Why have lung cancer survival rates have improved substantially?

01:43
http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ The good news on ling cancer survival rates It has recently been revealed that the one-year survival rate for lung cancer has improved substantially. We take a look at the figures in today's video. According to the National Cancer Intelligence Network, there are almost twice as many people alive a year after diagnosis of lung cancer now than there were in 1990. The figures show that in 2010, 29% of men patients and 33% of women patients were alive a year after lung cancer diagnosis. In comparison, only 17% of lung cancer patients were alive a year after being diagnosed in 1990. Suggestions have been made that these figures show that England is approaching the survival rate of other countries which in the past has been significantly better. We asked Brett Hill, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group for his thoughts on the survival rate of lung cancer patients: Lung cancer has often struggled to attract the same level of research funding as other common cancers such as prostate and breast cancer, perhaps because its seen as a 'self-inflicted' cancer, but almost 20% of lung cancer patients have never smoked and 100 people die from the disease every day in the UK alone, so there is an urgent need for more research in this area. Child cancer hits almost 10,000 children in the UK

01:56
http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ What are the implications of these latest figures? Recent figures have revealed that almost 10,000 children in the UK have cancer. In today's video, we look at the importance of follow up care for children who survive cancer. Research conducted by Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Cancer Intelligence Network have shown there are almost 10,000 children aged 0-14 currently living with cancer in the UK, with almost half being diagnosed at least 5 years ago. It has been suggested that many children who survive cancer have a higher risk of health problems such as heart and lung conditions as well as problems with growth and development. Suggestions are made that experts believe children often do not receive timely and appropriate follow-up care and that there needs to be a greater understanding of the risks faced by those treated as children. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said: The most commonly diagnosed cancer in children is leukaemia, which accounts for almost a third of new cases a year. It is encouraging to see that almost half of all under 14s diagnosed with cancer are still living five-years on, but a concern that many children will end up with an increased risk of other health conditions, including an increased risk of developing secondary cancers. It is important that Adult specialists and GPs need to know how to manage the side-effects and lifestyle changes that can affect those treated for cancer as children. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Please leave your interesting views and questions in the comments section below. Are Nanoparticles Alive? Dr Amanda Barnard

49:06
About the talk In the world of science fiction, nanotechnology is often shown as swarms of micro-machines that act without the need for human supervision. Much like their biological counterparts, these imagined devices even sometimes possess their own intelligence. The imagination of science fiction writers has taken this high tech fantasy beyond the reality. But scientists have imagination too, and increasingly they are taking nanomaterials to remarkable places with properties that sound stranger than fiction. In this talk, Dr Amanda Barnard will take us through the latest advances in nanotechnology and answer the fantastic question: 'Are nanoparticles alive?' About the speaker Dr. Amanda Barnard is an Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Science leader, and head of the Virtual Nanoscience Laboratory at CSIRO. She received her PhD (Physics) in 2003, followed by a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory (USA), and the prestigious senior research position as Violette & Samuel Glasstone Fellow at the University of Oxford (UK) with an Extraordinary Research Fellowship at The Queen's College. She joined CSIRO as an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow in 2009, and since then has won the 2009 Young Scientist Prize in Computational Physics from IUPAP, the 2009 Mercedes Benz Environmental Research Award, the 2009 Malcolm McIntosh Award from the Prime Minister of Australia for the Physical Scientist of the Year, the 2010 Frederick White Prize from the Australian Academy of Science, the 2010 Eureka Prize for Scientific Research, and the 2014 ACS Nano Lectureship for Asia-Pacific.
Trans veteran finds support, strength and a new path

She found some purpose in joining the Wisconsin Army National Guard and returning to UWM. Eventually, she came out as trans and was discharged from the military under “don’t ask, don’t tell.” She felt alone and isolated, but UWM’s LGBT Resource Center provided crucial support. Trump Goes Rogue Calls Out Islamists in Early Morning Tweetstor

04:26
Trump Breaking News Network - Trump Goes Rogue, Calls Out Islamists in Early-Morning Tweetstorm. BY MARTIN WALSH. Refusing to cower to political correctness, President Donald Trump went rogue Wednesday, taking dead aim at radical Islamic terrorists and the violence they sow. Trump retweeted three separate videos from Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of the right-wing U.K. party Britain First, that reportedly show Muslims attacking innocent people. At least one of the videos has been questioned about its authenticity, and whether the attacker portrayed really was Muslim, but White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday said the president’s intent was to spread the message of danger from abroad. The retweets, she said, did that. “Whether it’s a real video, the threat is real,” Sanders said, according to the Washington Examiner. “(Trump’s) goal is to promote strong border security and strong national security.” In the first video — the one questioned by critics — Fransen said a Muslim migrant was depicted attacking a Dutch boy who uses a crutch. TRENDING: CNN Boycotts WH Christmas Party, But Sarah’s Priceless Comeback Is the Real Story It’s a disturbing scene. The attacker approached the victim in a clearly threatening way, then stood briefly with his arm around him. The individual recording the attack can be heard saying, “let’s go.” Around the 15-second mark, the attacker takes a step back, and then leaps forward to kick the victim in the leg. The attacker then punches and kicks the victim several times, while the man recording the video can be heard laughing. In the second video from Fransen, an apparently Muslim man can be seen destroying a statue of the Virgin Mary. After making a statement in Arabic, the man slams the statue to the ground, shattering it. Mary, of course, was the mother of Jesus and serves as a symbol of strength and purity for countless Christians. RELATED: Big White House Win for Everyday People, One of Worst Obama Agencies Corralled Fransen claimed the third clip showed an Islamist mob assaulting several people after they were pushed from a ledge on a rooftop. In the video, a man can be seen with a flag that appears to be the banner used by the Islamic State terrorist group. Around the one-minute mark in the video, other men can be seen tossing several people off a ledge down to the rooftop, where a group of men appears to be attacking them when they land. According to Fransen, the victims included a teenage boy who was beaten to death. The savagery of the scene is appalling. Warning: This video contains graphic footage that may be uncomfortable: As Sanders explained to the White House press corps, Trump’s decision to retweet these three videos reportedly showing Islamist violence was meant to show the American people how crucial border security is — and how dangerous the threat of radical Islam really is. By informing his millions of followers of these heinous attacks, Trump is definitely taking a stand on the issue, and trying to show Americans why the country needs extreme vetting, a border wall, and a travel ban on individuals trying to get into the U.S. from terrorist-ridden nations. No country can afford to normalize these violent attacks from radical jihadists. Rather than cower to radical Islam like Barack Obama, Trump is putting the terrorism issue front and center. Please like and share this story if you agree with President Trump that we must do everything we can to keep Americans safe from this kind of violence! ----------------------------------------------------------- MAKE DONATIONS HERE http://trumpbreakingnewsnetwork.net/donation ----------------------------------------------------------- Source: https://conservativetribune.com/trump-rogue-calls-out-islamists/ Please subscribe and share on your social media. UK is the best place in the world to die, according to end of life care index

02:01
Integration of palliative care into NHS and strong hospice movement among reasons for UK ranking first in study of 80 countries The integration of palliative care into the NHS, a strong hospice movement largely funded by the charitable sector, specialised staff and deep community engagement are among the reasons cited by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The upper echelons of the index are dominated by wealthy European, Asia-Pacific and north American countries. Australia is second, New Zealand third and Ireland and Belgium complete the top five. Annie Pannelay, of EIU healthcare, said: “A very strong marker in our index is the availability of specialised palliative care workers and this is where the UK scores particularly well. The UK has a long history of providing treatment in palliative care. The other super strong marker is the way that the countries do have a plan for palliative care. That means they are on the dynamic of measuring progress and improving.” The US is ninth in the index. Taiwan is the highest Asian country, placing sixth, while India and China rank 67th and 71st respectively. Their performances were described as worrying in light of their huge populations, with China of particular concern given that “the impact of the one-child policy, often leaving individuals caring for two parents and four grandparents, will lead to even more demand for outside resources to provide support”. Among the countries that fare well despite being less wealthy and having less well developed healthcare systems are Mongolia and Panama, 28th and 31st on the index respectively. Mongolia’s performance was attributed to an individual doctor who has driven an increase in palliative care. Despite the UK’s top ranking, the study’s authors say it is “still not providing adequate services for every citizen”. They highlight an investigation by the parliamentary and health service ombudsman into complaints about end-of-life care, published in May, which raised issues including poor symptom control, poor communication and planning, failures to respond to the needs of the dying, inadequate out-of-hours services and delays in diagnosis and referrals for treatment. Pannelay said: “There are some concerns but there is a plan to improve and the single fact that there is a parliamentary report on that and it’s available publicly means a lot – that means the UK is working on it.” The UK received the top score in the indicator measuring financial burden to patients, indicating that 80% to 100% of end-of-life care services are paid for by sources other than the patient, much of it from charitable funding. The authors praise the Dying Matters Coalition set up by the National Council for Palliative Care charity in the UK to encourage people to talk more openly about death and make plans for the end of life. The EIU says the UK’s resources, like those of other countries, will be stretched in future by an an ageing population and non-communicable diseases including cancer, dementia and diabetes. The authors say recent third-party research demonstrates a significant link in the use of palliative care and treatment cost savings. Despite evidence of the economic benefits, they point out that only about 0.2% of the funds awarded for cancer research in the UK in 2010 went to research into palliative care, while in the US it was 1% of the National Cancer Institute’s appropriation. The Quality of Death Index, commissioned by the Lien Foundation, a Singaporean philanthropic organisation, is based on qualitative and quantitative indicators and took in interviews with more than 120 palliative care experts from around the world. The UK came top in the only previous index, produced in 2010, although that was limited to 40 countries and the criteria has since been refined.

AI detects bowel cancer | Japan

01:45
Japanese researchers say they have developed artificial intelligence technology that helps doctors diagnose bowel cancer during an endoscopic examination. Researchers at the National Cancer Center and electronics maker NEC built the AI. It is expected to help doctors spot cancer cells faster and with higher accuracy, reducing failures to detect disease. The researchers say the AI analyzes images to identify cancer or polyps that could grow into cancer. Doctors are notified with a chime when the AI detects an abnormality during an endoscopic procedure. Its location is also indicated on the image the doctors see. The researchers say the AI is powered by "deep learning" and that it is able to detect cancer with an accuracy rate of 98 percent. In Japan, about 50,000 people died from bowel cancer in 2014, making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths. The National Cancer Center says studies overseas show that bowel endoscopies fail to diagnose cancer 24 percent of the time. The institute says it hopes to conduct clinical tests in about 2 years, with the aim of putting the system into practical use soon. If that isn’t enough to let you know that there are secrets going on here, just wait! One incident that happened in 1968 led to the of 6000 sheep. No one really knew for sure what had happened, but it was thought this facility had something to do with it. As far as the percent of the US population, this is equivalent to over 60,000 dogs. It was denied for 30 years that the facility was involved in any way, but in 1998, it was revealed that the ground released a chemical nerve agent loose that the 6000 sheep. Another incident happened in 2011 when a soldier at the base went missing. Earlier that year, Dugway Proving Ground was placed on lockdown. They said that the employees were not allowed to leave, and those coming to work were not allowed in. It was said that there were no threats or injuries, but no explanation was given. There were about 1,300 people in lock down at the time. It was later stated that a vial containing VX nerve agent had gone missing…temporarily. Later that year, the soldier left to go to work, and called a friend saying he had run out of gas, and had lost his shoes. A rescue crew later found the car he’d been driving…which was mysteriously borrowed. Items of clothing, such as his hat and shoes were found as well. But the man…never was. It has also been reported that numerous UFOs have been sighted, and even stored in the area. But, chances are, unless something disastrous happens, we’ll never find out any of Dugway’s secrets. #8 Raven Rock, Site R Raven Rock Mountain Complex is a military installation bunker in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania. It has been described as an “underground Pentagon.” Many note cell phones and GPS devices do not work near Site R, which means there is likely a blocking device used to prevent hacking or communications. To take the secrecy to the next level, on May 25, 2007, a new policy declared “it is unlawful for any person entering in or on the property … to make any photograph, sketch, picture, drawing, map or graphical representation of the Raven Rock Mountain Complex without first obtaining the necessary permission.” This would include Google Maps. The site was, however, depicted in the video game “Fallout 3” as a base of operations for what was once the U.S. Government. It is known for being powered by a reactor and being one of the few places with fresh water. In the game, of course. #7 The Cheyenne Mountain Complex The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a military base and in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Built during the 1950’s as a defense against long-range Soviet, it is located inside the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. At one time, the complex was the base for the United States Space Command and NORAD. This is where they monitored the aircraft in space, as well as missiles and other space systems. In 2008, both the United States Space Command and NORAD were moved to a new location. Many thought Cheyenne Mountain was closed after that but the Cheyenne Mountain Complex is still NORAD and USNORTHCOM’s Alternate command center. There are over a dozen government and Department of Defense agencies inside that can’t be named publicly. The center is now also used as a place to train flight crews. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex is built 2000ft under granite, and is made up of 15 three-story buildings. A thousand springs around the buildings prevent them from budging even one-inch. There are 5 lakes inside the mountain that can be used for drinking water or for firefighting, and as a backup heating and cooling system. The complex used to be open to tours, but since 9/11, all tours to the public have ceased. #6 Pine Gap Pine Gap is a satellite ground station in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. But it is operated by both Australia and the United States. It is officially known as the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap. It is run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The station controls and monitors United States spy satellites as they pass over the one third of the globe. Why are you fascinated by fusion? | Stephen Cowley

01:18
Stephen Cowley of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority talks about the importance of fusion. Fusion currently only occurs in the centers of stars. But Steve Cowley thinks we may be able to recreate it here on Earth. As director of the Culham Center for Fusion Energy, he's collaborating with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and researchers on the France-based ITER fusion device on projects that may lead to cheap, nearly limitless carbon-free energy through fusion. Steve knows what he's talking about: He's a Professor at Imperial College in the United Kingdom, and led the Plasma Physics Group there. He's Chief Executive Officer of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. And he's a member of the Prime Minister's Council of Science and Technology.

The Ugly Truth of Islam - Shabbat Night Live - 5/11/18

01:28:30
Michael Rood welcomes special speaker Kamal Saleem whose personal story of the making and unmaking of an Islamic terrorist will enlighten, inspire and spark a healthy fear in the hearts of all who hear it. Islam without the supreme law of Sharia can’t do anything. Sharia law dictates every single element of the life of Muslims. We know that Islam is slavery because when they take on Sharia they have to live by a code that is given to them by Mohammad. Most Christians in this country today don't know much about the dangers of Islam and Sharia law. 40% of Muslims worldwide and 62% of Muslims living in the U.S. support Sharia law. Jihad is the cornerstone of Islam. 164 verses of the Koran prescribes Jihad. One third of Islam commands the carrying out of Holy war. So what can we do? God will go before us and lead us. When we allow the "super " of God into our nature, and allow our nature to move in the "super", we, the church, then become and move in the "supernatural". You are not to just hear the truth and do nothing. You are to take that truth, and with God in you, accomplish great things in the earth. Will you stand up and walk in the truth? Watch this incredible episode and learn the plan against believers in Yeshua! RI Seminar: Michael Tarr : I would kill for a pigeon (CMU’s new BrainHub)

01:07:54
Michael Tarr Professor and Head, Psychology, Carnegie Mellon February 13, 2015 Abstract The study of biological intelligence can be summed up by this quip from Terry Pratchett: "Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.” Put a bit more scientifically, how is it that biological systems can be so imprecise, so ad hoc, and so inefficient, yet accomplish (seemingly) simple tasks that still elude state-of-the-art artificial systems? In this context, I will introduce some of the themes central to CMU’s new BrainHub by discussing: (1) The complexity and challenges of studying the mind and brain; (2) How the study of the mind and brain may benefit from considering contemporary artificial systems; (3) Why studying the mind and brain might be interesting (and possibly useful) to computer scientists. Speaker Biography Michael J. Tarr is the Head of the Department of Psychology in Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Chair of Carnegie Mellon's BrainHub Steering Committee. He studies the neural, cognitive and computational mechanisms underlying visual perception and cognition. He is particularly interested in object and face recognition, how we become visual experts for non-face object domains, and how visual perception interacts with our other senses, with cognition, and with social and affective processing. Much of his work is predicated on the idea that models of artificial and biological vision have something (meaningful) in common and that both disciplines will benefit from greater interaction. From 2009-2013, he was the co-director of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (CNBC), at Carnegie Mellon. Before joining the CMU faculty in 2009, he spent 14 years on the faculty of Brown University and 6 years on the faculty of Yale University. He received his PhD from M.I.T. in 1989 and his BA from Cornell University in 1984. The National Academy of Sciences recognized Tarr with the Troland Award in 2003, given annually to honor unusual achievement and further empirical research in psychology. The American Psychological Association recognized him with the APA Early Career Award 1997. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Experimental Psychologists.

Dogs Sniffing For Prostate Cancer

01:33
Fun fact: Dogs can smell prostate cancer! A 2014 study showed that trained canines can detect prostate cancer with greater than 97 percent accuracy. Not so fun fact: Every year thousands of men undergo rather uncomfortable biopsies following positive prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests only to discover they do not have prostate cancer after all. You see where we're going with this? A team of scientists from the Integrated Nanosystems Development Institute of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center caught on, as well. "If dogs can smell prostate cancer, we should be able to, too," says Amanda Siegel, PhD. She presented the research of the group at the 253rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society. "The idea for this project started with a study published in 2014 showing that trained canines could detect prostate cancer with greater than 97 percent accuracy," says Mangilal Agarwal, PhD, the project's principal investigator. First, the scientists needed to find out which molecules wafting from urine were the prostate cancer indicators that the dogs had already scoped out. They collected urine samples from 100 men undergoing prostate biopsies. Then, they used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify the organic compounds floating in the "headspace" above the urine samples – that is, they they took apart the smell, piece by piece. With this method, the researchers pinpointed a small set of molecules that showed up in 90 percent of the samples from patients with prostate cancer but not in samples from those who did not have the disease. If all goes well, the scientists figure they can start rolling out their olfactory prostate test to patients and doctors within the next few years. Mining routine radiation oncology clinical datasets - David Thwaites

17:52
There is a growing evidence gap in cancer treatment decisions, particularly in radiation oncology due to rapidly evolving technologies and treatments and to difficulties of randomised clinical trials (RCT) and their linkage to the wider patient population. However, the large sets of clinical and imaging data routinely collected on cancer patients could provide additional evidence to help support optimised clinical decisions, complementing the limited RCT information. Innovations Conference The Innovations in Cancer Treatment and Care Conference is a free, annual event hosted by the Cancer Institute NSW. The conference provides health professionals with an opportunity to hear, collaborate and share the latest innovations in quality cancer care. This year's event was held at the Novotel Sydney Olympic Park and was attended by over 300 delegates working to lessen the impact of cancer in NSW. http://www.cancerinstitute.org.au/events/i/innovations-in-cancer-treatment-and-care-2014
