Story It’s a disturbing scene. The attacker approached the victim in a clearly threatening way, then stood briefly with his arm around him. The individual recording the attack can be heard saying, “let’s go.” Around the 15-second mark, the attacker takes a step back, and then leaps forward to kick the victim in the leg. The attacker then punches and kicks the victim several times, while the man recording the video can be heard laughing. In the second video from Fransen, an apparently Muslim man can be seen destroying a statue of the Virgin Mary. After making a statement in Arabic, the man slams the statue to the ground, shattering it. Mary, of course, was the mother of Jesus and serves as a symbol of strength and purity for countless Christians. RELATED: Big White House Win for Everyday People, One of Worst Obama Agencies Corralled Fransen claimed the third clip showed an Islamist mob assaulting several people after they were pushed from a ledge on a rooftop. In the video, a man can be seen with a flag that appears to be the banner used by the Islamic State terrorist group. Around the one-minute mark in the video, other men can be seen tossing several people off a ledge down to the rooftop, where a group of men appears to be attacking them when they land. According to Fransen, the victims included a teenage boy who was beaten to death. The savagery of the scene is appalling. Warning: This video contains graphic footage that may be uncomfortable: As Sanders explained to the White House press corps, Trump’s decision to retweet these three videos reportedly showing Islamist violence was meant to show the American people how crucial border security is — and how dangerous the threat of radical Islam really is. By informing his millions of followers of these heinous attacks, Trump is definitely taking a stand on the issue, and trying to show Americans why the country needs extreme vetting, a border wall, and a travel ban on individuals trying to get into the U.S. from terrorist-ridden nations. No country can afford to normalize these violent attacks from radical jihadists. Rather than cower to radical Islam like Barack Obama, Trump is putting the terrorism issue front and center. Please like and share this story if you agree with President Trump that we must do everything we can to keep Americans safe from this kind of violence! ----------------------------------------------------------- MAKE DONATIONS HERE http://trumpbreakingnewsnetwork.net/donation ----------------------------------------------------------- Source: https://conservativetribune.com/trump-rogue-calls-out-islamists/ Please subscribe and share on your social media. Big Data for Better Medicine

01:02:41
Speaker/Performer: David Haussler, Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering, UC Santa Cruz Sponsor: CITRIS (Ctr for Info Technology Research in the Interest of Society) UCSC has built the Cancer Genomics Hub (CGHub) for the US National Cancer Institute, designed to hold data for all major NCI projects. To date it has served more than more than 15 petabytes of data to the research committee. Cancer is exceedingly complex, with thousands of subtypes involving an immense number of different combinations of mutations. The only way we will understand it is to gather together DNA data from many thousands of cancer genomes so that we have the statistical power to distinguish between recurring combinations of mutations that drive cancer progression and "passenger" mutations that occur by random chance. Currently, with the exception of a few international research projects, most cancer genomics research is taking place in research silos, with little opportunity for data sharing. If this trend continues, we lose an incredible opportunity. Soon cancer genome sequencing will be widespread in clinical practice, making it possible in principle to study as many as a million cancer genomes. For these data to also have impact on understanding cancer, we must begin soon to move data into a network of compatible global cloud storage and computing systems, and design mechanisms that allow genome and clinical data to be used in research with appropriate patient consent. The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health was created to address this problem. Our Data Working Group is designing the future of large-scale genomics for cancer and other diseases. This is an opportunity we cannot turn away from. Biography: David Haussler develops new statistical and algorithmic methods to explore the molecular function, evolution, and disease process in the human genome, integrating comparative and high-throughput genomics data to study gene structure, function, and regulation. He is credited with pioneering the use in genomics of hidden Markov models (HMMs), stochastic context-free grammars, and discriminative kernel methods. As a collaborator on the international Human Genome Project, his team posted the first publicly available computational assembly of the human genome sequence on the Internet on July 7, 2000. His team subsequently developed the UCSC Genome Browser, a web-based tool that is used extensively in biomedical research and serves, along with the European Ensembl platform, virtually all large-scale vertebrate genomics projects, including NHGRI’s ENCODE project, the 1000 Genomes Project, and NCI’s TCGA. As the first designated Trusted Partner of the NIH, he built the CGHub database to hold NCI’s cancer genome data and is a co-founder and organizing member of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), a coalition of the top research, health care, and disease advocacy organizations that have taken the first steps to standardize and enable secure sharing of genomic and clinical data.

Canadian "Foiled Terror Plot" And The Intelligence Community

In his first court appearance since the "foiled terror plot" Toronto-area resident Raed Jaser maintains he is innocent and "plans to defend himself vigorously" against the charges. He is currently facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, participating in a terrorist organization and conspiracy to interfere with transportation facilities. Knowing that the FBI, CSIS and the RCMP have a history of setting up innocent men through CSIS informants I decided to ask his lawyer John Norris if any of these agencies had any contact with Jaser during their monitoring process over the past year, if they were infiltrated by a CSIS informant and why were the FBI and the department of homeland security involved in this case. Survey reveals huge public anger at Virgin Care and NHS

01:39
Survey reveals huge public anger at Virgin Care and NHS as campaigners deliver a massive petition and “re-brand” Woking Walk-in Centre On Saturday 6th June Health campaigners from Surrey delivered over 1200 petition signatures and displayed a giant banner outside Woking Community Hospital to expose how the government and private companies like Virgin care are misleading patients, by using the NHS logo. The banner read Do Virgin Care? No logo – Why the cover up? The NHS branded Walk In centre in Woking Community Hospital is in fact run by Virgin Care, yet there is no visible evidence that this is the case. Local activists collected petition signatures from homes and streets within a 5 mile radius of Woking community hospital walk in centre In an attempt to gauge public feeling on the issue of for profit service providers operating from behind the NHS logo. Along with the petition the following question and responses were taken Q1) Have you or your direct family used Woking walk in centre? Total respondents: 821 NUMBER PERCENTAGE YES 698 85% NO 123 14% Q2) Are you aware it is operated by Virgin Care? Total respondents: 752 NUMBER PERCENTAGE YES 99 13% NO 653 86% Q3) Do you think for-profit companies should be able to operate from behind the NHS logo? Total respondents: 787 NUMBER PERCENTAGE YES 6 1% NO 781 99% The People’s NHS believe that this is a serious affront to patients and local communities who have been actively misled into believing that they are being treated by the NHS, when in actual fact that is not the case. In 2010 even the then Tory health minister Simon Burns said: “The NHS is protective of the logo. Whilst I am happy with competition with the independent sector we would not be happy for the use of the logo. This can be misleading and an endorsement of the very people that the NHS are supposed to be competing against.” Abdul Majid a local supporter of the People’s NHS said: “As a disabled person who has been helped so much by our NHS over the years, I feel the government are not being transparent about who, precisely is treating us. Private Companies like Virgin are using the NHS logo even though they are not the NHS. “Virgin spends millions promoting their brand, ultimately to get us to buy their products and services. I always thought good strategic partnerships are widely promoted as benefiting shareholders. But when it comes to NHS business interests at Woking community hospital i only find out Virgin Care run things after speaking with local activists. ” It is wrong to allow private companies to use the NHS brand to provide services for those who are ill and vulnerable and to portray themselves as doing so as part of the NHS. Since the introduction of the Health and Social Care Act (2012), private for-profit companies have been awarded billions of pounds worth of contracts to run NHS services. Over the last year alone private firms have won £3.5 billion worth of new clinical contracts – an increase of 500% on the previous year. 4. Neuroscience -- Brains, Minds, and Selves: What is it like to be a bat, and what does it matter?

08:25
This is part 4 of a 7-part talk Presented by James Giordano Ph.D, M.Phil., Director of the Center for Neurotechnology Studies, and Chair of Academic Programs at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, Arlington, VA. The field of neuroscience has achieved considerable insight to the workings of the brain. While the most essential question how brains produce consciousness and mind remains enigmatic, what is becoming increasingly evident is that even simple brains enable a variety of complex functions including the capacity to think, feel pain and be self-aware. Thus, it appears that if an organism has the neurological wetware that is, a brain of some sort it is likely, if not probable that they will be able to run a program that produces a mind. In this lecture, Dr. James Giordano, a neuroscientist and neuroethicist, argues that the cornerstone question is not if other organisms have a mind, but what kind of mind they have. He discusses whether neuroscience and technology can provide some insight to philosopher Thomas Nagels metaphorical query, what is it like to be a bat? In other words, now that science has privileged a realization that non-human minds can exist, will technology allow us to know what it is like to be another being, and what can we -or perhaps more importantly, should we do with such knowledge? Dr. Giordano discusses key questions and issues that have arisen in, and from modern neuroscience, including: Do all brains give rise to minds?; Do all minds give rise to a self?; How much brain is required to evoke and sustain a mind or self?and How much brain must be changed to change a mind or self? He discusses how both these questions and their potential answers really do matter, as they force us to confront long-held, somewhat dogmatic views about the nature of consciousness, what it means to be, the uniqueness of humans, the ubiquity of pain, and the moral implications and consequences of our regard and actions. Giordano addresses how things neuro can be misinterpreted, misperceived and misused by the public, market and socio-political agendas. In cautioning against such misdirection, he argues for a neuroethics that enables science and society to use current knowledge in ways that prudently inform and guide our treatment of both human and non-human selves. Views expressed are those of the speaker and do not necessarily represent the views of the National Capital Area Skeptics James Giordano Ph.D, M.Phil., is Director of the Center for Neurotechnology Studies, and Chair of Academic Programs at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, Arlington, VA, and is Senior Research Associate of the Wellcome Centre for Neuroethics, and Uehiro Centre for Practical Philosophy at the University of Oxford, UK. He is IGERT Professor of Science, Technology, Ethics and Policy at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Neuroscience and Neuroethics at Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität, Bonn, Germany, and is Chair of the Capital Consortium on Neuroscience, Ethics, Legal and Social Issues (www.ccnelsi.org). Dr. Giordanos most recent books include Scientific and Philosophical Perspectives in Neuroethics (with Bert Gordijn, Cambridge University Press); Pain, Mind, Meaning and Medicine (PPM Press), and Pain Medicine: Philosophy, Ethics, and Policy (with Mark Boswell; Linton Atlantic Books). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journals Philosophy, Ethics and Humanities in Medicine, and Synesis: A Journal of Sceince, Technology, Ethics and Policy; Associate Editor of the international journal Neuroethics, and Series Editor of Advances in Neurotechnology: Ethical, Legal and Social Issues, published by CRC Press. The author of over 130 papers on neuroscience, neurotechnology, and neuroethics, Dr. Giordanos ongoing research is focused upon the neuropathology of chronic pain, and the moral, ethical and social issues evoked by the use of novel neurotechnologies in the study and treatment of pain. He and his wife Sherry, a naturalist, writer, and artist, commute between Old Town Alexandria, VA and Oxford, UK. (For further information, please see: www.neurobioethics.org

Are Nanoparticles Alive? Dr Amanda Barnard

49:06
About the talk In the world of science fiction, nanotechnology is often shown as swarms of micro-machines that act without the need for human supervision. Much like their biological counterparts, these imagined devices even sometimes possess their own intelligence. The imagination of science fiction writers has taken this high tech fantasy beyond the reality. But scientists have imagination too, and increasingly they are taking nanomaterials to remarkable places with properties that sound stranger than fiction. In this talk, Dr Amanda Barnard will take us through the latest advances in nanotechnology and answer the fantastic question: 'Are nanoparticles alive?' About the speaker Dr. Amanda Barnard is an Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Science leader, and head of the Virtual Nanoscience Laboratory at CSIRO. She received her PhD (Physics) in 2003, followed by a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory (USA), and the prestigious senior research position as Violette & Samuel Glasstone Fellow at the University of Oxford (UK) with an Extraordinary Research Fellowship at The Queen's College. She joined CSIRO as an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow in 2009, and since then has won the 2009 Young Scientist Prize in Computational Physics from IUPAP, the 2009 Mercedes Benz Environmental Research Award, the 2009 Malcolm McIntosh Award from the Prime Minister of Australia for the Physical Scientist of the Year, the 2010 Frederick White Prize from the Australian Academy of Science, the 2010 Eureka Prize for Scientific Research, and the 2014 ACS Nano Lectureship for Asia-Pacific.
