After having a baby there are lots of different options for contraception. Just remember that don't depend on breastfeeding alone as a form of contraception because you may be coming to the hospital nine months later if you think that's the case. Your period can return 7-14 weeks after having a baby so it's always a good idea to have some form of contraception on board the first time you have intercourse after having a baby. As far as what options are available, there are lots and the best thing to do would be to talk to your doctor who can discuss your health history, your pregnancy history, and all the different options that are available because some are appropriate -- there are some forms of birth control that aren't appropriate for certain people based on their health history and other things that may have happened to them in the past. I'll go through a couple of options with you and you can bring them up with your doctor based on what I've discussed and what sounds like it would be good for you. There is the mini-pill. It is just oral contraception that you take every day and it's 95%-99% reliable if taken correctly. However if you miss a pill you can get pregnant and it can increase your chances of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke especially for smokers and people who are over the age of 35. Again, this would be appropriate for some people and not for others. There is the diaphragm. It's a small rubber cup that is actually inserted up inside the vagina with spermicide on it. It's only about 80%-94% effective if it's used correctly. It can be inserted six hours before intercourse and stay in for 24 hours. Some women love it but others hate it because it can be a little bit uncomfortable and difficult to place. There is also an IUD which stands for intrauterine device and this has to be placed by the doctor, it can be done at your six week check-up if you'd like. It goes up inside the uterus and helps prevent you from getting pregnant. It's actually 97%-99% effective. A lot of women like it because you just get it placed and you don't ever have to think about it again until it expires. The copper kinds are good for up to 10 years and there are plastic kinds that release hormones that are good for up to five years. There are some cons. Your uterus can be perforated when the doctor places it. It can increase the risk for pelvatory inflammatory disease for some women. It can cause irregular cramping, bleeding, and spotting. Again it would be the best thing for you to talk to your doctor and they can discuss different options with you and decide what would be best for you. Learn how to calculate safe period to avoid pregnancy using a free, simple, natural and effective method. HOW TO CALCULATE SAFE PERIOD TO AVOID PREGNANCY: FREE, SIMPLE, AND EFFECTIVE METHOD! Calculating your safe period and using it in preventing unwanted pregnancy is free. It has no side effects; it is always available and quite effective if properly calculated and applied. But many people find this very confusing and difficult to calculate. And so, today, we will be looking at a simple method of calculating one's safe period and applying it in preventing pregnancy. 1) Okay, the first thing to note is that: you should start counting from the date you started bleeding (not the day you finished the bleeding). For example if you started bleeding on the 4th, you start counting from the 4th (not the day you finished but the day you started). The 4th will be day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and so on the day you started bleeding will be your day 1. 2) The second thing to note is: when it comes to calculating your safe period you must avoid Day-14 and days around Day-14: These days are the "dangerous days". So if you started bleeding on the 4th, that would be your day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14...then the 14th  day  -- and days around Day-14 should be avoided: these are the dangerous days because, these are the days the egg is likely to be released and the probability of getting pregnant is very high! 3) The third thing to note here is that: every other day apart from this danger period constitutes your safe period; so all these days aside Day-14 (and days around it) constitutes your safe period. As you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases and away from Day-14, the likelihood decreases. So, the day you started bleeding is part of your safe period but as you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases. Days around day 14...avoid, but other days are safe and down to your next period next month are safe. The danger period are the days to avoid sexual intercourse which are the days around 14th day. I will repeat it one more time: The first thing is start counting from the first day you started bleeding that would be Day 1. The next thing is avoid Day 14 and days around day 14. I hope that helps but before we leave, 2 very important points to note: 1) First this method is best for ladies with a fairly regular menstrual circle where the difference in months is just few days. You might see your period 17th this month and 18th or 19th next month or 15th or 16th next month. The difference is just few days plus or minus. We can say you have a fairly regular menstrual circle then you can apply this method of contraception. 2) The second point is this method is not advisable for ladies with very short menstrual circle say for ladies that see their menses every 3 weeks and it is also not advisable for ladies with very long menstrual circle say for ladies that see their period once in every 2 months. Today we're going to be talking about things that women might be interested in you know as a woman it's hard to navigate the health care system needs these days, especially with everything always changing so even routine things even if you don't have a major health issue even routine things can be difficult so I'm hoping that these slides and this presentation will help you as a woman to get some hacks and tips and ideas about how to navigate your healthcare issues. Women very interestingly are more likely to be underinsured or uninsured but spend more money on health care and they see what primary care doctors more often we also take more medications so it's really important that we understand healthcare and vocalize our needs and advocate for ourselves during our healthcare visit. health care policy in many countries tends to focus on women's issues which is contraception pregnancy, breast and ovarian cancer and menopause today we will be discussing contraceptive hacks so in the US, the ACA (Affordable Care Act) has mandated certain changes in policy so we now have no cost birth control, women's well visits, breast feeding stations and no cost mammograms for women over 40 in Europe some countries have free birth control some have no financial help at all, and others have a subsidy that pays a little bit about portion of the cost in Canada and Australia birth control is available at a lower cost so they do have subsidies there One thing you need to know about birth control, and this should be a discussion that you have in more depth with your physician is how well it works so in the graph that I am showing it's the failure rate, that is typical user rates there are some differences in theoretical efficacy and what actually this is what really happens out in the field if a woman is not using birth control at all and she is sexually active Eight out of ten women will become pregnant within one year if you look at the rates for the pill and the pill is one of the most widely used contraceptions Throughout the world with one major difference, which I will show you in a minute the pill (failure rate) is nine percent, that doesn't sound bad but when you start thinking about it, that's one in ten women on the pill per year, gets pregnant, if you're using the pill over 20-year span, so you go on it very young, in your 20's and then you use it through your 40's What's really interesting is that the failure rate for the pill declines over time and people actually get better at using contraception the more they use it. there are other methods that are more reliable and the IUDs and implants are very reliable but there are also other ways that you can make the pill more reliable. You can use condoms in combination with the pill and that will or course, increase the efficacy or lower the Here's the chart I was just eluding to. It's that different regions like different methods of contraception and something you'll notices as kind of a take-away point is that Asia is one of the highest for sterilization and for IUDs and implants they are not as "in love " with the pill as Europe and America and some of the other countries you should not just accept the pill as a default you definitely need to speak with your physician about different options so there's so many options out there to choose from now there's no reason not to have that conversation and find out what is right for you where's the IUD the hormones inside of the IUDs as a opposed to the copper ones. They can actually used in women who have heavy periods and need some control of that, and are suffering from anemia and, you know, need some control. Implants are also very effective but they do have weight gain as a side effect. So some people she absolutely stay away from them but they can be easily reversed on and the birth control ring is another one that is similar but it has less hormone exposure the birth control ring is not very widely accepted in the US it's much more accepted in Europe so uh condoms again, they're low-cost or free they can be used in combination with many of these things and they add the sexually transmitted disease protection so that's always a good option

Outreach Clinics Expand Access to Family Planning in Malawi

The USAID-funded, MSH-led ONSE Health Activity expands access to voluntary family planning through mobile outreach clinics in Malawi. Offering both group education and individual counseling, outreach teams inform women and their partners on all available methods of family planning, empowering them to choose the most appropriate method for their own needs. In nine months, ONSE’s nine mobile outreach teams have distributed long-acting and short-term contraceptives to almost 52,000 clients.
